Hopefully you can share these with your staff and students. We’ll try to send this information to you about every 6 to 8 weeks. Student Success Center Christy McBride-Director The SSC hopes everyone is enjoying a wonderful fall. Things have been very busy here. In our campus tutoring program, we are currently employing 12 student tutors and are providing tutoring services in over 50 possible courses. In our Disability Support Services program we are currently serving over 120 students, providing note taking, testing, and interpreting services, just to name a few. Next, in our TRIO program we are very close to selecting our 200 students for the year. The TRIO grant aims to provide support services to these students in order to increase retention and graduation rates. Support services that are provided include: mentoring, tutoring, transfer and financial aid assistance, cultural enrichment activities, scholarship opportunities, and more. Our retention rate last year was nearly 89%! Lastly, our educational workshops have been in full swing this semester. Seven different topics have been covered in over ten sessions, including, but not limited to, “Test Taking Tips”, “Study Skills”, “Relaxation”, and “Preparing for the Interview.” Our workshops are very popular and well attended. As we near the end of the fall semester, students are already preparing for their services for next semester as they register for classes for spring.

Admissions Lauralyn Cima-Director of Registrar

The Admissions Office is buzzing with activity this fall semester. Registration has begun for the spring 2009 semester and we are already receiving numerous applications for the fall 2009 semester from high school seniors. Any student interested in attending JALC needs to complete an application, send in an official copy of their high school transcript and complete either the ASSET or Compass test through the Assessment Office. John A. Logan College purchased and implemented a new document management system this fall semester and we are currently scanning all new applications, transcripts, and residency documentation into the system, as well as all the old files we had stored. This means all student information is available to staff and faculty at the click of the mouse. We are also able to send copies of curriculum guides and 1

Kuder – Internetbased Assisted Career Guidance An internet- based career guidance system is available to students at John A. Logan College. It offers a comprehensive approach to career exploration, planning, and development. Researchbased assessments help system users to discover their interests, skills, and work values and how those characteristics relate to the world of work. On average, each assessment may be completed in 20 minutes or less. Individuals also have the ability to begin an assessment and complete it at a later time. All assessments feature immediate online scoring and reporting. "Kuder" will assist those who want to make a start in career planning, but are undecided. The program will help you make decisions and select a career, thus saving you time and expense during your educational experience.

Academic Advising Robert Fester-Director

Academic Advisement began in October and is currently continuing. Advisors are now seeing students on an appointment basis. If you have not yet enrolled for Spring semester classes, you should do so at your earliest opportunity. Recently Nita Lowery resigned her position as academic advisor. The job search to fill her position has been completed, and names have been submitted to the College Board of Trustees. Hopefully that position will be filled early in December. Anyone who desires a campus visit and tour should contact Joe Hines in the Admissions Office. He will be glad to set up an appointment to meet with you and show you what John A. Logan College has to offer.
