Assistant Coach • 4th Season Lubbock Christian University, 1993 Beginning his fourth year as an assistant coach at Texas Tech, Trent Petrie is the Red Raiders recruiting coordinator and defensive and base running coach. Like Spencer, his determination and desire to see the Red Raiders compete at the highest level is helping him draw attention from some of the top recruits across the state of Texas and New Mexico. With his main recruiting base being the talent rich state of Texas, Petrie has helped land some of the state’s most promising players and is helping the Red Raiders regain their once prominent role on the national scene. Petrie made an immediate impact with the Texas Tech defense as they were second in the Big 12 in fielding (.971) during his first season in 2008. The Red Raiders were 23rd in the nation turning double plays and also ranked 28th in the country with 76 stolen bases. Petrie mentored Willie Rueda who led the Big 12 with 27-of-34 stolen bases, ranking 32rd nationally. In both 2009 and 2010, the Red Raiders ranked among league leaders turning double plays. Tech turned 49 double plays in 2009 and tallied 55 the following season. In 2010, Petrie’s top base stealer was Jamodrick McGruder, who was fourth in the Big 12 with 23-of-27 stolen bases. Petrie, 40, brought 12 years of coaching experience to Tech after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of New Mexico. While at New Mexico, Petrie served as the hitting coach and helped place multiple Lobos into the Mountain West Conference’s Top-10 offensive rankings. Prior to his stint at New Mexico, he served one year as the director of baseball operations at Oklahoma State, under former Red Raider assistant coaches Frank Anderson and Greg Evans. Petrie brought along three years of head coaching experience as he led Clarendon College from 2001-03. After starting the baseball program at Clarendon, he helped lead the team to the WJCAC Northern Division Championship (2003) in just three seasons.
