Making Connections Through Literacy 2 0 1 9 - 2 0 A N N UA L R E P O RT

Dear Friends of Literacy, These past few months have touched and changed each of us. The world we are now navigating is filled with uncertainty and confusion. This season has naturally caused us all to re-prioritize our values, and there are aspects of our lives that continue to rise to the top of that list: relationships and connection. I value connection more than I ever have before. I have come to realize how important it is for us as humans to relate to others. For Teton Literacy Center, relationships and connection make our work possible. As such, closures and social isolation pushed us to find new and creative ways to connect with our students and families. You can read more about these efforts on pages 2 and 3. In our tutoring program, relationship building and positive connections are the foundation of the student and tutor’s work together. We had 155 volunteers – the most in TLC history - involved in TLC programs this year, all of whom created personal connections with our youth. Read more about our volunteers on page 9. Our community connection and YOUR support are critical to our success. Your relationship with Teton Literacy Center enables our staff and volunteers to serve at the ground level in this valuable mission. Now more than ever we must continue to come together around access to high quality education. Thank you for taking the time to celebrate our successes of 2019-20 and for partnering with Teton Literacy Center in the years to come.

COVID-19 Response Efforts Along with the rest of the world, TLC is working to navigate these unprecedented times. We are grateful to be doing so with a full staff, committed board, engaged student population, and supportive community. Our doors physically closed March 16th June 21st, but we worked diligently to ensure that our students and families remain engaged in our efforts. When the COVID-19 pandemic became a reality, our first step was to surround our families with resources and support. Staff conducted calls to approximately 100 families per week to make community connections and gather information around needs. We then worked with community partners to find solutions and resources for families. After the basic needs of our families were met, we moved into adaptive learning on April 6th. We were thrilled with the positive response and were able to engage with over 150 students each week for the remainder of the academic year.

PAG E 2 | T E TO N L I T E R AC Y C E N T E R

Our adaptive learning efforts included: •

Developing participation opportunities for students and families through a robust website of online lessons and videos. This content included preschool instruction, project-based learning activities grounded in STEAM and literacy, and weekly stories recorded by volunteers.

Implementing weekly, literacy-based small group tutoring sessions via Zoom for 69 students.

Piloting a specialized online literacy and math program, IXL, that allows us to track student progress, time spent learning, and assign target skills for individual students.

Maintaining and prioritizing parent support through “phone visits,” weekly newsletters with tips and activities, virtual parent workshops to assist in establishing an at-home learning structure, and weekly parent English Classes.

Strengthening our 8-week summer SOAR program, as we anticipate an intensified need for remedial math and literacy support after so many weeks without face-toface learning.

Connecting families with local resources, including working with over 30 families to complete the One22 Financial Assistance application and connecting 26 families to generously donated new and used devices for online learning.

As we move forward, we recognize that many of the impacts of this pandemic will be long lasting both for our organization and the families we serve. School closures and remote learning will adversely affect low-income children and their families the most. The required and necessary school closure will only increase the achievement gap prevalent in our community. As such, we anticipate that the next 6 to 18 months will illustrate higher demand for TLC services than ever before. We are committed to this community and our families.

Fernanda is one of eleven eighth and ninth grade students who benefited from TLC’s efforts to develop a framework and curriculum specifically targeting our 8th-12th grade tutoring students over the past year. This framework is meant to retain these students through providing them with continued literacy support, which many critically need, and mentorship in other various aspects of academic success. Weekly sessions include targeted literacy practice along with the opportunity to build goal setting, growth mindset, and executive functioning skills, all specified to student needs. Sessions also include college and career awareness activities and focus on building general skills needed to navigate the academic pipeline, such as self-advocacy.

“I cannot say enough good things about the work Teton Literacy Center is doing in our community. Working with my student this year has been so fulfilling, and I have loved getting to know him. It’s such a joy to watch a young reader gain confidence and develop skills. He has taught me as much as I could hope to teach him!”

– TLC Volunteer Tutor For Fernanda, who just completed her 9th grade year at JHHS, these efforts have already been highly beneficial. She met with a tutor each week to increase her comprehension, grammar, study, organizational, and writing skills. As Fernanda is excited to pursue college upon her high school graduation and ultimately attend medical school, she also participated in our Money Savvy Broncs financial aid group and has leaned on TLC for support in connecting with other college and test prep programs. Moreover, Fernanda also spent an additional hour each week at TLC as a volunteer tutor for one of our elementary students, illustrating her appreciation for giving back to her community. We are excited to see Fernanda and all our older students continue to benefit from our college and career readiness efforts.

Family Literacy Program Student Success Stats: 100% of Lit Lab Students

continued participating in preschool programming with their teachers virtually during COVID-19 closures.

100% of Families

were reading at home with their child by the end of the year and felt that their child was ready to enter Kindergarten in the fall after graduating from our Pre-K Literacy Lab program.

100% of Parents

who attended English Classes felt that their communication with their manager and co-workers had improved and that they were better able to speak with and understand their child’s teacher. Our parents also felt more involved and connected with their community after participating in the program.

Number of Students: 172 Number of Volunteers: 18 Volunteer Hours: 160 Student Hours: 9215

Family Focus Parent involvement is critical to the success of the Family Literacy program. Parents set personal and family goals, receive monthly home visits to bridge the gap between classroom learning and home learning, are invited to participate in ESL or GED classes through TLC and CWC, participate in our Language Exchange program, attend four parent meetings throughout the academic year and attend a monthly PACT program where they learn alongside their child in the classroom. One hundred percent of

parents involved in our Literacy Lab program this year said they learned important skills through these programs this year. Some of those skills include understanding what it means to be Kindergarten ready, strategies for reading at home, social-emotional skill building for children, behavior management and routine building for success at home. This led to 100% of our families feeling like their child and their families were ready to enter Kindergarten in the fall.

“TLC has impacted my life through all of the support and opportunities it offers me, and my family. From English classes, to tutoring, to afterschool clubs. I honestly don’t know what would have happened if my family had not found TLC.”

Enrichment Program Student Success Stats: 100% of parents believe that TLC provides a safe and engaging program for their children after school and would recommend TLC programs to a friend.

100% of students

are reading at least two to three times per week at home.

30 afterschool clubs based in 10 different themes were provided during the school year prior to COVID-19 closures.

An Enrichment Story

Meet Ayla, a Kindergarten student who participated in a number of TLC’s afterschool clubs this year, including our Mythology Club. The goal of Mythology Club was to learn the characteristics of Greek myths and while we knew our staff was excited to teach it, we couldn’t quite believe how engaged the students were in this club! Truly, Ayla’s club teacher was completely surprised at Ayla’s excitement and recall of the myths she learned. Students studied the myths of Prometheus, Pandora, and Perseus, to name just a few. They got creative through writing their own Greek

myths featuring their own mythological creatures and brave heroes. According to Ayla, the best part of TLC is “playing with her friends and learning new things.” Ayla fully engages in her work at TLC and loves to express her artistic side. And her enthusiasm for TLC is evident to her parents as well. As her dad told us, “Ayla says her favorite after school activity [of all the after-school activities she’s enrolled in] is coming to Teton Literacy Center.” Clearly TLC’s Enrichment program is achieving its goal of creating a safe and engaging space where students can learn and express their creativity!

Student Hours: 19,052 Volunteer Hours: 291

“For my child, the TLC programs have had a positive impact on his willingness to be creative around other people. We really appreciate the organized program, the wonderful teachers, and the safe (emotionally and physically) learn/play environment you provide. Thanks for all you do!”

– TLC Parent and TCSD Teacher

Success Stats: After 8 weeks, students gained an average of 2.6 months in reading and 1.8 months in math. SOAR is an 8-week intensive summer program for students exiting Kindergarten through 7th grade. Sixty six students attended the program in 2019. In addition to SOAR, TLC also offers tutoring and Practice Kindergarten programs during summer months. One hundred and thirty eight students attended TLC programs during summer 2019. The average student came to the program reading 9 months behind grade level. One hundred percent of students who completed the program saw maintenance or growth in both reading and math scores as compared to the two to three-month skill loss that students face without access to summer learning opportunities nationally.

Volunteer of the Year: Sarah Shea Sarah is in her third year as a TLC volunteer in the Tutoring Program. As a tutor, Sarah is a consistent and encouraging mentor for her elementary student each week! She and her student, a fourth grader named Ulises, have worked with each other for the last two school years. Sarah says that she has loved getting to know Ulises and we know he loves working with her! During their sessions, they work tirelessly to develop key literacy skills and Sarah does an excellent job of navigating those days when Ulises might be too tired to fully focus, keeping it fun and engaging while moving the learning forward. And their hard work is paying off! As Sarah noted, she has seen success in improving Ulises’ motivation to read, “He seems genuinely excited about reading, both at TLC and at home.” Hats off to you Sarah for creating that success! Further, as a tutor Sarah has gone above and beyond, not only working with her student once a week, but also in serving as a sub tutor. She is constantly willing to help out wherever needed, such as a Tuesday this past winter when her TLC Tutor Coach was unable to find a sub tutor for a student during the busy 4:00pm tutoring hour. When Sarah came in for her normal 4:00pm session with Ulises, her Tutor Coach’s last hope for finding someone to sub tutor the other student

was to see if Sarah would do a “group session,” tutoring both Ulises and the other student. Without a moment’s hesitation she said, “Yes!” As her Tutor Coach says, “She is always so willing to take on a new task and help out however she can--it’s amazing.” Indeed, Sarah has always been thoughtful about her role as a tutor and is continuously interested in brainstorming around and strengthening her tutoring abilities! But, wait...there’s more! Outside of her involvement with our tutoring program, Sarah is a TLC advocate. She has sent new volunteers our way and has always been a spokesperson in the community about her experiences at TLC. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and TLC had to close its “physical” doors in March, families and students were left without necessary technology to continue at home learning. Thanks to Sarah’s thoughtfulness and coordination efforts, with ONE 22, 13 BRAND NEW Chromebooks were donated to TLC families via an anonymous donor that she aligned with TLC! We are beyond lucky to have Sarah as a TLC volunteer. Teton Literacy Center could not offer our essential programs if it weren’t for her and all of our wonderful volunteers! From the bottom of our hearts TLC staff, families and students thank Sarah and all volunteers!

2019 - 20 TLC Champions A new initiative this year, the TLC Champion program aims to enhance the understanding of TLC programs among TCSD teachers as well as increase communication and collaboration between the two parties. As Champions, these TCSD teachers took time out of their busy schedules to meet with our staff, learn about our programs and how they could best support us. And they were on board to help with an abundance of end-ofyear needs, such as our Kinder Readiness event and ensuring fellow teachers completed our grant required Teacher Surveys. In sum, they are the ultimate TLC cheerleaders within TCSD and we are so excited to have them on our team!
