U. S. Bar Table Championships Kiamco and Villarreal Take 18th U.S. Bar Table Championships All Around Titles Come snow or shine the U.S. Bar Table Championships (USBTC) held February 21-27, 2011 brings players from all across the globe to “the Biggest Little City in the World.” Hosted at the Terrible’s Sands Regency Casino Hotel in Reno, Nevada, the $25,250 guaranteed added event celebrated its 18th anniversary in 2011. The event had over 450 entries in six divisions: Men’s / Mixed 10-Ball, 9-Ball, 8-Ball and Women’s 10-Ball, 9-Ball and 8-Ball. This was the first year in the event’s history to include a full set of women’s divisions and women’s All Around bonuses. The USBTC is produced by CueSports International (CSI), sponsored by Terrible’s Sands Regency and Diamond Billiard Products, and directed by Bad Boys Billiard Productions. During the event players were paid immediately on-site. Over $66,000 was available for cash payouts. The tournament began with the 10-Ball divisions, with 16 women and 93 men. The 9-Ball division started its engine mid-week

with 23 women and 128 men. The 8-Ball competition, with 36 women and 157 men in contention, wrapped up the event. After two years of bandwidth issues at the host venue, the innovative team and internet live pool action leaders, TAR, this year was able to live stream. In the women’s competition, a tornado ripped through all three fields with little mercy. Vivian Villarreal, long time WPBA professional and fan favorite, took first place in all three women’s divisions. Her dominance solidly secured her the $500 first place All Around Women’s Bonus. Competing for the second place women’s All Around included Melissa “The Viper” Little, Nicole Keeney, Brittany Bryant, and Susan Williams. While the points were close, it was Bryant who came in second in the women’s All Around points behind Villarreal. For the first time in several years, the Men’s / Mixed All Around competition was not dominated by one or two individuals. Instead there were a handful of players who were neck and neck in All Around points throughout the week. The final board of the Men’s / Mixed 10-Ball

division included the diverse crowd of Stevie “the Blade” Moore from Georgia, Canadian Pros Stan Tourangeau and John Morra, Californian Louis Ulrich, Arizona monster Mitch Ellerman, Midwest young gun Branden Ashcroft and 2008 World Pool Master Champion Alex “the Lion” Pagulayan. Going into the 10-Ball finals between Pagulayan and Morra, the railbirds were putting “The Lion” heavily in favor over Morra. The live stream audience was treated to both men playing dead stroke in the first race to 7. However, two scratches on the break by Pagulayan gave Morra the edge needed to win the first set. Coming from the one loss side, Morra would need to beat Pagulayan again in a second set. It was not to be as Pagulayan came back strong and Morra seemed to lose steam, giving Pagulayan an easy win in set two. Heading into mid-week Pagulayan led the men’s All Around points with Morra hot on his heels. However in the 9-Ball division both were knocked out much earlier than anticipated. “The Lion” was ousted by Vegas player Ray Skenandore and the kid from Ontario, Morra, was sent to the sidelines by Phoenix player Nick DeLeon. Both Pagulayan and Morra finished 49th-64th place in the division. The

gate was now wide open to a slew of other players to pursue the meaty $2,000 first place Men’s / Mixed All Around bonus. Prime to take advantage of that opening were Moore, Tourangeau and lesser known Tennessee player Josh O’Neal who all cashed high in the 10-Ball division and two additional dangers, Larry “the Truth” Nevel and top Philippine player Warren Kiamco. The finals of the 9-Ball men’s division were those very two dangers who uncharacteristically didn’t catch the final board earlier in 10-Ball, but earned redemption in the 9-Ball. Nevel’s road to the 9-Ball finals was a long one. After a first loss to Beau Runningen in his third match, Nevel had to grind it through 9 more matches on the one loss side to make it to the mountain. Kiamco was more leisurely in his travel to the finals, enjoying the sweetness of being in the hot seat. The finals came down to Nevel and Kiamco. But even the best grinders can hit a wall. Although Nevel trounced Kiamco 9-2 in the first set, a little déjà-vu of the Pagulayan – Morra 10-Ball final took place. In set two Nevel lost a little steam and Kiamco played solid taking the set 9-6 and first place in the division. Now it appeared there was a new Sherriff in the All Around point list town. Going into the 8-Ball and final division, there were more horses in serious contention for the USBTC All Around bonuses than the 9th race at Aqueduct. The top contenders were Kiamco, Nevel, Moore, Pagulayan, Morra, Ashcraft, O’Neal and Tourangeau. Moore played consistently all week placing 7-8th in the 10-Ball and 5-6th in the 9-Ball. Tourangeau was also one to watch with a 5-6th place finish in the 10-Ball and 7-8th place in the 9-Ball. Although they faltered in the 9-Ball, the 1st and 2nd place finishes in the 10-Ball still put Pagulayan and Morra in solid All Around position. Nevel and Kiamco garnered new life after their 9-Ball finishes and were slightly ahead of Pagulayan and Morra in the point list.

Two darker horses but still in contention were Ashcraft with a 5-6th place finish in the 10-Ball and a 17-24th place in the 9-Ball and O’Neal with a solid 9-12th place finish in the 10-Ball and strong 5-6th finish in the 9-Ball. The top contenders still had to maneuver the 157 player 8-Ball field. Some fared well, some fell to the wayside. The final 8 players included: Amar Kang, O’Neal, Kiamco and Ashcraft on the winner’s side and Morra, Moore, Josh Smith and Ivan Doty on the one loss side. Kang, Smith and Doty could only cash in on the All Around bonuses if they won the 8-Ball division. Kang, Smith and Doty were motivated and potential spoilers to the other 5 players; evidenced when Doty knocked Moore out of the 8-Ball division 5-0. After the dust settled Morra and Kiamco were the last two players standing. While Kiamco again was the hot seat man, Morra meticulously made his way through 10 matches before facing Kiamco. It must have been the taste of his near 10-Ball victory that spurred Morra as he handily double dipped Kiamco 5-2, 5-2 to take the 8-Ball division title. With division play over and points list in hand, it was announced that Kiamco took the $2,000 first place Men’s / Mixed All Around bonus, Morra took the $1,000 second place bonus and the initial lion that roared early in the week, Pagulayan, squeaked past the rest of the field to take the $500 third place bonus. Women’s Grand Masters Challenge

By: Mary Hopkin. Western BCA introduced the Women’s Grand Masters Challenge this year at the 16th Annual Western BCA Regional 8-Ball Championships at the fabulous Chinook Winds Casino Resort, in Lincoln City, OR. As with the Men’s GMC, the Women’s GMC was designed showcase the top talent in this region. Eight of the Northwest’s top women shooters were invited to participate in the event: BCAPL national Masters and Western BCA Grand Masters Liz Cole, Cindy Doty, Kris Robbins, Kimberly Kirk and Andrea Saenz-Maes; Kim Hole was the only competitor who is both a National BCAPL and Western BCA Grand Master. Top ranking Western BCA Masters Cindy Sliva and Carissa Biggs rounded out this field of impressive female shooters. When Biggs was unable to compete, Linda Carter, a Western BCA master was chosen to fill the spot. The tournament’s round robin format pitted each player against the other for a six-game match. Each player received a point for each game they won during the match; the winner determined by total number of wins. When the first round of play ended, Cindy Doty was in the lead after besting opponent Andrea Saenz-Maes by a score of 4-2. The rest of the competitors were tied, with each player earning 3 games from their opponents. “This field is full of talent,” said Saenz-Maes. “If you are not 100 percent, you will lose games. I tried my best, but I feel I didn’t play my best pool.” After the second round, Cindy Sliva and Liz Cole were tied and leading the pack with eight games each. Carter and Doty were keeping the competition tight, with seven games each. And when the third round concluded Carter and Sliva were leading this group of impressive lady players, with 12 games each. But that would take a turn in the fourth round, when Carter beat Sliva 6-0. “I played horribly and she played well,” said Sliva. “That does not make a good combination for me. No matter how hard I tried, I could not finish a rack.” But Sliva wasn’t down for long. She said that she gave herself a good talking to and collected herself before her next match, and took out her frustration on Liz Cole in the fifth round, beating her 5-1. “Cindy Sliva had just come off a 0-6 loss and tore into me,” said Cole. “I didn’t have a chance.” After the fifth round was complete, Carter had 23 games - a full six game lead over the rest of the field. Sliva and Cole were in second, tied with 17 games and Doty trailed them with 16 games. Kim Hole and Kris Robbins were tied with 13 games, Kimberly Kirk had 12 games and Saenz-Maes had 9. Carter gave up a little ground in the sixth round when she lost 2-4 to Hole. “That was probably my best match,” said Hole, who made a very difficult carom on the 8-ball to cinch the match. “I was so excited about making that shot!” Cindy Doty made up ground during that sixth round, beating Cole 5-1. Doty said that the Grand Master Challenge was a little grueling after the long days of playing scotch. “I feel I could have played a lot better,” she said. “I was a little tired from the scotch finals and also a little tight. I think this is where the lack of practice showed the most.” Going into the final round, Carter still held the lead with 25 games. Sliva and Doty were tied with 21 games each and Cole had 18 games. Carter said that despite her lead, she couldn’t let her guard down. “The first two days I was fearless – not nervous or scared or anything,” Carter said. “But the last day I had two tough matches – the Kim’s (Kirk and Hole). And in this round robin format every game is important.” Carter said that her final match was difficult because she was also watching Sliva and Doty, who were right behind her in points, play each other. “I couldn’t concentrate on my match,” she said. Carter, who played Kirk in the final round, said that Kirk made some mistakes and uncharacteristically missed a few balls,

6

giving her two games and leaving her with a total of 27. Sliva beat Doty 5-1 in that final round, to come within a game of the leader the secure the 2nd place finish. Wouldn’t you know the late invitee chosen to fill the vacant spot captured the inaugural Women’s Grand Masters Challenge Title? Carter, aka “Wonder Woman,” won 27 out of a possible 42 games. GMC Tournament Director and organizer, Mike Jensen was on hand to present Linda with a glass art trophy that matched the one Dan Louie received. Both Linda Carter and Cindy Sliva will advance to the ranking of Western BCA Grand Master after their finish in this event. Clark Smith, owner of Malarkey’s Pool & Brew in Tacoma, generously sponsored the event with a $1,500 contribution. All the women said they were honored to play in the event and were very thankful to Smith for sponsoring it. “The tournament was a terrific success and I was proud and honored to have been invited,” said Kirk. “In addition, I think that the live streaming is a terrific opportunity for the growth of the sport.” Robbins said that the field was tough and she enjoyed the competition, but missed playing in the traditional double-elimination format. “One big thing I missed…the heart-pounding hill-to-hill matches and a finals match,” Robbins said. “But I’m very thankful to everyone who volunteers their time to put the regional tournaments together! I very much look forward to these events.” The ladies of Rail2Rail Productions live streamed the Women’s GMC right alongside the Men’s GMC for a very large audience, via the Western BCA website. Photos of the competition can be found on Western BCA website as well, www.westernbca.org. Doty said that the Western BCA Regional Championship Tournament has come a long way and gives players from across the Northwest a great competitive arena to test their skills.“I think it compares to Vegas, which is quite a compliment,” she said. Official Results: 1st Linda Carter, $900 2nd Cindy Sliva, $650. 3rd Tie - Liz Cole, Cindy Doty, $475 5th Tie - Kim Hole, Kris Robbins $375 7th Kimberly Kirk, $300 8th Andrea Saenz-Maes, $250

Men’s Grand Masters Challenge By Bret Baker On March 8-10, 2011, at Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City, Oregon, Western BCA held its 2nd Annual Men’s Grand Masters Challenge, featuring ten of the top players in Oregon, Washington and Canada. The best of the best in the Northwest were invited to match their cue skills against each other in the ultimate competition to see who reigns supreme on the pool table. The game was 8-Ball; the format was round robin. The round robin format is different than the double elimination format most of these players normally compete in. Each player stressed the importance of every game, since the champion would be determined by the total number of wins after all matches had been completed. Every player knew he had to maintain total focus and not let anything get to him, in order to come out on top of this talent-packed group of Grand Masters and Masters. This year’s GMC participants included defending champion, Glenn Atwell, along with fellow national BCAPL and Western BCA Grand Masters, Dan Louie, Mike Zimmerman, and Stan Tourangeau. Also in this group were national BCAPL Masters and Western BCA Grand Masters Rich Geiler and Don Wirtaman. Filling out the field were top Western BCA Master players Eddie Mataya, Matt Horner, Steve Lingelbach and Jim Conway. After Day 1 of the competition, it was apparent that this would be a tightly contested tournament, as no one was able to distance himself from the rest of the pack. The top six players were separated by only 2 points, with Dan Louie holding a slim one point advantage over Rich Geiler. After Day 2, Louie continued his stellar play and held on to a 2 game lead over Eddie Mataya, the only other player able to match Louie’s 17 games won on Day 2. The final day saw competition staying tight, but Dan Louie kept his

head down and forged ahead to a 3-day total of 47 wins out of 56 games and the title of 2011 Men’s Grand Masters Challenge Champion. Eddie Mataya finished second with a very respectable 43 wins in the competition and has graduated to the level of Western BCA Grand Master. The 2010 Grand Masters Challenge Champion, Glenn Atwell, was the only other player able to break the 40-win mark, finishing in third place with 41 wins. Glenn had the honor of presenting Dan with his beautiful glass art trophy. This special event was covered by Rail2Rail Productions, who skillfully provided live streaming on the western BCA website. Thousands of people enjoyed this intense competition, whether they were in the tournament room or watching from home. Western BCA volunteers rolled out the red carpet with a curtained arena, complete with audience seating, which gave these players the stage they deserve. To view pictures from the GMC, visit the Western BCA website at www.westernbca.org. The GMC participants and Western BCA would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Uwajimaya, Asian Grocery and Gifts (www. uwajimaya.com) for its generous sponsorship of this event. Uwajimaya’s financial contribution, combined with all the hard work of the Western BCA volunteers and the tight competition between the players, made this event a tremendous success. Watch for its return at future Western BCA tournaments! Lucky: Well, somewhere along the long road of life, I’ve finally found time to do more follow-up on the U.S. Bar Table Championships. But Reno…wow. The smoke at the Sands was atrocious. It sucked into the playing room like a fastflowing creek. Lucky started hacking every time he went into the tournament room. He was completely bummed out. His old beat up face looked like he’d lost his best friend. He mentioned a conversation with Stevie Moore where he found out that Stevie quit several months ago and said it was one of the best decisions of his life. We’re talking about the reason Lucky quit playing after all those years! It was the smoke and it affected his health! I know, I know, those of you who smoke are heaving big sighs of smoke and disgust reading this, but thankfully, more and more of you have been able to actually quit and know the joy of breathing again. But outside of that, the tournament seemed like it was run well. Bad Boys Productions has a pretty good crew and they got on it. So, while the smoke kept Lucky away from one of his favorite pool events in the country and sulking in his room most of the time, flipping channels and trying to find old westerns to watch, it didn’t keep us from going down to the Pneumatic Diner. He’d even offered him some breaking tips -- lucky for Pat, who immediately put them into practice and got some instant gratification. He was breaking great and making a ball every time. Back in Lucky’s room after the event, we were sitting around eating Diner leftovers, and he told me if Pat could have matched that with some run outs a few more times at the end like he did in the beginning, he would have won the whole thing. In between slices of pesto spinach and feta pizza and cranberry-pistachio yogurt salad (unbelievably delicious), Lucky revealed more about who else he saw when he snuck in behind my back. He mentioned Barbara McDonald -- said in his opinion she was one of the best tournament direction helpers Jay Helfert or Reno’s events had ever seen – said he would be hard pressed to remember anyone over the years so pleasant and professional. Question: What type of tip do you use on your pool cue?

Answer: When I was younger I swore by medium Le Pro pool tips and thought I

would never try another brand in my life. Then, A few years ago, my friend and fellow pro Tiffany Nelson asked me to try a “Sniper” made by Tiger Products. After trying them I have now become an official “Sniper girl” for life! I love them… Over the years I have tried so many different types of tips and found that layered tips seem to last longer and you don’t miscue as much. Not to say that non-layered tips are not good I just prefer a layered tip. If you asked any other pro-player the same question they all might respond saying they LOVE their type of tips. ALL players have there own preferences, and there is no right/wrong answer. But what is important to me, is that I don’t wear through tips as fast and I for sure do not want to miscue on every other shot. There are so many to chose from; Moori, Elk Master, Le Pro, Triangle, Flying Pig, Kamui, Samsara, Stingray, Talisman, Tiger, Water Buffalo, and even Milk Duds. The Break - April 2011

Watch Out. It’s Contagious! By Samm Diep © October 2010

In my recent interview with Hall of Famer Nick Varner, he said: “You’re always liable to miss those hard shots; you got to brush them off and just try to learn from ‘em what you can as far as getting used to the table and stuff so you don’t miss the next shot you come up against. You try to not let it become contagious. It becomes like cancer where you go from bad to worse. That happens to a lot of players.” Unfortunately, there is no antibiotic you can take to keep this condition from progressing when you start to catch a miss. It could be Samm Diep that the balls are just getting a little sticky or maybe the air is humid and everything is reacting a little differently than you’re expecting. The spin exaggerates and combinations become much tougher. When you start missing a shot here and there due to the table conditions, it’s very common to start losing confidence. That’s when, as Nick says, “it becomes like a cancer where you go from bad to worse.” Once your confidence is shaken, it’s very difficult to regain your composure and that’s when we often make bad decisions too. It’s really easy to start questioning your mechanics or abilities when you miss a couple back to back shots. The key is to be aware of why you’re missing so that you can make the appropriate adjustments. It could be something mechanical or a variance in the equipment. Whatever it is, this is where all those long hours of practice come in handy. It’s so critical to be in tune with your game so that when the conditions and the equipment are slightly off, you can adjust quickly before it’s too late. Pay close attention to what’s happening. If you know your game, then you should know what the cue ball should be doing on certain shots. Home Remedy: Practice on as many different tables and in as many different playing conditions as possible. The only way to recognize when things go from bad to worse is by experiencing it. Learning to adjust to various circumstances will keep the cancer from spreading. When it starts happening in a match, reduce your speed and use less english until you can make the adjustment. Remember, each time you approach the table, it’s a new shot, a new opportunity to do your best, and anything that happened before is now in the past. Learn from it, and then let it go. The above excerpt is from the article, “Nick Varner: The Original Comeback Kid.” Go to AzBilliards.com to read the complete interview and other Pro Vision interviews. Spinning The Wagon Wheel Trick Shots by Sarge By Ken “Sarge” Aylesworth

By: Bob Jewett

San Francisco Billiard Academy www.sfbilliards.com In my column last month, I described the basics of the Wagon Wheel position system. The idea was to use just follow or draw to take the cue ball the right distance in the right direction to just touch a target ball for position. (You’re not actually getting position on the other object balls; they are just providing a goal for position. If you prefer, just place a coin where you want the cue

ball to go.) This time I’m going to ask you to perfect your side spin to achieve the same sort of result using a cushion. In the top shot in the diagram, the object ball is by the middle of the end cushion about one ball’s width off the rail for each shot. The target object balls are placed on each diamond. The cue ball is placed so that when shooting the shot, your stick passes over the 11 ball. For your first shot, pocket the 15 and use right English to send the cue ball towards the 1 ball. Adjust your spin and speed so the cue ball just reaches the 1. This will probably take your best side spin. Consider your control on the shot good enough when you can leave the cue ball within a ball diameter of the position target, and go on to the next shot. For the 2 ball, you will need less right side spin, but you probably can’t get the angle off the cushion with just follow. By the time you get to the 4 or 5 ball, just follow with no side spin should be sufficient. To get to the 6, you have a choice. You could play with no side spin and (Wagon Wheel continued on page 24) Happy Hour til 10 Well Drinks $2.50

BANK/KICK DISCIPLINE (reprinted from June Issue 2003)

This month we are going to explore one of the harder Disciplines Bank/Kick. My first four articles on Artistic Pool were from the four easier Disciplines. The four easier Disciplines are performed on the first day of our two day, North American Artistic Pool Continental Qualifier for the World Championship. Starting this month I’ll be covering the four harder Disciplines that are performed on the second day, Bank/Kick, Ken “Sarge” Aylesworth July - Stroke, August - Jump, and September Masse. One of my greatest accomplishments is that I hold the World Record for: Most points scored for the four hardest Disciplines of Artistic Pool (Masse, Jump, Stroke and Bank/Kick), for all continental qualifiers ever held. I set this record in October 2001 during the North American Continental Qualifier held at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, California. Onto this month’s shot that had a Degree of Difficulty, (D.O.D.) of 6.

Object ball letter coincides with corresponding pocket letter. To set this shot up position the object ball B in the center of the table. The cue ball is placed on the vertical centerline, plus one diamond segment from pocket B. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball to B ball. Object ball B will bank to cushion #4, then to #2 cushion, then back to #4 and finally be made in B pocket. A scratch is allowed. Here are some helpful hints on executing this shot. I use a touch of low and a lot of left English on this shot. I aim the cue ball at ball B for approximately a ¾ ball aim. On this shot you will use a hard stroke. Ball B travels 14 diamonds of distance before being pocketed. If you over cut ball B it won’t reverse back to cushion 4, so pay close attention to what the object ball does. Aim to hit ball B fuller if it doesn’t reverse, or use a little more left English. Please call me at (206) 719-2695 with your questions.

Valley Forge, PA TAP, LLC celebrates 15 Years of Rally in the Valley Events !

Shot Gods Elite 1st Place Little River, SC, Mar. 17th, 2011 - TAP Pools Amateur Tour is about family and tradition. TAP is also about innovation, taking the old and mixing it with the new, striving to be better, promoting the industry with sportsmanship and class, with an owner that is the key to our success because of his unbelievable foresight. TAP has been learning from our past to take us all to a very bright future. TAP is one team, with one goal. In 1996, TAP’s founder and owner Loyd Schonter started the Rally in the Valley Dream Team event and concept, in conjunction with his good friend Allen Hopkins, who had the Super Billiards Expo, in Valley Forge, PA. At that first event, less than 30 teams were there from Virginia and Maryland. Charlie Brocklehurst, Owner of MidAtlantic TAP Licensee # 01, stated “It’s hard to believe that 15 years have passed already. I can still remember the first rally. There were very few teams in a large convention center. Now, we’re overflowing with players. As one of the few territory owners who was there at the start, I can’t express enough the joy and pride I have with the TAP Members.” “Every year, they come and play with the understanding that it’s about the love of the game that binds us all together.” Today, TAP’s Rally in the Valley event has to be limited to 144 teams through out the USA and Canada. It now has 5 Singles Brackets, by skill level and it’s infamous midnight mini tournaments that players line up, to sign up and compete in. Last year, it’s little brother event Rally at Bally’s was formed and ran in conjunction with the TAP National event, due to the popularity of this Valley Forge event. If you ask Loyd Schonter, What do you think when you look at the event from the first year to now, does it surprise you how it’s grown? He will tell you he knew the event would be successful and popular, but he credits his tournament staff for making the event, one that services the player and has evolved it into what it is today. Schonter states “Now, that we have 144 teams, we will keep it there until we make sure it is the best served event we have. It is all about the player. The staff I have in place, can take care of it without involvement from me. That’s what I am extremely proud of.” “They need the deadlines we have put into place to organize and coordinate and each time, it continues to get better because of that planning time.” TAP is proud of the event staff they have, comprised of all TAP Licensees, Operators and Representatives from throughout the USA and Canada. This hardworking, dedicated staff works long hours at these events and come back every day to do it again, but are happy to commit and dedicate themselves to each other, the corporate office and the player. Kelly Senior, TAP Operations and Event Director stated, “Two years ago, when I came into this position, I didn’t fully appreciate as a player or an operator, what this staff truly does, today I know.” “Throughout the planning, setup and running of the event, you tend to get caught up in the moment and in the heat of the battle, but the stress, the sleepless nights are all worth it, when you know you have brothers and sisters up there with you, not above you, not below you, but beside you who appreciate you, because we are one team, with one goal.” “That goal, to give the TAP player the best we have to give; organize and run an event they can appreciate, that always has them in mind.” Senior continued, “You know you have met that goal, when a player says, “Thanks for all you do”, when they acknowledge they see it; when they respond on the TAP message board and Facebook page with more positives than negatives, and constructively tell us what they see that can be improved and their suggestion to help make it better. With each event we see it getting better and better. “That is what makes it all worth it.”

12

The Break - April 2011

But Senior, who is new to the crew, looks to those that have been in it for the long haul. Bruce Williamson, TAP’s National Director and Sam Rullo, TAP’s Singles Director have been working these events for 13 to 14 years. The balance of old school and new school coming together and reviewing each process of this team, is what makes this the successful group that it is. Returning from the good ole days, is Chuck Schonter TAP’s Licensee Support Director. Chuck, the brother of owner Loyd Schonter, can tell many stories of the past and appreciate what TAP and this event are today. He stated, “ It was awesome, very well run, best I have been at , definite improvement over the years, all of you should be very proud of such an accomplishment.” This year, additional licensees have stepped up to the plate to help and help they did. April Bradley and staff from Upstate TAP, SC; Charlie Brinkman L & N TAP, PA, George and Nancy Natili Route 19 TAP, PA; John Heiken Southwestern Indiana TAP; Dan Mitchell Rock Solid TAP, ME; Carl Johnson Big Dawgs on TAP, FL; and Cindy and Rusty Williard, North Texas TAP with many more committing to help at future events as well. Senior stated, “this will help us with continued success in the future, a willingness to help and be a part of our events by our licensees, operators and representatives. You can have a first rate staff, but you always need new blood to help with breaks, on the job training for their own events and if needed potential replacements that are all ready to go. A back up plan and team are never a bad idea.” As a result of not only a great staff, TAP is growing at record numbers. Territories are selling every week. So, for the first time in history the Rally in the Valley Dream Team event sold out in Mid February. The 144 dream team event kicked off at 8 a.m. and ran through Sunday. TAP’s dream team event is a round robin event, that goes to single elimination of Elite, Championship and Best of the Rest . This guarantees 4 rounds of team play. Over $100,000 in total prizes were given out at the event. Players enjoyed 100% payback in the singles event; open Diamond tables during their events, along with great competition of players throughout the USA and Canadian leagues representing each of their TAP territories and mixing it up with others. As always, entry of all score sheets for team and singles events, ensures an overall solid handicap based on player performance week to week and at National competitions. New Pool Net features were used for the planning of the event, which took manual processes and made them automated, which efficiently and effectively streamlined preparations. Autoflag was used once again at the event, ensuring any player playing two levels above their handicap twice, is disqualified from the event. As players are getting use to this new feature, it enables the National Director to explain to the player about this disqualification process and show them the reasoning behind it. Taking an upset player, with politeness and professionalism showing them why such action must be taken, so they can accept it with the facts and figures. Once again, the Predator Group was an event sponsor providing items from their Predator and Poison lines to all TAP players; Poison Jump Cues to each player on the Elite Bracket Dream Team various Cues for the player prize giveaway. Their overwhelming support of our Rally and National event has been greatly appreciated, through out the years. Additional sponsors included, AZ Billiards, Fox and Hound, D & D Cue Repair and Staybridge Suites in Malvern. On Sunday, March 13th the Champions were crowned ! Congratulations to the 2011 TAP Rally in the Valley Elite Board Champions, “Shot Gods” from Kansas. Players; Jeff Wharton, Patrick Cady, Joe Johnson,

Product Review FingerSlides

Prestige Billiard Balls This amazing ball set is the standard 2.25” pool balls but has NO numbers on them! They are made from imported resin and have a standard color scheme. Oh and did I say NO numbers. It makes playing 8 ball fun, solids and stripes are easy to tell. BUT if you are playing 9 or 10 ball you really have to know your ball colors, so you don’t shoot out of sequence. These balls were created by Steve Kesting, the owner of L8START LLC. Steve writes, “I have been in beautiful Seattle, Washington since 1994 after serving a few years in the Army. In the past 17 years, I have met some great players and this is my way of giving back to a game that will always be my favorite.” You can order your own set of Prestige Billiard Balls from Steve’s website www.prestigebilliardballs.com for only $79.00 or from Amazon.com See Ad page 22

This unique billiard product was sent to us by Nancy L Cote to try out. When we first saw it we were a little skeptical and amused. It looked like it was very uncomfortable and hard to get used to. We were wrong. The FingerSlides are easy to slide on, so light you almost forget you have them on. If you can’t get used to wearing the traditional cue glove but still want that slide and feel, you should try these. They are easy to wash, handmade in the USA, come in black, tan and striped. Size S-XL. Nancy inspects and makes them by hand! You can order the FingerSlides from Nancy’s website www.cuezctc. com for only $15 each. While you are there look around, you can also order a cue tip cover or embroidered personalized billiard towels. Put your name or your team name on them!

Shootout at the Sands Story by Steve Heiman

The Gimme Pool League completed it first season with a premier Shootout at the Sands Tournament in Reno, NV. Over 250 players and 40 teams from the Northern Nevada region congregated to grab the top honors and prize money. The event had 7 different divisional tournaments including 8-ball A, B and C division Team play, A and B division second chance tournaments, and the Men’s and Women’s Top Player Shootout.

Diamond team rolled to an easy 9-1 victory over Sand and Sage to advance to the semi-final. On the lower bracket Trader Dicks had two easy wins over Spiro’s 2 and Kelly’s Heroes to advance to the semis, where they faced a bit of a tougher match against MJ’s Thursday. After falling behind early 1-7 against the tough Trader Dicks team Mj’s fought back to make it a tight match at 6-7 before the Trader Dicks team was able to close it out for a 9-6 victory. In

finals were close but Trader Dicks could not ever get ahead and lost another close match 7-9 to give the Diamond team the victory and the 1st place prize money of $3000. In the B bracket team event the Ormsby Carps moved through the winners side with consecutive easy victories to secure the top of the winners bracket, where they faced a tough Toads team that they had already put into the losers bracket.

The A division team event began with 16 teams fighting it out in a race to 9. After a tight 9-7 match against Ormsby Thursday, the

the top bracket the Diamond team rolled 9-1 over Sand and Sage to advance to the winner bracket finals and a match up with Trader Dicks. The match went back and forth with neither team gaining more than a two game advantage. Trader Dicks got to the hill first to lead 8-6 but Diamonds was able to win the next two to send it to a final tie-breaker game, where Jeff Heath won the flip for break and was able to control the table to eke out a 9-8 victory for the Diamond team and secure the top of the winners bracket. Trader Dicks won a loser side final against MJ’s Thursday for a second win over that team and a chance at revenge against the Diamond team. The

The 64 Top Player shoot out saw a field of the best players in Northern Nevada battle it out in a race to 5. The tough field saw a host of hill-hill matches that could have gone either way. Roger Hovden advanced with strong wins over Jeff Heath and Tall Paul Barros, but lost in the semis to Carl Wilson Jr. In the top of the bracket Lawrence Sowell advanced with a series of easy victories to face Carl in the winners side finals but stumbled with 3 scratches on his break. That was more than enough of an opening for Carl who took advantage to win the winners bracket with a 5-3 win. After losing an early match to Roger Hovden, Jeff Heath advanced through the rest of the losers bracket to face Sowell in the loser side final, where he was able to win a tough match as both players battled fatigue at the end of a long weekend. Sadly Carl was forced to leave early but both Jeff and Larry had graciously agreed to a prize money split and acceded the first place honors to Carl.

16th Annual Western BCA By: John Lewis, with contributions from Rebecca Easley Where were you during the week of March 7-13, 2011? If you were at Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City, Oregon, chances are you were witness to the largest Regional 8-Ball tournament in the country: the 16th Annual Western BCA Regional 8-Ball Championships. What an event! Western BCA put on another great show. This tournament had everything; a record-breaking 1265 players - 3 of whom were junior players, $113,000 in prize money, giveaway prizes, free entries to BCAPL Nationals, the Grand Masters Challenge - featuring an inaugural Women’s event, a Diamond Pool Table raffle, live streaming every minute on the website, thousands of games of pool, and even a tsunami warning to keep things interesting. WOW!!! It was a sight to behold. Upon arrival at the beautiful Oregon coast, pool players immediately headed to Chinook Winds Casino Resort, where the superior staff enjoys a reputation for taking great care of the players. The tournament room doors opened to reveal the arena for the largest regional tournament of its type in the United States. Also making this event the best are the vendors - Billiards 911, The Parlor, Billiards and Barstools, and Hustlin USA, all of whom supply players with their pool needs and novelties desires. Bad Boys Billiard Productions put out a spread of 80 Diamond Pool Tables, each with matching lights, to ensure the best table conditions possible. The live streaming stage was set up with high-tech cameras and equipment by Rail2Rail Productions, to really make this a memorable sporting event. And all of this was orchestrated by a handful of dedicated Western BCA volunteers. Monday morning at 9 a.m. all balls broke loose in Mixed Scotch Doubles and the games were on. In the Open division, Players Club LTD’s (LTD) Alisha Rogers and Chris Suarez jumped out and took the point, but the Northwest Players League (NPL) team of David Ringler and Mandi Ritthaler were not to be denied, coming back through the loser’s bracket to challenge the point. Ringler and Ritthaler took the first match, but they had to beat Suarez and Rogers twice to win. In the end, Suarez and Rogers prevailed and earned the first championship title of this tournament. In the Master Scotch division, there were some fireworks as NPL’s Mike Stevens and Cindy Doty came from the loser’s side to upstage Rich Geiler and Shari Ross of LTD. After a grueling first match and defeat, the team of Geiler and Ross tried to pull it together to avoid the double-dip, but Stevens and Doty were in the groove and won the first set. Playing late did not seem to bother them at

all and they played like it was three in the afternoon to take the title of Master Mixed Scotch Doubles Champions at three in the morning. Tuesday morning began with the opening rounds of the Singles events. This year in the Men’s Novice division, Emerald Valley’s (EV) Dan Maricle rose up and took the win. In the Women’s Novice field, Dawn Mason, from Thurston County (TC), showed she is ready to move up by taking the win. Both players received a trophy, entry into the 2011 9-Ball Open Singles and a set of special numberless billiard balls from Prestige Billiard Products. The Men’s Open B division featured 239 entries. There are many up and comers in this division, making it fun to watch. Only eight players could fit on the final bracket, so those fighting to be on top had to get tough. Inland BCA’s (INL) Terry Thurlow showed his stuff by taking the point and putting NPL’s Akio Nakashima in the loser’s bracket. Akio showed his resilience by knocking off Nick Dizard and challenging Terry for the top spot. In a rerun of the point match, Terry and Akio squared off again. This time Akio came out on top. In the deciding 2nd match, Akio was the stronger player and pulled off the victory. There were a lot of new faces in the Women’s Open event. The women played well into the night to earn a spot on the final board. Out of 140 entrants, only eight would make the cut. The final bracket contained many familiar faces as these ladies battled it out. Jessica Orth proved she was up to the challenge by taking the point and never looking back! Jessica earned her championship and is the one of only three players at this event to remain undefeated. Jessica also received FREE entry into the Women’s Singles at BCAPL Nationals. Shirley Morgan put up a good fight to earn second place honors. The Women’s Master division welcomes both NPL women with open arms and tables. This year in the Senior divisions, there were some exceptional matches played. Keep in mind that these are players who taught the rest – parents, grandparents, teachers, coaches and mentors who developed the next generation of top notch pool players. With that in mind, they showed they were no slouches on the tables. The Women’s Senior event was topped by Central Washington’s Patty Hayes in first and NPL’s Jean Bartholomew in second. In the Men’s Senior bracket, Ronnie Migues, from Cascade Pool League (CPL), proved he still has it by holding off Mid-Valley’s (MID) Steve Baumann to take the top spot. The Open A division is always exciting to watch and this year was no different. These are the next master players so the games are bound to be good. Many of these guys are well known and can really shoot some stick! 180 guys chalked

A Regional Championships up, all vying for the top spot. The competition was fierce and many a young warrior fell. In the end, eight players made it to the final board. These players put on quite a show to get there, and now they would be truly tested. CPL’s Steve Copher proved he was up to the challenge. Racking up win after win, he took the point. After a first round loss, Leo Violette, from LTD, battled his way back to win the loser’s bracket and a chance at Copher. Both men played well as game after game was played. The first set went to Leo. He played strong enough to win the second match, taking the set and the Open A division win, with Steve Copher taking the second place finish. Leo also wins FREE entry to Men’s Open Singles at the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships in Las Vegas in May. In the Women’s Masters bracket, there were 29 women striving for the title of Women’s Master Champion. This division is full of hot shots and talent. Deliberate and consistent play, not to mention some great shots, put CPL’s Josie LeRoy in the hot seat. Coming from the other side, NPL’s Mary Hopkin was determined and played strong until the end. In a match that pit two great players against each other, Josie proved she was in it to win it, taking the first match, going undefeated and winning the first place money. The Men’s Masters division was a show of consistency and control as table after table fell to the skills of the players. 77 guys entered and only one could take the crown. This year there was a difference. The difference came in the form of a very impressive 16-year-old pool prodigy from CPL’s Classic Billiards in Portland, Chris Byers. He worked his way through the bracket like he belonged there. On the other side was LTD’s Damian Pongpanik, no stranger to strong competition. In their match, Damian proved he was top dog that day by knocking off Chris and taking the point. Chris showed his mettle by winning his next match to get another shot at Damian. In the finals, Damian had to really shoot his best game to take out the persistent Chris, which he did and so became the only other player in the competition to go undefeated. Chris deserves props for battling to a strong second place showing in his first Western BCA tournament. Damian dedicated his hard-fought championship title to his mentor and friend, Rick John (1942-2011), who, he said, was a tremendous influence in his life. Come Friday, it was time to start the team event. OH WAIT!! There was an earthquake in Japan on Thursday night! A tsunami warning was issued for the Oregon coast for Friday morning! Some people were evacuated, some opted to stay. The highway was closed coming into town, so some teams were missing

players. At the allotted time of about 7:15 a.m., the ocean outside of the casino put on a show and suddenly receded about 70 yards. For those who braved the event, it was quite beautiful in an eerie sort of way. Then the “tsunami” hit. Or, was that just a wave? Hard to tell, but either way calamity was avoided. As P.T. Barnum would say, “The show must go on,” and on it went, as did the remainder of the tournament For those players who did not evacuate, Friday was an exciting night as Western BCA put on a show for the spectators, players and the live streaming audience. The Grand Masters Challenge concluded and the winners, Dan Louie of NPL and Linda Carter of Players Club GP were presented with their trophies. (Articles on each of the GMC events will follow.) Western BCA gave a special tribute to retiring treasurer, Joyce Gumm, who was moved to tears by the show of love she received and the custom-made “Pink Ladies” style jacket. Special guest, CSI/BCAPL Media Manager, Holly Ryan was on hand to help out with the moment thousands of players were waiting for: The drawing for the New Diamond Pro Am® Home Pool Table. Holly drew the winning ticket and that lucky winner is Ken Smith of Players Club GP, who also is a new referee in training from Talent, Oregon. After all the excitement died down, the Team event proceeded as scheduled. In the Men’s/Mixed Open Team event, 132 teams competed for the Championship title. INL’s All In Balls Out from Spokane, Washington, showed they were here to play by storming through the winner’s side to take the point. Uncle Jack’s Billiards of LTD went into the loser’s bracket early, but quitting was not part of their vocabulary. Battling through to the final board, and then on to the finals, they proved they were contenders. So as not to be denied the final victory, Uncle Jack’s played like no other and took two matches from All In Balls Out to win the first place honors. The Grand Masters joined various teams in the Men’s/Mixed Masters division to spice things up a bit. Only one designated Grand Master was allowed per team. KC’s Midway, from NPL and Cherry City (CC), made a strong showing by barreling through to the hot seat. Team Hustlin’, from Western Washington and LTD, had other things in mind for the guys from Oregon City, though. Team Hustlin’ had to hang in there on the B side of the brackets after an early loss to CPL’s Q Mungous. Stringing together multiple wins, the guys from Hustlin’

For results go to www.westernbca.org managed to get back to the point match through the backdoor. Hustlin’ right along, they made quick work of KC’s to force another match. With another double dip in the making, the final match starts. KC’s and Team Hustlin’ battled long and hard, but in the end Team Hustlin’ pulled it out for first place. The women of the Masters division put on one heck of a final as well. The Jawbreakers, women from CPL and NPL, played strong on their way to the point victory over the NPL Chix, gals from NPL and INL. Not to be taken lightly, the NPL Chix set their sights on the top spot. Winning the loser’s side and earning a rematch, the Chix chewed up the Jawbreakers in the first set to force a second match. The Chix definitely brought their sticks and showed the Jawbreakers that they could use them on the way to win and a first place finish. The last event to finish was another nail-biter. The Women’s Open Team event pitted CPL’s Chalk-A-Lot from Portland against the Shooting Stars of MID. Shooting Stars had the advantage of being on the point, and having to be beaten twice. That was not going to stop the Chalk-A-Lot women. They came in and won the first set in a tense hill-hill game. Going into the second set, the Chalk-A-Lot girls jumped out in front. The Shooting Stars answered and came back to bring the

match to a hill-hill situation again. Showing off their shooting, the Stars took the hill game and thus the title of Women’s Open Team Champions. Both Open Team Winners will receive FREE entry to BCAPL Nationals in Las Vegas in May, courtesy of CSI/BCAPL. (For more results for all divisions and photo galleries of the event, go to the Western BCA website at www.westernbca.org.) For those players and teams who didn’t finish in the money, Western BCA held 2nd chance tournaments for those divisions with enough players signing up – and sign up they did. Winners of the 2nd Chance tournaments are: WOS-Bonnie Andrews, MOAS-Scott Dzurik and Mike Siplivy (tie), MMS-George Stefurak, MOBS-Nick Oldham, and MMOT-Soundview Bar & Grill/2 Drink Minimum. Championship titles, trophies and prize money were not the only things the players could win at this event. Every player who entered the tournament was also entered into the Giveaway Drawing for prizes donated by Western BCA’s generous local Lincoln City sponsors, Mueller Billiard Products and the vendors at the event. The Grand Prize, a 3-night stay at a Horizon Rentals vacation house, was won by Marla Mortensen of TC. Ashley Inn donated a week-long stay to the giveaway and Bobby Dressel, also of TC, was the lucky winner. NPL’s Dan Rodriguez will be staying at Captain Cook Inn for free at the next tournament. Terry Alverez, from the CC League, won 2 nights at Lincoln City Inn and the Motel 6 winner is Bonnie Brown of NPL. Other gift certificates were donated by Maxwells, Mulligans, Mo’s and Galucci’s, local restaurants always happy to support the pool players and sponsor the event. Chinook Winds, in addition to adding money to the event payouts, did a drawing from the players’ Winners’ Circle Card numbers for instant cash and those winners are: 1st$250-Charles Burnett, 2nd-$150-Madalina Moreno and 3rd-$100-Eunice Sleight. Western BCA wishes to thank all of the sponsors who help make this tournament one of the best events in the country. The Western BCA 2011 8-Ball Championships was a very successful tournament, with the most players ever, coming from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Canada. Prizes were won, checks were cashed, dreams of victory came true, and a good time was had by all who attended. New leagues are forming for the 2011-2012 year, and new players are joining. Where will you be during the week of October 11 - 16, 2011? Hope to see you at Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City for the 2011 9-Ball Championships! Partners 8-Ball On Saturday and Sunday, March 19-20, 2011, American Legion Post #129 in Oak Harbor, WA, hosted its annual Partners 8-Ball Tournament. 16 teams played for $2,440 in prize money, awarded to 4 places. Free, secure Wi-Fi was once again provided, and we will work to provide this service in all future tournaments. Our tournament was played on 4 - 4x8 tables, all located at the American Legion Hall. Because only 16 teams showed up, the American Legion only added $200 to the prize fund. However, $20 greens fees were charged to each of 16 teams, amounting to $320, also added entirely back to the prize fund. Thus, a total of $520 was added to the prize money 2nd - Jim Davenport, Dana Aldridge this year. After Tacoma’s “big year” last year, it looks like things are beginning to shift back toward the North. 1st Place was captured by Miguel Morfin and Cody Clark of the Everett area, while Jim Davenport and Dana Aldridge of the Sedro-Woolley area hung on for 2nd Place. 3rd Place went to LT and Don Wirtamin of the Tacoma area, and

the tournament rounded out with 4th Place going to John Te and Treon Phan of the Lynnwood area. Our gratitude goes to Chuck Hassler, who organized the tournament, and to the staff at the American Legion, most of which consisted of volunteers, for its wonderful support. And finally, our sincerest gratitude goes out to all of the players who took the time out of otherwise busy lives to come and visit our fair village. On Saturday, February 27, Rodder’s & KC’s Midway was totally buzzing as 147 regionally qualified individuals competed in the 2011 Oregon-APA Singles 8 & 9-Ball Regionals. The 9-Ball part of the competition took place on Sunday the 28th. Each participant earned their spot in this tournament by winning a slot in a singles qualifier which ran from June 16 through November 30, 2010. Players were members of OPAL-APA which is franchised and operated in the Portland / Vancouver region by Merle and Boomer Humphreys. In 8-Ball they, had the Skill Level’s two through five competing, and for 9-Ball they had Skill Levels 1 through 5--both at Rodders in Oregon City. Whereas MYPLAYERS, which is operated by Randee Lee in the five counties surrounding the Salem area had the 8-Ball Skill Levels 6 & 7’s and the 9-Ball Skill Level’s 6 through 9 just a couple of miles down the road at KC’s Midway. After check-in and a player’s meeting at each location the competition got underway. Format was modified-single elimination. For 8-Ball the competitors were split into 4 color coded skill level brackets, with each bracket qualifying at least one player to advance to the National Singles Championships. The BLUE TIER bracket consisted of 12 players of either Skill Level 2, or 3. In the finals it Was all OPAL-APA and Jason Alexander of Tigard ended up victorious over Steven Leckie of Portland. In the YELLOW TIER SL-4 bracket there were 21 competitors. In the finals it was Matthew Pittman of Tigard who emerged Victorious over James Andrews of North Plains.

There were two RED TIER SL-5 Brackets. In the first one there were 14 competitors. In the finals it was Kevin Jones of Gladstone, who overturned the teacup over Joseph Bremer of Tigard. Moving on to the second RED TIER bracket there were also 14 Gladiators in the arena. Charioting their way into the final turn were Blake Fierro of Portland and Wayne Johnson of Salem. The both fought valiantly, but Wayne got a

flat tire and Blake seized the advantage and crossed the finish line first to snarf the victory. There were two PURPLE TIER SL-6 & 7 Brackets. In the lower bracket of the two, 14 soldiers readied their bayonets for the charge. When all the smoke cleared still standing were Tyson Bickle and Jeremy Anderson both Portland rivals. Jeremy wasted neither time nor words. He took out Tyson 5-Zip to claim the Victory. Meanwhile, in the upper PURPLE TIER Bracket there were 13 predatory lions just leisurely and patiently awaiting their chance to pounce and rip out the heart of an unsuspecting opponent. Slashing their way to the finals undefeated were Biviano Jimenez and Steve Lingelbach—both from Portland. What turned out to be six game match lasted exactly 9 innings! Steve Lingelbach claimed the victory with a 5-1 win. In the 9-Ball Segment there were three tiers—Green, White, and Purple. In the SL 1, 2, & 3 Green Tier there were 15 hopefuls competing. In the Finals after coming through the one-loss side was Portland’s SL-3 Sarah Pearson who grabbed the candy away from the then undefeated SL-3 Mable Lee of Gresham 25-20. There were two White Tier SL-4 & 5 brackets. The lower bracket contained 15 players. Coming through the one-loss side to the race to 31 / 38 Finals was SL-4 Viana Valdez from Salem. Her opponent SL-5 Mark Binkley also from Salem was undefeated and stayed that way by shattering Viana’s hopes--- 22 to 38. Meanwhile in the 16 person upper White Tier bracket SL-6 Daniel Luke from Portland and SL-5 Nick Whited from Hillsboro both took the

long road before coming to the 46 / 38 pointrace finals, but in the end it was Daniel Luke convincingly getting the plane ticket to Vegas 46-19. Down at KC’s Midway we had two Purple Tier SL- 6-9 brackets. In the lower bracket there was a field of 12. In the 55 / 46 finals it was SL-7 TJ Wiedmaier from Happy Valley closing the book on SL-6 Page Burch from Vancouver 55-21. In the upper Skill Level Purple Tier SL-7 Tyson Okazaki from Beaverton took the long road to the 55 / 75 finals whereas SL-9 Steve Lingelbach from Portland leisurely strolled his merry way to the finish line undefeated. The final score was Lingelbach 75 and Okazaki 34. All the tier winners from both 8 & 9-Ball will be going on a plane ride in April to compete in the APA National Singles Championship held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas April 28 – 30 2011. Each champion will receive travel allowance, double occupancy room, a commemorative Jacket, and $100 in cash upon registration in Las Vegas. We wish them all the best of luck.

Mitchell Henderson Reigns Triumphant Sam’s First Sunday 14.1 Tournament attracted a dozen amateurs of the sport. That is amateur in the original sense of ‘lover’ of the queen of pool games, straight pool. The round robin qualifier narrowed the field to a final four for the $$ elimination bracket play. Paul Marquez shot super, allowing only 79 points in four games, and went undefeated up until the final match. Mitchell Henderson came in at the last minute and lost his first game of the round robin, but then found his stroke and went undefeated all the way to the money. 1st - $70 - Mitchell Henderson 2nd - $55 - Paul Marquez 3rd - $35 - Paul Lemar 4th - $20 - Mike Hutchison High run prize - $10 - Paul Marquez (30)

hit the cue ball below center so it arrives at the 15 ball without follow or draw. Then the cue ball will simply bounce off the cushion more or less straight to the 6 ball. An alternative is to let the cue ball roll with follow and correct the angle off the cushion by adding a little left English. The two effects will fight against each other and the result can be the path you want depending on how much side spin you have added. This technique of cancellation is useful when you don’t want the follow to bend the ball forward but if you hit the ball hard enough to keep its draw it will also have too much speed. Try both ways and see which works best for you. As you move on to the 7 and 8, you will need to use both draw and left English at some point and by the time you are sending the cue ball to the 11, you will need your best side and draw simultaneously. Table conditions can have a large effect on how both draw and side spin work. With sticky cloth, any draw will quickly turn into follow but the side spin will generally take more, especially if you are at maximum RPMs. With slippery cloth, the spin may not take completely on the cushion, but draw shots will be

Honorable mention to Vinny Mellott for his lovely 2-inning (29 + 21) out against Buzz. The old Buddhist aphorism says, “Abandon all hope of perfection”, and that certainly goes for the game of Straight Pool. easier. If possible, try this drill on a variety of tables -- you could use it as a warmup in competitions. In the lower part of the diagram the cue ball has been moved to a harder cut shot. This will make it difficult or impossible to reach the spots nearest the corner pockets. Can you achieve the cue ball angles indicated? Experiment with your mixture of draw/follow/side to see which combination makes each shot easiest. Remember to shoot the shot in the other direction also, or you’ll get lopsided. bucks to the Monk down at the pool room. I told him “The Lion Slayer” Kings Santy beat Alex Pagulayan and had progressed into a pretty good player. I think I’ll have to drive Lucky to Boise sometime so he can play him some. I mentioned Phil Boucher from Montana as the gentleman of the tournament. Sure enough, Lucky said he knew Phil’s brother and played him at Four Bears in North Dakota. Speaking of action – outside of Lucky beating that kid from the east coast (last issue), during the week-long event, there usually is a ton of action in the practice room, but for some reason, not this year. Lucky was “flabbergasted,” as he called it, by the lack of action and lack of stake horses. He said he saw only a few 5/20 dollar games, “Hardly enough to spit at,” he said. But, he said, the local pool room had drawn most of the action – how he knew that I didn’t even ask. Said Boy George was stiffing everyone who didn’t know better and rumor had it that after a visit from a couple of guys to give him a “tune up,” Boy George paid off. So anyway, Lucky had marked Warren Kiamco, the all-around winner, to play him after the tournament. I was with him when he corralled him and his road buddy during 9-ball and asked him if he wanted to play. Warren and his Filipino buddy had a short discussion in Tagalog and then Warren said, “Ok! Play for $500 a set.” Lucky later told me they were saying they should be able to get about five or six sets out of him before he gave up. (He never fails to surprise me.) Lucky, of course, shoving his old hands into his worn pants pockets, said, “Well, I reckon that’ll be ok, but I just want to play you. You’re a mighty fine player.” Warren looked at his road partner and laughed. “Ok, we will play,” he said. So Lucky thought he had a second bit of action to look forward to at the end of the tournament. It turned out he hunted for Warren after 8-ball finals, but came up empty. Kiamco had disappeared without a word. Maybe he thought the old man Lucky couldn’t possibly be serious. Or, maybe Warren didn’t have the money to play. Lucky said, whatever, it happens… but he just might show up one day where Warren plays to see if he’d still like to knock balls around. We threw all our junk in the trunk and left Reno the next morning. It was 9 degrees. That would be c-c-cold. Next month: I brought Lucky back to Oregon, since I was headed over to the biggest amateur regional event in the country right after the Reno event. Lucky thought he’d like to take a look at some of the Northwest players and see who was coming out of that bunch. On the drive up, we munched on chili relleno casserole we got to go from the Pneumatic Diner. Good stuff. I got him an adjoining room at Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City where the Western BCA event is held twice a year, and we turned in for a good night’s sleep before the action began the next day.

The Break - April 2011

The NWPA’s 2011 season kicked off March 19-20th at Askar’s Golden Fleece in Kenmore, WA. Tournament play was completed on 9 9 foot Diamond tables with Simonis cloth and in addition to the $500 added for the prize fund, Askar also added the $500 entry fee to make the event a qualifier for the WPBA’s US Open. Rail2Rail Productions provided Live Streaming of the event all weekend long and newly crowned Open A 8 Ball Champion Leo Violette joined the gang in the commentator’s booth. One of the goals set for each of the ladies by the tour was to bring in some new blood. Shelby fulfilled her annual quota by bringing new player Cathy Duenas to join in the action. Jana also brought her cousin Heather Moonias to play as well. Twenty-eight ladies from British Columbia, Alberta, Washington, and Oregon started play on Saturday morning, including former NWPA stars Kim Jones and Mona Remedios. Even with the smaller field, tough competition lasted throughout the weekend, including 5 hill-hill matches and 5 matches that went 7-5. Eight ladies returned on Sunday to resume play including: Andrea Saenz Maes vs Kim Jones and Shari Ross vs. Liz Cole on the a side, and Jana Montour vs. Mona Remedios and Mary Hopkin vs. Kimberly Kirk on the b side. Kim and and Liz both advanced through their morning matches 7-4 and 7-2 respectively to square off for the hot seat, which Liz won7-4. Jana and Mary also won their morning matches 7-2 and 7-1 to advance. Jana continued her strong play by then defeating Shari 7-2, while Mary fell to Andrea 7-5. On Saturday, Andrea had defeated Jana in a hill-hill nail biter but their Sunday rematch would not be as close. Jana defeated Andrea 7-4. In the b side final, Kim and Jana squared off to see who would earn their shot at the first final of the 2011 NWPA season. As Kim appeared to be running out the final rack with both players tied at 6, she came up short on her 9 ball position to the corner. Shooting off the rail, Kim missed the cut and left Jana a fairly manageable cut in the corner. Jana took her time, but then missed as well, leaving a nearly 90 degree cut along the rail. Kim eyed the shot with conviction, stepped to the table, and then leaned into her approach. Kim ran the ball along the rail, ending Jana’s hopes of repeating her 2010 performance at our first stop. Liz Cole path to final: Bye, Tamre (0), Cathy D (4), Shari R (2), Kim J (4) Kim Jones path to the final: Deby W (5), Andy R (5), Sue O (6), loss to Liz 7-4, Jana M (6) The final would be one race to 9, alternating break. Both Liz and Kim were shooting extremely well and ended up exchanging games through 5-5 when a missed 8 ball in the 11th game allowed Liz back to the table to take the lead at 6-5. Liz was able to increase her lead when Kim jawed the 9 ball. Both players then exchanged games to 8-7. Early in rack 16,

a missed 1-9 combination by Kim was followed by multiple safeties both on each other and on themselves. In this final rack, both players were playing pretty conservatively; however, a missed 5 ball by Kim allowed Liz a pretty straight forward safety. When Kim attempted to cut the ball it, she made it however and then scratched. Liz ran out the last four balls to earn her first ever Qualifier to a WPBA event Tournament Payouts 1st Liz Cole (pictured above) $425 + $500 Entry for US Open 2nd Kim Jones $275 3rd Jana Montour $180 4th Andrea Saenz Maes $140 5/6 Mary Hopkin/Shari Ross $84 7/8 Kimberly Kirk/Mona Remedios $64 Nine ladies showed up for the $100 added 2nd Chance tournament on Sunday. With a race to 3 on the winner’s side and a race to 2 on the loser’s, play wrapped up prior to completion of the main event. Shelby Locati dominated the field and did not lose a match. 2nd Chance Payouts 1st Shelby Locati $60 2nd Heather Moonias $50 3rd Alisha Rogers $40 4th Cathy Duenas $30

racks until Souquet played a combination on the 10 ball to pull ahead at 8-7, winning 10-7. This would give Saez and Van Boening a chance for a rematch. Saez and Van Boening captivated fans for another hill-hill saga. Saez immediately jumped to a 5-1 lead over Van Boening. Both men appeared confident and missed very few shots. Toward the end of the set, they each hooked themselves toward the end of the rack and couldn’t finish the run allowing the other to capitalize. In the final rack, Van Boening made an error that would cost him when he got poor position on the three ball resulting in a miss on the four ball. This would allow Seaz the opportunity to bank in the four and run out for another chance at Souquet.

Souquet Crowned Pro 10-Ball Champion at Super Billiards Expo

Germany’s Ralf Souquet went undefeated to claim the 2011 Open 10-Ball Pro Players Championship at the Super Billiards Expo. Souquet, who had a fifth place finish in 2009, had his eye on the prize this year. It seemed he had notable wins this weekend over nearly the entire U.S. Mosconi team, Dennis Hatch, Johnny Archer, and Shane Van Boening. The tournament was played using WPA rules where a pocket must be called for each shot. If a ball is slopped in, the incoming player has the option to take the shot or return it to the shooter. Ironically, Souquet helped in implementing the rule. The 2008 and 2010 champion Van Boening fought hard to defend his title but was unable to get through the steady Robb Saez who sent Van Boening to the one-loss on Saturday in a hill-hill back and forth battle. Van Boening went on to defeat Hatch with a convincing score of 10-3 while Saez and Souquet met up on the a-side. Souquet was ahead 4-0 before Saez won the next five games. The players exchanged the next few

In the finals, both Souquet and Saez appeared to be getting fatigued the percentage of errors were increasing. Souquet remained ahead for the entire match and Saez struggled to close the gap. While down 8-7, Saez had an opportunity but was unable to capitalize, missing the one ball and giving the rack to Souquet. Another miss on the one ball would allow Souquet to get to the hill first and ultimately the match and title.
