More than two dozen teams turn out for Great Grape Stomp in G’view

GRANDVIEW - Twentyfive teams of three turned out to try their feet in YVCC’s annual Grape Stomp in Grandview.

The Grape Stomp was see “Grape stomp” back page resurrected by Grandview five years ago after the annual event ended in the 1990’s.

This year’s Grape Stomp drew 25 teams in four categories to the event.

Lopez formally arraigned on second degree murder charge The man the Yakima County Prosecutor’s Office believes is responsible for the Aug. 24 death of 2-yearold Benjamin Miron of Sunnyside was arraigned last Friday.

Mabton Council meets to come up with city priorities

MABTON – More playground equipment for the city parks, green technology and 24/7 police coverage are just some of the priorities the Mabton City Council discussed this past Friday at a council retreat held in Mabton.

The setting of goals is something the council has wanted to do for some time.

Several goals were listed by council members and they will be prioritized at a later date.

Everything was on the table. Mabton Councilman Mario Martinez told the council the goals don’t have to be

reachable right now, but listing them will give the council something to work toward.

“Are we going to be progressive or are we going to stick with the status quo,” Martinez asked his fellow council members.

He told the council that it is them who are responsible for the improvement of Mabton.

“We’ve lost our vitality,” he said. “It’s our job to replenish it for Mabton.”

He said the city’s policies must focus on quality of life issues, such as crime-free housing. Instead of taking a wait-and-see approach and then playing catch-up, he advocated pioneering certain approaches and being pro-

Silent salute This past Saturday flags filled downtown Sunnyside in remembrance of the 9/11 terrorist attacks nine years ago. Flags were also lowered to half-mast at many locations around town in honor of the thousands who died in the attack.

Firemen extinguish car fire Just before 1:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, the Sunnyside Fire Department raced to SLI Road and SR 241 after receiving a report of a vehicle fire in the vicinity. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.

Another fire call came into the Sunnyside Fire Department Saturday, Sept. 11, at 10:47 p.m. The caller reported a shed fire in the 100 block of Parkland Drive, but the fire had been put out before their arrival.

A 2:30 p.m. automatic alarm sent firefighters to the 300 block of North Sixth Street on Thursday, Sept. 9. The alarm was discovered to be a false call.

Firefighters also investigated a gas smell in the 1700 block of Sheller Road on Sunday, Sept. 12. The call reporting the smell came in just after 9 a.m.

Since Thursday, Sept. 9, the Sunnyside Fire Department has also responded to nine aid calls which included the transportation of five patients to the local hospital. The department also transferred three patients to other health care facilities.

To attract more people to Mabton the council spoke about coming up with a theme, much like Leavenworth or Toppenish has. The recent Community Days was a big hit and the council wanted to

see the event continued and expanded.

The parks are a big issue with council, as well.

Suggestions for improvements included playground equipment, picnic tables and barbecue grills.

For emergency services the council’s number one priority

is 24/7 police coverage. The council also discussed adding security cameras in town and hiring a full-time fire chief.

Communication and accountability is also high on the council’s list. It was suggested that better communication between Mabton citizens and city employees be improved.

The expenditures for the city should be organized around programs and the objectives of the council. It is also important, he told the council, to provide easy to understand information to the community, so people can see where the money is coming from and where it is going.

The council listed several objectives, such as the appearance of the city, its services, arts & culture, parks & recreation, emergency services, economic development and communication and accountability.

They would like to see the police department and city hall painted. City hall is not energy efficient and the council suggested new doors, windows and carpets. Graffiti abatement is also a big concern for the council and the majority thought it should be the responsibility of the city to clean it up.

the tire. That caused the vehicle to leave the roadway, at about mile post 92. The Chevy ended up rolling, coming to rest upright on all four tires.

Shots fired at vehicle in Sunnyside, one injured Sunnyside police are currently looking for a 1993 blue Nissan Qwest van with a Washington license plate number of 824RXC in connection with a report of shots fired in the 400 block of Cemetery Road this past Friday night.

Police say a four-door sedan was parked on the south side of T&M Market in Sunnyside when the van allegedly pulled into the parking lot. The driver of the van reversed out of the parking lot and then a male occupant exited the van and approached the sedan, where police say he fired two shots from a shotgun at the

driver’s side of the sedan, injuring the driver.

The suspect jumped back in the van and took off. Two of the four occupants of the sedan fled on foot and the other two went to a local hospital, where the victim was treated and released.

A motive for the incident has yet to be determined but police say some of the individuals involved are known to have prior gang involvement. Sunnyside detectives are continuing to investigate the incident and are asking the public to call 836-6200 with any information.

Fraud, vandalism reported to Grandview police officers GRANDVIEW – Fraud in the form of a forgery was reported this past Friday when a check was altered, then cashed fraudulently in Grandview at a business in the 200 block of West Second Street.

The forged check presented to the business was from a theft that had previously been filed with the Yakima County Sheriff’s SUNDAYoffice.

Police are requesting charges against Manuel Barron for eluding, operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock, hit and run, resisting arrest, making false or misleading statements to the police, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Yakima County Sheriff’s deputies investigated reports of two thefts and one burglary since last Friday.

A theft was reported in the 200 block of Hornby Road near Grandview at 11:36 a.m. on Friday. A check was stolen from the mail.

At 8:35 a.m. this past Friday a theft was reported from the 1300 block of North Outlook

and the 1100 block of East Edison Avenue.

Agreement with ‘Prize Patrol’ firm intended to clear the air about odds of winning If dreams of instant riches have you buying stacks of magazines in the hope that the Prize Patrol will soon knock on your door, you may be disheartened to know that the only thing you’ve gained over other prize contestants is some reading material.

Joining with more than 30 of his colleagues across the country, Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna this week announced a new agreement with a company famous for its sweepstakes promotions, Publishers Clearing House.

“Consumers are won over by shiny envelopes with irresistible announcements that they might already be winners,” McKenna said.

“Among other consumer protections, today’s agreement requires Publishers Clearing House to make it clear that signing up for magazine subscriptions won’t increase your chances of winning.”

In fact, the estimated odds of winning a $10 million prize in the latest Publishers Clearing House giveaway are one in 1.75 billion, whether

Those practices included promotional materials designed to mislead consumers into believing that purchases would increase their odds of winning.

A recent investigation by state attorney general offices across the country raised concerns that Publishers Clearing House was not fully comply-

ing with prior agreements and that consumers could still be confused by the nature and language of some of the company’s sweepstakes mailings.

The new settlement includes stronger language and new conditions to help ensure consumers will receive appropriate warnings.

Publishers Clearing House will contact customers, in-

cluding seniors, who spend significant amounts on magazine orders. Those customers will be better educated about how the sweepstakes actually work.

Customers who spent $1,000 or more in any calendar year will receive a letter alerting them the majority of Publishers Clearing House winners did not submit an order with their winning entry.

The company also agrees to pay $3.5 million to cover of Corrections, the Yakima the cost of the investigation.

County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol participated in the extra emphasis patrols. The Yakima County Target Zero Traffic Safety Task Force also supported the effort. The extra patrols were funded by a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

Impaired driving is not an accident - it’s an epidemic of deliberate disregard for human life and is the leading cause of traffic deaths in Washington state, say law enforcement officials.

During 2009, impaired drivers killed more than half of the 491 people who died on the state’s roadways.

Reynoso sixth overall at Ellensburg Invitational ELLENSBURG – Sunnyside’s Juan Reynoso opened the 2010 fall cross-country season in fine fashion last Saturday. The SHS junior scored a sixth-place finish from a field of 117 varsity runners at the Ellensburg Invitational.

Reynoso cracked the 13-minute mark in the 2.35-mile race, one of only 17 harriers to do so, with his clocking of 12:22.

Sunnyside Coach George Paulus said the sixth-place finish by Reynoso was four spots better than where the harrier finished at last year’s Ellensburg invite.

“Going in we figured he’d be somewhere in the top 10 this year,” said Paulus. “Juan is a pretty strong runner.”

Reynoso was poised for a top 5 finish last Saturday, but got chased down by Liston Idler of Ellensburg in the final stages of the race. Only one second ended up separating the two runners.

Two runners, incredibly, hit the finish line in under 12 minutes.

Aaron Nelson and J.P. Wolpert, both of Walla Walla, placed first and second, respectively, with clockings of 11:48 and 11:53.

Despite the 1-2 finish by the Blue Devils, Walla Walla had to settle for second-place honors in the boys team scoring. The host Ellensburg Bulldogs, led by the third-place finishing Jeffrey Ott (12:15) and the fifth-place finishing Idler (12:21), scored an invite low 43 points.

Sunnyside’s boys claimed a sixthplace finish in the team scoring with 156 points. A total of 15 schools were able to field at least five male runners, required to register a team score.

Reynoso wasn’t the only Grizzly to hit the finish line in under 13 minutes. Teammate Nathan Gonzalez, also a junior, recorded a time of 12:58, good for 16th place honors overall.

Rounding out the scoring for the Grizzly boys in the varsity race

were junior Omar Cantu, 22nd with a clocking of 13:16; senior Jaime Garcia, 58th with a clocking of 14:06; and junior Anthony Garcia, 62nd with a clocking of 14:14.

Also competing for Sunnyside in the boys varsity race were senior Cee Soto, 69th in 14:19; and junior Emmanuel Torres, 73rd in 14:26.

The Grandview High School boys cross-country team also competed at Ellensburg on Saturday, placing 14th in the team scoring with 410 points.

The Greyhounds’ top performer was senior Javier Neri. He placed 28th overall with a clocking of 13:35. No other Grandview runner finished in the top 50.

Lady ‘Hounds 8th at SunDome tourney

YAKIMA – It was a day of ups and downs for the Grandview High School Lady Greyhound volleyball team during the SunDome Invitational staged this past Saturday.

Grandview opened with three straight victories in the abbreviated best of three setup. After that, though, the Lady Greyhounds volleyball team lost their last two matches of the day to finish the invite at 3-2.

Even so, that record was good enough for Grandview

to claim eighth-place honors in Saturday’s field of nearly 40 teams.

After defeating Davis 2510, 25-5 and Christian Life 25-15, 25-22, Grandview swept North Kitsap 25-22, 22-11.

Grandview then lost a pair of three-game heartbreakers to Kings, 25-14, 22-25, 1510; and Castle Rock, 22-25, 27-25, 15-13.

“We played pretty well at times, but we have some things to work on,” said Grandview Coach John La Fever.

With league play start-

ing this week, he noted it was especially helpful for Grandview to get some experience in close matches at the SunDome.

“It shows us some things we might need to work on,” La Fever said. “A good close game like that gives us information on tendencies, areas where we could be stronger.”

With that said, Grandview showed plenty of team strength and balance Saturday, with five players finishing in double figures for kills.

The Lady Greyhounds were led by freshman Taylor Hall’s 22 kills, followed by

21 from Mikaela Esponiza.

Grandview teammates Haley Smasne and Adriana Ramos both had 18 kills, and Payton Parrish chipped in 11 kills.

Kaitee Eucker recorded nine kills for Grandview, while Ramos pounded 15 blocks.

Gabby Sauve delivered 35 service points for the Lady Greyhounds.

Grandview returns to action tomorrow, Tuesday, at home against East Valley.

Bickleton goes 2-3 at SunDome Invitational zby Corey Russell

YAKIMA – The Bickleton volleyball team used last Friday’s SunDome Invite to strengthen team spirit and compete against some teams the Pirates likely won’t see again.

“It was a good experience,” Bickleton Coach Joelle Patterson said of Friday’s tournament. “It helped bring the girls together. It helped to build trust.”

Bickleton went 1-2 in pool play where thezy finished in third place. The Lady Pirates first lost to Newport High School, but rallied to beat

Three Rivers High School in their second match of the day.

Bickleton then lost to Friday Harbor High School.

“All of the games were really close,” Patterson said.

No game scores were available from Patterson. She said she had to turn in all of her stats to tournament officials and didn’t receive them back.

After going 1-2 in pool play Bickleton was put into a bracket with other third place teams. This pitted them against Evergreen Lutheran High School, which the Lady Pirates dispatched in straight sets.

This set up a semi-final match with Mabton High School. The Lady Pirates lost the first game but came back to win the second, forcing a third and deciding set. The Vikings were able to squeak

Patterson said her team started the tournament slow but eventually played themselves out of their funk. She singled out her young players, eighth grader Lindsey Brown, freshman Kelsey Spalding and sophomore Lindsey Brown, for their play.

was crisp and each good pass resulted in a good hit.

“Our serving was good for the most part, but it did leave us in some games,” she said.

She blamed the losses on her team not moving their feet enough and mistakes the young Lady Pirates made.

Lady Knights go 1-3 at Columbia-Burbank Invitational BURBANK – Facing some top notch competition, coupled with experimenting with a lot of different rotations, resulted in a 1-3 record for the Sunnyside Christian High School girls volleyball team at last Saturday’s ColumbiaBurbank Invitational.

“We played good volleyball all day against some good teams,” said Sunnyside Christian Coach Stephanie Greydanus.

“I was putting girls in spots that they haven’t played in before.

“The team continues to fight for games and never give up,” Greydanus said.

The Lady Knights opened the tourney with a 2-1 loss to the host Coyotes.

Columbia-Burbank won the opening set by a 25-20 score, but Sunnyside Christian recovered and squared the match at one-all with a 25-15 victory in game two. The rubber game went the Coyotes’ way, 15-10.

Sunnyside Christian chalked up its lone win of the tournament against its second foe, the Ki-Be Bears. The Lady Knights prevailed 2518, 26-24.

The Kittitas Coyotes proved to be too strong for Sunnyside Christian in the next match of

the day. Kittitas won handily by scores of 25-11, 25-10.

The SCHS Lady Knights closed out Saturday’s action with a three-set loss to the Royal City Knights. Royal City came out on top in the opening contest, 25-15, but Sunnyside Christian claimed a 25-22 victory in game two.

Royal City won the deciding game of the match by a 15-12 count.

Sunnyside Christian’s leaders at the net in the one-day tourney included Maddy Wavrin with 15 kills and eight blocks, Brittany Broersma with seven kills and 10 blocks, and Janelle

DeGroot with nine kills and three blocks.

Serving-wise, DeGroot had the best numbers for Sunnyside Christian. She successfully put 34-of-36 serves into play. DeGroot, too, led the Lady Knights with 30 perfect passes and eight defensive digs.

Sunnyside Christian’s assist leaders were Lady Knight setters Danika DeGroot and Alyssa Haak with 11 and nine, respectively.

The Lady Knights’ home opener of the 2010 season is this coming Tuesday night against visiting Tri-Cities Prep.

Sunnyside runner entered. She claimed a 17th place finish with a clocking of 16:06. The winner was Walla Walla’s Rachel Nelson (14:34).

“I’m happy with how Jocelyn performed,” said Paulus. “She might have wanted a little better finish, though.”

Grandview’s lone entry in the varsity race was sophomore Araceli Garcia. She placed 65th from the 88girl field in a time of 19:17.

Sunnyside’s cross-country team is scheduled to compete in Moses Lake this Tuesday, Sept. 14. The Grandview harriers are out of action until Sept. 23, when they are scheduled to host Selah and Ephrata in the CWAC league opener.

Work cut out for BHS runners COWICHE - Bickleton’s cross country runners made a show at Highland High School’s jamboree in Cowiche this past Friday, Sept. 10.

Three of Bickleton’s four runners took to the two-mile course against 90 other competitors.

Coach Darrell Lang conceded that competition was steep at their season opening event, but he is satisfied with the results.

“We’ve still got a long ways to go,” Lang stated, “and our work cut out for us.”

Making his high school cross country debut was eighth grader Brandon Berk. Berk finished the course in 12:47, coming in 42nd out of 51 runners in the boy’s division.

Sophomore Joshua Cummings came in at 14:11, finishing in 49th place.

Senior Christina Wilson, meanwhile, had a strong two-mile run, finishing in 13:55. Wilson, who made an appearance at State last year, finished against her 34 competitors in sixth place.

Wilson is the only Bickleton senior running this year.

There were lots of positives that came out of last Friday’s game for the Grizzlies.

Chief among them was a pile of offensive yardage.

Sunnyside tallied 223 yards on the ground, thanks to a game-high 149-yard effort by junior Steven Monterrey.

The Grizzlies also netted 134 yards through the air on the 11-of-24 passing of senior Andrew Daley.

Davis grabbed the early lead Friday when Austin Wagner, the Pirates’ leading rusher on the night with 85 yards on nine carries, broke off a 16-yarder to pay dirt on the opening drive of the game. The PAT by Christian Sheed put the visitors up 7-0.

The Pirates, guessing that Sunnyside’s defensive alignment would be set up to shut down their aerial attack, went with all running plays on that

opening drive.

Sunnyside’s coaching staff quickly put the defensive unit back into its regular 4-4, cover 3 alignment, which relies on the speed of the Grizzlies to control all aspects of the opposing offense.

After the TD by Wagner, Sunnyside opened its first drive of the night and utilized the legs of Monterrey to advance the ball deep into Pirate territory. Monterrey’s biggest gain on the Grizzlies’ opening drive was a 25-yard scamper.

The Grizzlies capped off the march with a 10-yard TD toss from Daley to Salmeron on a slant across the middle.

Knights earn first victory of season

LYLE - The Sunnyside Christian Knights eight-man football team took control early and never let up in a 28-6 win over Kings Way Christian this past Friday at Lyle High School.

Quarterback Steven Bosma threw

for one touchdown and ran for another to stake the Knights to a 14-6 first quarter lead. The touchdown toss went for 26 yards to Steven Broersma, which was followed by a two-point conversion on a run by Jackson Haak.

It was Haak again in the second quarter, plunging into the end zone

from one yard out to put Sunnyside Christian up 20-6 less than three minutes before the half.

That remained the score until the fourth quarter, when Haak again struck for a touchdown run, this time from four yards out. The touchdown was followed by a twopoint conversion by John den Hoed

to close out scoring for the game.

Sunnyside Christian had the game well in hand and Coach Ray Hernandez said that allowed him to give extra playing time to some of his younger players. “We put the young kids in for the remainder of the game,” he said.

It marked the second consecu-

tive year for Sunnyside Christian to get a victory against Kings Way Christian, and Hernandez said his defense stepped up its play.

Defense keeps Mabton gridders close against Spartans

GRANGER - Despite injuries and penalties hampering his players as they learn a new offense, Mabton High School Coach Shane Thorson is pleased with the progress they have made with only three weeks of practice under their belts. ‘”We are matching the teams we are playing yard for yard and we have been running the ball a majority of the time,” says coach

Thorson. “We have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot with costly mistakes, though.”

Friday night in Granger the Vikings marched up and down the field, but due to the growing pains of learning a new offense came up short in their efforts with a 18-0 loss to the Spartans.

Running back Noe Gutierrez once again was the work horse for the Vikings as he piled up 148 yards on 27 carries. Opening up the playbook, Mabton quarterback Josh

Strickland was 7-for-9 for 78 yards passing with no interceptions after attempting no passes the week before. Also picking up yardage for the Vikings was Fabian Ruiz, who ran the ball five times for 18 yards.

Defensively, coach Thorson believes the Vikings are among one of the better units in their league, and they kept the Spartans out of the end zone in the second half.

Granger did all their damage in the first half with big plays and only one sustained drive as

the Mabton defense stiffened.

Coach Thorson also stated that the team needs to work on finishing a drive so they can put points on the board and to stop beating themselves with mistakes.

girls prep soccer Lady Vikings fall 2-0 to Warden WARDEN – The Mabton Lady Vikings soccer team played stalwart defense but still fell short 2-0 to Warden this past Saturday.

“We were very competitive from the very beginning,” said Mabton Coach Lucia Tovar.

The Cougars broke through in the 20th minute for a goal, but were held at bay nearly the rest of the way before tacking on an insurance goal in the 76th minute.

The Lady Vikings had their chances on offense, with six shot attempts on goal.

Mabton returns to action tomorrow, Tuesday, in a non-league home match against Granger.

Osorio scores goal for Sunnyside in 6-1 decision to Eastmont Wildcats

EAST WENATCHEE – The good news is that the Sunnyside High School girls varsity soccer team was able to score on 3A powerhouse Eastmont.

The bad news is that it wasn’t enough in a 6-1 road loss to the Wildcats this past Saturday.

After Eastmont grabbed an early 1-0 lead, Sunnyside’s Karla Osorio drilled in a goal after collecting a free kick.

Though only 4-9, Osorio has a strong leg and Coach Sylvia Villagrana said that caught Eastmont defenders off balance.

“She has a hard kick and the keeper did not expect it,” Villagrana said. “She (the Eastmont keeper) fumbled it because it spun through her hands.”

It was Osorio’s second goal in as many matches this season.

The score came midway through the first half, and the Lady Grizzlies kept things close the rest of the half,

trailing just 2-1 at the break.

But Eastmont removed all doubt in the second half, as Villagrana said her squad struggled to keep up with the Wildcats’ quickness.

“One of the things that hurt us was Eastmont’s team speed,” she said. “It took my girls awhile to react.”

On defense, Sunnyside keeper Perla Ponce kept busy with 13 saves.

The Lady Grizzlies make their home debut tomorrow, Tuesday,

with a league match against Hanford starting at 7 p.m.

Villagrana says Sunnyside (0-1, 1-1) will have its work cut out for it against the Falcons tomorrow.

“We know Hanford has the same speed as Eastmont and we need to be ready to deal with it,” she said.

“We have six freshmen and four sophomores on varsity and we just have to learn to get in the rhythm, get to the ball quicker.”

6-1 loss leaves Lady Greyhounds eager for win

GRANDVIEW - The Grandview Lady Greyhounds battled against East Valley’s Red Devils this past Saturday, Sept. 11, but came away with a 6-1 loss.

The game started promising for the Lady Greyhounds. In the first 20 seconds of the game, center midfielder Oryan Matheny

picked off a pass from the Red Devils.

Matheny then passed to forward Karissa Trinidad who scored the team’s only goal for the game.

“We woke a sleeping giant,” enthused Coach Anne Holden.

But the team’s strong opening gave way to the Red Devils’ technical abilities, Holden stated.

East Valley had 12 direct shots throughout the 80-minute game. Grandview’s goal keepers, Jamila Schasser and Karen Ramirez, saved six of those direct shots.

Grandview, on the other hand, made eight direct shots, scoring once.

“We created a lot of opportunities to score,” stated Holden. “We just need to follow through on the opportunities.”

Holden is also looking to tighten up the back to limit the other team’s scoring opportunities.

“We know where our weaknesses are and what we need to work on.”

The Lady Greyhounds head to Toppenish on Tuesday, Sept. 14, where the team is hopeful they’ll capture their season’s first win.

The Pirates’ ensuing drive stalled at its own 48, which was quickly followed by a three-and-out series by the Grizzlies. A short punt to the Davis 47-yard line put the Pirates at mid-field, their first big break of the game. Their fortunes turned, however, when on the second play from scrimmage a Grizzly defender knocked the pigskin loose from a ball carrier and a Sunnyside teammate pounced on it near the midfield stripe.

Sunnyside’s offensive unit took full advantage, as Daley went to the air and found Monterrey for a first-down, who then took a hand-off from the Grizzly QB and busted a run all the way to the Davis 1-yard line. Daley tried

senior Ryan Hernandez to regain the lead at 19-14. The two-point conversion pass, however, was off the mark.

Wagner tacked on his second TD run of the night two possessions later, with 4:20 remaining in the third quarter, to put the Pirates back on top, 21-19.

After a couple of miscues on the part of the Sunnyside offense, Davis stretched its lead to 28-19 when Damon Lybeck hauled in a 10-pass TD pass from Wright.

With just over 11 minutes left in the game and needing two scores, the Grizzlies could have easily folded.

Instead, Sunnyside kept plugging away and the grit the Grizzlies displayed paid off when Daley lofted a 6-yard TD toss to Salmeron.

Monterrey added on a two-

point conversion run to draw the Grizzlies within 28-27 with 1:20 showing on the clock.

Unfortunately for the home team it was as close as the Grizzlies would get, as the ensuing on-sides kick went directly into the hands of a Davis player.

Marro said turnovers aside, “…I was pleased we kept playing when we were down by nine.”

The Sunnyside coach singled out his QB, praising him for spreading the ball around. “(Daley) is off to a good start this season. In just two games he’s already thrown for 278 yards and five touchdowns, and doesn’t have an interception,” said Marro.

Monterrey, too, has put up impressive numbers early on, especially considering he’s

been moved to the featured ace back slot in Sunnyside’s wing-T offensive spread.

In looking ahead to this coming Friday night, when the Grizzlies will host the Southridge Suns in the CBBN league opener for both clubs, Marro anticipates a hard fought affair.

The Suns were the preseason pick of many to finish atop the eight-team 3A Columbia Basin league.

Southridge is off to a slow start, though, having gone 0-2 in non-league action against the likes of Walla Walla and Hermiston.

REVEREND DOUGLAS NORMAN EARP Rev. Douglas Norman Earp, 66, of Mabton entered into rest on Monday, Sept. 6, 2010, at Prosser Memorial Hospital He was born June 10, 1944 in Melbourne, Australia to William and Shirley (Hendrickson) Earp. The family moved to Florida in 1946, where Doug was raised and educated. He left home at the age of 16 and hitchhiked from Florida to California, lied about his age and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was released from the Army six months later and lived in the San Diego, Calif. area.

Doug was saved on the streets in California and shortly thereafter lived at a Christian House in Wilbur. He moved to Yakima in 1981 and while studying for the ministry, dedicated his life to street ministry and created a youth crisis hotline. Doug became an ordained minister in 1983.

Doug married Marzella Folk in 1982, and the couple moved to Mabton in 1988, where they founded and have been directors of First Love Ministries Ranch ever since.

Doug is survived by his wife, Marzella “Marcie” Earp of Mabton; three children, Troy Earp and Tonya Young both of California and

Claudia Earp of Florida; two stepchildren, Sean (Connie) Gebhardt of Monroe and Paiege (Dave) Flink of Selah; six grandchildren, Roger Earp and Jillian Earp both of California, Danielle (Darrick) Green, Gabrielle Gebhardt and Joshua Gebhardt all of Monroe and Justin Gebhardt of Selah; and four great-grandchildren including, Mali Flink of Selah and Andrew Gebhardt of Kittitas; three sisters, Diane, Juanita and Linda all of Florida; two brothers, Mike of Texas and Daryl of Mabton; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; and his parents.

A life celebration will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Christian Worship Center in Zillah.

The family asks that you dress casually and thanks you in advance for not bringing children under the age of 12.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Love Ministries, P.O. Box 1000, Mabton, WA 98935.

Frankie Prieto, Raul Razo and Abel Pasidlas stomped 9.17 lbs. of juice from their grapes.
