2012 - A SEASON TO REMEMBER

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer program took one of the most significant and historic steps forward during the unprecedented and downright unforgettable 2012 season. Under the guidance of sixth-year head coach Tom Stone, the Red Raiders received their first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament, set a school record with 16 victories and advanced to the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament. It was a season in which the Red Raiders saw a remarkable six-game win-total improvement from 2011, the largest single-season improvement among Big 12 teams. In all, Tech ended the banner season with a 16-6-1 record - good for a school record .696 winning percentage. The Red Raiders concluded the regular season with a thrilling 2-0 shutout victory over Oklahoma State in the NSCAA College Game of the Week in front of a national audience on FOX Soccer Channel before advancing to the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament. The impressive regular season eventually earned the Red Raiders their first-ever NCAA bid and fittingly hosted North Texas in the first round. In it’s NCAA Tournament debut, Texas Tech moved to 9-1 at home in 2012 with a 2-0 shutout of North Texas in front of a standing room only crowd of 1,738 at the John Walker Soccer Complex - the third-largest NCAA First Round crowd nationally in 2012. Texas Tech was led in 2012 by freshman phenom Janine Beckie who tallied 14 goals - the most by a Red Raider since 1996. Beckie, who also netted five game-winners in her rookie campaign, earned Big 12 Rookie of the Year honors before becoming the first Texas Tech player to be named to the NSCAA All-America team as a second team selection. Meanwhile, junior goalkeeper Victoria Esson became the all-time shutouts leader by tying the school record with seven shutouts in 2012.

After netting just one goal during her freshman campaign in 2011, Strahan has exploded for eight strikes this season and has led the Big 12 alongside Beckie with five game-winners. Strahan strung together a pivotal five-match scoring streak from Sept. 16-30 which was the longest scoring streak by a Red Raider since 2009.

Beckie, who earned All-America Second Team honors, led the Red Raiders and all Big 12 freshmen with 14 goals of her own. Two of her game-winning strikes came with within the final minute of play. Perhaps most telling is the Red Raiders were 11-3 when either Beckie or Strahan finds the back of the net.

Tech Dominates at Home in 2012 There truly was no place like home for the Red Raiders in 2012 as they concluded the 2012 season with a 9-1 mark when playing at the John Walker Soccer Complex. Texas Tech’s nearly unblemished record came in convincing fashion as well. The Red Raiders outscored opponents by a margin of 23-6 through 10 home matches. Texas Tech has now won at least seven matches at home for the third consecutive season while the Red Raiders are 37-16-1 at home under head coach Tom Stone. Since the opening of the John Walker Soccer Complex prior to the 2009 season, the Red Raiders are 28-9-1 at home. The winningest coach in program history, Tom Stone enters his sixth season at the helm of the Red Raiders as the 2012 season arrives. During his tenure in Lubbock, Stone has built the Texas Tech program into an annual contender in the Big 12 Conference most recently guiding the Red Raiders to their highest finish in school history. The Red Raiders finished fourth in 2011 in what is consistently regarded as one of the toughest conferences in the country. During his five-year tenure in Lubbock, Stone has steadily built the program with a foundation of strong recruiting, annually bringing some of the top talent in the state and the country to Lubbock. Stone has guided to Red Raiders to five consecutive Big 12 Tournament appearances during his tenure. Prior to his arrival the Red Raiders had failed to reach the conference tournament in three straight seasons. Not only has Stone built the Texas Tech program into a power on the field, but he has created an identity for the entire

program - one that the Lubbock community has embraced. On Friday nights in the fall, thousands of fans flock to the John Walker Soccer Complex - one of the premier soccer facilities in the country. That embrace of the Texas Tech soccer program was never more evident than the 2011 season where a new standard for attendance was set. A total of 14,657 fans attended 11 home games during the 2011 season to help Tech rank No. 13 in the nation for average home attendance. Twice during the campaign the Red Raiders broke single-game attendance marks with an announced crowd of 2,176 attending the final showdown with Texas A&M on Oct. 7, while 2,228 fans watched the Red Raiders take on Kansas on Oct. 14. Tech hosted a total of 3,520 fans during the final weekend of home matches last season, which included the thrilling double-overtime victory over Texas. The figure was a new stadium record for a weekend series. In all, the average single-game attendance has ballooned by 280 percent during the Tom Stone Era, increasing from an average of 349 per-game during the 2007 season to last year’s mark of 1,332.

MATCH RECAPS

AUG. 17 vs. IDAHO

W, 2-1

AUG. 19 vs. NEW MEXICO

W, 2-0

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech opened the 2012 season with a thrilling 2-1 win over Idaho Friday night at the John Walker Soccer Complex. Sophomore Paige Strahan provided the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute of action to give the Red Raiders the win in front of an announced crowd of 1,117. “I thought we adjusted nicely tonight,” head coach Tom Stone said. “My biggest impression was that when they equalized after we had been all over them for 80 minutes, our team was not going to accept a draw. We just turned up the volume, scored the second goal and it was over.” Texas Tech scored the opening goal less than a minute into the match when freshman Janine Beckie punched a shot into the back of the net just 57 seconds into the match. With the goal, Beckie became the first Red Raider to score a goal in her Texas Tech debut since Jessica Fuston in 2010. Beckie finished the match with a game-high eight shots on the night. The Red Raiders went on to control the first half of the match, outscoring Idaho 10-5 heading into the intermission and eventually outscoring the Vandals 22-7 for the match. Idaho responded late in the second half when Chelsea Small scored on a deflection in front of the net to tie the game at 1-1. However, it took the Red Raiders less than four minutes to respond with a goal of their own as Strahan gave the Red Raiders the winning goal at the other end to seal the match.

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech shutout New Mexico 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the John Walker Soccer Complex to put the finishing touches on a perfect 2-0 start to the 2012 season. The Red Raiders netted two second half goals to push past the Lobos in the first meeting between the two schools since the 2004 season. “The strength of today’s game is that we were able to flex our roster a bit and the fresh legs really made a difference,” head coach Tom Stone said. “It is really tough to play on Friday and Sunday, especially this early in the season. When we went to our fresh legs and changed our roster out almost completely on the field, the game really turned in our direction.” With the win, the Red Raiders secured their third consecutive 2-0 start to a season. Meanwhile, the Lobos, who were picked to win their third consecutive Mountain West title, dropped to 0-1-1 on the year. Freshman Alli Murphy opened the scoring for the Red Raiders early in the second half when she scored on a penalty kick in the 50th minute of action. It marked the first goal of her Texas Tech career and the second goal by a Red Raider freshman in just two matches of play this season. Junior veteran Jessica Fuston later put the finishing touches on the Tech victory with her first goal of the 2012 season on an assist from Murphy. The goal was the 20th of her career and moved her into sole possession of fifth all-time in career goals. The aggressive Texas Tech defense held the Lobos the just one shot on goal for the match, and helped to give junior Victoria Esson her eighth career shutout. The eight shutouts rank fifth all-time at Tech, just one behind Colleen Pitts in fourth with nine. The Red Raiders will make their first road trip of the 2012 season when they travel to Ft. Worth to play in the TCU Invitational next weekend. Tech will open play against Stephen F. Austin on Friday at 5 p.m.

RED RAIDER SOCCER - 2012

MATCH RECAPS

AUG. 24 vs. STEPHEN F. AUSTIN

W, 1-0

AUG. 19 vs. MONTANA

W, 4-0

FT. WORTH, Texas - Just last weekend, Texas Tech freshman forward Janine Beckie proved she could strike within the opening seconds of a match. On Friday night, she put yet another element of her game on display with a heroic game-winning goal in the final minute of regulation. The Highlands Park, Colo. native found the back of the net in the 89th minute of the Red Raiders’ meeting with previously undefeated Stephen F. Austin on the opening night of the TCU Invitational. The stellar goal gave the Red Raiders a 1-0 shutout victory, and sealed a perfect 3-0-0 start to the season. Beckie’s goal came off a deflection from teammate Tiffini Smith’s shot attempt with less than a minute remaining in the match. The score marked the second goal of her young, yet already impressive Texas Tech career with her first coming in opening minute of the season-opener on Aug. 17. With the victory, the Red Raiders are off to their best start since 2010 when Tech won five straight matches to open the season. Junior veteran goalkeeper Victoria Esson recorded a season-high five saves on the evening, with three coming in the first half of action. The Christchurch, New Zealand native now moves into a tie for fourth all-time in career shutouts with former Red Raider Colleen Pitts with nine.

FT. WORTH, Texas - Texas Tech junior Jessica Fuston matched a careerhigh with three goals Sunday morning as she propelled the Red Raiders to a convincing 4-0 shutout over Montana. With the three goals, Fuston matched her own school record for a single game - a feat she has reached now three times during her career. The Cedar Park, Texas native last recorded a hat trick on Sept. 25 of last year in a 5-0 win over Northern Arizona at the John Walker Soccer Complex. The impressive performance capped off a 2-0 weekend at the TCU Invitational in Ft. Worth, as the Red Raiders defeated Stephen F. Austin on Friday night with a game-winning goal in the 89th minute. Texas Tech (4-0-0) is off its best start to a season since 2010 when the Red Raiders opened the year with five straight victories. Tech got off to a quick start in the first half as Fuston found the back of the net with her first goal of the afternoon at the 23:03 mark off an assist from sophomore Jaelene Hinkle. The assist was Hinkle’s first of the season. It took just 2:50 for Fuston to strike again as she fired another shot past Montana goalkeeper Kristen Hoon at the 25:53 mark to give the Red Raiders a 2-0 lead midway through the first half. The two goals in just under three minutes by Fuston were the quickest back-to-back strikes by a single Tech player since Fuston scored twice in just 53 seconds against Northern Arizona last season on Sept. 25 in a 5-0 win at the John Walker Soccer Complex. The Red Raiders went into the half with a 2-0 lead over the Grizzlies before Fuston added her third goal of the afternoon at the 60:41 mark off a cross from teammate Conner Williams. Senior Sarah Ellison gave the Red Raiders their fourth and final goal when she scored off an assist from freshman Ashley Casey at the 79:58 mark. It marked the first goal of the season for Ellison, and the first career assist for Casey.

RED RAIDER SOCCER - 2012

MATCH RECAPS

AUG. 31 vs. NEVADA

W, 1-0

SEPT. 2 vs. OLE MISS

L, 2-0

LUBBOCK, Texas - Freshman Janine Beckie scored her second career game-winning goal late Friday night to push the Red Raiders past Nevada 1-0 at the John Walker Soccer Complex. The late strike came at the 81:57 mark of a physical match, as Tech improved to a perfect 5-0-0 on the season. With the victory, the Red Raiders match their best start since the 2010 season, and have now shutout four consecutive opponents on the year. Beckie’s game-winner developed off a long pass from teammate, and fellow freshman, Alli Murphy. With the ball just inside the 18-yard box, Beckie beat a diving Dana Moreno on a long strike to give the Red Raiders the 1-0 lead and eventually the match. For the third time this season, the Red Raiders entered the halftime break scoreless but used the late heroics from Beckie to secure the victory. Texas Tech has now outscored its opponents 7-1 in the second half this season. The shutout marked the third on the season for junior veteran goalkeeper Victoria Esson. The Christchurch, New Zealand native notched two saves on the evening, and has now totaled 10 shutouts during her prolific career. Texas Tech outshot the Wolf Pack 19-4 on the evening while winning the shots-on-goal battle 9-2.

OXFORD, Miss. - The Texas Tech soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2012 season as the Red Raiders fell to Ole Miss 2-0 Sunday night at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. With the loss, Texas Tech drops to 5-1-0 on the season while giving up its first goal since the season-opener on Aug. 17. Ole Miss found the back of the net early in the 11th minute of the match before adding a goal late in the second half to hand the Red Raiders a loss in their first of five consecutive matches away from the John Walker Soccer Complex. The loss marked the first for Texas Tech junior goalkeeper Victoria Esson on the year as the Christchurch, New Zealand native entered the match with a string of nine straight saves and three straight shutouts. Esson recorded a season-high six saves on the night. The Red Raiders nearly tied the match late in the first half when freshman Briana Rohmer sent a cross to Sarah Ellison in front of the Rebel goal. In pursuit of a header and the equalizer, Ellison collided with Ole Miss goalkeeper Kelly McCormick in midair sending the ball out of danger and erasing the scoring opportunity Tech. Texas Tech outshot the Rebels in the second half 11-3, but could not find the back of the net while the Rebels extended their lead with an Olivia Harrison goal at the 77:50 mark off a free kick to seal the match. The Red Raiders were paced offensively by senior Tiffini Smith and freshman Janine Beckie who combined for six shots on the night - five of which came in the second half.

MATCH RECAPS

SEPT. 8 vs. AUBURN

L, 2-1

AUBURN, Ala. - Texas Tech fell to Auburn 2-1 Saturday night at the Auburn Soccer Complex in the second of back-to-back SEC road matches for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech outshot the Tigers 16-8 with 11 shots on goal, but Auburn goalkeeper Amy Howard notched a season-high 10 saves in front of the net to seal the win for the Tigers. The loss is just Tech’s second of the season after beginning the year with five straight victories. Auburn took a 2-0 lead midway through the first half with both goals coming off free kicks. However, the Red Raiders responded when Texas Tech junior Jessica Disabella connected on her first goal of the season in the 43rd minute to swing the momentum heading into the halftime break. The goal was the sixth of Disabella’s career. Tech went on to outshoot Auburn 10-3 in the second half but couldn’t find the back of the net as Howard recorded six of her 10 saves in front of the net during the final 45 minutes. Texas Tech freshman Janine Beckie led the Red Raider offense with a team-high five shots - two of which hit the cross bar and one hit the post. Saturday marked the third time this season the Texas Tech defense has held an opponent to eight or less shots during a match.

SEPT. 14 vs. No. 20 Long Beach State

FULLERTON, Calif - Janine Beckie did it yet again. Friday night, the sensational freshman netted her third gamewinning goal of the season to push the Red Raiders past No. 20 Long Beach State in their opening match of the Cal State Fullerton Under Armour Invitational. The dramatic game-winner came with just 31 seconds left in double overtime at Titan Stadium, and was her second goal of the evening. Beckie not only gave the Red Raiders the win, but sent the match into overtime with the equalizer at the 84:12 mark to erase a late 2-1 Long Beach State lead. Friday’s victory marks the first over a ranked opponent since 2009 and snapped a two-game losing skid. Tech now improves to 6-2 on the season and will complete play at the Cal State Fullerton Under Armour Invitational Sunday afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. match against the host Titans. As Tech has done throughout the season, the Red Raiders outshot the 49’ers 26-15 on the night, including a 6-1 advantage in overtime play. Beckie paced the Red Raider offense with a game-high 13 shots. Following a scoreless first half of action, the Red Raiders jumped out to a 1-0 lead off a header from junior Hayley Haagsma at the 49:19 mark. The goal was the first of the season for the Cerritos, Calif native and the second of her career. The 49’ers would then score back-to-back goals, both off the foot of Eileen Maes, to take a 2-1 lead late in the second half. However, the first of Beckie’s two goals came with just under six minutes remaining in regulation off a strike from the corner of the six-yard box. With her fourth goal of the season, the Red Raiders tied the match at two goals apiece.

MATCH RECAPS

SEPT 16 vs. CAL STATE FULLERTON

W, 2-1

SEPT 21 vs. WEST VIRGINIA L, 3-2

FULLERTON, Calif - With a 2-1 victory over Cal State Fullerton Sunday afternoon at Titan Stadium, Texas Tech put the finishing touches on an undefeated weekend and claimed the Under Armour Invitational title. Freshman Janine Beckie and Paige Strahan both found the back of the net in the victory as Texas Tech moved to 7-2 overall with its second straight win. Beckie was named Tournament MVP with three goals throughout the weekend including the spectacular game-winner against Long Beach State Friday with just 31 seconds remaining in double-overtime. Beckie now leads the Red Raiders with six goals on the season to go along with a team-high 18 shots on goal. Beckie got the Red Raiders on the board early in the first half with a goal in the 13th minute of play to give Texas Tech a 1-0 lead over the Titans. Tech would enter the halftime break with the 1-0 lead before Strahan netted her second goal of the season with a strike at the 81:37 mark. The Titans would respond less than two minutes later though with a goal of their own as Christina Burkenroad sent a header into the near post to cut the Red Raider lead to 2-1 with less than seven minutes remaining. However the Texas Tech defense shut the Titans down in the final minutes of play to secure the win. Texas Tech goalkeeper Victoria Esson earned her sixth win of the season with four saves in front of the net - all of which came in the second half. The Red Raiders will open Big 12 play Friday at West Virginia in Morgantown before returning home to face New Mexico State at the John Walker Soccer Complex on Sept. 23.

MORGANTOWN, W.V. - In the first ever meeting between the two schools, Texas Tech fell to West Virginia 3-2 Friday night in its 2012 Big 12 opener at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Red Raiders overcame an early 2-0 deficit and tied the match late in the second half, but West Virginia netted the game-winner on a penalty kick at the 78:42 mark to snap Tech’s two-match winning streak. With the loss the Red Raiders fall to 7-3 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 Conference play. Senior Morgan Johnson and sophomore Paige Strahan netted goals for the Red Raiders. Johnson scored her first career goal five minutes into the second half, while Strahan tied the match with her third goal of the season in the 73rd minute. Texas Tech outshot the Mountaineers 16-12 on the night and held the advantage in shots on goal 8-6, but suffered its first loss in a Big 12 opener since 2008. West Virginia scored two goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime before Tech mounted its comeback attempt early in the second half. Johnson’s goal at the 50:08 mark cut West Virginia’s lead to just one off a cross from teammate Hayley Haagsma. The assist was Haagmsa’s first of the season. Strahan then tied the match with a strike from 20-yards out off an assist from sophomore Erin Inman. The assist was also Inman’s first of the season. West Virginia’s Frances Silva scored the game-winning penalty kick in the 79th minute to give the Mountaineers the 3-2 lead and eventually the match. The goal was her seventh on the season.

RED RAIDER SOCCER - 2012

MATCH RECAPS

SEPT 23 vs. NEW MEXICO STATE W, 5-0

SEPT 27 vs. OKLAHOMA W, 2-1

MORGANTOWN, W.V. -Sophomore Paige Strahan erupted for two goals and Texas Tech outshot New Mexico State 21-8 Sunday afternoon as the Red Raiders stormed to a 5-0 shutout victory over the Aggies. With the win, Texas Tech improves to 8-3 on the season and a perfect 4-0 at the John Walker Soccer Complex. The dominant performance came after falling to West Virginia 3-2 Friday, and on the heels of a nearly 1,500 mile return trip from Morgantown, W.V. Four Red Raiders found the back of the net Sunday including Strahan along with Janine Beckie, Morgan Johnson and Caity Heap. Heap recorded her first career goal, while Johnson netted her second goal of the weekend after registering her first career goal Friday at West Virginia. For Strahan, Sunday marked her first career multi-goal performance. The win marked Texas Tech’s fifth shutout this year while allowing just one goal at home in four contests. Texas Tech jumped on the board early when Strahan netted her first goal of the afternoon in the 14th minute of action. She then followed with a long blast from just beyond the 18-yard box to beat New Mexico State goalkeeper Mikaela Bitner to her right and give the Red Raiders a 2-0 lead which they would carry into halftime. The Red Raiders didn’t slow down out of the half time break either as Beckie netted her seventh goal this season in the 72nd minute to put Tech up 3-0. The goal came off an assist from junior Jessica Fuston who led Beckie perfectly with a header into the penalty area. Johnson then added to the lead with a long blast from the right side just beyond the 18-yard box for her second career goal and second score of the weekend. Heap put the finishing touches on the rout in the 84th minute with a strike from the middle of the box to put Texas Tech up 5-0 and close out the dominant Sunday performance.

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech used two first half goals to power past Oklahoma Friday night in its Big 12 home opener at the John Walker Soccer Complex. In the midst of a steady rainfall, the Red Raiders outshot Oklahoma 26-10 while sophomore Paige Strahan and junior Jessica Fuston each found the back of the net. With the victory, the Red Raiders improved to 9-3 on the season and an even 1-1 in Big 12 play. With the win, Texas Tech improved to a perfect 5-0 in games at the John Walker Soccer Complex this season where the Red Raiders are outscoring opponents by a margin of 12-2. Meanwhile, Tech has matched its best start through 12 games since 2010 Strahan put the Red Raiders on the board early with a strike in the eighth minute of play off a pass from sophomore Jaelene Hinkle. The Odessa, Texas native took the pass inside the six-yard box, slid and punched the ball past Oklahoma keeper Kelsey Devonshire to give the Red Raiders the early 1-0 advantage. The goal was Texas Tech’s second quickest this season behind only freshman Janine Beckie’s score just 17 seconds into the Red Raiders’ season opener on Aug. 17 against Idaho. Strahan has now scored in four straight matches dating back to Texas Tech’s 2-1 win over No. 20 Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 16. The scoring streak is the longest since senior Dawn Ward scored in five straight matches during her freshman campaign in 2009.

RED RAIDER SOCCER - 2012

MATCH RECAPS

SEPT 30 vs IOWA STATE W, 2-1

OCT 5 vs NO. 25 BAYLOR L, 3-2 (2OT)

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech sophomore Paige Strahan netted her fourth game-winning goal of the season on Sunday afternoon to give the Red Raiders their third-straight win with a 2-1 victory over Iowa State. The Odessa, Texas native took a feed from freshman Janine Beckie and punched it past Iowa State goalkeeper Andrea Swanson in the 54th minute of action for her sixth goal in the last five matches. With the victory, the Red Raiders improve to 10-3 on the season and move to 2-1 in Big 12 play after opening the weekend with a 2-1 win over Oklahoma Friday night. Strahan has now scored in five-straight matches, including a two-score performance against New Mexico State on Sept. 23, to bring her total to seven on the year. She is the first Red Raider to score in five consecutive matches since senior Dawn Ward scored in five straight during her freshman season in 2009. Texas Tech is now off to its best start through 13 games in program history, and is a perfect 6-0 at the John Walker Soccer Complex. Freshman Janine Beckie got the Red Raiders on the board early in the first half with her team-leading eighth goal of the season. The Highlands Ranch, Colo. product sent a deep shot from just outside the penalty box to beat Swanson to her right and give the Red Raiders early the 1-0 lead. Iowa State would tie the match at the 32:24 mark with a penalty kick as Theresa Kucera netted her second goal of the season to tie the match at 1-1. Texas Tech and Iowa State would enter the halftime break knotted at 1-1. The Red Raiders entered Sunday a perfect 9-0 when leading or tied at the half, and that wouldn’t change Sunday afternoon.

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech rallied late Friday night in a Big 12 battle with No. 25 Baylor, tying the match with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation, but fell to the Bears 3-2 in double overtime at the John Walker Soccer Complex. Baylor’s Bri Campos scored the game-winning goal just less than five minutes into the second overtime period to hand Texas Tech its first home loss this season. The win was Baylor’s first in Lubbock since the 2004 season and marked the second consecutive meeting between the two schools that has been decided in double overtime. Friday’s loss snapped a threegame winning streak while the Red Raiders fell to 10-4 overall on the season and an even 2-2 in Big 12 play. Freshman Briana Rohmer tied the match at 2-2 with just 29 seconds remaining in regulation as she headed a shot past Baylor goalkeeper Michelle Kloss - erupting the crowd of 1,426 on hand. It marked the first career goal for Rohmer, a product of Fossil Ridge High School, while sophomore Paige Strahan picked up her second assist on the year with the long pass from left of the penalty box. Baylor opened the scoring on a chilly Friday night when Lisa Sliwinski netted her fifth goal of the season in the ninth minute to put the Bears up 1-0. The Red Raiders suddenly faced their first deficit in seven games at the John Walker Soccer Complex this season, and entered the halftime break trailing 1-0. However, the Red Raiders were able to swing that momentum back when freshman Janine Beckie connected on her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 66th minute of play. Junior Hayley Haagsma found Beckie with a long pass downfield and the Highlands Ranch, Colo., native swiftly took the feed and blasted a shot that beat Kloss to her left and tied the match 1-1. Texas Tech is now 1-1 in overtime games this season as the Red Raiders defeated No. 20 Long Beach State 3-2 in double overtime earlier this year at the Cal State Fullerton Under Armour Invitational tournament.

RED RAIDER SOCCER - 2012

MATCH RECAPS

OCT 12 at TEXAS W, 1-0

OCT 14 vs FRANCIS MARION W, 3-0

AUSTIN, Texas - Dawn Ward’s first goal of the 2012 season proved to be a pivotal one Friday night. The Texas Tech senior connected on a strike in the 58th minute at Mike A. Myers Stadium to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 victory over Texas in a key Big 12 road match. With the victory, Texas Tech moves to 11-4 overall and 3-2 in Big 12 play. The Red Raiders have now won back-to-back regular season games against the Longhorns dating back to a 3-2 double overtime victory last year at the John Walker Soccer Complex in Lubbock. Just over ten minutes into the second half of play, Ward took a deflected shot off the foot of freshman Janine Beckie, and punched it from just outside the six-yard box past Texas goalkeeper Abby Smith. The goal broke a scoreless tie to give Tech a 1-0 lead. The strike, which marked the first goal allowed by Texas in Big 12 play this year, proved to be all the Red Raiders needed as they managed the remainder of the match and secured their third conference victory of the season. Ward now has 20 career goals and ranks fifth all-time on the Texas Tech career scoring list. With the goal, Tech is now outscoring opponents 17-6 in the second half this season. Texas Tech junior goalkeeper Victoria Esson registered five saves on the evening and recorded her 11th career shutout in the process. The Christchurch, New Zealand native who transferred to Texas Tech prior to the 2011 season now moves into a tie for second all-time at Texas Tech in career shutouts. The Red Raiders took control of the match early in the first half, creating several scoring opportunities including a strike from freshman Briana Rohmer in the 14th minute. Rohmer, who made her first career start on Friday, took a well-placed feed from Beckie inside the box and nearly punched into the back of the Texas net. But Smith, the reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, made one of her eight saves on the night to handle the dangerous shot.

LUBBOCK, Texas - A convincing 3-0 shutout of Francis Marion on Senior Day put the finishing touches on a weekend sweep for Red Raiders on Sunday afternoon at the John Walker Soccer Complex. Texas Tech outshot the Patriots by a 35-5 margin, and with the victory improve to 12-4 on the season. Meanwhile, the Red Raiders now boast a nearly unblemished 7-1 record at home. Texas Tech, who honored nine student-athletes representing the 2012 senior class prior to the match, completed the dominant weekend with back-to-back shutouts after taking a 1-0 win over Texas in Austin on Friday night. Texas Tech has now shutout seven opponents in 2012, while the 12 wins are just one victory shy of the single-season program record of 13 set in 1996. The Red Raiders got on the board early compliments of an own-goal by Francis Marion who deflected a Texas Tech strike into its own net in the opening minute of the match. The score came just 57 seconds into the game and helped to set an early tone to the match. Tech, who entered the game a perfect 11-0 when taking the first lead of a match, never looked back as Jessica Disabella and Leah Christensen each netted goals of their own while the Red Raiders controlled the attack the rest of the way. Disabella gave Texas Tech a comfortable 2-0 lead in the 25th minute with a powerful strike from the left side that beat Francis Marion goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry to her left. The strike came off an assist from freshman Caity Heap and marked Disabella’s second goal of the season. The assist was the first of Heap’s young career. The Red Raiders entered halftime with a 2-0 lead after scoring multiple goals in the opening 45 minutes for the fourth time this season.

RED RAIDER SOCCER - 2012

MATCH RECAPS

OCT. 19 at TCU T, 1-1 (2OT)

OCT 21 at KANSAS W, 3-1

FORT WORTH, Texas - Texas Tech had all of the pieces in place heading into the final minutes of regulation Friday night at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium. The Red Raiders dominated the attack, scored a first half goal and were headed towards their fourth conference victory of the season. But a late TCU goal in the 89th minute of play suddenly forced overtime before Texas Tech settled for its first draw of the season, tying the Horned Frogs 1-1 after two periods of extra play. With the tie, Texas Tech moves to 12-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in Big 12 play with a Sunday match at Kansas set to close out the weekend. Texas Tech’s opening score of the game came by way of a corner kick from the far side off the foot of sophomore Jaelene Hinkle. Ellison took the feed inside the box and headed it past TCU goalkeeper Vittoria Arnold to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Ellison’s second of the season while Hinkle picked up her team-leading fifth assist of the season. Hinkle now has nine assists for her career. TCU tied the match with just over a minute remaining in regulation when Monica Alvarado found the back of the net and forced the Red Raiders into just their third overtime match of the season. Tech went on to outshoot TCU 9-5 in overtime. The Red Raiders set a season-high for shots in the first half of a match as they controlled the opening 45 minutes of play outshooting the Horned Frogs by a margin of 15-1. Freshman Janine Beckie led the Red Raiders with a game-high 12 shots while junior Jessica Fuston and senior Tiffini Smith both added five. Four of Fuston’s five shots were on target. Beckie’s 12 shots were one shy of her career-high for a single match.

LAWRENCE, Kan. - A second half outburst by Texas Tech helped the Red Raiders to blow past Kansas 3-1 Sunday afternoon at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex. The victory brought a two-match Big 12 road trip to a close while the Red Raiders move to 13-4-1 on the season and 4-2-1 in Big 12 play. Texas Tech has now matched the school record for wins in a single season with the final home game of the year set for Friday night at the John Walker Soccer Complex in front of a nationally televised audience on FOX Soccer Channel. Texas Tech used a long strike from sophomore Paige Strahan from the top of the penalty box to take its first lead of the match at 2-1 in the 71st minute of play. Strahan took a feed from freshman Hannah Devine, swung around a defender and rifled the shot past Jayhawk goalkeeper Kat Liebetrau for the eventual game-winner. The goal was Strahan’s eight of the season and her fifth game-winner. Her five game-winning goals are the most by a Red Raiders since 1996 while her eight goals are second on the team behind freshman Janine Beckie with nine. The Jayhawks struck first early in the match as Courtney Dickerson connected on her fourth goal of the season to put Kansas on top 1-0 in the 15th minute of play. The Red Raiders then responded at the end of the first half when senior Dawn Ward sent a header into the back of the net for her second goal of the season and the 21st goal of her decorated career. Ward took a feed from fellow senior Morgan Johnson, and headed a rebound from her own initial strike into the Kansas net. The goal tied the match at 1-1 heading into the halftime break. The back-and-forth match would then remain tied before Strahan rifled in her game-winner at the 70:38 mark.

RED RAIDER SOCCER - 2012

MATCH RECAPS

OCT 26 at OKLAHOMA STATE W, 2-0

OCT 31 vs KANSAS W, 2-0

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech put on a show Friday night in the NSCAA College Game of the Week as the Red Raiders shutout Oklahoma State 2-0 in front of a nationally televised audience at the John Walker Soccer Complex. Freshman Janine Beckie, who entered the match as Tech’s leading scorer, connected on two second half goals as the Red Raiders broke the school record for victories in a single season with their 14th of the year. Texas Tech (14-4-1, 5-2-1 Big 12) secured a third place finish in the highly-competitive Big 12 marking the highest conference finish in school history with the Big 12 tournament looming next week in San Antonio. On a chilly Friday night with temperatures dropping into the lower 40s, the Red Raiders outshot Oklahoma State 18-9, and with the victory finished the regular season an impressive 8-1 in home matches. The Red Raiders are now 22-7-1 at home since 2010. After a scoreless first half, Beckie put Texas Tech on top in the 55th minute punching a deflected shot into the back of the net from inside the 6-yard box to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead. The goal swung the momentum of a back-and-forth match comfortably into the Red Raiders favor as Tech entered the game 13-0-1 on the season when striking first. Senior Morgan Johnson picked up the assist on the score marking her fourth of the season. The Red Raiders then struck once again as Beckie took a long feed from teammate Tiffini Smith across midfield and beat Oklahoma State’s Carson Michalowski for a clean shot at the Cowgirl goal. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native then blasted a shot from 12 yards out and beat Oklahoma State goalkeeper Andrianna Franch to the right to put Tech up 2-0 in the 71st minute.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Texas Tech used a two-goal outburst in the second half on Wednesday to shutout Kansas 2-0 in the opening round of the Big 12 Soccer Championships at Blossom Stadium in San Antonio. RED RAIDER SOCCER - 2012

MATCH RECAPS

NOV. 2 vs. BAYLOR L, 2-1

NOV. vs. 10 NORTH TEXAS W, 2-0

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Texas Tech’s Big 12 Championship run came to a close late Friday night as the Red Raiders fell to Baylor 2-1 in a tightly contested match at Blossom Stadium. Baylor found the back of the net in the 79th minute to break a longstanding 1-1 tie and advance to Sunday’s championship match. Texas Tech outshot the Bears 15-12 on the night, but with loss fell to 15-5-1 on the season after advancing to the semifinals for the first time in program history. The Red Raiders now await their postseason fate with the NCAA Tournament selection show scheduled for Monday at 3:30 p.m. (CT). Friday’s loss is the second in as many tries against Baylor (16-1-4) as Tech fell to the Bears 3-2 in double-overtime on Oct. 5 in Lubbock. Baylor struck early in just the fourth minute of play when senior Hanna Gillamore scored off a deflection in front of the Texas Tech net. The score, at the 3:36 mark of play, was the earliest goal surrendered by Texas Tech on the year. The Red Raiders responded though when senior Tiffini Smith connected for her first goal of the season when she sent a long header from outside the penalty box up and over Baylor goalkeeper Michelle Kloss to tie the match in the 21st minute. The goal was Smith’s sixth of her career, and came off a long deflected free kick from junior Hayley Haagsma. Texas Tech and Baylor entered the halftime break knotted in the 1-1 tie and continued a physical back-and-forth battle well into the second half. The Bears then struck late with the game-winning goal when Lisa Sliwinski scored in 79th minute off a deflected shot inside the six-yard box. It marked the senior’s third goal of the season against the Red Raiders after striking twice against Tech in Lubbock.

LUBBOCK, Texas - A standing-room only crowd at the John Walker Soccer Complex witnessed history Saturday night as Texas Tech shutout North Texas 2-0 in its first NCAA postseason match in school history. Senior Dawn Ward propelled the Red Raiders into the second round of the Women’s College Cup scoring two second half goals in her final match at the John Walker Soccer Complex. Ward and the Red Raiders (16-5-1) now face No. 1 seed Florida State next weekend in Tallahassee with a date and time to be determined. With the victory in front of a season-high crowd of 1,738, Texas Tech improved to 9-1 at the John Walker Soccer Complex and continued the most successful season in school history. The multi-goal performance marked the fourth of Ward’s career and the first since striking twice against Toledo last year. After a scoreless first half that saw Texas Tech outshoot the Mean Green 9-6, Ward connected on her first goal of the evening in the 51st minute of action. The Midland, Texas native took a pass from freshman Janine Beckie inside the box and sent a header past North Texas goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine for the opening goal of the match. The score was the first given up by Kerestine in three games heading into Saturday’s match. Ward then struck again in the 59th minute to give the Red Raiders a 2-0 advantage off a long pass from freshman Hannah Devine across the penalty box. The assist was Devine’s fourth of the season while Beckie earned her fifth of the year. The Red Raiders finished the home slate outscoring opponents 15-2 in the second half at the John Walker Soccer Complex. Junior goalkeeper Victoria Esson continued her stellar play late in the season with four saves on the night to earn a school record 14th career shutout. Saturday’s performance marked her seventh shutout this season.

RED RAIDER SOCCER - 2012

MATCH RECAPS

OCT 26 at NO. 6 FLORIDA STATE L, 3-2 (2OT) TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Texas Tech’s historic 2012 season came to a close on a chilly Friday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex in the second round of the NCAA Championships. In a fashion that has defined the relentless Red Raiders all season, Texas Tech forced overtime with less than three minutes remaining in regulation against top-seeded Florida State. But it wasn’t quite enough as the Seminoles scored the game-winner in the 104th minute to take the 3-2 victory in double overtime. The Red Raiders made the program’s debut in the NCAA Soccer Championships after advancing to the semifinals of the Big 12 Championships for the first time in school history. Texas Tech, which finished the season with a school record 16 wins, then advanced to Friday’s NCAA Second Round match after defeating North Texas 2-0 at the John Walker Soccer Complex. Trailing 2-1 with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, Texas Tech wasn’t quick to go away as stellar freshman Janine Beckie tied the match on a header in the 88th minute that silenced the host crowd. It was her second of the evening as she registered her third multi-goal performance of her rookie campaign and finished the season with a team-leading 14 scores on the year. Beckie, the Big 12 Rookie of the Year, got the Red Raiders on the board first Friday night with a goal in the 15th minute of play. The Highlands Ranch Colo., native took a feed from junior Jessica Fuston inside the box and beat Florida State goalkeeper Kelsey Wys to her left to give the Red Raiders the early 1-0 lead. The assist was Fuston’s fourth of the season. The Red Raiders held onto 1-0 advantage until Florida State responded just before the halftime break in the 40th minute of play. Florida State sophomore Marta Bakowska-Mathews provided the equalizer that soared into top left corner of the Texas Tech goal and knotted the match at 1-1 heading into the break. Goal Breakdown
