Happy New Year! We have all been through a busy holiday season and are well into 2014. There are many events coming up on the Holstein calendar and in particular I want to draw your attention to Ontario Holstein’s Annual General Meeting, which will be held February 25-26th in London. Please refer to page 58 for all of the details. In partnership with the Progressive Dairy Operators and Ontario Holstein a Dairy Management Workshop will be held on February 27 that will be informative for all in attendance. Two young Holstein enthusiasts are featured in this issue. Young Cynthia Bumstead is starting to draw people’s attention with a science project that she has been doing for school, comparing how cows placed at the Bruce-Grey Holstein Show and their eventual classification. Holstein statisticians had better be on the watch out in a few years when Cynthia is looking for a job! Jason Millen, our feature breeder this issue is working his way into his family operation and has been successful with herd management and purchasing some show animals. I encourage you to read about these young Holstein aficionados who we will no doubt be hearing about in the future. Lastly I want to thank all of the breeders and organizations who placed ads in this issue. Your incredible support really makes this magazine what it is. Sincerely,

Julie McIntosh, Interim Link Editor thelink@ontario.holstein.ca

START THE YEAR OFF RIGHT We find ourselves starting another year and we will have new challenges as well as new accomplishments. But to fulfill these accomplishments, goals need to be set. Do you have goals for your farm that can be done in one month, six months, a year, or longer? If you only have goals that would be lifelong goals, then what are you working towards this year? When trying to motivate employees or family members that work on your farm, having them to work towards a goal is always great. And that doesn’t mean “let’s finish milking”! Working towards improving SCC, Pregnancy Rate or Age at First Calving are all great management opportunities that will improve the efficiency of your herd. You may want to ask your employees what they think they would want to work towards as they will put more passion into their work. Once these goals have been met, there is a chance to congratulate and reward your team on reaching them. I wish you all the best in 2014 and all the success with your dairy operation. Our team is available to assist yours in helping you with your success. Sincerely,

Jason French, General Manager branch@ontario.holstein.ca

County Club Spotlight

A

Featuring

Peterborough Holstein Club

By Tara Bullock

A STRONG AND UNITED HOLSTEIN CLUB IS A SOURCE OF PRIDE AND TRADITION FOR MANY HOLSTEIN BREEDERS. At the Ontario Holstein Branch, we work closely with County Holstein Clubs from across the province and get to witness first-hand the dedication and enthusiasm of club executives and members alike. We are pleased to showcase the history and achievements of county clubs across Ontario. Supporting youth has been key to the Holstein Club, even those with “coloured” calves.

2013 Peterborough County Holstein Club Banquet.

1. What is the club’s background and history? The Peterborough Holstein Club was founded in 1929 with the following executive; G.A. Brethen, 1st president; Charlie Moore 1st secretary, R.M. Holtby as fieldman. Activities that first year included a field day at G.A. Brethen’s farm in Norwood and the formation of a heifer club. In 2014, Peterborough Holstein Club will be celebrating our 85th Anniversary. We have had many influential cows and people. Please see the full story on page 42. 2. What has the club accomplished in recent years? Over the years, the Peterborough County Holstein club has managed to continue to provide events, meetings, social gatherings and a Holstein show to our members. Our directors meet once a month to organize each of these events. Our Twilite BBQs have had anywhere from 550-1200 people in attendance over the years. 3. What annual activities does your club organize? Each year we plan and implement a Young Breeder’s meeting with a barn tour, speaker and lunch. In the past, we have had a curling bonspiel, bus trip and sale. We have recently organized a county Breeders Cup to encourage the non-showing sector of the county to get involved. Our banquet is always well attended with 100 members. We continue to promote our county cattle and welcome our neighbouring breeders through our Holstein show which has had entries of 100-145 head. Our Twilite BBQ is always a success. We finish off the year with our car tour and annual meeting which often has 80-100 breeders in attendance. Not too bad for a county with around 40 milk producers left! 4. What advice would you give to other clubs wanting to grow their membership and become more active? Make sure you find, recruit and train the best volunteers you can get. Work with them and mentor the younger ones. Find the right job for the right person. Thank everyone always, appreciation is never shown enough. Be enthusiastic and have fun. Start small and work up, celebrate even your small successes.

8

the

Link Winter 2014

Crovalley Holsteins won both the Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners at the 2013 county show.

5. Where do you see the club in a few years down the road? We see our club, like many others within the province working more in partnership with each other and our local milk committees to promote the breed, educate breeders and provide social activities to our members. With fewer breeders in each county, it will be important to realize that change is inevitable and in order to remain relevant and successful it will be necessary to embrace the changes as they come. 6. How do you support youth in your club? Each year our club supports our young members through a variety of ways. We provide financial support through donating to the Jr. Show in Orono, by sponsoring our judging teams, EastGen Challenge team and TD Classic team. We provide two scholarships each year. All new members receive a new show halter which is presented at the Twilite BBQ. A True Type model cow is purchased and donated at the 4-H awards banquet. We also donate $20 to each dairy 4-H member each year to help cover their 4-H fees. 7. How do you communicate with your members? We use quarterly newsletters, email, and our Facebook page. www.ontario.holstein.ca

York County Time Capsule Submitted by Sandy O’Hara

The Ontario Holstein Branch and Holstein Canada donated this year’s rose garland to the Grand Champion of the Holstein show at the Royal. In the photo with the garland before it was presented to Robrook Goldwyn Cameron are Hank Hazeleger Ontario Holstein board member, Kris MacLeod, Eastern District representative, El Petherick, President of the Ontario Holstein Board, Angela Howard, Western District representative, Jason French, General Manager of Ontario Holstein and Adrian Vander Wielen, East-Central District representative.

The York Region Holstein Club brought their centennial celebrations to an end on Thursday December 12th, 2013 at their Annual Meeting held at the Markham Agricultural Society boardroom. With approximately 40 people present, President Paul Hulshof brought the year to a close by handing over a Time Capsule to National Director of Holstein Canada, John Buckley. Throughout the club’s 100th anniversary year, memorabilia was collected from the past and present. The time capsule which is a cream can holds interesting facts on the dairy industry not only in York Region but nationwide. Dick Munro who is a past producer in York Region and a real Holstein enthusiast had made up several display boards of York’s history. He donated all of it to the cause. A PowerPoint presentation containing over 250 pictures of our centennial celebrations made up by Bart Johnson of Belridge Holsteins of Sutton will also join the collection. The time capsule will be delivered to Holstein Canada’s head office in the New Year for safe keeping. It will now join the club’s three originals books dating back to June of 1913 containing the original minutes of the very first meeting and more. These books were delivered to Holstein Canada in the fall of 2012 where they sit in their archive department. The club has left instructions on the can for it to be opened in 50 years. A wonderful way to finish off a fantastic year of centennial celebrations!

Christmastime Fundraiser Webb View Holsteins got creative while decorating a Christmas tree in their barn this past Christmas.

As a fundraiser at their Christmas party, Prescott County Holstein Club directors decorated gingerbread houses that were auctioned off. Above, Norm Simard checks to make sure his house is level and a sample of another house that was auctioned off.

Millen Farms Changing of the guard at

A

At Millen Farms near Omemee, a team approach is used to get the work done, but Jason Millen, 26 has taken a keen interest in the farm as well as the show ring and will be the next generation to run the farm. Millen Farms goes back to the early 1930s when Jason’s grandparents, Harold and Grace Millen, purchased the original farm and worked hard shipping milk before the milk board came into existence. Then Jason’s parents, Ron and Cathy took over the farm and run it today with Jason working his way in. The team approach works well at Millen farms with Jason looking after the cows and much of the milking, Ron, who completed his doctorate in economics prior to coming home to farm, does the bookwork and finances, Cathy does a lot of the milking and running around and valued long-time employee of 22 years, Hartmut Naumann looks after the fieldwork and feeding. Some part-time help is hired for milking and extra field work. Ron and Cathy also have another son David, who is an electrical engineer and lives in town with his wife Sara, son Jackson and new daughter Emmalyne. Millen Farms consists of 1,300 acres with 900 workable. They milk about 110 cows two times a day with a double 12 DeLaval parallel parlour in a new free-stall barn that was built six years ago with the idea that Jason would join the farm. Before the new barn, the family had been milking 100 cows in a 50 cow tie-stall barn, which meant swinging 50 cows in and out each milking. The old tie-stall barn was converted to house calves and the old free-stall where the swing cows were housed, is now the home for dry cows. Older heifers are kept at another barn down the road. The new parlour has made milking much more efficient and will save people’s knees. The new free-stall has helped with management and production in the herd. They installed the Afi system which is helpful to pick out heats. Cow comfort is also better with the use of rubber mats and straw for bedding. Ration balancing has also improved. Millen Farms is one of the highest production farms in Victoria County. Last year, they had the top BCA with 249-249-247, top management score and top producing cow in the in the county.

The dry cow facilities at Millen Farms.

When it came time to building the new barn, everyone was involved in the design. They went on a lot of tours and while Jason was studying at Kemptville College, he visited a lot of barns. Jason has been interested in the farm from day one. “I participated in 4-H and really enjoyed showing. For the first four or five years, I showed our own animals,” says Jason. “In the later years I started getting heifers from Tomalynn where I really learned how to work with show animals, helping them at shows.” He continued his agriculture training attending University of GuelphKemptville College, completing his Diploma in Agriculture, followed by his degree at the University of Guelph. While at Guelph, he met Morgon McMillan of Kingsway Farms who helped further Jason’s interest in showing. Jason, with his own money purchased his first heifer, Royalcrest Dundee Barcelona VG-85 through Morgon and Ethan McMillan. Ever since their time at Guelph, Jason and Morgon have been friends and purchased several cattle together. Jason has worked at shows for Kingsway as well as Gerald Coughlin of Trent Valley, Tomalynn, Cherry Crest and Knonaudale. Jason has a keen eye when it comes to purchasing show cattle. He purchased River Dale Mr Sam Ella VG-86-2Yr with Kingsway Farms and Hazbro Holsteins of Embro. In 2013, she was the 1st Senior Two-Year-Old and Honourable Mention Grand Champion at the Peterborough Exhibition and was 3rd at the Ontario Summer Show.

Morsan Gold Terror VG-86, owned with Kingsway, was 1st Senior Two-Year-Old and Honourable Mention Grand Champion at the Lindsay Exhibition in 2013. Another exciting cow Jason is partners in with Kingsway, Shockwave and Dave Renaud of Nepean is Kingsway Goldwyn Abrakazoo VG-88-2yr. She was purchased by the group at the Influence of Allie Sale in the summer of 2011. She was 3rd Intermediate Calf at the Royal, Reserve All Ontario Intermediate Calf and 4-H Calf as well as All Canadian 4-H in 2009. She continued to dominate taking the 2nd place Intermediate Yearling prize at the Royal in 2010 and placed 2nd in the Two-Year Old class at the Spring Discovery in 2011.

Delcreek Naughty By Night VG-85 is another favourite investment and is owned with Matthew and Tyler Yates and Aleah Farms both of Beaverton. Naughty By Night has proven herself in the showring. She was 2nd Intermediate calf at World Dairy Expo and went on to be Reserve All American in 2011. She was also 1st Intermediate calf at the Spring Discovery and Ontario Summer Show and was named Honourable Mention All Canadian Intermediate Calf in 2011. In 2012, Naughty By Night was 1st Intermediate Yearling at the Lindsay Exhibition. The partners have two heifers by Goldwyn and Gold Chip from Naughty By Night that they look forward to seeing develop.

Herd favourite Millen Lomax Rosie EX-93.

“It’s nice to see the investment turn out on some of these cows. We have been flushing some of them and had great success,” says Jason. When asked what Jason is most proud at the home farm, he quickly mentions Millen Lomax Rosie who classified EX-93 in 2013. “It is neat to have a 93 point cow in a free-stall barn. She has an attitude and knows she is important,” says Jason. “We have flushed her and have calves on the ground.”

Kingsway Goldwyn Abrakazoo VG-88-2Yr, from the heart of the Allie family.

Millen Farms is currently going through succession planning. They formed a corporation which makes succession easier. Ron says that they just talk shares and not dollars. The family has attended a lot of informative meetings put on by Farm Credit Canada and the Royal Bank that have been really helpful in the process. Jason’s goal for the future of the Millen herd as well as his show investments is to continually improve the genetics. “I want to keep going the way we are going, improving the genetics every day,” he says. “Six years ago I won a Holstein Canada scholarship and a goal I stated was to breed an Excellent cow. We now have six in the barn. The goal now would be a Master Breeder, but that will take a lot of time and patience.” The current classification at Millen Farms is 3 ME, 3 EX, 35 VG, 68 GP and 22 G and Millens have a whole binder of Long Time and Superior Production certificates. The breeding focus has changed slightly from the tie-stall barn where the cows were very large. Big cows don’t always last in the free-stall barn and can be too big for the parlour. Their ideal cow is balanced with a great udder and feet and legs that milks well and re-breeds quickly who will last in a free-stall barn. Jason studies pedigrees before breeding, trying to balance out what the cow needs to improve.

Delcreek Naughty by Night now VG-85 will be a foundation for the future.

The sires that Millens currently use are Doorman, Lauthority, Fever, Windbrook, Uno and Brawler to name a few. They had used a lot of Lauthority and those heifers are calving out nicely as well as heifers by Fever and Steady. In the future, Jason would like to have all of the cattle at one location and possibly increase the number of cows they are milking depending on the quota situation. The farm will also continue to purchase land as it makes sense. Cathy is planning on travelling to Ireland this coming summer and Ron would like to slow down from committees and local politics.

Royalcrest Dundee Barcelona now VG-85 was Jason’s first purchase.

The future looks bright as Jason works his way into Millen Farms with succession planning and goals set in place. For other young people looking to become involved in a farm and show cattle Jason’s advice is get out and look at cows, study pedigrees and see what you like. This will help you in all aspects of farming.

Memories of 85 Years of Holsteins in the 2.

3.

By Julie McIntosh

T

The Peterborough Holstein Club will celebrate 85 years in 2014 with a vast history of accomplished and dedicated Holstein breeders. The storied history of the county’s Holstein club has been created by a relatively small group of breeders (currently about 40) that have achieved many great milestones.

Astro Sherry EX 96-USA who was Reserve Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo in 1998, after being All Canadian and All American Mature cow in 1996 for Pamtom Farms of New York, USA. Ronbeth Starbuck Missy VG- 89, who was purchased as an embryo from Ronbeth Holsteins by Roger Holtby of Holtbyholme Holsteins, was the first animal ever to be named All Canadian and The club was first founded in 1929, with the following executive, All American, three consecutive years in a row, as a calf, yearling G.A. Brethen was named president, Charlie Moore secretary and and 2 year old, in 1991, 1992 and 1993. R.M. Holtby as fieldman. The initial executive and those that followed aimed to improve the Holstein breed in the county as well In 1943, another cow in Peterborough created some news. Honour as provide camaraderie for breeders and their families. In the early List Leader, Snowflake Alcartra Tensen VG owned by G.J. Elmhurst days, judging demonstrations, field days, and banquets were held. of Birdsall was the first cow in the county to be bred artificially. Showing has played a big role in the life of Peterborough County breeders. The first Peterborough Black and White Show was held at Lakefield in 1939. It moved to Peterborough in 1958 and breeders’ animals were shown in the Peterborough Memorial Centre. In the 1970s they moved to a separate show pavilion which burned in 1984 and a new building was built to house cattle and show in by 1985 where the show is held today. Currently, there are about 110 animals exhibited at the show, down from the 200 in the early days.

The East Central Championship Show used to be held in Peterborough at the Memorial Centre on the ice surface until the late 1990s when it moved and became known as the Ontario Summer Show. Colleen Terpstra, the club secretary from 1986 to 2001 remembers the show well. “The arena staff would place plywood and sawdust over the ice and we decorated the sides of the boards up like the Royal and the ladies prepared all of the food,” says Colleen.

Many notable show cows have been bred or developed in Peterborough County. Cathland Countess EX, bred by Neal Cathcart of Cavan was sold to Hanover Hill Holsteins and was Grand Champion at the Royal in 1979 and was All Canadian in 1979, and 1983. Cathland Lilac VG-89-5YR-CAN,EX-97-USA, also bred by Neal Cathcart was Grand Champion at the World Dairy Expo in 1988 for her owners including Peterborough’s Gerald Coughlin Jr. Crovalley Holsteins developed Mawacres Warden Patricia EX-3E who was the first ever milking female to be Junior Champion at the Royal. She was then sold to Albert Cormier and continued to have an illustrious show career. Rossland Astro Kat EX-2E-USA bred by Keith and Murray Ross in Norwood brought the county pride by winning Grand and Supreme Champion at the World Dairy Expo in 1991. Embrdale Emily Charles EX-4E was a popular show cow in the 1990s bred in Peterborough and was Honourable Mention Grand at the Royal in 1998. J. Francis Crowley bred Taraley

Food and the camaraderie that comes with sharing a meal are common factors of the ever popular Peterborough County Twilight Meetings, held annually since 1948, regularly drawing about 1,000 people. In the early days, the women of the county made all of the salads, jellied, macaroni and carrot. Colleen remembers early on Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) was served along with the salads. When KFC refused to serve milk in their restaurants, the club moved to the current BBQ beef. “Even now with about 40 breeders, about 1,000 people are annually hosted. The event helps connect the farmers with people from cities,” says Colleen. The 2014 Twilight Meeting will be held at Ronbeth Holsteins. The Warner family are celebrating their 75th year breeding Holsteins. Dean Warner of Ronbeth recalls always trying to have entertainment at the events, everything from “Farmer Olympics” to skits, to having Willie Nelson (John French) and Reba McIntyre

(Dean Warner) perform. There were two sales that ran for a number of years organized by the club. First the Kawartha Klassic Sale started in 1975 and was organized with Clarence Glenn as chairman and Lloyd Wilson as the auctioneer. It was a big fundraiser for the club. In 1977, the Kalf Kingdom Sale started, sponsored by the club with Ed McMorrow as the auctioneer. “A lot of high quality and high priced animals went through the sales over the years. The county also produced many great animals that were sold across Canada and the world,” says former county sales agent Frank McMahon. Frank tells of an early story in the 1910s when his grandfather Jack McMahon purchased a bull, Pontiac Dekol Keyes, he jokes became the first “on-the-road” technician. Jack broke the bull to drive his cutter, and would drive the bull farm to farm, unhooking him to breed the farmer’s cows, hook him up again and continue to the next farm. Frank remembers seeing the pedigree once that described the bull’s marking, not a picture.

Memories of Lifloc Holsteins

F

By Sheila McConkey as told to Angela Prins and Margaret Murray with contributions from Peter McConkey.

From her vantage point of eighty plus years, Sheila Donnelly McConkey recalls many significant events and exceptional people which contributed to building a vibrant Holstein community in the Peterborough area. Some of her earlier memories revolve around her father-in-law, Norman W. McConkey. Norman W. McConkey was born May 5, 1903 near Selwyn, (Lakefield, Ontario), in Smith Township, Peterborough County. An elderly neighbour of Norman’s, Clark Garbutt, who had no sons of his own, recognized in the eleven year old boy, an ambitious

spirit. Mr. Garbutt thought that this lad could go places with a bit of help so he gave Norman a small number of Hampshire sheep. They “showed” the sheep together in the agricultural competition at the 1914 Fall Fair in Norwood and won first prize. This was Norm’s first taste of exhibiting farm animals. He never lost his love of “showing” his stock at local exhibitions and fairs. When he was twenty he went to Raymondale Farms in Ste. Anne-de-Bellevue, near Montreal, to improve his knowledge of breeding and raising good dairy cattle. Later he returned to Peterborough to

become herdsman for Monsignor McColl, the parish priest of the Immaculate Conception Parish. He was also a farmer at heart who maintained a herd of milking Holstein cattle in a shed at the House of Providence, just behind his parish rectory. Monsignor kept this herd to supply milk to both St. Joseph’s Hospital and to the Senior Citizen’s Home. Later on Monsignor McColl was transferred to Lindsay and he had to sell off his herd of Holsteins. Norman was very interested in acquiring this herd so he asked his boss if he could buy them. This purchasing decision was the beginning of Norman’s involvement with Holstein cattle. By the 1930s, after he had married Almeara Feeley, he became interested in 80 acres of property on Canal Rd., (Ashburnham Dr.), east of the Peterborough Lift Locks. The plan was to have a cemetery on this parish property but the land was low lying. Norman decided to ask the Catholic church officials if he could purchase the property. He had acquired his first herd of cattle, inherited the Monsignor’s shed and bought himself valuable farm property over a short period of time. Sheila remembered Norman and Almeara lending support and sharing advice with other farm families in the area. They strongly encouraged other dairy farmers to consider breeding purebred Holstein cows rather than keeping only grades. Two world-record purebred Holstein cows were bred by Norman McConkey at Lifloc Dairy Farms; Lifloc Mata Hari Supreme VG achieved a world record in annual butter fat production (903 lbs of butter fat) in 1947-46. Three years later, Lifloc Macaber Re-Echo produced a world record in milk production of 41,000 lbs of milk. Norman sold a valuable bull to Venezuela in the 1940s for $7, 000. His cattle were featured on the cover of the Holstein Journal in the 1940s. In 1948 Norman and Almeara hosted the first annual Twilight Meeting for Peterborough County on the front lawn of the McConkey farm on Canal Rd.

investment for an Ontario farmer with an additional $1,400 in exchange on the lower Canadian dollar. At the age of 8 months, Pabst Robar Belmont Eyebright arrived at Lifloc Dairy Farms, amid a flurry of local press coverage as no Peterborough farmer had ever paid a sum of that size for a Holstein animal before. Eyebright was installed in a special stall built for him. All went well for a few months until one fateful morning in September 1950, when Norman went down to begin milking the cattle at 6 a.m. He walked into the barn and was greeted by Eyebright staggering in circles around his pen, his tongue hanging out, and his eyes rolled back and bellowing at the top of his lungs. Norm rushed up to the house and shouted to his wife, “Almeara, phone the vet. The new bull is sick.” Almeara, Norm and the kids ran to the barn to witness what Eyebright was doing. Almeara was in tears, as were most of the kids and Norm was speechless, watching his $11,400 purchase on what he thought were his last legs. Dr. Harry Hamilton rushed into the bull’s pen, took one look at the staggering animal and announced, “Norm, your bull is not sick. Your bull is drunk!” Every colourful word in Norm’s repertoire came out. “Harry do you mean, my #!@%XX bull is drunk?” Harry simply repeated in his quiet manner, “Norm, your bull is drunk!” The explanation of the bull’s inebriated state was quite simple. Eyebright’s stall was right next to the corn silo. The day before, the silo, which was made of wood, had been filled with corn silage. All the juice from the corn silage had seeped into Eyebright’s stall and the bull had drunk his fill of the sweet liquor from the corn. Norm was greatly relieved, although he had to endure every farmer in the area talking about Norm McConkey’s alcoholic bull.

Once over his one and only corn-liquor binge, Pabst Robar Belmont Eyebright eventually proved himself to be a superb herd sire. Within a few short years, his offspring were being sold for very generous sums and Norm more than recovered his original purchase from Fred Pabst. When Norm McConkey died in 1956, Almeara donated the bull to the Augustinian Monastery farm at Marylake, north of One of the more amusing McConkey family stories which emerged Toronto where he sired further offspring for several more years. from life at Lifloc Dairy Farms involved Norman’s Holstein herd sire. Holstein Youth

Is there a connection between show placings and classification?

BY CELESTE COOK

AT THE YOUNG AGE OF THIRTEEN, CYNTHIA BUMSTEAD OF GREY COUNTY HAS CAPTURED PEOPLE’S ATTENTION WITH AN IMPRESSIVE SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT THAT SHE PRESENTED TO THE WIARTON 4-H DAIRY CLUB.

The Science Project Cynthia had a science fair project to complete for her class at Derby Public School. Interested in showing and cows, she chose to gather all of the placings in the heifer classes from the Bruce-Grey County Show in Walkerton from 2000 to 2005 and then followed them to see how they classified as milking cows.

followed through with this information for calves that placed second to eleventh place in each respective classes. “There were no heifers that placed first that classified Good as a cow, which is a good thing,” Cynthia points out.

Cynthia ensured she gathered placings from 2000 to 2005, to allow cows to have the ability to be classified Excellent. From 2000 to 2005, 548 heifers walked into the show ring at the Bruce-Grey County Show and Cynthia looked up every single heifer to record how they were classified as a cow and compared their classification to how they placed at the show. She then compiled her results from her findings into many graphs and charts. She hypothesized that 75 per cent of the heifers that were shown would classify Very Good or Excellent by the third lactation. Her final results showed that 46 per cent of the heifers researched classified Very Good or Excellent. Of the heifers that placed at the Bruce-Grey County Show, 19 per cent had no information or were never classified, the majority of them were sold to the United States. Cynthia also analyzed how the heifers’ placings reflected their classification. She discovered that 19 per cent of the cows that placed first at the Bruce-Grey Show in their respective classes classified Excellent as cows, 40 per cent classified Very Good, 31 per cent classified Good Plus and ten per cent had no information. She

50

the

She then divided the calves into their respective classes and determined the percentage of cows that scored Excellent, Very Good, Good Plus and Good in each of the classes. By doing this, she wanted

Cynthia Bumstead is a true farm girl at heart with a firecracker personality. The daughter of Rob and Alice Bumstead of Loyalyn Holsteins, a 35 cow tie-stall operation just west of Owen Sound, she is keenly involved in the family farm. After school she completes her daily chores in the barn which include feeding the cows and calves. Cynthia then finishes her school homework in a lawn chair while her parents milk the cows. When homework is minimal Cynthia helps milk. When Cynthia walks through the barn, she can tell you the name, sire and family tree of every cow and heifer in the barn, never forgetting to give a little extra attention to the favourite cows. Instead of spending her free time playing games on the internet, Cynthia spends countless hours on Holstein Canada looking up cow families and understanding the different families that have contributed to the success at Loyalyn. Cynthia helps with the breeding decisions at Loyalyn by researching possible sire selections for the leading ladies. At last classification, Loyalyn Holsteins had nine Excellent, 24 Very Good and six Good Plus cows, all homebred, with a rolling BCA of 216-228-210.

Holstein Youth Cynthia is also no stranger to the show ring. Showing homebred calves since she was 8, she participated in pre-4-H and now is a member of the Wiarton Dairy Club. This past year, she showed Loyalyn Fever Fantasy. On her achievement day, she placed third in both showmanship and in the Intermediate Calf conformation class and was awarded Best New Member of the Wiarton Dairy Club. At the Bruce-Grey Show in Walkerton she placed 2nd for showmanship. In the future, Cynthia hopes to be a classifier because she would like to see different cows every day. The classifiers have always taken the time to show and teach Cynthia about how to classify and learn the different parts of the cow. Cynthia enjoys learning about cows and teaching others about cows as she will often explain the parts of the cow and her project to her teachers at the public school. Cynthia’s knowledge of the Holstein breed and ability to piece together and analyze the information she gathers is unbelievable. Cynthia’s passion and enthusiasm about the dairy breed and keen interest in research has definitely not gone unnoticed. We look forward to what Cynthia will accomplish as she continues to become more involved in the Holstein breed.

to determine if the yearlings that placed higher in their classes had a better chance of being classified Excellent as they grew older than the calves that were in the younger calf classes. Cynthia asked the question, ‘Is it easier to pick out what heifers will become your best cows at an older age?’. Out of the heifers that showed in the Junior Calf class between 2000 and 2005, 14 per cent are classified Excellent, 33 per cent are Very Good, 29 per cent are Good Plus, four per cent Good and 21 per cent had no information. In comparison, out of the heifers that showed in the Senior Yearling class between 2000 and 2005, ten percent are classified Excellent, 58 per cent are Very Good, 16 per cent are Good Plus, ten per cent are Good and six per cent had no information. Cynthia did this for each of the heifer classes hoping to find a trend. She found that the heifers that were shown in the older heifer classes were more likely to become Very Good or Excellent, because they are closer to becoming cows and will not change as much in comparison to younger calves who are more likely to change in their conformation as they grow.

■ Bruce-Grey Holstein Show Cows ■ Cows classified in Canada

Lastly, Cynthia compared the classification of the Holsteins that were shown in the Bruce-Grey Show from 2000 to 2005 to the classification of all the Holsteins is Canada in 2012. In 2012 alone, 226,750 cows were classified. In this comparison, she discovered that eight per cent more classified Excellent and 16 per cent more classified Very Good while Good Plus, Good and Fair classifications are lower at the BruceGrey Show in comparison to the Canadian records. “I believe that there are more Excellent and Very Good cows at the Bruce-Grey County show in comparison to Canadian classification records in 2012 because farmers take their best cows to the shows. It’s a show before the Royal Winter Fair, ” Cynthia states. “The best heifers are also more likely to be classified better as long as they have a good udder as a cow.” Cynthia worked on this project from March to August and showed it to her leaders of the Wiarton Dairy Club, Brian O’Neill and Shelley Barfoot O’Neill. She will also be presenting her project at the Derby Public School science fair in March. “Cynthia is very enthusiastic for 4-H and the Holstein breed, which shows in her eagerness to work on an exciting project such as this,” says Shelley Barfoot-O’Neill. “We enjoy working and coaching Cynthia as we do all of our amazing members in the Wiarton Club.”

Holstein Youth Dairy Youth Excel at Canada’s Most Prestigious 4-H Dairy Show 2013 TD CANADIAN 4-H DAIRY CLASSIC CELEBRATES 34 YEARS OF YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND COMPETITION Trucks and trailers from across Canada carrying 4-H members and their project calves recently descended upon Toronto for the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic Dairy Show held at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. 345 4-H members from Ontario, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia participated on teams for their respective county, district or province during the show held November 2-4th. 51 teams set up their displays, interacted with Royal visitors, often educating young children about dairy farming, prepared their calves and displayed leadership by helping younger members throughout the three-day competition. 4-H members competed individually in both showmanship and conformation competitions as well as team competitions for Best Exhibit, Best Group of Three Calves and Premier County.

Showmanship Champions Pictured left to right – Associate Judge Jeff West, ribbon presenter Ashley Paul, Craig Bremner, TD Canada Trust, Reserve Showperson Taryn Campbell of Durham West, Grand Champion Showperson Peter Leach of Kawartha Lakes, Judge Paul Hunt, Richard Bosma, Holstein Canada President and ribbon presenter Madison Dyment.

Showmanship judge Paul Hunt of The Netherlands and his associate, Jeff West of Beeton, Ontario, put 4-H members through the paces during showmanship heats on the evening of Sunday November 3rd and in the finals on the morning of November 4th. From a tremendously strong group of winning showpersons in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior categories, Peter Leach of Kawartha Lakes, 1st place Intermediate showperson was named Grand Champion Showperson. Taryn Campbell of Durham West, who was 1st Senior showperson was named Reserve Champion and Ashley Hall of Perth County, who placed 2nd in Senior showmanship was Honourable Mention. Roger Turner of Sun Prairie, WI, USA, the Conformation judge this year, placed the many heats and classes of top 4-H Holsteins, Jerseys and other colour breeds from across the country. Judge Turner gave his nod to the 1st place Holstein Summer Yearling, Signature R Katness, shown by Bryce Seaborn of Northumberland for Grand Champion. Reserve Champion went to Duckett Federal Taz, the 1st place Holstein Senior Heifer shown by Niagara North’s Christine Armstrong. Honourable Mention was claimed by Prince Edward Island’s Kyle Vanderkloet with 2nd place Holstein Summer Yearling Eastside Atwood Glee.

Premier County and Group of Three Calves was won by Durham West. Pictured left to right – Brianne Meek (kneeling), Laura Phoenix, Mariah Beckett, Matt Yates, Siobhan Teel, Quinton Baird, Rebecca Doble, Cally Finley, Taryn Campbell, Wayde Beckett, Dan Werry, Bill Edelstein, Bert Stewart and Patrick Baird (kneeling).

The Best Exhibit is one of the most sought-after titles at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic. Sunday and Monday, the exhibits were judged for cleanliness, interaction with members of the public, signage and the overall display. Waterloo County was declared the winner on Monday afternoon with Carleton and York following in 2nd and 3rd respectively with only fractions of a point difference. New Brunswick and Renfrew followed in 4th and 5th. There were less than two points separating the top five counties. Durham West was the winner of the Group of Three followed by Northumberland in 2nd spot.

Best Exhibit was won by Waterloo County. Front row kneeling left to right: Jerry Abrecht,

The Durham West team continued their winning streak for the 3rd Julia Pilecki. Back row left to right: James Martin & Susan Martin (chaperones), Callum Williams, year in a row being named Premier County, winning the “Bill Edelstein Jayden Hipel, Emily Strenzke, Meghan Eby, Chris Albrecht, Brett Shantz, Mandy Martin and John Bowl” for most points in showmanship, conformation and best exhibit. Holstein Youth The winner of the showbox was Alicia Burgess of Midddlesex. This year’s “Breeder of Distinction” was Bridon Farms of Paris, ON and several members of the Sayles family were on hand to greet the participants during the show. The Sayles family generously donated five embryos from Bridon Exploit Twirl, VG-89 for a draw. Shelby Pegg, of York was the winner of this fabulous prize. There were also two memorial awards presented this year to competitors. For the third year, the Parish family of Woodville, ON, presented an award in memory of their late son, Justin, whose dream was to make it to the 4-H Dairy Classic competition. This year’s recipient was Randy Dixon of the South Frontenac Dairy Club. The second annual Bertram and Hazel Stewart 4-H Dairy Youth Education Award and Bursary was presented to Vicki Brisson of Russell County by the Stewart family. CONFORMATION CHAMPIONS Pictured left to right – Judge Roger Turner, Honourable Mention Champion Kyle Vanderkloet of Prince Edward Island with Eastside Atwood Glee, Reserve Champion, Christine Armstrong of Niagara North with Duckett Federal Taz and Grand Champion, Bryce Seaborn of Northumberland with Signature R Katness.

The Classic would not be possible without the commitment to youth from sponsors TD Canada Trust, Holstein Canada, and Semex Alliance in the form of generous donations. The organizing committee and all of the 4-H members attending are truly grateful for their support. Many 4-H members would not be able to make it the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic without the support of many local sponsors at home, parents, leaders and other volunteers. They deserve a huge thank you as well.

With great Thanks to all of our TD Classic Team’s Sponsors

Excellence

p u r s u it o f

A new excellent cow or a very good two-year-old is a breeding accomplishment. These cows are the highlight of any herd visit and a source of pride for their breeders and owners. From September 2013 through to the end of November 2013, there were 388 1st time Excellent cows and 195 Very Good two-year-olds classified in Ontario. These numbers are a true testament to the commitment our breeders have to breeding structurally sound cows that will stand the test of time. Congratulations to the owners and breeders of Ontario’s new 1st time Excellent cows and Very Good two-year-olds! Holstein Canada’s 2014 Enrolment Program TaggartviewHolsteins, Westport, ON

By Kris MacLeod

The Taggartview prefix was created five years ago when Taggart Farms was trying to come up with a prefix which included the initials of all of the people involved in the farm. Not having any luck with that process, they took their inspiration from the view outside their front window, overlooking the farm, fields and Sand and Wolfe Lakes in Westport.

D

Dan, his wife Lucia and their four kids Kathleen, William, Theresa and Laura farm with Dan’s parents Gordon and Elaine, brother Neil and one hired helper Lisa Walsh. The kids will be the fourth generation on the farm which is made up of 300 acres and 50 milking cows. Since 1995 the farm has won a quality milk certificate every year, only three of which have not been a gold seal. As well they have received the award for lowest SCC in Leeds County five times. When considering registration, recording of the animals’ lineage and age verification were two of the main points they felt would add value to their operation. The bull unit they work with also wanted them to register so that it would help with their mating program and sire selection. Since starting to register their animals, Dan and Lucia’s children have become more involved by helping to do the registration online and naming the calves. They initially tried classification because it was a stipulation for the new herd enrolment and the AI unit as well. They have found it to be a valuable tool that makes the mating program more accurate with a wider variety of bulls. Taggartview Camryn (Whittail-Valley Cooper) VG 87 is a herd favorite and one of their highest scoring to date. They are looking forward to their first Excellent cow. “The classifiers are good at pointing out areas to improve in a cow as well her strengths,” says Dan. Taggartview sells a number of heifers each year with some of them going on to make 4-H projects like the red and white summer yearling heifer Taggartview Sunny Accolade, a 4-H project for Rachel Clow. Sunny and Rachel were part of the Frontenac county 4-H team that competed in the TD Classic at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair this year. Another red and white they sold as a heifer ended up at Polestar Farm, Taggartview Doris Camden VG-87-3Yr. The boys at Polestar think there could be some more points in her yet. While appreciating these successes, going forward the Taggart’s are hoping to hold on to more of the red cows to breed for themselves. Red and whites account for 12 head in the herd. The past few years have seen some changes on the farm as the Taggart’s look for labour saving alternatives. Switching over to TMR decreased feeding time but resulted in a jump in production which required a larger bulk tank. Last summer a new open-front style heifer barn was built to be able to keep a closer eye on heats and to have all the animals at the same location. The Taggart’s are currently looking at some options to make the milking go easier, such as switching from a tie-stall to a flat parlour or track system in the stable. Editor’s Note: The Taggart’s would like to thank Ontario Holstein representative Kris MacLeod for all of his help in guiding them through the registration process. He helped with everything from getting the older cows registered to tagging.

TaggartVIEW SUNNY ACCOLADE was sold to Rachel Clow who used her as a 4-H calf in 2013. She was 5th at the Eastern Ontario Western Quebec 4-H Championship show and at the Merrickville Open 4-H Show she was 1st Summer Yearling and Reserve Grand Champion.

Experience the benefits of animal registration and classification! • Available to all herds who have not classified in two or more years. • Herd consultation visit with an experienced classifier. Discuss the benefits of classification and how the information can be used on farm. • No charge herd visit fee (regular or mid round) for first classification. • For qualifying herds with no registration activity for 3 or more years the program will also offer: – Registration fee discounted by 50% for all animals (excluding base) registered within 6 months of commitment to the program. – No charge to transfer ownership of animals resident in the herd prior. – To qualify for the registration savings herds must agree to participate in at least one classification visit. • Ontario Holstein Field staff are available to help you with the registration process.

Valleyville Musketeer VG-ST ‘13 Bonair x Goldwyn

L to R: Valleyville Muskateer Tana VG-85-2YR Valleyville Muskateer Torrey GP-83-2YR Westriver Musketeer Cindy VG-85-2YR

From the field...

Musketeer comes from a popular family, his dam is a full sister to the RAWF and WDE Supreme Champion, Eastside Lewisdale Gold Missy. This unique Bonair cross on Goldwyn combines the strengths from this family, while improving SCS. A large majority of Musketeer daughters seen had below average SCS when compared to their herdmates. They also show

positive fat and protein deviations. They have well attached udders, with great median suspensory ligaments and udder texture. Their stature and height at front end is impressive, and we’ve been told by breeders that they have the chest width they are looking for. Two strengths Musketeer offers are his solid ratings for feet and legs, and rump. Daughters

exhibit legs which are pleasing from both side and rear view angles, combined with a correct foot structure. We appreciated the Musketeer daughter rump structure, correct angle, strong loin, and their pin width. Musketeer is an ideal cross on hard working cows boosting components, improving SCS, and overall type. - Raphaëlle Lemay, CIAQ Sire Analyst
