2014 TEXAS TECH BASEBALL SEASON REVIEW TEXAS TECH OPENS 4-0 FOR 14TH TIME IN SCHOOL HISTORY - 7TH TIME SINCE 1997 Tech has opened the season 4-0 for the 14th time in school history and just the seventh time since 1997. The Red Raiders have also opened 4-0 in 2011, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2002 and 1999. TEXAS TECH BREAKS 41-YEAR RECORD ALLOWING JUST TWO RUNS DURING OPENING WEEKEND Texas Tech broke a school record holding its opponents to just two runs during the first four games of the season. The Red Raiders broke a 41-year old record that was held by the 1972 Red Raiders who allowed five runs during their opening four games. Tech outscored its opponents 36-2 during its first four games of the season. TECH PITCHING STAFF OPENS SEASON WITH 12 CONSECUTIVE SCORELESS INNINGS & TWO SHUTOUTS Texas Tech’s pitching staff opened the season holding its opponents scoreless for the first 12 innings of the year. Also during the opening weekend, Tech held its opponents scoreless for 10 straight innings and then finished the first weekend of the season putting together another 10 scoreless innings streak. MORENO HAS MEMORABLE RED RAIDER DEBUT Dominic Moreno opened his Tech career with a memorable Opening Day start leading Tech to an 8-0 shutout win over Northern Illinois. Moreno struck out 11 batters in six shutout innings while allowing five hits and three walks while throwing 97 pitches. Moreno’s strikeout total marked the most by a Red Raider on Opening Day in over 17 years. His strikeout total also marked the most by any Red Raider during a career debut in over 12 years - the previous mark was eight set by Juan Razo at TCU on Feb. 22, 2003. In addition, Moreno’s six innings in his career debut marked the most by a Red Raider on Opening Day since current Cleveland Indians RHP Josh Tomlin also threw six innings on Opening Day for Tech in 2006 vs. Louisiana-Monroe. CONLEY HITS INSIDE-THE-PARK HOMER FOR FIRST CAREER HR - AND FIRST FOR TECH IN 2013 Devon Conley hit the first home run of the season for Tech, but his home run didn’t leave the ballpark as he hit an inside-the-park homer to center field which ended with a three-run homer. Conley became the first Red Raider to hit an inside-the-park home run since Feb. 24, 2012 when Barrett Barnes hit a three-run inside-the-park home run vs. No. 18 St. John’s at Rip Griffin Park. Conley is the third Red Raider to hit a home run inside the park since 2010 while former Red Raider Nick Popescu also hit a three-run inside-the-park home run at home against Bethune-Cookman on February 27, 2010. TEXAS TECH ON OPENING DAY Texas Tech is now 41-23 on Opening Day, which includes a 14-1 record since 1999. The Red Raiders have won five consecutive on Opening Day while capturing 14 straight Opening-Day victories at home (dates back to 1999). During the Red Raiders recent five straight Opening Day wins, Tech has outscored its opponent 42-7 while having allowed just 11 combined hits the past three Opening Day games. Tech’s only loss on Opening Day over the last 14 years came against No. 19 UL Lafayette (0-4) at the Roadrunner Classic in San Antonio on February 23, 2008. OPENING DAY IN LUBBOCK Texas Tech has been nearly unbeatable when hosting Opening Day on their home turf with a 28-5 all-time record. The Red Raiders have won 14 consecutive Opening Day games at home while its last loss came during its Big 12 championship season in 1997 against TCU (1-10) on February 11. In fact, since 1986, Texas Tech is 20-1 on Opening Day in its home ballpark. The Red Raiders’ 8-0 victory over Northern Illinois on Opening Day marked its fifth consecutive Opening Day at home. HOME OPENER ATTENDANCES Texas Tech had 2,459 fans in attendance on Opening Day - which marked the fourth largest crowd on Opening Day in Lubbock since 2001. In fact, the last Red Raider head coach to not win his debut game came in 1954 when Beattie Feathers and Tech came up short against Sul Ross State in a 1-23 loss.
