Dogs help at risk expressway ducks DAVID HAXTON

With noses and eyes on high alert, specially trained sniffer dogs Maddie and Rua carefully make their way through thick undergrowth searching for an endangered bird species. Their focus of operation is the low-lying Wharemauku flood storage area, at the western end of Ihakara St, Paraparaumu, which is a key part of Mackays to Peka Peka Expressway. Before heavy machinery rolls into the area soon, checks are being made for endangered grey duck. Originally people were going to comb the area looking

for grey duck, until it was decided dogs would be much better value for money. “The dogs cover so much ground and their sense of smell is amazing. And they’ve done a really good job working through this pretty quickly.” Close behind Maddie, 7, and Rua, 2, is their owner Jo Sim, from Dabchick NZ in Levin. She has trained the pair of dogs, which she muzzles during the search, to sit and wait for her if they make a discovery. So far no native grey duck [which does hybridise with the introduced mallard duck] had been found, although the dogs had discovered some

dead mallard duck carcasses and some rabbits. If a nesting site is discovered, an exclusion zone is created around the area, to allow the eggs to hatch and the chicks to move on. Expressway ecologist Matiu Park said grey duck protection was one of the many consent conditions of the expressway. “There’s a few local ornithologists who have done quite a bit of bird watching here and they alerted us through the Board of Inquiry process that this would have been habitat for grey duck.” The search area was large. “This is about a 10ha area that’s going to be developed as

a flood storage area,” Mr Park said. “And it’s going to be subject to some pretty big construction. There will be a fair amount of activity with groundworks, the bridge going over [the Wharemauku stream], the piling and the creation of this flood storage area.” Work was also being done to ensure protection of another at-risk species, the native pipit. “Probably prior to European colonisation, it was probably quite rare in the landscape, but they love nesting in grass, and we’ve got quite a lot of management work to do further up the line in the Nga Manu to Peka Peka area.”

Two sections of the main sewer lines that pump waste water from Waikanae and a large area of Paraparaumu to the treatment plant are being replaced over the next two weeks. The Transport Agency is funding the work, which involves replacing the sections of pipe that cross under the new expressway alignment with more resilient pipe material, installed in concrete sleeves for extra protection. Additional sleeves are also being installed for pipelines that will be required further down the track as the district’s population grows. Six shutdowns on the network will be required for this work to take place, but residents will not be affected as tanker trucks will be used to remove waste water while the sewer lines are closed. Waikanae-based Goodman Contractors is one of two companies named as winners in the Z Energy People Awards. It won the category for companies with a turnover of $10m to $25m. Lower Hutt-based Construction Contracts Ltd won the under $10m turnover category.

Council’s refurbished civic building in Paraparaumu has been awarded 4.5 stars out of 6 for energy performance under NABERSNZ, the energy rating scheme for office buildings. The score, covering the whole building’s energy use, denotes ‘excellent’ energy efficiency. It is the second council building in New Zealand to obtain a such a rating, after Auckland Council achieved 3.5 stars for one of its buildings last year.

HOME SUPPORT

Otaki MP Nathan Guy has welcomed National’s plans to double the Government support for first-home buyers. “The package will help more first-home buyers in Otaki achieve the dream of owning their own home over the next five years. “In Kapiti, the new house price caps for the KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant and Welcome Home Loans schemes will be increased from $300,000 to $450,000. “That means many more people in the Otaki electorate will be able to get government support when buying their first home.”

Genealogists records help school CLOE WILLETTS Copies of over 6000 Paraparaumu School records up to 89 years old were handed over to the school’s principal, Steven Caldwell on Monday morning, despite being lost in this month’s fire. The replacement records, dating 1889-1978 were made available in electronic form, thanks to the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG). The role of NZSG, an organisation associated with family history, includes the preservation of birth, death, and marriage records, as well as church and school attendance data. Mr Caldwell was relieved the attendance, progress and withdrawal records were part of a master database, after being transcribed over several years by local genealogist, John Glover and his team from NZSG’s Kapiti branch. Mr Glover, alongside NZSG representative Bill McKeich, convenor of the Kapiti branch, and national councillor Peter Gibson, of Porirua, handed over the copies to recent new entrant Emerson Walker, 5.

Mr Caldwell said the assistance meant he would not have to start at the beginning when tracking back and piecing together the school’s lost archives. Although most records from 1978 are lost and will be hard to trace, Mr Caldwell said the school is hoping to use what is available at its 125th anniversary celebration this November. “People can go back and look at where their enrolment might have been. “I really appreciate this, it’s something we’ll really treasure.” To date, over three million records from 1700 schools throughout New Zealand have been transcribed and archived by the NZSG. While publication of such records is restricted to later than 95 years from date of admission, due to privacy guidelines, Mr McKeich said he is concerned that most of Kapiti’s primary schools are “far from having their records up to date”. “This recent event here at Paraparaumu School is probably a bit of an incentive for schools to do something about it, and have their records transcribed.”

Politicians battle over expressway DAVID HAXTON Rob McCann, Labour candidate for the Otaki electorate, has rejected a statement by Otaki MP Nathan Guy saying people will be appalled opposition parties are still threatening to scrap the MacKays to Peka Peka Expressway. “The last thing the expressway needs is for the bulldozers to be halted while Labour does a so-called reevaluation of the expressway,” Mr Guy said. He says his concerns follow

Labour’s transport policy announcement that it would reevaluate the expressway. “This despite the $630 million project already well under way, with more than 400 people employed. “Locals that I talk to are blown away by the speed by which the project is progressing and this will all be put at risk by a future Labour government that has always hated the expressway.” He said only months ago Labour’s then-transport spokeswoman Darien Fenton

was quoted in a newspaper saying the party would stop the expressway if elected. “Even Labour leader David Cunliffe has been quoted as saying ‘the new roads of national significance risks wasting billions of dollars, the project [which includes the Kapiti Expressway] should be halted’.” Mr Guy says it was also worrying that Labour’s policy would impact on another project National wants to get started, Transmission Gully. “It looks like Transmission Gully will be delayed as Labour

dithers on how it will fund this vital road. “There is strong local support for these projects demonstrated in both local and national elections. “With the Green Party also promising to scrap the expressway, local voters now face a stark choice if they want efficient, safe roads and jobs for the region.” But Mr McCann was “very disappointed that Nathan is scaremongering like he is”. “I think it’s just a diversion away from the lack of progress

that he and National have made in putting any growth into the regions outside of the roading project. “Labour isn’t threatening to scrap the expressway at all. We totally recognise work has begun, we’ve said that over and over again, but we will look at the progress so far and consider whether any changes can be made to improve the design and value for dollar. “Any statement along the lines of bulldozers will be stopped is absolutely wrong. Treatment plant upgrade on track DAVID HAXTON Work to upgrade the important water treatment plant in Waikanae is going well and is expected to be complete early next year. “There’s lots going on,” council water and wastewater treatment plant manager David Bassett said when Kapiti News visited the site on Friday. “At one stage we had 30 contractors on site.” The treatment plant, which was built in the mid 1970s, supplies water to Paraparaumu, Waikanae and Raumati; there was a smaller plant built earlier but it only supplied parts of Waikanae. Mr Bassett, who has worked for council for nearly 20 years, outlined numerous aspects of the upgrade. There are two new inlet screens for water from the Waikanae River before it goes into pumps. The screens, which stop various debris such as leaves and twigs and even small fish getting through, also have an automatic air compression cleaning system to remove debris instead of someone having to clean the screens manually with a broom. In the same area, raw water pumps are being renewed and will be powered by AC motors instead of DC motors. “Those pumps will be able to produce 400 litres per second of water into the treatment plant,” Mr Bassett said.

There are also improvements to chemical mixing going through the pumps. Dosing systems within the treatment plant are being replaced and improved. A lot of repair work is being done to the treatment plant building, which has good bones, from seismic strengthening right through to new bathrooms including one for women — which is a first for the treatment plant. Two high lift pumps, which pump up from the treatment plant to reservoirs [about 60m], and are costly to run, are being replaced; four others will be replaced during stage two works. The electrical system, including switchboard and control panel, is being completely upgraded. As well as the water treatment plant upgrade, infrastructure to enable the river recharge scheme to operate is being created. Downer has the contract for both work streams, costing $7.3m, with both projects due for completion in March next year. Regarding the river recharge scheme, water from three new production bores will be pumped to the treatment plant site and diverted to an aeration swale before going into the river. A year’s worth of baseline monitoring is needed before discharging the bore water into the river, and then only a small percentage can go in until three years later when the full consent kicks in.

Fast response saves house DAVID HAXTON

SMOKEY: The scene of a house fire in Winara Ave, Waikanae.

An observant neighbour and a fast response from firefighters saved a Waikanae house from being destroyed by fire. Waikanae Volunteer Fire Brigade deputy fire chief Alan Tinney said the brigade was called when a neighbour noticed smoke coming from the address in Winara Ave just after 10am on Friday. “It was a one-and-a-half-storey dwelling and the fire was confined to the laundry and kitchen areas. “They had it out in about 10 or 15

Road works being fast tracked

FAST AND EFFICIENT: Nathan Hutchinson, left, and Bryce Moller have developed an online courier website.

Online courier service being trialled in Kapiti DAVID HAXTON A online courier website, making it easier and cheaper for people to send packages throughout the country, is being trialled in Kapiti before it is rolled out nationwide. Paraparaumu IT graduate Nathan Hutchinson and gallery director Bryce Moller, from Raumati Beach, have joined forces to develop shunt.co.nz where users enter their pick-up and delivery addresses, select the courier, print out their ticket from any normal A4 printer, before a courier collects the package from home and delivers it. Nathan, recently concluded his degree by completing an industry project worth three papers and receiving a grade of 98.5 per cent from Ucol in

Palmerston North. “I’ve tried to make the website really easy for the user so it looks and performs like a very simple site,” he said. “However, the database running everything behind the few pages that a customer uses is quite complex.” Bryce, who is director of Shona Moller Gallery, said: “Nathan has removed the need to buy books of courier tickets or to queue at the Post Shop or to even have an account with a courier company. “It’s all done online and your parcel gets picked up from your door, even the NZ Post parcels. “The website is fully integrated with Trade Me so any items you sell on Trade Me can be sent with two clicks

using this new system. “We just wanted a system that was simple and convenient that everybody in the community could use, something that would save people time and make life a little bit easier.” The pair have been testing the system for the past few months and have been in discussions with all the major courier companies. “We’ve had excellent discussions with all of the major courier companies and we have developed a very good understanding of how the industry works,” Bryce said. “Because our system is all online, the rates to send parcels are actually cheaper than going to Post Shop, plus your parcel gets picked up from your door at no extra cost.”

“We are currently working on a bulk upload feature so that if you have, say, 20 parcels to send out all at once, you will be able to upload that list into our site and 20 courier tickets will pop out for you. “People won’t have to drop the parcels off anywhere and all of the names and addresses get printed out onto the tickets so nothing needs to be handwritten. “It will also be cheaper than purchasing directly from the courier companies.” And for those who don’t own printers, the courier can bring the ticket with them when they go and pick the item up. Parcel pick-ups will be available from Raumati South to Paraparaumu North first before expanding to other parts of the district and different parts of the country.

Council is fast-tracking roadworks in a section of Kapiti Rd which have been going on longer than expected and causing headaches for business owners. The roadworks, which involves widening Kapiti Rd to four lanes in the Milne Drive to Te Roto Drive area, started on April 14 and was expected to last for three months. But work has dragged on as the scope has increased to incorporate underground power lines, increased footpath widths, increased alignment to link to the Mackay’s to Peka Peka Expressway, and been poor weather conditions. Infrastructure services group manager Sean Mallon said council was aware of the disruption businesses had suffered and is now investing in a more expensive paving method to ensure the intersections flow freely within a matter of days. He says the technology involves bitumen-bound material being laid by a paving machine. “Once it is laid and compacted the surface is ready to accept vehicle traffic straight away, before the asphalt top is added. The method will reduce a job that would have taken two or three weeks to two or three days. “We felt it is necessary to make that investment to ensure there is the least disruption possible for traffic at the two intersections. Moreover, the work will be done at night when traffic will be least affected.” He said consideration will be given to further night work in order to speed up the project and minimise disruptions. “We are committing to getting the work completed beside the shops as quickly as we can. We want to finish that section and move to works required further east, towards where the expressway interchange will be sited, and also across the road on to the southern side.” He said works planned for the next week and a half include putting basecourse in the centre of Kapiti Rd and at the eastern end of the project, creating a footpath east of the Te Roto Drive intersection, and stabilising the central island outside The Mill. Both power and telecommunication services have to be taken underground. Before work moves to the southern side of the road, council will approach those shops to discuss what can be done to minimise the effect on their business.

TEN POINT CHECK LIST FOR HOME BUYERS It is said that many home buyers decide on a property within the first 15 seconds of entering it! It may be the first property you see, it may be the hundredth, but a quick check list of your own personal “property priorities” could save you time, stress and money. My “Ten Point Check List for Home Buyers” is a simple way to get a clear and sensible comparison of the properties in your price range,as you view them. If the property is the best you have seen in your price range – BUY IT! Remember, I can show you any of the properties we have listed at Tommys Kapiti.

Council response caring On Waitangi Day last year, a bombshell hit not just Kapiti, but the whole New Zealand construction industry. When a construction company the size of Mainzeal falls over, the ripple effects for the community are widespread. It was New Zealand’s third largest construction company — believed to have $7.5 billionworth of projects on its books. The collapse of Mainzeal was devastating for the people for whom Mainzeal was constructing buildings, for the creditors of the company, and for the sub-contractors working on building sites around the country. Tradies lost work instantly. Worse, many were

locked out of the sites, unable to claim their tools and equipment they needed to find new work elsewhere. Among the casualties was the Coastlands Aquatic Centre, then just seven weeks short of completion. On the day the news broke, chief executive Pat Dougherty, deputy chief executive Tamsin Evans and the council’s legal representative, met with the

receivers and Mainzeal to discuss a range of solutions to enable the project to continue. Very quickly, we worked out a legal solution to enable those sub-contractors who returned to the job to be paid by council. We could not make up for what Mainzeal had failed to pay them, but what we could and did do was set up a trust account with a legal firm, to act as the ‘bridge’ between ourselves and the tradesmen. There was another method council used to minimise the financial impact on Kapiti. We had prudently required a $1.5 million performance bond in our contract with Mainzeal. That bond was held in a bank

and protected. In a financial sense, the total direct cost from the receivership to Kapiti would have been $1.8m. Through negotiation, we have pegged that back to $620,000. In a functional sense, we got the Coastlands Aquatic Centre opened in August last year, when it could have been held up for months if not years if we had re-tendered the work. In a ‘caring about business’ sense, we looked after the subcontractors as best we could. We got behind them and got most back to work, with guaranteed pay packets. It was a dynamic, effective response by council. And above all, it was a caring response.

Search for hit-and-run driver CLOE WILLETTS A hit-and-run has caused significant damage to a vehicle owned by Paekakariki’s Doris Lorenz, who cannot afford to have it fixed after recently being disestablished from work. The incident, which took place in Paraparaumu and left the car’s front passenger side notably smashed, occurred on Friday 15 or Saturday 16 of this month. “Unfortunately, I don’t know exactly where my car was when it happened, or what time, as I discovered the damage much later,” said Mrs Lorenz, who suffers from

a health condition. “The driver left without giving any information, although some colour particles were left on my car, which suggests it was a white car.” Hoping somebody has information surrounding the damage to her red 1998 Toyota Corolla hatchback, Mrs Lorenz said she hopes “the person has a heart and will consider coming forward”. “It has been very distressing for me.” ■ If anyone has any information, phone Mrs Lorenz on 021 130 8395.

Big picture needed I have been asked why would anyone choose to live in a retirement village, surrounded only by ‘old people’, doing ‘old’ things when you have the choice of continuing to live in the ‘real’ world? Such comments demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of what retirement village living is all about.

The independent review of the Otaki treecutting prosecution, related to the Standens, the McLeaveys and the Monkeyman, is now complete. Councillors were briefed last week but the contents of the report would not be made public until September 4. That does not stop me discussing what’s not in the contents. In a previous column, it was noted that political decisions do not take place in a vacuum. That officers frame the decisional environment within which politicians make decisions. It’s no different with a lot of so-called everyday decisions people make. We live and interact within a socio-economic, cultural and political environment. The terms of reference for this review was confined to examining the events from a time-line that started with two telephone complaints to council, about trees being cut, in August 1, 2013. This effectively cut off a significant factor in the decision of the Standens and McLeaveys to modify the trees on their private properties. To understand one has to go back to November 2012. That’s when council notified the Proposed District Plan. It triggered off a huge reaction dominated by those opposed to the imposition of coastal hazard lines. The lack of media reporting, however, meant the general public were largely ignorant of the alienation of another significant community — rural landowners. Many concerned about the imposition of ecological sites underpinned with draconian rules. Residential property owners, like the 22 along Oriwa Crescent with bush in their backyards, were also caught. My conversations with the Standens, the McLeaveys, and other Oriwa Cres residents who attended two street meetings organised by local board member Colin Pearce, indicated clearly that people were deeply concerned and confused about

While there are now a range of different models of retirement villages operating in our community, we all have some shared commonalities. The most obvious common factor is age of occupants but it goes way beyond that. My experience is that many people get to a point in their life when they no longer want to spend time and energy on activities they no longer feel inclined or are able to do. This can include home repairs and maintenance, gardens and lawns. At this point in their life many are keen to have social activities and interaction with others close-by; should they get to a point where they stop driving or no longer have the inclination to travel to such events. For many, there is also an attraction in knowing your neighbours and having them at home during the day; rather than living in a deserted neighbourhood where all are at work from dawn to dusk. This is particularly pertinent in Kapiti where so many commute out of the area for work. Retirement villages are what their name implies – a village. A return to the communities many remember from the past when your day-to-day living happened within walking distance. Within retirement villages there is ever-increasing demand to have available a full continuum of care. This is understandable. After making such a move, who then wants to move again because of increased fragility for resthome or hospital level, aged care? While historically, only around 5% of the population ended up in such facilities, with people living longer an increased need for such care is inevitable.

MEMORABLE JOURNEY ENJOY: Kate Emerson-Gray, front left, 80, and Marie Furey, 94, front right, and others, settle in to enjoy the film The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out Of The Window And Disappeared, which screened at the Shoreline Cinema in Waikanae on Thursday.

This is where I think there is confusion. Retirement villages are not hospitals for old people! One of the best definitions I have heard is that “retirement villages are caring communities while aged care facilities are communities of care”. A very subtle but important difference. Retirement village living is all about people getting on with their lives. Nothing demonstrates this better than the initiative members of the Kapiti Retirement Trust’s Residents’ Association have taken recently in organising an election forum. The focus of this is around the policies the various parties have relating to aged care services. I understand the response they have received from all the Residents’ Associations of the other retirement villages in Kapiti, has indicated a strong interest in this topic, along with interest from those working in the sector. Our group of residents have organised candidates from the National, Labour, Greens and NZ First Parties to address a public meeting. Details are:

ELECTION FORUM - AGED CARE FUNDING & WELL-BEING Date: Monday 1 September Time: 2.00 – 3.30 pm Place: The Meadows Church auditorium, cnr Mazengarb and Realm Drive Well-known radio presenter and Chair of the Kapiti Coast Older Persons’ Council, John Hayes will MC the meeting. It is open to all who have an interest in aged care funding and health services. Any politician who ignores the collective strength of the retired voting public does so at their peril! This is a great example of democracy being alive and well in our retirement villages and of the energy and abilities of those living independently, in a caring community.

the draconian rules of the PDP. Like the Standens and McLeaveys, some had taken action to trimming trees in their backyard before the PDP was passed into law. What they did not realise is that some rules, like those defining ecological sites, have an immediate legal effect upon notification. However, one can safely argue that the rules of Operative District Plan were also breached. While accepting that argument, there is no denying that the draconian new rules of the PDP had a significant impact on ordinary people. People who, under duress and however mistaken, thought they should do something before the draconian rules took effect. The fact that the PDP was draconian is borne out by the independent panel that reviewed the PDP. It was not best practice. The rules and control over maintenance and modification, or removal of species, were excessive and even “incomprehensible”. Some of the mapping of eco-sites were not “ground truthed” — meaning there was no evidence. How do these damning conclusions apply to the Oriwa Cres case? In conclusion, the review by Richard Fowler QC will aspire to give a legal analysis of the prosecution process. As politicians, we need to take a bigger picture. The review will not tell you how planning, especially bad planning, impacts on our communities and affects the actions of individual actors in these communities. The Standens and McLeaveys were also victims of bad planning by council.

Push for age-friendly community It’s 6.59am and the temperature is 2°C! I am walking down the main street of Coober Pedy — Australia’s Opal Capital — in outback South Australia. I’m here because this is a place that has fascinated me for over 50 years. The tour I took drove up from Adelaide through many outback towns — some of which are dwindling in size as populations drift away. The same thing is likely to happen in New Zealand. In fact, there is already considerable concern for some of our smaller provincial towns. Kapiti is less likely to be affected by this than many other towns in New Zealand. In fact, given the high percentage of

elderly who choose to retire to the Kapiti Coast, we will see continued growth. This, then, means we have even more reason to make sure we become age-friendly. That last comment also related to the other reason for my visit to Australia — I had the opportunity to meet with Dr Kathleen Brasher, of the Australian Council of the Aged (or COTA as it is more commonly known). Dr Brasher has the

responsibility for introducing the World Health Organisation’s Age-Friendly Communities project to all Australian states and, as you can imagine, she has a wealth of experience upon which we can build. She also put me in touch with Dr Alex Kalache — the person who developed the agefriendly project worldwide. The good news is, Dr Kalache will be in New Zealand mid-September, and we plan to meet. What a great opportunity this will be to make sure that Kapiti heads along the right track in developing age-friendly policies. Age-friendly in this context refers to creating the best opportunities for all ages —

not just the elderly. Back to life on the Kapiti Coast. Tuesday saw the inaugural presentation to the Kapiti Coast Elder Person of the Year. The Kapiti Coast Older Persons’ Council plans to make this an annual event, and its significance lies in recognising the valuable contribution made by our older residents. Kapiti Coast has the highest percentage of retirees of all communities in New Zealand, so it is fitting to recognise the contribution they make to all levels of life in Kapiti. ■ If you would like to know more about the age-friendly work in our district, contact jillestan0@gmail.com

Waikanae Community Board Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ), the advocacy agency for a number of local councils, including Kapiti Coast District Council, has come out strongly stating its desire to see economic growth achieved across all of New Zealand. This is particularly important, given New Zealand’s social landscape is changing as the population ages, becomes more diverse and increasingly urbanised. Regional economic development is gaining pace as an important topic of conversation within local government, central government, the media and communities and will no doubt be a key theme to this year’s election campaign for each of the parties. Economic growth across all of New Zealand is one of the single biggest priorities for communities. It is not just an issue for central government but one our local government, including our council. Our council needs to take a leadership role in assisting our community develop and grow. Locally it is important that we find ways to develop our regional strengths and create an environment which offer opportunities in education, employment and business; as places where skilled locals want to stay and set up business, and where skilled migrants want to settle. It is essential that our council understands the uncertainties governing our future development, and the local implications of population changes, particularly as they begin to implement the 2015-25 long term plan and any infrastructure strategies. As our economic landscape reorients in the face of major demand for commodities from the growing economies of Asia we should be asking what are we doing to take advantage of these developments? How will it impact on transport links, investment and governance at the local and regional levels. We should be asking what is our council doing to deal with uncertainty so that planning helps prepare communities to face the future. The Kapiti Coast could be the future power house for the lower North Island. We need to make sure our council enables our community to be well placed to take advantage of these opportunities.

It’s a fact of life that people and relationships change. And in those moments of change, emotions often get in the way of sensible and equitable negotiation. At The Law Connection we have a team of Lawyers with enormous experience with all kinds of disputes and negotiations. Whatever your situation, however complex (or inconceivable!), we can bring our experience to bear to help keep things objective and achieve the optimum outcome. Life has a funny habit of serving up the unexpected. And when it does, we’re here to help, because, guess what? We’ve probably seen it all before. Well, nearly all of it...

Economic growth across all of New Zealand is one of the single biggest priorities for communities. It is not just an issue for central government but one our local government, including our council.

IN THE BLOOD: First and second generation Goodman family members, left to right, Lance Goodman, Marianne Archer, Rick Goodman, Stan Goodman and Vaughn Goodman. PHOTO: CLOE WILLETTS / KAP220814CWGOODMANFAMILY

Family firm big part of community Goodman Contractors goes from strength to strength CLOE WILLETTS “I wasn’t much good at school, so the old man told me I might as well milk the cows for him,” says Rick ‘the old man’ Goodman, as he recalls his early days working on his family’s Otaihanga farm. The farm that once characterised Rick’s outdoor roots as a young Kiwi dressed in Roman sandals, a singlet and shorts, and cotton wool for ear plugs now highlights the latest stage of his life, as it rests in the path of the imminent MacKays to Peka Peka Expressway project. The old family home is now among the collection of houses being demolished to make way for Kapiti’s largest roading project; the premises now just a platform for memories surrounding Rick’s cascade into early business entrepreneurship. “My brother Tony and I first took our Ford Country bulldozer out in 1960 to help with some earthmoving work for the old man, who was working as a plumber overseer for a Ministry of Housing works site in Porirua,” said Rick, who became a business owner for the first time in 1963. “He told us to go and buy a second machine, so we purchased a loader, and from there bought a Ford Costcutter truck, and while still milking the cows our business began to grow.” Rick’s earlier days, which saw him battling New Zealand’s wavering economy, had him running Goodman Earthmovers with his brother Tony Goodman up until 1994,

before the business fell into receivership due to what he describes as “financial hardship and mismanagement”. A number of years have passed since the receiver suggested Rick buy the plant back because “it was worth nothing”, and get 20 of his friends to give him $5,000 each — the now-termed Goodman Contractors is one of the coast’s most successful family-owned businesses. “That’s exactly what we did, went to 20 of our mates and came up with the $100,000,” says Rick, who watched his father sell the family farm not long after he stepped into business. “Work slowly picked up, and I eventually bought Tony out of the business so I could focus solely on running it, because up until then money had been coming out to cover our other projects including a fast-food outlet, clothing and jewellery range, our own zoo, and riding motorbikes.” With wife Helen, who is retiring from the business at the end of this month after 47 years, Rick went on to rename the company Goodman & Sons, in an effort to incorporate the involvement of the pair’s three eager sons Stan, Lance and Vaughn Goodman. “They asked to join the business, but I told them they couldn’t unless they had a trade — so Stan became a civil engineer, Lance a fitter welder, and Vaughn a plumber,” says Rick, who ultimately renamed the company Goodman Contractors after the joining of daughter Marianne Goodman,

now Archer. Thriving, and with a total of 23 direct relations currently working for the team, Goodman Contractors is widely known for its family-driven philosophy. “Our mum has been backing the business right from the get go, and originally drove trucks for Dad with the boys in beside her,” explains quantity surveyor and codirector Marianne, who works as quality health and safety and environmental manager. “On top of that, she was doing all of Dad’s admin, including typing and wages.” “It’s really important she gets a mention,” says Rick, who describes Helen, 68, as a form of backbone for the business, which is now predominantly run by the second generation of Goodmans. What started as siblings joining their family business as fresh young adults at the onset of their careers now sees them co-direct an industry-leading business, which owns over 150 items of earthmoving machinery, on top of 50-plus company vehicles. “It’s like a sandpit,” describes oldest brother and managing director Stan, as the family sit around the boardroom table of their Waikanae-based business headquarters. Home to a collection of paint, engineering, fitting, engine and mechanical workshops, the Goodman Contractors base is scattered with an array of fluorescentlylit employees, some of whom have worked with the business for more than 10 years. Despite a range of largescale earthmoving projects under the company’s belt, the expressway is the biggest so far, and when asked how they feel about securing the project, the siblings quickly respond in chorus.

“It’s marvellous,” says Stan. “We are very grateful,”, follows Lance. “My wife remembers who I am now,” jokes “troubleshooter out in the field,” Vaughn, describing the siblings’ prior need to travel New Zealand in chase of work. Marianne interjects, saying as well as enabling them to be part of a “legacy”, the Kapitibased roading project has allowed them to provide work for their wider family. “We’re a family business, and that’s what drives us. “We currently employ 12 local families, who make up 29 of our 140 permanent staff, and that’s what it’s all about for us. “We don’t judge success on financial means, but on how many families we’re feeding.” Lance, who specialises in HR and is described by his family as “Mr Fun”, says Goodman Contractors is also noted for its dedication to employing the younger generation, because of his father’s “faith in young people”. “We learnt to drive machinery from around 11, and believe if you give the right young people responsibility at the right age, you get the rewards back.” “Also”, Vaughn says, “you’ve got to run with energy, and if you haven’t got that balance of young energy, you can get too stale”. Also a training company, Goodman Contractors currently runs up to 20 on-site courses in the field, with an additional five apprentice mechanics. “We give employees a hand to get all their licences,” says Stan, “and have a full-time trainer and an assessor who can approve getting their wheel, tracks, and rollers.” Lance, who has a strong belief the school curriculum is

not always encompassing for students with a “different type of clever”, says a number of employees in management or senior positions “had their principals tell them they’d never amount to anything”. “Two of them were kicked out in fourth form, and are supervisors now, and very bloody good ones. “They’re the sort of people who have energy, drive and street smarts, and thrive in this industry. “It’s an industry where you have to have good decisionmaking skills, and be able to back yourself.” Stan agrees, saying their best employees have the natural aptitude to think outside the square. As the family interacts, answering the string of questions in a collaborative conversational approach, it is easily obvious to see they have a tight family bond. “Vaughn and Stan were my best friends growing up,” Lance says. “Sometimes we’d go away with Dad and they were the only playmates I had, and now we’re working together, we’re still best friends.” The brothers recall having their own minor earthmoving operations take place in the backyard sandpit growing up, with Stan acting as the project manager, and Lance and Vaughn the workers. “Then I came along, and was buried in the sandpit, and made to be the dam,” Marianne chips in, followed by a roomful of laughter. When asked how it really is working so closely together as a family, the group look around the table at one another, before Lance replies: “It’s awesome, an argument can last for weeks”. “No,” Rick smiles. “It’s a laugh a minute.”

WATER UPDATE Saviing $$ $$ on wa ater Paraparaumu Beach residents Beverley and Allan Taylor are one of the estimated two-thirds of Kāpiti households who will be better off under the new meter-based water charging scheme. The couple will pay about $100 less for water per year compared to what they paid under the old system. “The user pays system is fairer,” Allan says. “It will also encourage people to fix leaks and to avoid watering their gardens indiscriminately. “We have to shift our thinking. We’ve been in a position where water was abundant and we didn’t have to think about how much we used. But things are changing – the climate is getting warmer and the population is growing. We can’t keep using water as we have been or we’ll end up paying the price.”

Allan Taylor in his low-water use garden.

Allan has used his water meter to check for leaks a number of times. “Water meters have saved the district millions of litres of water. I’ve heard countless stories of people having horrendous water leaks on their property which would’ve stayed hidden if meters hadn’t helped to detect them. If you don’t measure something, how can you tell if you’re losing it?” The couple have water-saving measures in place including an inground rainwater tank which supplies water to flush the toilets. They also recycle their greywater from the shower, basins and bath to water parts of the garden when needed. However, the grounds around their house are covered with crushed lime, rather than lawn, which doesn’t require watering and drought-tolerant plants grow in the garden beds. Allan’s wife Beverley says she thinks a lot of people seem resistant to changing their behaviour when it comes to water use. “Having to be careful about using water is completely normal in so many countries. In California you get fined $500 if you use water anywhere outside!”

Wate er in nvoicess A third of the district’s water meters will be read each month followed by the mailing out of invoices. First invoices will be sent as follows: • Ōtaki and Waikanae residents – early September

Paym men nt op ptio ons There are a variety of ways you can pay your water invoices, including: • automatic payment • internet & telephone banking (Council’s account number is 03-0732-0306101-00) • credit card online via Council’s website • cheque • direct debit (if you have a direct debit set up for your general rates, you will need a new one for water rates if you want to pay this way – contact Council for a form to set up this facility from December) • in person at a Council service centre. Please include your water account number in any payment details. To request you receive your invoices by email from December, please email water.meters@kapiticoast.govt.nz with your property address, water account number and ratepayer name.

Keep p yo our watter me eterr cle ear Please keep the lid of your water meter clear of grass and other foliage, so it can be easily located by the meter readers. This saves time and money.

• Paraparaumu residents – early October • Raumati/Paekākāriki residents – early November. Ratepayers will then get their water invoices every three months. A small number of areas will receive invoices differently to the above schedule, so we can balance the number of meter readings over each three-monthly period. For a detailed meter reading schedule, go to www.kapiticoast.govt.nz/water-charging

Note: water charges are now invoiced separately from general rates, so ratepayers will receive two invoices every quarter – one for general rates and one for water rates – at different times.

27 August 2014

Leak k de etecction n About 443 leaks around the district have been detected through water meters. If leaks are fixed, we avoid wasting thousands of litres of water. Go to www.kapiticoast.govt.nz/water-leaks to find out how to check for leaks and what to do if you find one.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Purely business decisions

Re Nathan Guy’s statement reported in your paper August 20. Does Mr Guy not read your paper? Your paper has reported, over many years, that Labour has been in favour of Transmission Gully. The financing of this project has sometimes been questioned, but not the need. Re the expressway, while Labour was bitterly opposed to the destruction of homes and habitats that this monstrosity has caused, we realise that the project has been pushed ahead with surprising speed. When Labour becomes Government, our policy states that the “situation will be reassessed”. Obviously, much of the damage is irreparable and many factors will be considered in whatever decision is made. Mr Guy cannot take credit for the improved rail. It was budgeted and approved by the previous Labour Government. The airport and Ryman Village are hardly due to any action by Mr Guy or the National-led Government. They are purely business decisions. JAN NIMMO Waikanae

Agency gives itself credit

The NZ Transport Agency has given itself credit for taking an environmentally sensitive approach to the expressway construction. But how believable is this claim? Ever since they began piling rock scoria fill on the Raumati South excavation, a red pollutant has been entering the water in

Drain Seven that winds through Raumati and empties into the Wharemauku, just behind the airport. This discolouration is persistent and ongoing. It is supposed to be monitored by NIWA, which have installed electronic monitors in the Wharemauku. Often enough, however, these are jammed up with debris from the frequent flooding, though they have been installed too far up the stream to pick up this pollutant, which has changed its colour from the airport down to the sea. As the ecologists for the NZ Transport Agency have now discovered, (they played the issue down during the Board of Inquiry hearings), these waterways are host to rare native marine species and the frequent appearance of shag and heron in the Wharemauku bares witness to its fecundity. Responsibility for the care of our waterways lies ultimately with the regional council, though, it too appears to be sitting on its hands on this issue. DEREK SCHULZ Raumati Beach

Tell it like it is

I can’t let Gerry Cole get away with his attack on Nigel Wilson, our regional councillor. We need people like Nigel who are not afraid to tell it like it is. He is practicable, sensible and intelligent . . . I was [involved in the water meter petition] and no time did we make any claims about what may happen. What we did say was that we live in an area that backs onto a large mountain range where water is more than plentiful. It is the same mountains that

supply Wellington and Hutt Valley’s water, so why would we want water meters that are designed for countries that have little water? We asked for a referendum not against water meters, but whether the ratepayers wanted them or not. Gerry goes on to claim that many who signed the petition are unhappy with the claims made at the time. What claims, Gerry? And then he drops the real clanger about dams. He says dams and water meters go hand-in-hand as water-use rate has to be controlled from a dam supply and when we need a dam the meters are already in place. Funny that, I didn’t know that the Wellington area had water meters. Dams — yes. Water meters — no. RON BUTLER Paraparaumu Beach [abridged]

AND KITCHEN Kapiti’s Waterfront Bar and Kitchen stretches across the frontage of Raumati beach, its inviting upstairs decking recognised for catching sun during the day, before playing host to a regular evening sunset backdrop. An old favourite on the coast, which has seen the introduction of fresh new renovations over the past couple of years, Waterfront Bar is preparing for a busy next few months, as the sunny weather slowly shifts in. Included in the restaurant’s refurbishment is contemporary floor tiling in the bar, as well as a sophisticated behind-the-bar coffee zone, and creatively-infused backroom television spot.

Comfortable feel-good vibes also complement innovative beach-style décor, thanks to a relaxed couch layout in front of the bar. Managers Joe and Carey Player, who bring years of quality chefing and FOH experience to the facility, say the weather is already making way for the annual summer crowds who gather at the busy brunch, lunch and dinner spot. Warmer Crowd funding untested in NZ weather ‘ tempts ’ cyclists A new concept to New Zealand has been launched recently called Peer-to-peer lending or crowd funding. Peer-to-peer lending is an online platform whereby investors can lend money anonymously and borrowers can borrow money from anonymous investors for loans ranging from $1,000 to $35,000. The online platform facilitates the transaction and normally charges both parties a fee. Only one online platform has been

approved by the Financial Markets Authority so far. This type of scheme has been running previously in Europe and the United States and is untested here in New Zealand. With anything like this it carries risks for the investor looking for a higher rate of return than they may get from a bank. It does however give them variety and varying degrees of a hands-on approach to investing their money. The investor gets limited information on the borrower apart from a summary of their credit history and demographics. The investor can usually spread their investment across different types of loans but if a borrower or borrowers

If a borrower or borrowers default, there is no guarantee of getting your money back.

default, there is no guarantee of getting your money back. Conversely borrowers will need to be fairly stringently assessed and may be required to provide security such as a car. Borrowers still need to have a fairly clean credit history and thus may find obtaining a loan no easier than through the more conventional methods.

It seems an interesting concept and it may take time to get traction given the finance company collapses in recent years are still fresh in people’s mind. For borrowers I am not sure it will make getting loans any easier. For investors however it does provide variety for those wanting to be more hands on and willing to get a higher return for a higher risk. ■ For a free copy of our Home Buyer Guide contact our team seven days a week on 0800 000 517 or email craig@craigpope.co.nz for all your mortgage and insurance needs. The above article is general and is not specific to any person.

With the summer months not far away and many people in serious training for the round Lake Taupo cycle race, it seems like everyone is getting into cycling, and so they should. It’s a terrific form of exercise, easy on the joints, and means people are getting out in the fresh air exploring what the Kapiti Coast has to offer for people using pedal power. Living and working on the Kapiti Coast means people cycle to work and I know a few people that use pedal power to commute to Wellington. It’s great seeing children cycling to school, the fitness they build doing this will only help them later in life and may be make them want to continue to use their bike as a form of transport. If you’re new to cycling but want to give it a try, go to your local bike shop and talk to them about the options when buying a new bike. They can explain about mountain, road and hybrid bikes and which would best suit your needs. They will also give you a bike fit which means adjusting the handle bars and seat to make it fit perfectly

for your body. This is really important because a bad fitting bike could damage your knees, hips or give you lots of lower back pain. When starting out I always recommend cycling with a more experienced rider. That way you have someone to help you with a puncture and navigate traffic if need be. If you’re nervous of the road then stick to the Waikanae River or Queen Elizabeth Park until you get more confident.

Now’s a great time to learn about retirement village living. If you are considering a move into a retirement village, this is the best place to begin. At our upcoming seminar, you will be able to find out “What retirement village living is all about” and ask any questions about this important part of life. Our carefully selected panel consists of Graham Mowbray – Breaden McCardle Chubb Lawyers, Alan Edwards – Chief Executive Officer at Metlifecare, and one of our own residents.

Tips for newbies to get into cycling ★ Always wear bright coloured clothing so you are clearly visible to other road users. ★ Be prepared for the worst, spare tyre, pump, lots to drink and warm clothes. ★ Cycle with someone who knows what they’re doing. ★ Have a route in mind and don’t bite off more than you can chew. It’s not just getting out to a destination coffee shop it’s getting back as well. ★ Choose a time when there is less traffic on the road. Not rush hour.

What is involved in moving into a retirement village? What are the benefits of living in a retirement village? What is so good about Kapiti Village? What is an Occupation Right Agreement (ORA)?

Thursday 4th September 1.30pm - 3pm To reserve your place, please call 04 296 1790 by 1st September. 1 Henley Way, off Guildford Drive Paraparaumu www.metlifecare.co.nz

Finally: I can’t believe I have to mention this but please please, please wear a helmet. Apart from it being the law it is dangerous not to protect your head. It doesn’t matter if you’re travelling at 30kmh or zero ks an hour — if you fall off it will hurt and your head hitting the floor may cause a serious injury.

Event showcases seafood options DAVID HAXTON A whole blue moki served to each table was one of the many highlights of the Ocean to Table Kapiti Style event held at the Otaihanga Boating Club on Saturday. The event, part of Visa Wellington on a Plate, attracted a large number of people who enjoyed such food as kaimoana trifle, Waikanae crab dumplings, whitebait, smoked eel, scallops, oysters and Limoncello cake. There were various demonstrations ranging from how to smoke an eel, how to fillet a fish, how to sharpen a knife, how to cook mussels through to talks about local products including Limocello and a new product from the Kapiti Coffee Company. Local doctor and fish enthusiast Herman van Kradenburg gave a talk and said people were lucky to have such a wide variety and quality of fish available in New Zealand. “Also in Kapiti we are blessed with unique fishing opportunities.” “We have a marine reserve right on our doorstep which acts as a wonderful reservoir for fish to develop, grow and populate the surrounding area with goodquality angling and table fish.” He said when buying fish, it was important to know how fresh it was. “Go to a reputable fish monger first of all if you can’t catch your own. “Ask what is freshest of the day. “Don’t be misguided by the term fresh — anyone can put a

“Touch it and look for firm, shiny flesh which bounces back when you touch it. “Fish shouldn’t smell fishy — it should have a lovely clean smell.

“Eyes should be clear, not cloudy, and should bulge a bit. Sunken eyes is a sign of old fish. “Freshly-cut fish should be moist and shouldn’t be separating.

“Brown edges and spongy consistency is a sure sign that it has been frozen and defrosted.” A second Ocean to Table Kapiti Style event takes place at the same venue on Saturday.

Elder Person Cafe staff, patrons help school award made CLOE WILLETTS The 2014 Kapiti Elder Person of the Year Award took place yesterday afternoon, in an event shining the spotlight on the incredible efforts of nominees 65 years and older living on the Kapiti Coast. Drawn from the area from Paekakariki to Otaki, the four finalists were nominated by fellow members of the public, each having contributed significantly to the local community or nation during their lives. The awards lunch was set to include a combination of food platters, bubbles, and live music including singing from musician Noel Signal, 85, of Waikanae, courtesy of major sponsor Monteith’s Kapiti Junction. Around 80 excited guests attended the event, keen to see first-hand who would take home the honouree winning trophy crafted by Katie Brown of Katie Brown Glass. Beach FM’s and chair of the Kapiti Coast Older Person’s Council John Hayes was invited to MC the awards ceremony, which ran thanks to support from Elder Family Matters, and the Kapiti Coast Older Person’s Council. Other major sponsors on board were Heartland Bank, Beach FM, Coastlands, Precise Paint and Design, and Kapiti News. Nominations saw the inclusion of details surrounding nominees’ individual efforts in working towards their goals, and the number of hours committed to their work. It also included the length of their service, and the degree of difficulty in their achievements, as well as their commitment to personal development through participation in courses, forums, conventions, and community activities. “Each of the nominees are excellent in their areas, and will receive a certificate,” organisers said in the lead up to the event. “The overall winner will go forward as an entrant in the Senior New Zealander of the Year Award.” ■ To find out the results of yesterday’s 2014 Kapiti Elder Person of the Year Award, visit the Kapiti News Facebook page. Results will also be published in next week’s paper.

BACK TO SCHOOL: Burst Drive Thru Cafe employees, from left, Kelly Mulligan, Laura Davies, Angelina Mulligan and Mandy Bruce, dressed up as school pupils on Friday to raise money for Paraparaumu School, which had four classrooms and a library burnt down. The cafe, in Rimu Rd, Paraparaumu, generated $1190.50 for the school. Burst donated $500 and customers donated $690.50. “We also received five boxes of books and stationery donated by our customers, which I will give to the school today with a cheque,” cafe manager Angela Anderson said.

Greener neighbourhoods a winner CLOE WILLETTS The public discussed a range of innovative ideas for bettering local communities last Sunday, as part of the first round of Kapiti’s Greener Neighbourhoods project. Greener Neighbourhoods, an eightmonth project, sees groups of five or more households get together to take part in an initiative that promotes neighbourhood relationship building, increased community resilience, and sustainable living. The variety of ideas discussed by attendees included stream restoration, community land development, largescale composting, gardening bees, a beach clean and educational workshops regarding fruit tree pruning.

With the support and assistance of staff from the council, this year’s Greener Neighbourhoods will differ slightly from previous versions, Ka¯piti Coast’s Greenest Street and Ka¯piti Coast’s Greenest Neighbourhood, in the sense it is not a competition. Embracing the spirit of neighbourhoods, the groups involved are comprised predominantly of several streets encircling one block. Simon Calcinai from Waimeha Lagoon, Waikanae Beach, whose group recently gained permission for the first stage of a community orchard, drawing 90 local residents to the planting, said his neighbourhood is a different place since taking part in the project. One woman who spoke at the meeting, highlighted the benefits Greener Neighbourhoods has from a

hearing-impaired perspective. “She knew she would need help from others in case of a civil defence emergency, and wanted to know those people before then,” council’s sustainable communities co-ordinator Stacey Gasson said. Councillor Diane Amundsen said the project, which has seen 109 households take part in the different versions since 2010, has “proven to be a tried-and-true combination”. “For some of you, it will be the first time you have ever spoken to or even seen some of your neighbours, and now you know each other’s names,” Amundsen said during an opening speech. “Groups have surprised support staff with the ambition and impact of their projects.”

Tau Mai writer named Whakatane-based aspiring film and television writer Kelly Walker will be this year’s Tau Mai e Kapiti Writer in Residence. Kelly (Ngati Pukeko, Ngati Awa, Ngai Tai, Te Whanau-aApanui, Ngati Rangiwewehi, Ngati Porou, Tuwharetoa, Nga Puhi) will be funded by Te Waka Toi to spend eight weeks writing on Kapiti Island during September and October this year. Kelly has been writing comedy sketches for upcoming TV1 show Happy Hour. She also a short-film script under her belt — ‘Te Putorino. She was inspired to take her writing to the next step when she worked as a production assistant on 2014 feature film The Pa Boys

(written and directed by Himiona Grace). Kelly is currently focussing on on a children’s drama series and plans to use her time on Kapiti Island to work on her feature film script. The film is based on her own whanau. “My kuia was a tohunga matakite who lived on Motiti Island. “My koroua were members of B Company Maori Battalion.” The film isn’t anti-Christian, she says, but it tells a story of the impacts of colonisation and Christianity on Maori spiritual beliefs and values. “When Europeans first came to Aotearoa, Maori had no written language, they were deemed illiterate.

“But they could read. “They read the stars, they read the flight paths of birds, they read the moon, the tides, the dew on the leaves.” She says she will also compose traditional waiata for the film during her time on Kapiti Island. Kelly is the sixth Kapiti writer in residence and will head to the island in September to begin her two-month stay. The Tau mai e Kapiti Maori Writers’ Residency is funded by Te Waka Toi / Creative New Zealand and hosted by the Kaitiaki o Kapiti Trust. The residency aims to help emerging writers take their writing dreams and goals to the next level.

Town centre action

Draft concept ideas for the transformation of Waikanae town centre have generated another 220 comments with the feedback period open until Monday September 1. The latest comments were received during the recent open day attended by around 300, who came along, viewed the information and chatted with council representatives. Waikanae Community Board chairman Michael Scott says the open day was extremely well attended by a large cross section of people. “The whole day was very positive. “It was really interesting to see the majority of comments being made were on the ideas

for Mahara Place and how excited people were by some of these.” There were mixed comments on the idea of a shared space for vehicles and pedestrians in Mahara Place with overwhelming support for the lawn and play area ideas. Other comments mentioned adding a stage to Mahara place for performances, having more outdoor seating and encouraging market stalls within Mahara Place. Mr Scott says people seem to be accepting of the fact that this is a long term project but they also want some immediate action in Mahara Place. “I’d like to think we can do both.”

Walkover will include auction for painting First the first time ever, the annual walkover of the Otaki River will feature an auction of an original oil painting of one of the hidden gems of the river — Chrystall’s Bend lagoon. The painting was completed and donated by Levin artist Grace Goss who wanted to help Friends of the Otaki River raise funds for their on-going restoration of the river. She saw a photo of Chrystall’s lagoon in the Kapiti News last September and decided to turn it into a 900 x 600 mm acrylic painting. The newspaper photo was taken by Friends of the Otaki River member Cathy Strong. “Chrystall’s Lagoon is always picturesque, and this painting captures some of the multi-coloured beauty of it. “Many people don’t realise the lagoon is hidden up the

river and are delighted when they turn a corner on the track and meet this stunning sight,” Strong said. The painting will be auctioned during the lunch break of the annual tour of the river by members, stakeholders, and anyone of the public interested. The walkover is held on Wednesday September 10. Meet at the Greater Wellington depot on Riverbank Rd. Auctioneer Peter Jensen has agreed to accept telephone bids for Grace Goss’s painting by prior arrangement. Those interested in placing a prior bid for Chrystall’s Lagoon can email or ring secretary Trevor Wylie geminiservices@xtra.co.nz Tel 06 364 8918 prior to the auction day.

What’s On... Kiwifruits good enough to drag you away from TV Andrew London reviews Kapiti Playhouse’s latest play Kiwifruits Yes I know it’s cold and wet and Shortland Street is riveting at the moment, but if you go to one live theatre show this year (I’m talking to you, Kapiti!), make it this one. The Kapiti Playhouse’s current production of Carl Nixon and Craig Cooper’s adult fairytale Kiwifruits is a riot from start to finish. From the opening scene where narrator Fay Gay (Amandah La Whore) is coaching fellow drag queen Tatania (Shaun Taiaki) through her act lipsyncing to Goldfinger, to the ensemble piece at the end where the entire draggedup cast joins in on We Are Family, the pace never falters. The star of the show is the star of the show. Amandah La Whore’s performance is stunning. She is equally comfortable ad-libbing with the (on opening night anyway) enthusiastic and uninhibited audience as she is with the set script, and obviously relishes the role. The standard innuendo-based gay and gender-bender one-liners come thick and fast, delivered by Amanduh with impeccable comic timing that would leave Graham Norton struggling to keep up.

Despite having almost no experience in stage roles, Amanduh absolutely owned this show, her commanding personality and presence dominating every scene. It must be said, however, that her off-sider Tatania, played beautifully by Shaun Taiaki, pinched many a show-stopping moment for herself with her laconic straight delivery (not to mention muscly calves!). The duo spend their rare moments off-stage changing into ever more extravagant and elegant costumes… I’ll wager there isn’t a sequin left in the wild south of Levin. The dashing prince in this Cinderella tale also stood out. Sean Pickersgill, in the role of Ben Corona, took on a huge task with this unusually physical and demanding role, which required a couple of hilarious falling-over-drunk incidents, and a passable drag act of his own, in extremely high heels. Supporting roles were capably filled by Bruce Weir, (Ben’s father Rex), Lorraine Turner (Ben’s ‘Cinderella’ love interest Allison), Phoebe McDougall (deliciously nasty young lawyer) and Kelle Aspinall (Allison’s domineering Mum). Only the most dedicated prude would not leave this show smiling; the warmth and humour emanating from the stage is absolutely infectious, and director Liz Alpine and her crew are to be commended for producing such a delightful spectacle. Take sunglasses… too many sequins at short range can be hazardous.

Lots of fun for school fair A Fundraiser Fair for Paraparaumu School is taking place this Saturday August 30 from 10am-3pm at the Paraparaumu Domain, with entry a gold coin donation, or a plant for the school’s open garden. A range of family-friendly activities are planned for the day, including pony rides, face painting, bouncy castle, playstation car racing, and food and craft stalls. A non-stop musical line-up is set to entertain, thanks to performances from

bands Under The Sun, Bluesette, and The Retro Divas. Spin the wheel raffles will also run throughout the day, and offer prizes such as movie vouchers, bar tabs and photoshoot packages. If you wish to hold a stall on the day, contact Sharntelle on 022 393 5119. Stalls are $20, with 100 per cent of the participation fee going to Paraparaumu School, and all stallholders profits their own.

Rotary keeps support for Relay for Life The Rotary Club of Kapiti has once again made a commitment to support Relay for life early in the New Year. Speaking on this subject at a recent Rotary meeting, Rotarian Ken Milne described the beginnings of this idea to raise money for cancer worldwide. In May 1985, Dr Gordon Klatt, colorectal surgeon from Tacoma Washington State USA, decided to raise money to fight cancer in memory of a young man who had recently died of cancer, by walking or running for 24 hours at his local university athletics track. His initial effort raised US$27,000. Since then, this initiative has

grown exponentially, and spread throughout 22 countries, and has now raised in excess of $5 billion. Unfortunately, Dr Klatt died in August of this year from stomach cancer, but until the end he continued raising money for the cause. “The Kapiti event was an outstanding success last year, and walkers from all over the Kapiti District, representing many organisations and schools, participated in raising a substantial sum for cancer support in the local Kapiti community at the Paraparaumu Domain,” Dr Milne said. The next Kapiti Relay for Life event is in February 2015.

Family move sparks restaurant wars In The Hundred-Foot Journey Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary inge´nue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Filled with charm, it is both picturesque and elegant – the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, the Maison Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), gets wind of it. Her icy

Documentary sparks climate debate More than 150 people recently braved a cold, wet night to learn more about climate change. Climate change group Keep a Cool World, and Kapiti College’s eco group hosted a screening of the documentary Thin Ice: The inside story of climate change. It explores the science behind human-induced climate change, from the physics of the greenhouse effect to the records of earth’s climate in Antarctic ice cores. This was followed by a discussion chaired by Radio New Zealand’s Veronika Meduna (Our Changing World), in which panel members were asked what can be done to address climate change, individually and globally. The panel was made up of Dr James Renwick from Victoria University, Ashlee Gross from 350 Aotearoa, Paul Young from Generation Zero, Jake Roos who is climate change and energy advisor at council, and communications specialist Liana Stupples. Discussion focussed on the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions dramatically at all levels, from households to

Food Bank gets big help

Big win for couple

CLOE WILLETTS Paraparaumu’s Meadows Church Edge Youth ministry gave back to the community this month, through the donation of 100 plus non-perishable food and home necessity items to Kapiti Community Food Bank. The initiative was organised by Youth Pastor Grace White, who created a Food Bank Outreach night, to encourage the over 140 young people attending Edge Youth each Friday night to help others in the community. Delivered by Pastor Grace and Otaki Youth Pastor Spencer Nutsford last Wednesday, the collection of donated goods included canned fruit, spaghetti, cereals, laundry powder, and toilet paper. Kapiti Community Food Bank, a volunteer-led organisation that opened in 1999 and runs between Paekakariki and Waikanae, relies on a combination of donations, fundraising and grants to cover the annual cost of running the scheme, which sits at over $36,000. With the philosophy that no child should go hungry, Kapiti

Currently facing a shortfall of donated items, members of Kapiti Community Food Bank said “stocks of food in 2014 are disappearing faster than ever”, with regular contributors not

providing as much as in the past, “reflecting the fact people do not have as much to spare”. Kapiti Community Food Bank has drop-off foodbank boxes at Pak’n Save, New World and Countdown, and is located at 10 Magrath Ave, Paraparaumu Beach.

FUNERAL DIRECTORY

Memorialisation by Andrew Malcolm

Society has used Memorials in varying ways to honour life since time began. With about 80% cremation in this region, many people simply plan to scatter the ashes after cremation, but in the end most need a place to go, a special place to remember, and usually end up putting up a permanent memorial of some sort.

Incorporating Kaitawa Crematorium

Over 20 years ago the cremation wall at Paraparaumu Beach cemetery ran out of room and it was decided to place memorial plaques around an existing rose garden.

This idea caught on so quickly that within only a few months the garden plaques were full and a new garden was needed. All the cemeteries in the district now have gardens with plaques for people to either place the ashes or simply have a special place to come to. For more information about memorials please contact a Funeral Home listed who can refer you to a company that can help.

Kruzers spin it for school Several Kapiti Kruzers cycling club members and others took part in a three hour spin class in Coastlands Shoppingtown on Saturday to raise money for Paraparaumu School, which lost

Coastlands Shoppingtown centre manager Jan Forrest said. “This was a tremendous effort by the Kapiti Kruzers, who rode a spin class for three hours which is no mean feat and it was

a library and four classrooms to arson. “So far the Kapiti Kruzers have $4535 with more to come in, and from the collectors on the day the tally was $2700,”

all done for Paraparaumu School. “We also had many parents who came along and manned a cake stall and assisted with collecting on the day.

“There was a huge amount of acknowledgement by people who were here for what the school has been through. We certainly have got a great community spirit here in Kapiti.”

Sunday’s games trial for November internationals Several Black Sticks hockey players are taking part in a fixture at the Coastlands Kapiti Sports Turf at Mazengarb Reserve on Sunday. There will be two National Hockey League games featuring elite, national and international players. At 1pm, Capital Women will take on Central Women. These teams will feature Black Sticks Anita Punt, Anikawa Roberts and Michaela Curtis, as well as

international guest players Georgia Morgan, and Frederique de Klijn. At 3pm it’s the men’s turn, with Central Men versus Capital Men. This game will feature Black Stick Blair Hilton, playing for Capital, and international guest players Lucas Sevestre (Capital) and Cameron Joyce (Central). “We expect a huge crowd, as these are the only NHL games to be played in the Wellington region this year,” Coastlands

Kapiti Sports Turf and Pavilion general manager Sonja Williams said. “The pavilion will be open, food and drinks will be available. “It is a gold coin entry. “Mayor Ross Church will be in attendance, and other VIP’s are expected. “This is our practise run for the Black Sticks internationals in November, and Hockey NZ is coming to observe how we go.”

WELL DONE, BOYS

WOW: Paraparaumu junior rugby under 8s representative side won a huge tournament hosted by Rahui. There were teams from Hunterville to Wellington taking part. It was a big feat for these boys and their coach as the competition was hard. PHOTO: KAP180814SPLJUNIORS

Kapiti Hoop Club’s annual sporting exchange with the Wellington Chinese Sport and Cultural Group took place this month. This year it was Kapiti’s turn to go in to Wellington and play the group on their home courts. Players, families, coaches, managers, parents and supporters all travelled to Wellington for the event. The day got underway with games for the five and six-yearolds, eight and unders, 10 and unders, 12 and unders, and finished with a shared lunch. “Everyone had a great day of basketball and fun,” Kapiti Hoop Club director Angelo Robinson said. “While most of the scores on the day were either even or extremely close, the emphasis of the event was on everyone getting to play, everyone having a great time and a great family atmosphere. “One player in the eight and under team was heard saying ‘this is the best day of my life’. “A day of big smiles all round from players and coaches. “This event is always a fun fixture and the players really

look forward to it. “This event is held annually and has been held now for the past seven years, alternating

between home and away. “Next year we will be hosting the Wellington Chinese group here in Kapiti.”

Adams big draw at ball camp The New Zealand Basketball Academy held the Steven Funaki Adams Basketball Camp at the ASB Arena in Kilbirnie in Wellington this month.

“And what a turnout it was with over 350 student athletes attending this one-day camp,” Kapiti Hoop Club director Angelo Robinson said. “Special guests of honour from Steven Adams’ NBA team, Oklahoma City Thunder, general manager Sam Presti and assistant coach Mark Bryant, witnessed a sea of blue OKC shirts and were blown away by the players doing the haka for them and Adams.

“Several Kapiti players across all age groups attended the camp with a view to learning new skills to improve their game and the opportunity to meet Steven Adams, and all had a fantastic time. ‘‘A huge highlight was that all players who attended the camp received their own Oklahoma City t-shirt and Adams signed each one with each player on the day.”

PEAK OUTDOOR EDUCATION: Otaki College students on Mt Ruapehu, where they built and slept in snow caves last month.

Snow cave experience ClOE WILLETTS Otaki College Outdoor Education classes went on a joint excursion to Mt Ruapehu last month, a challenging trip that included building and sleeping in traditional snow caves. Beginning the trip with a walk through the snow, the group of senior students were taught the basics of self-arresting in an effort to provide them with the skills needed to save themselves during a fall downhill in the snow. “I found the self-arresting extremely scary because I’m not very confident going down a snow hill head first, backwards,” student Nicholas Su said. “I was very fatigued afterwards, since I don’t usually do those kinds of activities.” In a solid exertion that took three to four hours, Mr Su and his group helped build the first set of snow caves, which female students slept in for the first night, while their male counterparts spent the night in huts. “The girls came back at about 7.30 the

next morning, and said it was amazing but very wet and cold. “That got me panicking a little because I’m not really good with tight spaces, and I had a fear of the snow cave caving in on me.” Mr Su said despite his initial worry, the male students headed out to reshape the caves, before enduring the snowy overnight stay he described as “an amazing experience”. “Overnight, my supposedly waterproof bivvie bag didn’t really work, and I woke up with a wet back, bottom and feet. “Overall though, it was pretty warm and well-insulated.” Keen to return to the huts the following morning for a hot shower and breakfast, the boys did so, before busting down their snow caves in case future visitors entered them when they were not structurally sound. “This was the best school trip for me so far,” Mr Su said. “Outdoor Education is no doubt the most fun and outgoing subject.”

SHOWCASING KAPITI: Left to right, mayor Ross Church, council arts development officer Catherine Scollay, and Otaki MP Nathan Guy at the opening of Kapiti Artists: A Capital Show at the Parliamentary Gallery. PHOTO: KAP130814SPLPARLIAMENTARYGALLERY

Otaki MP Nathan Guy launched Kapiti Artists: A Capital Show at the Parliamentary Gallery. The exhibition features work from 41 Kapiti artists and is the first time the Coast’s artists have exhibited as one group in Wellington. Guy said the exhibition is a great opportunity to showcase the artistic talent that stems from the Kapiti region

in a high-profile location. The exhibition includes a diverse mix of painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, jewellery, mosaic, furniture, flute-making and mixed media. Open to the public, Kapiti Artists: A Capital Show runs to September 11 at the Parliamentary Gallery, which is located at 70/84 Bowen House, Lambton Quay.
