Spring 2009 showed record enrollment for John A. Logan College and we have the battle scars to prove it. We continue to receive numerous applications for the summer and fall 2009 semesters and would like to thank all the counselors for having their students prepare early as they get ready to attend college. To further prepare students we have begun planning for our annual high school orientation activities. The dates we will be conducting this activity are listed below:

Now that spring registration is over, the Student Success Center’s activities are in full swing. Tutoring began Tuesday, January 20. We currently employ 13 student tutors and two professional tutors who, between all of them, can provide tutoring in many different courses. From a variety of general education courses, such as General Psychology and English Composition in our individual tutoring program to a variety of biology and math courses in each of our help rooms, we assist students on a first come, first served basis.

In our TRIO program, we are in the process of selecting recipients of our grant aid and foundation scholarships. Grant aid is based on financial need, while scholarships are for improved and high achievement. We are also in the process of planning spring trips for some of our program participants. National TRIO Day is February 28 and this year’s regional event is being held at Rend Lake College. Five students and three staff are planning to attend the event. Other events, such as MAEOPP’s Student Leadership Conference and the National Tutoring Conference in Salt Lake City, UT, are also among the list of expected travels for some of our program participants.

You should receive your letters with the agenda and more specific information by the last week of February. As always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding our new student orientation or any Admissions Office activity, please do not hesitate to contact me at (618) 985-2828, extension 8303 or e-mail at lauralyncima@jalc.edu.

Business is also booming in Disability Support Services. We are currently providing services to 95 students, with new ones being added weekly. Note taking, testing accommodations, and alternate textbooks, are among some of the most requested and utilized services. We encourage faculty and staff to refer students down to our center, so we can assess what types of services would be most appropriate for their individual situations.

O*NET as a Resource

The Student Activities office is hosting the High School Drafting Competition on March 6 and the High School Art & Writing Awards on March 27.

The O*NET program is the nation's primary source of occupational information. The database system includes 275 descriptors about each occupation. This in-depth data is available on O*NET Online, which is a Webbased application that provides user-friendly access to the O*NET database of occupational information. Central to the project is the O*NET database, containing information on hundreds of standardized and occupation-specific descriptors. The database, which is available to the public at no cost, is continually updated by surveying a broad range of workers from each occupation. Information from this database forms the heart of O*NET OnLine, an interactive application for exploring and searching occupations. The database also provides Career Exploration Tools, a set of valuable assessment instruments for workers and students looking to find or change careers. For more information please contact the:
