Bridgewater Resident Recognized with Volunteer of the Year Award

Paul Kieltyka, SVY CEO, with Stephanie Salzano, Spooky Sprint Race Director. Somerset Valley YMCA volunteer Stephanie Salzano was recognized by the Somerset Hills YMCA for the dedication and time she has spent organizing the Y’s annual Spooky Sprint 5K. Salzano was nominated for the award by the Somerset Valley YMCA, which hosts the Spooky Sprint 5K through its

Somerville branch. She was one of 25 volunteers from nonprofit organizations recognized for their efforts at a communitywide dinner on November 14th. Salzano created and organized the 5K, a fundraiser for the Somerset Valley Y’s Strong Kids campaign. Through her hard work and promotion, the event, held this year on October 13th,

more than doubled in size compared to its inaugural year last year. This year, nearly 300 runners signed up to run. The proceeds of the 5K help support families in need with reduced-price memberships, camp and daycare scholarships. Somerset Valley YMCA CEO Paul Kieltyka presented the award to Salzano, praising her as a tireless advocate for the Spooky Sprint run, which is designed so that all ages can walk and run together. This year, runners ranged from 8 to 84 years old. As she accepted the plaque, presented during the 25th Annual Somerset Hills YMCA Volunteer Recognition Night, Salzano thanked the Somerset Valley Y for giving her the opportunity to do volunteer work. “I volunteer for selfish reasons – I am fulfilled by helping others, said Salzano, a Bridgewater resident. “The Spooky Sprint was an idea I thought I would love to take on. When I approached Paul Kieltyka about organizing this event, he supported me fully. It has been amazing to see my mission come to life.

Somerset County Senior Center in Raritan participated in a drumming circle lead by Sharon Silverstein on November 19th. Drumming can be performed while sitting, so people with difficulty being ambulatory can have an enjoyable and uplifting time creating music while getting in some very good exercise. Memory is stimulated, warmth returns to their hands, motion becomes less labored and smiles appear upon the faces of all that participate.
