A Master Watchmaker & His Art Michael Clerizo An original and sensitive biography of the most important watchmaker of the 20th and early 21st century George Daniels (1926–2011) was born into a poor family and endured a childhood of parental neglect and abuse, yet rose to become a renowned horological artist who created exquisite watches. Daniels’s bulldog spirit is present on every page but especially in the chapters covering the story of his most significant invention: the co-axial escapement. The unflinching belief Daniels had in the superiority of the co-axial sustained him through nearly twenty years of ridicule and rejection before the escapement was adopted by Omega, one of the most famous Swiss watch brands. In his lifetime, Daniels produced only twenty-five watches. When brought together for a retrospective exhibition in 2006 at Sotheby’s London, they were estimated to have a combined value of over £5,000,000. This book was produced with the close collaboration of Daniels. Brilliant colour photography reveals his precious watches in minute detail. The book also features previously unseen archival imagery, including Daniels’s own photographs and sketches.
