The students of Miss Masud’s 5th grade AI/E Language Arts classes at Hillside Intermediate School were amidst their study of the Nonfiction/Informational genre when they began their “mock interview experience. In order to enrich and apply nonfiction research into their writing, students were asked to imagine it was 2024 and they were college graduates in search of their dream job. So, how did our 5th graders embark on their journey into their future? Step 1: research. Students researched universities/colleges, majors/minors, and possible courses linked to their goals. To guide students’ research, stu-

dents were given 5 focus questions. First, which university/ college would they be attending? Second, what sets them apart? Third, what will their major/ minor be? Fourth, what extracurricular activities will they be partaking in? And finally, calculating their GPA based on their current grades. Following this, students had to decide where they would be applying for a job. Once students had all of the necessary information, they started work on their individualized cover letters and resumes. Included in their resumes were their educational backgrounds, their work “experiences, extracurricular activities, computer and language skills and any honors they anticipate receiving. As a final assessment, interviews were scheduled with various administration and faculty members, including the Principal, Mrs. Pennington, and Vice Principal, Mrs. Zamrok. Interviewers used a rubric to score students on areas such as eye contact, appropriate dress and demeanor, hand shake, and relevancy of information. Overall, almost all students were “hired for the job.

Caritas Chamber Chorale is seeking singers of all voice parts (SATB) interested in performing many styles of a cappella sacred music for its 2013 spring season. Caritas Chamber Chorale, founded and directed by Barbara Sanderman, sings benefit concerts for the Adorno Fathers’ St. Francis Caracciolo Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa. Since 2005, the Chorale has performed concerts at venues in central and northern NJ and has raised over $50,000 for the African Mission. In recent years, the Chorale has been supporting the operating expenses of the Mission’s Gianni Diurni Primary School in the city of Goma. The Chorale rehearses on Friday evenings in Bridgewater. No membership fee is required; singers participate on a volunteer basis. Singers should have some choral experience; some music reading ability and a good ear are essential. For more info please see www.caritaschamberchorale.org. By sharing your talents as a Caritas singer, you will be helping those in need in one of the poorest areas of the world. Rehearsals begin April 5, for our June concert series. Auditions are being held by appointment up until the first rehearsal date of April 5th. Please contact Barbara Sanderman at director@ caritaschamberchorale.org or phone 732.718.0775 for detailed audition and rehearsal schedule information.

And the Winner is...

Congratulations to the winner of our ad symbol contest, Kim Shulack of Bridgewater. Kim won a $50 gift certificate from Chimney Rock Inn of Bridgewater. In the above photo, Kim (left) is shown receiving her prize from restaurant manager Allison Boehm. The Chimney Rock Inn, “Central Jersey’s Family Tradition, has a flavorful past dating back to late 1863. Many generations of local families and businesses have dined at “The Rock for decades, and as the area has grown, so has The Rock, with locations in Bridgewater and Gillette to serve its dedicated crowds. The restaurants boast of three private dining areas and a bar room with cozy booths, flat screen TVs and in Gillette, a wood burning fireplace. The private dining areas are available for large groups, corporate luncheons and meetings, with many package options. Many local companies refer to The Rock as their corporate lunchroom because it’s the casual alternative. However lovely and comfortable the restaurants are, the real story is the food, and when people mention Chimney Rock Inn, one statement usually follows – “Great Pizza! The Rock’s thin crust pizza has been part of the local diet for more than 60 years. The Chimney Rock Inn surely has had a colorful past, but readily welcomes the future with open arms providing Central New Jersey with excellent food at prices that are beyond reasonable. The restaurants are constantly improving what they offer by always using zero trans fat oils and adding more items that are locally sourced, heart healthy, vegetarian and always delicious. Chimney Rock Inn is open Sunday through Wednesday, 11:30 am – 10:00 pm and Thursday through Saturday 11:30 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. Reservations and call-aheads are accepted.
