2013 TEXAS TECH SOCCER TOP STORYLINES

TECH RETURNS TO THE NCAA TOURNAMENT

Texas Tech advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history and second time in as many seasons. The Red Raiders hosted Minnesota in the first round and shutout the Golden Gophers 3-0 before advancing to the second round to face former Big 12 rival Texas A&M in Chapel Hill, N.C. Tech remained unbeaten in NCAA Tournament games played at the John Walker Soccer Complex where they have also yet to give up a goal in postseason play.

RED RAIDERS CLOSE SEASON IN TOP-20 OF NATIONAL RANKINGS

After advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and capturing a school record 18 victories, the Red Raider soccer team appeared at No. 17 in the NSCAA Postseason Rankings. It marks the highest postseason ranking in program history after Texas Tech wrapped up the 2012 season with a No. 25 ranking - its first appearance in the postseason top-25 in school history. Tech also appeared in the top-30 of the final NCAA RPI rankings checking in at No. 29.

RED RAIDERS FINISH PROGRAM-BEST SECOND IN BIG 12

Texas Tech went unbeaten in Big 12 play with a 6-0-2 mark to finish second overall in the final conference standings. It marked a new program-best finish for the Red Raiders as Tech has improved its final Big 12 finish in each of the last six seasons. Tech’s six conference wins marked a program-best while the Red Raiders are one of just five teams to go unbeaten in Big 12 play in the last 13 seasons. In what has become a trademark for Texas Tech soccer, the Red Raider defense was dominant in 2013. Tech shutout 17 of its 23 opponents while allowing just nine goals for a remarkable 0.39 goals-against average. Tech’s 17 shutouts ranked second among all NCAA schools, while its goals-against average ranked No. 3 nationally. Both were school records. The Red Raiders also ranked second nationally in shutout percentage (.739) and sixth nationally in save percentage (.880). Tech’s nine goals allowed tied the Big 12 Confernce season record (Oklahoma State/2011).

TECH DEFENSE SHATTERS SCHOOL RECORDS

With a school record goals-against average of 0.39, the Red Raider defense posted a mark of below 1.0 for the third consecutive season. It marks the first time in school history to do so, while Tech is one of just two Big 12 programs (Baylor) to post a mark below 1.0 in each of the last three seasons. The Red Raiders allowed just one goal in the first half of play in 2013 and allowed just two goals total in conference play. RECORD FIVE RED RAIDERS EARN ALL-BIG 12 HONORS

Five Red Raiders were named to the postseason All-Big 12 team with three appearing on the first team. Sophomore forward Janine Beckie, junior defender Jaelene Hinkle and senior goalkeeper Victoria Esson each earned First Team honors while junior Paige Strahan and senior Hayley Haagsma were each named to the Second Team. The five selections to the All-Big 12 postseason team marked a new school record. Meanwhile, senior transfer Kansas Bayly and freshman Maddy Crabtree were named to the All-Big 12 Newcomer Team.

HINKLE EARNS ALL-AMERICA HONORS

Texas Tech’s Jaelene Hinkle became the program’s second All-American in two years when the junior defender was tabbed to the third team by the NSCAA. Hinkle finished the 2013 season with six assists and was named to both the All-Big 12 and NSCAA AllCentral Region first teams. Texas Tech is one of just two Big 12 programs to have at least one All-American in each of the last two seasons.

BECKIE CONTINUES STELLAR NCAA TOURNAMENT PLAY

Texas Tech sophomore forward Janine Beckie continued her brilliant play in the NCAA postseason in 2013 scoring three goals in just two matches. The Highlands Ranch, Colo. scored twice in Tech’s 3-0 shutout of Minnesota in the first round at the John Walker Soccer Complex before putting Tech ahead 2-1 over Texas A&M in the 75th minute of the Red Raiders’ second round match in Chapel Hill. For her career, Beckie has scored five goals and 1 assist (11 pts) in NCAA postseason play.
