There is not a driver’s license station in Cheatham County. Residents need to travel to Nashville, Springfield, Clarksville or Dickson to obtain a license. However, the Cheatham County Clerk’s office is working with the Tennessee Department of Safety to offer driver’s license renewals only. The service should be available in the summer of 2013. Tennessee state law allows 30 days from date of residency to obtain a driver’s license. With a valid out-of-state license (or within the 30-day grace period from expiration), only an eye exam is required for a non-commercial driver’s license. Motor vehicles are licensed and registered by the Cheatham County Clerk’s office, 264 S. Main St., Ashland City. The office is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. For more information, call 792-5179. In addition to the main office, deputy clerks are stationed at Community Bank & Trust at 704 Highway 70 in Pegram and at Van’s Hardware at 6355 Highway 41-A in Pleasant View to handle vehicle registration renewals only. The county renewal fee for registration is $75, which includes a wheel tax sticker fee; $40 of which goes to Cheatham County schools and $10 goes to roads. Vanity license plates are $111 for non-commercial vehicles. Commercial tag prices vary but begin at $105.75.
Marriage licenses are available through the Cheatham County Clerk’s office, 264 S. Main St., Ashland City. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. For more information, call 792-5179. The license fee for Tennessee residents is $100; with proof of premarital counseling, the fee is $40. Both parties must be present. There is no waiting period for those older than 18. Two forms of identification are required, one of which must be a photo ID.
