A makeshift field on First Avenue, where Lab Corp is now, had the right fielder playing in the street and the centerfielder playing against the railroad tracks. June 1952 marked the end of playing ball on makeshift fields as Raritan now had an official youth baseball league that would be played

Kangaroo Kids Teacher Honored - Jackie Russano

Women from Bradley Gardens Reformed Church assemble hygiene kits and school kits for their annual mission outreach project. Back row: Marie Krantz, Carol Kowal, Judy Jordan. Front row: Florence Follo and Judy Kersting. Submitted photo The folks at Bradley Garden Reformed Church, 124 Old York Road, have been collecting items to make school and hygiene kits for distribution during times of disaster or need. This has been an annual project for many years. The kits are delivered to the Church World Service warehouse in New Windsor, Md. This warehouse stores emergency items such as flood cleanup kits, baby kits for newborns, school kits, along with hygiene kits and blankets. The American Medical Association, Catholic Relief, Methodists Missions along with Church World Service (CWS), fill and distribute the supplies as needed. Church World Service has warehouses in many countries ready to go into action. Many of their requests are filled from this giant warehouse. Churches all over the United States participate in filling this warehouse. The Bradley Gardens Church has a Blanket Fund collection every year to gather materials to complete the hygiene and school kits. Others prepare or pay for those much needed Clean-up Kits for flood damage victims. These items are so appreciated and they go wherever there is a disaster in the United States and around the world. The warehouse was depleted of Clean-up kits with Hurricane Katrina in 2005. These hands-on projects are an effective way to help. Many churches in Somerset County participate in this work. If you would like to contribute items to the Bradley Gardens Church on-going projects, please call Rita Jordan at 908-725-3315.

The first Dawn Patrol clubhouse was located on Route 22 in Bridgewater. Riders have an opportunity to mingle, swap stories and compare their bikes. This year the registration will be at the Bradley Gardens Fire House, 24 Old York Road, Bridgewater, on May 27th from 9 a.m. until noon. More information can be found on the D.P.M.C. website at www.dawnpatrolmc.com. The first Dawn Patrol clubhouse was located on Route 22 in Bridgewater. rides or trips. Members go on several club trips each year. Some are day trips, and some include one or more overnight stays, to places such as Lake George, NY; Carlisle, Pa; and various other locations in the tristate area. The Club was honored at a Bridgewater town council meeting in May 1987. The late Councilman, Robert Hanlon, read a proclamation commemorating the 50th Anniversary and the club’s contributions to

the community. His son, Robert, is a member today, as well as being an active member of the community in the Rescue Squad and Fire Department. D.P.M.C. has been participating in and leading the Bridgewater Memorial Day Parade for over 35 years, presenting a wreath at the memorial. It has also participated in the St. Patrick’s Parade, Somerville, the John Basilone Parade, Raritan, and assisted with the Kelsey Ride, since its inception. The club supports the Rescue Squad, Fire Dept. and the Youth Shelter in Bradley Gardens through donations. It has also raised donations for other charities. The Clubhouse has been flooded a number of times, especially this past year. Hurricane Irene caused devastating flooding that swelled the Raritan River to just below the ceiling. The members have been working hard to repair the damage that was done and fix the club grounds better than before. Other organizations have assisted in various ways and D.P.M.C. members are grateful for their help in the flood recovery. Dining Delights - On March 23, a group of Bridgewater Seniors en-

joyed a delicious luncheon prepared by the Students of the Culinary Institute at Vo Tech High School. The exotic meal consisted of salad with crispy and refreshing jicama, avocado, radish, and orange in an olive oil and lime juice dressing, followed by a choice of roasted vegetable kabobs with basil pesto sauce over mushroom barley pilaf; Cuban mojo chicken with pineapple vinaigrette; or a pistachio crusted tilapia over coconut rice topped with Miami mango salsa. For dessert they enjoyed a choice of peanut butter chocolate chip cheesecake or vegan chocolate chip and spice cookies with lemon sorbet. The servers did an outstanding job of taking orders and there was high praise for each of them. Hello to all you wonderful BReeze readers. Let’s hop into spring with a light and spicy chicken dish. It’s that time when we are balancing work, school, concerts, sports, and home. I had one of those days recently and came up with this one. Simple, zesty, and quick! And the best part was everybody ate it! 4-5 Boneless Chicken Breasts cut into strips or cubed 3 Tbs Vegetable Oil (or Canola, sunflower, etc. just not olive oil because you don’t want that to be the taste) 1 Tbs Minced Garlic 1/3 Cup All Purpose Flour (in a storage bag seasoned with 1/2 tsp garlic powder and 1/2 tsp black pepper) 1 package General Tsao Seasoning Sauce (found in the aisle with soy sauce at Shop Rite)

1 Package frozen stir-fry veggies 1 Package frozen broccoli 1/3 Cup water Toss chicken into floured storage bag to coat with seasoned flour mixture. In a large skillet or wok, heat oil and sauté garlic till golden, add chicken and toss together over medium high heat until chicken is no longer pink. Add water and mix together. When blended, add General Tsao seasoning and continue to mix thoroughly. Add veggies, cover and continue to cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes. When veggies are heated through, mix thoroughly again, and yum yum it’s ready to go. I served over rice, but plain, over mashed potatoes, or noodles would probably work too. Seasoning packet adds a little bite to the meal but it’s not too spicy. Enjoy! Donna G.

International Recognition Bestowed Upon John F. Kennedy School in Raritan

Japanese and American delegates along with students from John F. Kennedy School in Raritan celebrate the Centennial Anniversary of the Gift of Cherry Blossom Trees to America. The year 2012 marks the centennial anniversary of the gift of cherry blossom trees from Japan to the United States. In 1912, three thousand cherry blossom trees were presented to the United States by the Mayor of Tokyo Yukio Ozaki, as a token of friendship when he learned that First Lady Helen Taft loved cherry blossoms and wanted to improve the look of Potomac Park in the District of Columbia with cherry blossom trees. In a tree planting ceremony on April 10th, Raritan Borough and the Organization for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement (OISCA) International-USA celebrated the centennial anniversary of the gift of the cherry blossom. In celebration of

the gift of trees, OISCA International-USA proudly launched their first American based “Children’s Forest Program in Raritan Borough. The Children’s Forest Program (CFP) encourages children to plant saplings on school yards or adjacent lands, take care of them and through this experience increase awareness of the importance of environmental protection. The celebration, organized by Raritan Council President Stefanie Gara, was attended by state and local government officials, Japanese dignitaries, students, faculty and local residents. OISCA Japan Delegation Leader, Mr. Masayaki Sugiura, explained the role of OISCA CFP’s. “Started

in 1991, OISCA has been implementing CFP’s in over 30 countries and territories, planting trees at over 4,000 schools and planting over 6,500,000 trees around the world. OISCA aims to educate school children to the importance of environmental conservation and protection through involving them in the actual tree planting in the school vicinity and organizing workshops tackling the roles that they need to perform to protect the environment from further destruction. The event, spearheaded by Angela Marie Z. Tayco, an alumnae of JFK School and the current communications director for OISCA International USA Chapter, said, “I would like to give back to this

school with these cherry trees which will grow into beautiful flowering cherry trees with love and care from the children. John F. Kennedy principal Joe Walsh addressed the crowd, “We’re proud to be a part of the centennial celebration commemorating the gift of the Japanese cherry blossom trees. We gratefully accept these cherry blossom trees which will stand as living and lasting symbols of peace, friendship and community. In keeping with the spirit of peace, friendship and community, Mr. Walsh presented OISCA Japan Delegation Leader Mr. Sugiura with a special gift of a collection of Haiku poems written by 4th grade students in honor of the donation of the

cherry blossom trees. Among the gifts extended by the Japanese delegation to JFK School, were wooden horse figurines, a symbol of protection, from Fukushima and key chains as a symbol of hope for the future made by a 92-year-old Japanese woman who survived the devastating tsunami last spring. Congressman Leonard Lance was on hand at the event and congratulated the children on participating in the planting, “I hope that as you grow-up, you will return to this school perhaps with your Japanese peers and see how long and tall your trees have grown. And I hope that your children 25 or 30 years from now will continue your example of planting trees.

Bradley Gardens School Students Talk About the Kindness of Friends Students from Mrs. Nardella’s 1st grade class, Mrs. Clancy’s 1st grade class, and Mrs. Newell’s 3rd grade class at Bradley Gardens School in Bridgewater recently answered the question, “What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you?” Their answers appear below:

Allison – 1st Grade

This year on the playground I got hurt at recess and my friend helped me. She was very brave and helpful. Her name is Katarina. I was very happy to have her as a friend. Next time I will do something nice for her.

Ayank – 1st Grade

When I was at school, I was reading a book and my book box fell on the floor. Everything fell out but my friend Rohan came and helped me clean it up.

Emily – 3rd Grade

The nicest thing my friend ever did for me was when my birthday was on the same day as the dance recital. My BFF, Stacey, told all of my dance mates it was my birthday. So after the dance recital, they had a birthday party for me. That’s why we are still BFF’s.

Miranda – 1st Grade

One time I was lonely. So my friend Caitlin played with me because I was lonely. It was very nice of her to do that. I wish I can do something nice for her. One time I did do something like that. One time.

Nathan – 3rd Grade

The nicest thing my friend ever did for me was on my birthday. Melissa Genova got me a big blue teddy. She knows I like teddy’s because I have my very own teddy collection. I named the teddy Blueberry because he was the color of a blueberry.

Ava – 1st Grade

The nicest thing a friend has ever done for me was when my brother Nick came with me to the doctor and held my hand because I was scared.

Madeline – 3rd Grade

My first day of coming back to school from being in the hospital, my best friend Teresa offered to push me in my wheelchair. She also carried my stuff while I had crutches. That is the nicest thing a friend could do. That’s what makes her my best friend.

Continued from page 1 on a real baseball field with coaches and umpires. When the town first decided to start a baseball program, they set out to link up with a new youth baseball organization that was simply called “Little League.” Recreation director Steve Del Rocco and Ed Minetti drove to the Little League headquarters in Williamsport, PA, to learn the standards and regulations of the league. Little League began with one league in 1939 and spread countrywide by 1949. Every town wanted to be a part of it. Locally, Somerville, Bridgewater, and Manville began their own Little League programs in the early fifties. The original site for the new field was a large block of land on Sherman Avenue that had been donated to the town by the Frelinghuysen family in the 1940s. The donated land was not initially suited for baseball. However, a few recent high school graduates, saw that the lot was large enough to avoid the imperfections (and dangers) of the other fields. These enterprising young men used shovels, picks, and axes and turned the western part of the lot into a baseball field. Today, this field is known as Steve Del Rocco field. In 1952, when town officials decided to make an official “Little League” field, they chose to create it next to the existing adult field as this area had become established as a ball park site. Local businesses and individuals donated their time and material to get the Little League program off the ground. Cinder blocks necessary to build the first dug outs were donated by local builder Henry Condo. Labor to turn the cinder blocks into dugouts was donated by Nick Albanese Sr., whose son was to play in the first league. According to Steve Del Rocco, when they needed bats, balls, and catcher’s equipment, a donation from a local business or person could always be found. As a result of the local support, there was no charge to play in the early years of the Raritan Little League. On opening day in 1952 many residents came out to the inaugural opening game. Ceremonies were held before the game at the field. Father Joe Miller of St. Bernard’s Church (then on Somerset St. in

Recreation Director Steve Del Rocco announced that some local businesses were offering rewards to the players. Two local barbers were offering free haircuts to any home run hitters. For doubles and triples a player would receive a free pass to the movies. As the season progressed, the prizes changed to free ice cream for a home run more fun than a haircut - and Delucia’s chipped in a free pizza, a value of 60 cents then, for a triple. At 2:00 p.m. the first Raritan Little League game began with the Red Sox playing the Dodgers. In the first inning of that first game, Tony Orlando (grandson of tavern owner of the same name) delighted the crowd when he hit a home run over the left

Walter Dembiec was the winning pitcher for the Dodgers – he also hit two doubles. As the first season developed, the Dodgers established themselves as the premiere team in the league. They won their first 13 games and eventually ended with a 16-2 record. The other three teams each finished several games below .500. The Dodgers were led by league MVP Tony Orlando who pitched and played shortstop. Catcher Al Martin was also a standout. Bob Lauyer was an excellent all-around player who pitched and played centerfield. Another young player, Walter Dembiec played short stop and also pitched. Walter, two years later in 1954, would be the league MVP.

In 1954, Raritan Little League teams received official uniforms.

In 2012, the Raritan Yankees duplicate the pose of the 1954 team. At the end of the 1952 season, a Little League baseball tournament was held between the towns of Raritan, Somerville, Bridgewater, and Manville. Each town put forth their All-Star team to play in a round robin where each team played each other twice. The players recall how competitive this tournament was between the best from each town. One of the games was a very special treat to the players as it was played under

Somerset Valley Orchestra to Perform Spring Concert on May 20th Come hear the Somerset Valley Orchestra perform their annual spring concert at the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School Auditorium on Sunday, May 20th at 2 p.m. The theme of this performance is “Symphonic Icons” and will include such pieces as “John Henry” by Aaron Copland, Haydn’s Symphony #88, Johann Strauss’s “Radetsky March” and “In the Steppes of Central Asia” by Alexander Borodin. The most interesting departure from the norm in this concert is a rare performance of Igor Stravinski’s “The Soldiers Tale” written in 1918. This piece depicts the story of a soldier returning home from WW1. During his travels, the soldier trades his fiddle to the devil in exchange for a book that tells the future of the economy. Several soloists will be featured, including Darek Mankowski on violin, Catherine Heiba on clarinet, Jason Ginsberg on trombone, and Dan Mussachio on bassoon. According to conductor Larry Markiewicz, “The Somerset Valley Orchestra is improving by leaps and bounds each month. The depth of incoming talent combined with a solid work ethic has allowed the group to thrive.” For more info, visit www.somersetvalleyorchestra.com.

If you have ever walked down the halls of Bridgewater Raritan High school between classes then you, my poor fellow, know the trials and tribulations that come inherent in such a large school. The hallways in BRHS are something every freshman student dreads, and every senior upperclassman has gotten sick of over the years. To survive one must be quick, cunning, and unafraid. To make things simple, I think of the school in different sectors. There’s the back pathway that goes past the 200 building all the way up from the small cafeteria; the main walkway which isn’t very different from a two-lane highway; and the outside path that passes in front of the main office building where the buses park. For some people, mainly those who have never walked around the B-R campus, these buildings and places don’t mean a thing. For those who walk these halls ev-

ery day, however, there are certain survival tips needed to prevent eminent squishage. On the main walkway, especially on a rainy day, a student must be prepared to do what I call The Driver’s Test. On the right side of the walkway coming up from the 100 building, are the people going up. Unfortunately, those people on that side of the walkway have to duck, slip, and slide in order to get to the building where their class is. A certain amount of intuition, bravado, and “hand-blinkers” are needed to avoid the throngs of students going the opposite direction on the walkway. On the back pathway, it’s an Olympic marathon trying to get all the way from the 1000 building to the 100 building before the bell rings, but usually it can be done on a rainy day when no one wants to get rained on and clogs up the main, covered walkway.

In the hallways of the buildings however, there is an entirely different set of obstacles to overcome— the students themselves. Most students move quickly through the halls and get straight to class. These people get the Golden Student award. They deserve a round of applause. For every Golden Student, there is of course, many more that are not. There are the Slow Talkers/ Texters, the Congregators, and the generally Oblivious ones. If stuck behind one of these three obstacles, usually a quick “Excuse me” will work wonders—however, if that doesn’t work, the Passing Technique will get you around them and on your way to class. Regardless of how you get to class, how you walk, or where you go, it’s important to remember that manners can make a difference, and no matter how fast you need to get to class, patience will take you far.

Health Fair at Bridgewater Senior Center - The free

Senior Health Fair hosted by the Bridgewater Senior Center held on March 29 had hundreds in attendance. Generous donations by the Lions Club Mobile Eye Center, Wegmans, Bridgewater Diner, Bagels 4 U, and Readington Farms treated those in attendance to a delicious array of foods, fruits and beverages. Over forty health advocates presented everything from skin cancer screenings, vision screenings, hearing evaluations, sleep evaluation and a diabetes screening. Home health care agencies, medical supply companies, government agencies and assisted living and non-profit organizations also offered information on their services and had gift baskets which were raffled off. This annual event is part of the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign and was deemed to be very successful.

Many of these early Raritan baseball players still live locally today. Guy Izzo, Jim Sibilia, Al Capetta, Ralph Cusati, Buddy DeLucia, Allie DeLucia and many others are still in town. In 1956, the Little League MVP was Bob Andreychak - who today is the “assistant” Recreation Director in Raritan. Today’s Recreation Director, Rich Bartolucci, also played in the Raritan Little League in the early years. John Pacifico, Recreation Chairman from 1978-1988, described the program during his tenure as “a thriving operation.” He said, “There were leagues for various age levels from pre Little League, Little League, Pony League, and Senior League. Each league had about six teams.” This year the Raritan baseball program has only one team in each age group. They play in a league with surrounding towns that also only have one or two teams. Today kids have so many other activities that baseball is no longer dominant. For this article, the author had the opportunity to bring together for a photo six men who played or coached in those early days of Little League. They are mostly around 70-years-old. On the day of the photo, the men arrived and greeted each other with excitement. Old baseball stories easily came to mind. As we waited for the last guy to show up, some bats were brought out for the photo. When these old timers picked up the bats a certain look came into their eye. Several moved away from the group and crouched into a baseball stance and gave it a hard practice swing. I could tell that these guys had once indeed been ball players. All of them had been all-stars, two were once the league MVP, and one, Guy Izzo, still holds the home run record. In the 1950s, baseball was called the National Pastime for a reason. As the men lined up for the photo I saw cheerful and grateful guys, and for this one moment they were 10-12 years old again, hanging with the same guys on the same field they once played. by Sharanya Pulapura The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier - No matter who we are or where we’re from, we all face the challenges of growing up. The struggle to stand out and the struggle to fit in make the teenage years a challenging test of willpower and strength of character. Sometimes, adolescents turn to fiction to escape from the reality of the world they live in, but often times, they connect the most to the books that precisely capture the ups and downs of their own lives. In his novel The Chocolate War, Robert Cormier tells a raw and honest story about a young man’s daring attempt to stray from the beaten track. The Chocolate War takes place in Trinity High School, a corrupt fictional school controlled by a secret society of students called the Vigils. The mastermind behind the group’s power is the cunning Archie Costello, who distributes “assignments” to the Trinity students. He forces his peers to obey his commands or face dire consequences. When the school’s headmaster announces a project to double the sales at Trinity’s yearly chocolate sale fundraiser, Archie gives Jerry Renault, the novel’s protagonist, the “assignment” of refusing to sell chocolate for ten days. But when the ten days have passed and Jerry still refuses to sell, a thrilling and disturbing tale of courage and defiance begins to unfold. The Chocolate War embodies many of the struggles faced by adolescents and leaves readers asking themselves the same question Jerry asks himself over the course of the story: “Do I dare disturb the universe?”

guest speakers. The main events of the day centered on FLDC’s purpose of fostering student interest and initiative in finance, investing, and economics. Attending students could hear speakers relate their various experiences as financial professionals. These speeches all had a focus on the positive and contributory role that finance plays in society, ranging from the assistance given to small businesses in New Jersey by the NJEDA to the large global impact of microfinance loans. Students also had the option of participating in a variety of different competitions, including a “Stock Analysis” competition and “Economic Analysis” competition. Top

performers of these competitions received honorary plaques and recognition at the conference. The creation and expansion of FLDC itself has been a story in the making. Started last year by Nayan Bhat and Arvind Anandacoumar as an economics club at BridgewaterRaritan High School, the organization expanded into nine different schools in just a year. Each school chapter runs and coordinates events that deliver on FLDC’s goal to develop student curiosity in finance as well as stress the importance of ethical financial practices. The schools get together at the FLDC conference where students can meet and exchange ideas with others who share similar interests. With a short but accomplished history behind it, FLDC has a future that looks especially promising. CoPresident Nayan Bhat, a junior at Bridgewater-Raritan High School, along with a cast of returning student board members including Sid Balaji, Aakash Jagdale, Steven Sun, Suraj Anandalwar, and Javesh Gandhi have already begun preparations for next year’s conference. Co-President Arvind Anandacoumar and student board members Nikita Shah and Franklin Yin, who are all high school seniors, plan to continue their involvement in FLDC. FLDC plans to expand its reach and impact many more students in the years to come. With the vast amount of student support for FLDC and with the backing of many prominent members of the financial community, a future where finance and economics have a positive reputation may not be so far after all.

Left: Bridgewater senior Ryan Hollingsworth is an integral part of the Panther’s attack. The lacrosse team is currently undefeated.

Boys Lacrosse - BR has rampaged out of the gate to an 8-0 record,

but who really expected anything less? The BR Lax team is coming off a glorious State Championship season and led by the returning seniors, Bridgewater-Raritan is one of the top 15 ranked teams in the nation. The team is guided under veteran coach, Chuck Apel. Senior, Scott Bieda leads the team with 21 points and following him with 17 points is goal scorer, Justin Higgins. Rutgers commit, Ryan Hollingsworth and Delaware commit, John Longordo each have posted 11 points. Other standouts include Vince Colatriano, Lehigh bound Ray Mastroianni, and goalie Zack Jones who has only allowed 12 goals through six contests. The squad will easily be in the mix for States along with being vaulted in the power rankings as one of the top High School Lax programs in the nation.

Below: Senior Jared Guritzky goes for the kill on a ball set by teammate Anthony Mandraccia.

Girls Lacrosse - The girls have stumbled a bit early with a 2-7

mark. The team is led by senior Taylor Mygatt. Senior Erin Eckert has been titanic with 25 goals and senior Jessica Casterline also has chipped in with 12 points. Junior Rachel Yaney is one of the top goal scorers with 10.

Baseball - The boys have hit the diamond and are perched at a 3-6

record. The team endured a great loss of seniors last year, but players have fulfilled their roles quite nicely. BR Head Coach, Max Newill guides the bunch. Senior Zach Pacifico is not only a quality batter, but pitcher as well. Mike Fair has produced a steady diet of offense for BR along with senior Tommy Friar and junior Josh Jankowski. The pitching rotation is effective as well with Ray Bertram, Zach Pacifico, and James Graziani.

Softball - The BR softball team is stacked with talent. They are at a 5-3 standing. The group is superior on offense with standouts such as Jordan Stephenson, Nikki Thomas, Nicole Braun, and Brianna Arends. Senior leadership is provided by Arends, Megan Sousa, and Nicole McClelland. The pitching duo of sophomore Megan Colline and freshman Abby Herman is also lethal to opposing teams as both have combined for 24 strikeouts and 5 wins.

Bryan Finn and Andrew Liou have also made their share of contributions. Senior Drew Ungerleider leads the teams defense at libero.

Community Gathers for Scoreboard Dedication in Honor of B-R Athlete

L-R: Bridgewater Mayor Dan Hayes; Managing Trustee of The Michael Bruce Fund Inc., Eugene J. Kirkwood Sr. (holding Michael Bruce’s lacrosse stick); and Co-Presidents of the BRHS Panther Athletic Club MaryBeth Fanning and Trish Stagg stand in front of the newly dedicated scoreboard. The Bridgewater-Raritan community gathered to honor the memory of Michael Bruce with a scoreboard dedication ceremony on April 16th. Michael Bruce was outstanding at the game of lacrosse and played attack for Bridgewater East wearing #8. In 1988, he suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury that left him a quadriplegic under the total support of a respirator and 24-hour care. Immediately after his accident, his friends, classmates and the community responded by raising funds to help offset the medical costs. Today, The Michael Bruce Fund, a non-profit entity, assists others who have been affected by spinal cord injuries. To continue the legacy of Michael Bruce (#8) and to promote the sport of lacrosse, The Michael Bruce Fund partnered with the BRHS Panther Athletic Club to purchase and

erect an electronic scoreboard on the new turf field at the BRHS sports complex. At the April 16th ceremony Gene Kirkwood, managing trustee of the fund, said, “The scoreboard is in recognition of Michael Bruce and the thousands of people who will use the field.” During the dedication several people shared their memories of Michael Bruce as a person and an athlete. B-R lacrosse coach Chuck Apel recalled, “Mike always gave his best on and off the field. With this field, we are keeping Mike’s memory alive.” Mike’s former teammate Brian Kirkwood spoke to the lacrosse players who were present at the dedication, “Every time you score a goal, think of Michael smiling down at you.”
