Here’s some good news for everyone who’s experienced a drought in their home due to lack of rain or an abundance of touristsRecently IDAAN received a grant from the National Government of $60 million for the treatment and improvement of water and sewage systems in the Bocas del Toro providence. Nine of the sixty million will solely benefit Isla Colon and expand to reach 8,000 inhabitants.

We can all agree that at its current capacity, supply does not meet demand. The expansion of the Water Treatment Plant located at the reservoir in Big Creek is set to begin January 2016.

The rest of the grant will fund sewage systems for Almirante and Changuinola, as they currently have a serious problem with the disposal of wastewater.

This grant is much needed by the Bocas region, and it will have a positive impact on so many lives and local businesses. The future of this little island is always looking up!

Buenas noticias para todos aquellos que han sufrido sequía en sus casas debido a la falta de lluvia o abundancia de turistas.

Recientemente, IDAAN recibió una subvención del gobierno nacional de 60 millones de dólares para el tratamiento y mejora de agua y del sistema de aguas residuales en la provincia de Bocas del Toro. Nueve de sesenta millones beneficiarán solamente a Isla Colón con una expansión para alcanzar 8,000 habitantes.

Todos estamos de acuerdo que en la capacidad actual la oferta no suple a la demanda. La expansión de la planta para el tratamiento del agua ubicada en el embalse de Big Creek se ha establecido para comenzar en enero de 2016.

El resto de la subvención se utilizará para el sistema de aguas residuales de Almirante y Changuinola, ya que actualmente están teniendo serios problemas con la eliminación de las mismas.

Esta subvención es muy necesitada por la región de Bocas y tendrá un impacto positivo en muchas vidas y negocios locales. El futuro de esta pequeña isla siempre es bueno.

One doesn’t have to be a fitness expert to know the benefits of dancing. And if you’re skeptical, just stop by Lissette’s Zumba class to see all of the smiling (and sweating) faces.

Haven’t been to a dance party in a while? Bring some sass and shake that…. Well I think you can guess where this is going. Latin women are globally recognized for their ability to dance. And it’s this kind of awe inspiring dancing you’ll find 3 days a week at Lissette’s Zumba class. This fun filled hour long class combines mixed dance that not only provides you with a great excuse to dance with friends but also an intense cardio workout.

Lissette has been dancing since the age of 16 when she enrolled in Cuba’s Nacional Dance Academy. After years of studying, she went on to be a professional dancer in the world famous cabaret, The Tropicana Club, in Havana, Cuba.

She along with many of her class’ attendees, have lost 20+ pounds AND learned some new moves for the dance floor.

Uno no tiene que ser un experto en salud física para saber cuáles son los beneficios de bailar. Y si no lo crees, pasa por la clase de Zumba de Lissette para ver todas las caras sonrientes (y sudadas). ¿No has ido a bailar en bastante tiempo? Olvida la vergüenza y muévelo… ya puedes adivinar hacia dónde va esto. Las mujeres latinas son reconocidas mundialmente por su habilidad de bailar. Y este es un tipo de baile que inspira 3 veces a la semana en las clases de zumba de Lissette. La diversión llena la clase de una hora y combina un baile mixto que no sólo te da una excusa para bailar con amigos sino también para hacer un ejercicio de cardio intenso.

Lissette baila desde los 16 años, cuando se inscribió en la Academia de Danza Nacional de Cuba. Después de varios años de estudio, se convirtió en una bailarina profesional en el famoso cabaret The Tropicana Club en La Habana, Cuba.

Ella, junto a muchos de los que partici-

CHILI AND GARLIC PLANTAINS RECIPE FROM: “WHACHA GONNA DO WITH PLANTAINS” BY: MARY BOONE HECKROTTE (AKA MARY CAMRYKA) While I’ve never seen a recipe for this particular way of preparing plantains, it’s our favorite for both a side dish and as a crowd-pleasing appetizer.

• Use ripe yellow-going-on-black plantains.

• Use one plantain per person you plan to serve. Peel the plantains and cut them in rounds about 3/4” thick.

• In a large mixing bowl, for each two plantains, stir together 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice, 1/2 tsp. garlic powder, and 1/2 tsp. chili powder. Let soak 10-15 minutes.

• Heat over medium-high heat enough olive oil in a skillet to float the slices. Drain plantains slices then put them in the hot oil, cooking on each side about 4 minutes or till lightly browned. Do not crowd the pan. Drain on paper towels and serve as a side dish or with toothpicks as an appetizer.

PLÁTANOS CON CHILE Y AJO RECETA DE: “QUÉ HARÁS CON PLÁTANOS” POR: MARY BOONE HECKROTTE (MARY CAMRYKA) Aunque nunca he visto una receta para esta particular forma de preparar los plátanos, es nuestra favorita como guarnición o aperitivo para grupos grandes.

• Use plátanos maduros amarillos casi negros • Use un plátano por cada comenzal. Pele los plátanos y córtelos en rodajas • Use un plátano por cada comenzal. Pele los plátanos y córtelos en rodajas de 2 centímetros.

• En un recipiente grande, por cada dos plátanos, mezcle 1/4 de taza de jugo de limón fresco, 1/2 cucharada de ajo en polvo, y 1/2 cucharada de chile en polvo. Deje remojar entre 10 y 15 minutos. www.TheBocasBreeze.com

THE BEAT OF A HEART

In biological terms, the heart is a muscle, a pump moving the vital materials of our blood throughout the body.

It beats about 3 billion times during the average lifetime. The heart, with its constant function and immense bodily responsibility, allows us to live.

The heart is also described in psychological terms, a broken heart, a healing heart, a forgiving heart, a loving heart.

Metaphorically, the heart can laugh, it can smile; it acts with and without reason.

So what happens when a person, a child, has a heart condition in a place where no medical care is available?

You could ask the mother of Roxanna, a young Nbobe girl from the remote village of Quebrada Sal in the archipelago of Bocas del Toro. Heartbreaking?

Absolutely. But for eight year old Roxanna, it was an undeviating matter of life or death.

While seeking a physical at a medical clinic held in her village, a medical student volunteering with the Floating Doctors noticed an abnormal beat in

Roxanna’s heart. Her mother explained that she grew tired very quickly while playing with the other children and complained of chest pains often.

The Floating Doctors, a medical non-profit serving the indigenous communities of Bocas, arranged an ultrasound of Roxanna’s heart at the National Children’s Hospital in David.

The diagnosis: pulmonary valve stenosis, a narrowing of the valve in the pulmonary artery that carries blood to the lungs. When children are very small this condition affects them less, but as they begin to enter puberty their bodies grow, and they require more blood.

If it goes untreated, there is a very high risk of sudden death. This condition also isolates children affected by it as they eventually lack any energy at all for playtime with others.

It was clear that Roxanna would need surgery in order to have an active long life. Over the course of nearly a year donations were raised and the right specialist was found for the procedure.

The Floating Doctors developed a partnership with Tom Ford of Fundacion de Obsequio de Vida that proved to be

instrumental in Roxanna’s case, as they host interventional cardiologists from many different specialties and countries including Ecuador, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Panama. Ten months after Roxanna’s diagnosis, the essential components they had all been waiting for finally fell into place and everyone proceeded as planned.

The surgeon was able to go through the femoral artery in Roxanna’s leg to correct the problem with her valve.

This is an excellent alternative considering open heart surgery is very risky.

The surgery was a great success, and Roxanna left the hospital with her mother just three days later. The last time Dr. Benjamin Labrot, Medical Director of the Floating Doctors, called to ask about Roxanna, her mother replied, “She’s out playing.”

Today, Roxanna is able to live a full life thanks to so many people who heard her story, thought of their loved ones, their own children and did everything they could to help.

Cuando los niños son muy pequeños, esta condición los afecta menos, pero cuando entran en la pubertad, sus cuerpos crecen y requieren más sangre. Si no se trata, hay un alto riesgo de muerte súbita. Esta condición también aísla a los niños afectados ya que eventualmente no tienen energía para jugar con otros.

Estaba claro que Roxanna necesitaba una operación para poder tener una vida activa y larga.

En el curso de un año, se juntaron donaciones y se encontró al especialista adecuado para el procedimiento. ECO FOOTPRINT BOCAS

Once again, volunteers have come together to benefit our islands. Thanks to the coordinating efforts of people who truly want to make a different Bocas is getting cleaner all the time. But this time, it’s competitive and each province has a chance to win! Twelve concerned citizens teamed up to compete in a contest held by Foundacion de Roba Morena, located in Panama City. Bocas’ competing project is called Bocas Eco Huella (Eco Footprint Bocas). The project consists of constructing garbage cans from recyclable materials. The first phase of the project produced 25 garbage cans made from plastic bottles that were placed in strategic areas in town. The second phase is to make and distribute 25 more. It takes roughly two hours and 80-100 plastic bottles to build one of the garbage cans.

Come out to the mini fair at the park March 14, to watch the evaluation for the competition.

BOCAS ECO HUELLA

Una vez más, voluntarios se han juntado para ayudar a nuestras islas. Gracias a los esfuerzos de la gente que realmente quiere hacer una diferencia, Bocas está cada vez más limpia. Pero esta vez, es competitivo y cada provincia tiene la oportunidad de ganar. Doce ciudadanos preocupados se unieron para competir en un concurso realizado por la Fundación de Roba Morena, ubicada en la ciudad de Panamá. El proyecto de Bocas se llama Bocas Eco Huella. El proyecto consiste en construir cestos de basura con materiales reciclados.

La primera fase del proyecto produjo 25 cestos con botellas de plástico que fueron colocados en puntos estratégicos. La segunda fase es hacer y distribuir 25 más. Toma aproximadamente dos horas y entre 80 y 100 botellas de plástico para construir uno de estos cestos de basura.

Ven a la mini feria en el parque el 14 de marzo para presenciar la evaluación de la competencia.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE AND THEN SOME

BY EMILY TALENTINO We’re probably all familiar with the expression that it takes a village to raise a child. Well here in Bocas, it takes a village and then some to raise a surfista. The local Ngobe children, most of which live in extreme poverty by westernized standards of living, do not have access to surfing as a result of many barriers including lack of money, limited transportation, and isolated location; factors that never even cross the minds of the many local and visiting surfers that take to the local breaks each day. But thanks to the efforts and collaboration of the Bocas community and some visiting surf pros, Give and Surf (www.giveandsurf. org) was able to launch the Surf Outreach Mentorship Program this January with the specific intention of providing middle school age students from the Ngobe communities of Bahia Roja with the opportunity to learn how to surf, to appreciate the beautiful

environment and amazing surf breaks that surround them, and to build relationships with each other and the surfer-mentors that volunteer to teach them.

The Surf Outreach Mentorship Program (SOMP) would not be possible without the support of our village and those visiting our hometown. With the massive New Year’s swell arrived the VISSLA surf team whose generous donation of gear and funds helped to jump start the organization’s efforts and SOMP. Give & Surf proudly hosted VISSLA who turned the organization’s volunteer home into a frat house full of broken boards, air mattresses, and the bare necessities needed for sleep and refueling in between surf sessions. Juan David Isaac and Mono Loco Surf School stepped up to provide instructional surf lessons, lend us boards, and help recruit volunteers.

Share the Stoke Foundation, a worldwide non-profit dedicated to giving boards to kids to keep them off the streets and in the water, donated boards. More than a dozen volunteers helped out on the first day of the program ranging from local, ex-pat surfing enthusiasts to travelers wanting to lend a hand, and even non-surfers just willing to take photos and document the surfing adventures of these young Ngobe

groms.

SOMP is just one of the many programs Give & Surf, a local non-profit organization committed to empowering the local indigenous population of Bocas del Toro through educational programs and community development projects, has launched since its establishment in 2011. The organization now serves over 150 Ngobe students, primarily from Bahia Roja and Bahia Honda on Bastimentos, each week in a variety of programs including preschool, summer school, English classes, and higher education scholarships. SOMP now has seven committed middle school students who hit the waves every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning. Undoubtedly, their learning and experience expands far beyond just surfing and shows them that we are truly one family all supporting each other and committed to providing a better future for each child in our village. And we have a strong feeling that our volunteer surfers are learning a few things too!

SE REQUIERE UN PUEBLO Y UN POCO MÁS

Probablemente, todos estamos familiarizados con la expresión se requiere de todo un pueblo para criar a un niño. Bueno, aquí en Bocas se requiere un pueblo y un poco más para criar a un surfista. Los niños locales ngobe, cuya mayoría vive en pobreza extrema según los estándares occidentales, no tienen acceso al surf debido a muchas barreras, incluyendo la falta de dinero, transporte limitado y una ubicación aislada; factores que nunca se les pasó por la mente a los tantos surfistas locales y visitantes que surfean todos los días. Pero gracias a los esfuerzos y la colaboración de la comunidad de Bocas y algunos surfistas profesionales visitantes, Give and Surf (www.giveandsurf.org) pudo lanzar un Programa de Compromiso de Enseñanza de Surf este enero con el específico objetivo de proveer a estudiantes de educación media de las comunidades ngoble de Bahía Roja

la oportunidad de aprender a surfear, a apreciar el medio ambiente y las maravillosas rompientes de surf que los rodea y a construir relaciones entre ellos y los mentores que como voluntarios les enseñan.

El Programa de Compromiso de Enseñanza de Surf (en inglés Surf Outreach Mentorship Program (SOMP)) no es posible sin la ayuda de nuestro pueblo y de aquellos que nos visitan. Con el masivo oleaje del Año Nuevo, llegó el equipo de surf VISSLA, cuya generosa donación de cosas y fondos ayudaron a dar comienzo a la organización y al programa. Give and Surf hospedó orgullosamente a VISSLA, quien convirtió a la organización en una casa de fraternidad llena de tablas rotas, colchones de aire y las necesidades básicas que se necesitan para dormir y reabastecerse entre sesiones de surf. Juan David Isaac y Mono Loco Surf School brindaron clases instructivas de surf, nos prestaron tablas y nos ayudaron a reclutar voluntarios. Share the Stoke Foundation, una fundación mundial sin fines de lucro, nos donó tablas para los niños para mantenerlos lejos de las calles y en el agua. Más de una docena de voluntarios nos ayudaron el primer día del programa, desde locales, expatriados, entusiastas del surf hasta visitantes, quienes nos dieron una mano y hasta algunos que no son surfistas pero que simplemente quisieron ayudar tomando fotos y documentando las aventuras de surf de estos jóvenes ngobe.

SOMP es uno de los tantos programas de Give & Surf, una organización local sin fines de lucro comprometida a fortalecer la población indígena local de Bocas del Toro a través de programas educativos y proyectos de desarrollo comunita-

rio y se ha lanzado en el 2011. La organización sirve ahora a más de 150 estudiantes ngobe, principalmente de Bahía Roja y Bahía Honda en Bastimentos, cada semana en una variedad de programas que incluyen pre-escolar, clases de verano, clases de inglés y becas para una mejor educación. SOMP tiene siete estudiantes de secundaria comprometidos que saltan las olas todos los lunes, miércoles y viernes a la mañana. Sin duda, su aprendizaje y experiencia se expande más allá de sólo surfear y les muestra que somos

una familia que nos apoyamos unos a los otros y que estamos comprometidos a brindar un futuro mejor a cada niño. Tenemos un gran presentimiento que nuestros surfistas voluntarios también aprenderán un par de cosas.

Far from the spiraling arms of these northern storms Bocas is a welcome site for cruisers and their insurance policies. Yet with influx comes a need for amenities and services for the boats and their crews.

oper Courtney Parks. This facility has been a long time in the making and was conceived around the same time Bocas Yacht Club and Marina came to fruition. Courtney spent a vast amount of time bringing this facility to operational level and his experience in the cruising world shows in every aspect.

The next closest boat yard to Bocas Del Toro is in Colon and then on to Cartagena, Columbia, which is one of the main reasons Bocas Yacht Services (BYS) was established. Now, if

you are anchored in the archipelago or tied up at one of the marinas and are in distress or just need a quick haul bottom job you can make the easy run over to Almirante. Unlike other yards, BYS opens its doors to anyone who desires to do the work him or herself. Let’s be honest, most cruisers are pretty savvy, hands on type of personalities, so why pay someone else to do the work you can do yourself. Bocas Yacht Services is a full service yard with a 60-ton travel lift, 15-ton mobile lift with telescopic arm and all the frills needed to service your boat while it is out of the water. The facility has electricity, water, shower/bath and numerous small storage units.

In the near future, there are plans to build two small studio apartments for people to stay while working on their boats. Until that time, Almirante has three economical hotels that are very comfortable if you choose not to travel back and forth between the yard and Isla Colon. There are several great options if you need a bite to eat in town and I recommend Tia Delisiosa on the main corner or La Cabana at the ferry dock. At first sight, Almirante might not appear inviting, but let me reassure you it is a beautiful little town in so many ways. Though as with most port towns, there are spots better left untraveled at night and keeping your whit about you at all times is always a safe bet. During my time there working on the yard I had the pleasure of meeting many great and truly warm people. It is best not to judge a book by its cover and the

small port town of Almirante is no exception to the rule. Never the less, BYS knows that your boat is your life, so the facility is fenced, lighted, and guarded 24 hours a day and beware of Chocolate, the Pit-Bull!

If you have a boat and are in the area long-term or just passing through, stop by BYS and talk to yard manager Carl Meredith or Courtney as either would be happy to share more information. You can hop on a water taxi for the beautiful 30-minute ride over to the main land and have a look at this world-class boat yard. Once in Almirante, grab a cab and direct them to the Astillero/Boat Yard or call in advance (which is recommended and use the established drivers) for a look around.

While over there you might as well take advantage of cheaper groceries or head up to Changinola and treat yourself to MacDonald’s. No matter what your yacht, large panga or fishing boat needs, Bocas Yacht Services has it all!
