Tourism in Monroe County

Monroe County, nestled between Knoxville and Chattanooga, is famous for its friendly people, mild climate, unmatched beauty and diverse scenery, and its unique historical sites that help make it a must-see tourism destination. The county includes four incorporated towns, each with its own distinct personality.

Madisonville is the county seat and is the childhood home of the late Sen. Estes Kefauver. The Monroe Courthouse, built in 1892, sits in the middle of downtown and has been named an historic site and landmark. The City of Madisonville and local volunteers raised money to create a Veterans Memorial Park and the large American flag at the park can be seen from miles around as people travel on Highway 411 and Highway 68. Madisonville also is home to Hiwassee College, a four-year United Methodist Church college founded in 1849.

Each summer, Madisonville shows its patriotic side with the annual Parade of Flags from mid June through late July.

Sweetwater is the county’s largest city and is located just off Interstate 75. The historic downtown area has been revitalized in past years and features many antique and gift shops and an art gallery. Just outside Sweetwater, people can explore America’s largest underground lake at The Lost Sea. Each weekend hundreds of people can be found searching for bargains at Sweetwater Flea Market, a large indoor flea market just off I-75 Exit 60.

Sweetwater has a wide variety of events throughout the year, including an Independence Day Celebration,

the National Muscadine Festival at the end of September and A Small Town Christmas the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Vonore is best know for its historical sites and Tellico Lake, a popular attraction for fishermen and boaters.

Historical sites include the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum and Fort Loudoun State Historic Area. The town also is home to the county’s largest industrial parks including several boat manufacturers and a new biofuel refinery.

Tellico Plains is the county’s smallest town but during the weekends is a popular spot for motorcyclists and car club enthusiasts driving the scenic Cherohala Skyway.

The town features several art galleries and antique stores, a book store, the Cherohala Skyway Visitors Center and the Charles Hall Museum. And as the gateway to the Cherokee National Forest and the Skyway, there are miles of trails to explore, cool mountain streams to wade and fish in and picturesque waterfalls.

Coker Creek, an unincorporated community in the southern corner of the county, is home to several art galleries and Buck Bald, which offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains. Each October, Coker Creek hosts the Autumn Gold Festival.

Preparing for the future

Monroe County’s focus on learning Monroe County is served by two outstanding public school systems, the Monroe County School System and the Sweetwater City School System.

The Sweetwater City School System is more than a century old and serves Sweetwater and the 1st District of Monroe County.

Dr. Melanie Miller serves as director of schools. In 2012, the Tennessee Department of Education recognized the Sweetwater City School System as one of only 21 out of 136 school systems in the state that earned exemplary status due to outstanding growth on test scores.

The system’s schools are Sweetwater Primary School (pre-K through 2ndgrade), Sweetwater Elementary (grades 3-4), Brown Intermediate (grades 5-6) and the Sweetwater Junior High (grades 7-8).

The school system has outstanding facilities and constant upgrades and renovations have given it some of the most modern buildings in the state.

The Sweetwater Board of Education governs the school system and

meets on the second Monday of each month. The board is made up of Chairman Richard Rowe, Janie Dacus, Dr. John Fox, Bennie Moser and Letha Oggs. For more information, call the the Central Office a 423- 337-7051. The school system website is www.compurdy.com/scs2/.

The Monroe County School System serves 5,500 students in 13 schools. It is led by Director of Schools Mike Lowry and a voter-elected School Board from three districts: Dewitt Upton, Dr.

Larry Stein, Jerry Snyder, Chairman Dr. Bob Lovingood, Janet Martin, Janie Harrill, Steve Rogers, Sonya Lynn and Joe Cagle. The board meets on the second Thursday of each month.

The school system has constantly upgraded its facilities with remodels in the past few years, including those at Vonore Elementary and Tellico Plains Elementary this year.

The county system is noted for its outstanding use of technology in the classroom and in 2011, Gov. Bill Haslam visited Sweetwater High School to commend that school on its outstanding improvement on test scores and graduation the graduation rate. In February 2013, Tennessee Education Commissioner Tim Huffman visited Sequoyah High School answering questions from teachers in both systems.

In the middle of abundant opportunities

Aiming for higher education Higher education opportunities are abundant in and near Monroe County.

Hiwassee College From its beginning in 1849, Hiwassee College, located in Madisonville in the heart of Monroe County, has been committed to all students seeking a faith-centered education. Originally founded on a Methodist campground, the college quickly expanded and now resides on 400 acres just outside of Madisonville.

Today, Hiwassee is a residential, liberal arts, four-year institution affiliated with the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Hiwassee College is accredited through the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS) and federal student financial aid programs are available for students. A growing equestrian program and a new dental hygiene school are attracting more students to Hiwassee.

Hiwassee doesn’t just open its doors to its students, it also opens doors to

the community by donating the use of its facilities and services to more than 30 area organizations each year.

Cleveland State Community College Cleveland State Community College is an accredited public comprehensive community college committed to quality education and open access.

The college operates within the governance of the Tennessee Board of Regents. Approximately 3,500 credit students and 1,500 non-credit students enroll in classes at the college in a typical fall semester. Ninety-four percent of the faculty hold master’s or doctor’s degrees.

Tennessee Wesleyan College Tennessee Wesleyan College occupies a 40-acre tract of land two blocks north of the Courthouse square in downtown Athens, located within a half-hour’s drive from much of Monroe County.

The size of campus allows students to move easily between classes, administrative offices and services, athletic events and college activities.

The Tennessee Wesleyan College and Fort Sanders School of Nursing, in addition to an evening business program, is housed at the college’s satellite campus in Knoxville. The Knoxville campus is located on Cogdill Road, just off of Pellissippi Parkway. Its facilities provide students with the latest technology and spacious classrooms.

Tennessee Wesleyan College enrolls more than 1,000 students. The student-to-faculty ratio is 15:1.

Health care

A key to vibrant community Sweetwater Hospital Association Sweetwater Hospital Association (SHA) provides the community with a first-class hospital that is the envy of much larger communities. The hospital’s 475 employees are dedicated professionals with some of the best facilities and equipment around.

In recent years, the hospital has opened a new state-of-the-art emergency room, new operating rooms and materials management area.

In the next year, the hospital will complete a new main entrance, imaging center and administrative addition. SHA has new professional office space in future plans and will complete the renovation of buildings.

SHA is a leader in acquiring new medical technology. The hospital recently acquired one of the most advanced CT scanners in the world, the Aquilion PRIME, and was the first hospital east of the Mississippi River to have such an advanced scanner.

Of particular interest to businesses is SHA’s outstanding industrial medicine program that provides companies with drug testing, employee physicals, etc.

Athens Regional Medical Center Athens Regional Medical Center, located at West Madison Avenue, in Athens in nearby McMinn County, provides the area with another first-class health care facility just minutes away from Monroe County.

Chota Community Health In addition to SHA and Blount Memorial, Chota Community Health Services is a non-profit corporation that provides affordable health care to all residents of Monroe County regardless of economic status or insurance coverage. A number of local doctors provide private practice options for patients.

Lifestar In addition to the excellent Monroe County Ambulance Service, a University of Tennessee Lifestar medical helicopter is stationed at Sweetwater’s newest fire hall providing local patients the fastest transport time possible to the Level I Trauma Center at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

Booming Industry

A large percentage of employment in Monroe County is in manufacturing. However, Monroe County is one of the more diverse counties in the state when it comes to the variety of employment opportunities. That diversity has led to job growth recently, nearly cutting the unemployment rate in half in the last four years.

Businesses, both large and small, continue to open and locate in Monroe County, including the new Food City in Vonore in May along with the planned opening of a Walmart Super Center in Sweetwater in September.

The county’s central location on Interstate 75 in East Tennessee means the county is within a short distance of all the major markets in the Eastern half of the United States, making the county a great location for production and distribution facilities.

Monroe County’s industrial parks provide great sites and infrastructure for all types of manufacturing and distribution companies.

In addition to large manufacturers, the largest of which employs nearly 1,000 people, Monroe County has a great business climate for small and family-owned businesses.

Chamber of Commerce Programs Leadership Monroe

Youth Leadership

This nine-month program is designed to educate class enrollees on all services throughout the county.

Each month is spent on a different topic including education, community services, health care, economic development, tourism, government, and criminal justice as well as a trip to Nashville to learn about state government.

This program is offered to high school students entering their junior year and is scheduled for one week in the summer. Each day is spent on a different topic including community services, health care, economic development, tourism, government and criminal justice.

Making it Happen This is a two-week program where the Chamber equips students with the knowledge and skills needed for success. The two-week program ends with a resume evaluation and mock interview.

Junior Ambassador Program Began in the Fall of 2012, in partnership with Hiwassee College.

Tennessee Scholars This a business-led rewards and incentives program.

Diplomat/Ambassador Program Diplomats are the core group of volunteers for the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce. The group meets once a month to discuss and plan Chamber functions including the annual membership/awards banquet, The Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Expo, golf tournament, Taste of Monroe and the fall speaker event. Small Business Partnerships The Monroe County Chamber of Commerce partners with the following three different businesses and industry related programs which help businesses in rural communities.

The TSBDC or Tennessee Small Business Development Center at Cleveland State Community College is a network of professional business consultants. They offer free assistance and counseling to help business owners grow and develop successful businesses. They also have a remote workstation in the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce office in Madisonville.

The USDA Rural Development offers a business and industry guaranteed loan program. The primary pur-

pose of this program is to create and maintain employment and improve the economic and environmental climate in rural communities.

SCORE provides free counseling for start up and ongoing businesses. They offer advice, mentoring and encouragement. SCORE also offers free ongoing support through workshops, online counseling, publications and newsletters.
