Natural gas line break handled safely at Lamar Middle School By RICHARD COOPER Democrat staff writer richardcooper@ lamardemocrat.com

LAMAR-The accidental puncture of a natural gas line in the construction area at Lamar Middle School just before noon, Friday, prompted the orderly evacuation of approximately 600 children in grades three through eight to the high school gymnasium. The line was no longer in use but still had some pressure in it, which prompted the quick evacuation. A barrier had been set up to shield the line, but the ground gave way resulting in the puncture. Missouri Gas Energy arrived on the scene in a short time and placed a temporary patch on the line. The students were in the high school long enough to eat lunch, and were back in their classrooms by 1:30. Superintendent Dr. Zach Harris commended the students, teachers, and staff on their quick and orderly move to safety.

Butler’s Processing posts Brag Board statistics The following items were recently posted on Butler’s Processing Brag Board. According to Ron Besendorfer at Butler Deer Processing, Robert Selvey brought in the biggest deer this season at 197 pounds and Mitch Shaw brought in the smallest deer at 51 pounds. This was a big year for bucks. Besendorfer added that there were a lot of nice bucks, but not a lot of does. A mule deer was taken in by Megan Duffee. This was a nice 4x4. So far the most deer turned in by an individual has been six deer, all turned in by George McCann. Butler Processing wants to thank everyone for their continued patronage.

CORRESPONDENTS For-getme-nots By GAIL LEAMING

You would think being snowed in I could get something done around here, but it seems that my favorite day of the week to clean house is still tomorrow. The Crawford’s on Friday was cancelled, along with my shop hop. Ron and I ended up in Springfield to get him a new pair of glasses Monday and drove home in the storm around 6 p.m. that night. Fun times because he decided it would be a good night to see the lights on pipeline road at Miller. It was snowing so hard that we missed the light and could hardly see the sides of the road. Those that have known Ron for a long time know how he cannot resist the challenge of driving in mud and snow to see if he can make it. Makes no sense, but somewhere deep inside of him is this feeling to push the line. Clea do you remember how he use to drive the shortcut by Crosses to see if he could make it and how he had to wench his self through sometimes? I bet my kids do. I just have to tell this story. At the Lockwood Thanksgiving dinner I was given $10 in a card for standing and telling everyone what I was thankful for. I told Shirley Mitchell that I didn’t want it but she insisted so I told her I would pay it forward. Now this is pretty hard because I wanted it to go to someone who would appreciate it and pay it forward too. I have a friend in Arkansas, R.S., who I have never met but he gave me a bit of advice that worked. He said that I could go to some place like Walmart and watch or listen and give a stranger the money. I was in Sears Monday and was talking to a clerk while waiting on Ron to get his glasses when we got on the subject of special children. She had a son who had Aspbergers and she lived in Marshfield. Her son went to a special school in Bolivar. The cost wasn’t the busing because the school provided it, but there are always costs that other children don’t have. She praised his teacher who had three in her class but that still was a lot because these children have a hard time focusing when too much is going on around them. This teacher found out that the boy loved lions (from the film Lion King) and when there was a lion (stuffed) on his desk he would buckle down and work. The other two had their own way of focusing. A lot of the special things that these kids needed the teacher paid out of her own pay. Now, having a daughter who is a teacher that does the same thing, I completely understood. The clerk was saying she

wished that she could afford to help this teacher but on her pay (partly by sales) it was not enough to do much. I had found my stranger to pay it forward. I handed her the card with the $10 and told her to pay it forward. So thanks Shirley and Roger, and Kamala (who taught me about these problems) and made it easier to understand, it works if you just stop and listen sometimes to someone else’s story and I was paid a lot more than the $10. What is it they say, when your heart grows 10 times bigger by watching the surprise on the woman’s face and the tears in her eyes as I explained why I was paying it forward. I know that God puts us in places that we need to be, we just don’t know it until it happens. We got an early Christmas present today. Ron got the results back from an AMAS test that was sent to Boston, Mass. to see if he had cancer and it came back that he was okay. Thank goodness we did more testing to find this out and we are thanking God and all that were praying for him. Amen.

There are many cases of flu and lung congestion in the community. So many are staying in since the weather turned bad last Wednesday. The Lions Club was open Saturday mornings for their monthly breakfast; however, the crowd wasn’t as large as usual due to the weather. Sympathy is extended to the family of Glenn Dockery who passed away Saturday morning at Moore Few Nursing Home following a short illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday and burial followed in the Sheldon Cemetery. In spite of the weather the churches were all open Sunday morning, but attendance was reported as being small. The holiday dinner for Sheldon American Legion and Auxiliary, scheduled for December 9, was cancelled. I enjoyed a telephone visit with my former neighbor Kay Briscoe on Tuesday afternoon. She is recovering nicely following surgery and plans to be able to return to her duties at the nursing home. She was able to bring me up to date on her granddaughters, who now live at El Dorado Springs. Thomara is doing fine in

college at Southwest Baptist in Bolivar and Mia is busy with school at El Dorado. Her daughterin-law, Shelley, is improving. It was so good to hear from her. There will be no food pantry in December, which is due to not being able to receive enough donations to support the program. A January 23 pantry has been planned and donations are being accepted. Becky Morgan, city clerk, can be contacted at 884-2621 for information. Monday evening, Dec. 16, the Community Betterment meeting was held at the Sheldon Christian Church at 6:30 p.m., to plan on the Vision presentation with Drury students in January. Jim and Delores brought supper Tuesday evening and came to visit, as I have had lung congestion since last Monday and haven’t been outside. I am beginning to feel better. Sympathy is extended to the family of Delores Cummings. Delores, 85, passed away December 2. Funeral services were held at Chaney Witt Funeral Home in Ft. Scott, Kan. Delores will be remembered as her and her husband, Les, lived in the Bellamy area before moving to Ft. Scott. She is survived by three children, Judy Wilson, Janet White and David Cummings and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Les and son Richard.

We are lucky these ladies make lively music when the Red Hats entertain at Truman Healthcare. The Tractors servers brought appetizers of french fried green beans with dip. The group sang “Happy Birthday” to Annamae Hillsman, Pat Sample and Sue Hobson. The food being ready, Sue Hobson gave table grace. All enjoyed a dinner of delicious fried chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy and green beans. Dessert was a choice of blackberry or peach cobbler topped with ice cream. Following the meal, the ladies played bingo until all had won a prize. Pat Bean was the lucky winner of black out, receiving a large snowman. The meeting closed to meet January 10. I received a letter through the Democrat from a lady who lives in Smithville, Missouri. While at the post office she noticed a newspaper that had been discarded. She stated that as she likes to read, she retrieved the paper. It was the Lamar Democrat. This lady read about the Rebekah Circle in my column. As she is a Rebekah, she wrote me. This lady also tells me that her friend grew up in

Lamar and attended Lamar schools. Her name is Maxine (Gibbs) Douglas, who is 99 years old. Small world. Guess I could tell you about the time I glued a horseshoe to my finger. This happened early in October, but I was so embarrassed I would not say anything. The Rebekah Lodge was to hold their district meeting on Saturday. Since the assembly president’s emblem was the horseshoe and spurs, I had horseshoes for decoration. I had read about decorating horseshoes, so I got the bright idea that I would try it. This was Friday night and the meeting started early Saturday morning.

After gathering up baubles and epoxy glue, I was ready to create a masterpiece. Glue was dripped along the creases, then baubles were placed on horseshoe. Did they stick? No! It was getting late and the meeting was early Saturday morning, so I decided to call a halt and put the stuff away. I was so careful not to touch the crease where I had dripped the glue. Everything was fine and dandy as I gingerly picked up the horseshoe by the sides, but I forgot about the holes as I reached under the horseshoe. I was stuck. I tried to pull it off, but it would not budge. There I was with a horsesee MUSINGS, page 6A

As the weather has been snowy and slick, I have not ventured out much. My news is kinda’ slim. I had my Red Hat on Thursday when Donna Wescott came by for me. We attended the Red Hat ladies luncheon. The Lamar Classi Lassies Red Hat Society held their December 12 meeting at Tractors on Hwy. 160. Cohostesses Sue Hobson and Betty Gideon, assisted by Maxine Rakestraw, decorated the long white covered table in a Christmas theme. A garland of evergreen, tinged with snow, swirled down the center of the table. Large Santas and snowmen made for a colorful display. Favors of a Christmas glass filled with red cellophane holding Christmas candies were standing at each place setting. At 11 a.m., Queen Mother Sue Hobson ex-

Metzger’s Mutterings

By MELODY METZGER Lamar Democrat melodymetzger@ lamardemocrat.com

The Christmas season is celebrated in various ways around the world, depending on the country and region. Elements common to many areas of the world include the lighting and decorating of the Christmas tree, mistletoe, hanging of wreaths, Christmas stockings, candy canes and the creation of nativity scenes depicting the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas carols may be sung and stories told about such figures as the Baby Jesus, Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus. The sending of Christmas cards, the exchange of Christmastime greetings, observance of

fasting and/or special religious observances such as a midnight mass on Christmas Eve and the giving and receiving of presents are also examples of ways to observe the Christmas holiday. Many families practice various traditions that are tied to their Christmas. Some more than others, but I think everyone has at least something that has been passed down to them through several generations, or maybe just a couple. I really didn’t think our family had that many until I got to thinking about it, and come to find out we do! The practice of tree worship was found in ancient cultures. Often trees were brought indoors and decorated to ensure a good crop for the com-

ing year. Trees have also been linked to divinity. The evergreen was offered as a symbol of Christianity, which the newly converted Germans began decorating for Christmas. Prince Albert, who was German, introduced the Christmas tree to England after his marriage to Queen Victoria in 1840. German immigrants to Pennsylvania brought Christmas trees to America. Growing up we always had a real tree, never owning an artificial one until after moving to Lamar. My husband is the son of a fireman and in his world real trees are a fire hazard and a no-no. I still miss the scent of a real tree, but not the mess that comes with it! Of course we have a cat that likes to climb the tree, so we just have a table top tree for now. The Druids believed mistletoe fell from heaven and grew onto a tree that sprang from Earth. Mistletoe represented the joining of heaven and

earth and God’s reconciliation with mankind. A kiss under the mistletoe symbolized acceptance and reconciliation. I grew up in the day where people would go door to door selling mistletoe and our house was never without it. Patron saint of children and sailors, Saint Nicholas, was a fourth century bishop from Asia Minor that was famous for giving gifts to children. English colonists in New York (previously the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam) called him “Santa Claus” because they couldn’t pronounce the Dutch name. In the Netherlands and Germany the Santa Claus figure often rode through the sky on a horse to deliver presents to children. In addition to the tradition of Saint Nicholas, the three wise men gave gifts to the baby Jesus, starting the Christmas gift tradition. Some scholars believe a confectioner developed candy canes to represent Jesus. The shape

Gospel isn’t just about ‘getting forgiven’ but it’s about the transforming power of living by faith in the Gospel. There is nothing in this world more powerful than the Gospel, because it is the power of God unto salvation. It changes lives, paths and destinies. It frees, empowers and restores. It brings wisdom, purpose and peace. It gives clarity, joy and resolve. It brings hope, strength and life. The Gospel isn’t a checklist, an accomplishment, or even just a social relationship contract; being in the Gospel is a way of life, for “the righteous

will live by faith.” I might have been in trouble as a kid, but I now want to be in the Gospel the same way. I want… no, I need… to be in the good news of Jesus Christ. It’s not enough to know about it, be near it, or be with it, because that doesn’t change hearts, attitudes, marriages, dysfunction or stinkin’ thinkin’. Only the power of Christ and His righteousness can defeat those enemies.

The power of a preposition By ROB WILSON Pastor Lamar First Christian Church

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif.-When I was a kid growing up, nothing brought more fear into my heart than hearing the words, “You’re in trouble!” Whether it said by a brother or sister, or being summoned to the principal’s office with those words hanging over my head, it was like my world stopped. Do not pass ‘Go’, proceed immediately to jail. I knew what being in trouble meant. I knew I wasn’t near trouble, or by trouble, or at trouble, or with trouble or from trouble. Whatever I had done was so bad that I was in trouble. What a difference a preposition makes! Prepositions are the words in a sentence that connect and modify another word while indicating location or time. Little words that can drastically change the meaning of a

sentence. Notice the preposition in Paul’s letter to the Romans in chapter 1: I am not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes…. For in the Gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” Paul pointed men to the Gospel to be saved from their sins. But then with that little preposition (in) Paul pointed saved men back to the Gospel so they could continue to live in that power. The

of the “J” was for Jesus, or the shepherd’s staff. The white color symbolized purity, while the red stripes indicated blood. The sending of Christmas cards started in Victorian England. Richard Pease, a variety store owner, commissioned the first printed Christmas card in the U.S. in 1851. London printers Charles Goodall and Sons became the first to mass-produce Christmas cards in 1862. My sister, since I can’t remember when, has made candy cane cookies and it was always a treat to receive them. Haven’t got any this year, but still have time! I also remember many Christmas Eves spent at the Catho-

lic Church for midnight mass. Back then none of the other churches held services. Mom and I attended every year and while we might not have known what they were saying, we enjoyed the rich tradition of the service. Some local churches now offer services, of which I am thankful, and try not to miss a one. Are there any Christmas traditions that your family has observed over the years? If so, I would love to hear them. You can send your Christmas memories to melodymetzger@lamardemocrat.com. Anything you send will be appreciated and possibly published at a later date.

With just three practices removed from a state championship in football the Lamar Tigers hit the hardwood Thursday, Dec. 5 and took on the Golden City Eagles in their annual Lockwood Tournament. The Tigers, coming in as the one seed, faced the eight seed Eagles and looked impressive. Lamar scored early and often and went into halftime with a comfortable 56-10 lead. The depth of the Tiger bench proved too much, as only seven more points were scored from Golden City and Lamar added 26 more, giving them their first win of the season 8217. Lockwood defeated Webb City’s junior varsity squad and took on the fourth seed Tigers on Friday. Lamar’s shots were not falling early on and

they only led 33-15 at the half. Full court pressure dominated the second half as Lamar pulled away with a 65-29 win, setting up a Saturday championship match versus the No. 2 seed Liberal Bulldogs, as they defeated the No. 3 seed Jasper Eagles. The stage was set, the stands were full and the first half lived up to the hype. Lamar was down early, but pulled even and was clinging to a one point lead 25-24 at half. Coach must have fired them up at half because the third and fourth quarter belonged to the Tigers. With a senior loaded Bulldog roster the depth of the Lamar Tiger bench again wore down Liberal and held them to just 12 points in the second half and lit up the

scoreboard, pouring on 34 points in a 59-36 first place win. This was Lamar’s first championship in the Lockwood Tournament since 2005! Lamar was to play Webb City on Tuesday, but the game was canceled due to the weather. The Tigers are looking to Thursday through Saturday in the Seneca Tournament, for more victories on the season. If you get a chance, come out and see the basketball Tigers as this group of boys are ready to impress this year and would love your support. shoe dangling from my left forefinger. I actually had read the instructions where it stated to use oil to unstick the glue. To the kitchen sink I hurried, the horseshoe still dangling from my finger. Grabbing the cooking oil, I poured it on and pulled. Nothing happened except oil was

running down my arm. (That was a minor worry). Finally I grabbed a paring knife and by scraping, pouring oil and scrapping some more, the horseshoe finally came loose after what seemed to be an hour. Were my troubles over? No! I still had a layer of glue on my finger. With

more oil and knife scraping most of it came loose. I said, “Thank you, God”. I have not touched the epoxy glue since that disaster. The saying is, “You learn from your mistakes”. I hope so! Say a prayer for the safety of our military troops. Until next time….

Council wrestles with nuisance structures By RICHARD COOPER Democrat staff writer richardcooper@ lamardemocrat.com

LAMAR-The Lamar City Council’s monthly meeting, Monday night, was dominated by debate, discussion, and frustration over nuisance structures. Condemnation hearings were held on two such structures. The greatest amount of time was consumed by reaching a decision on the disposition of large amounts of debris including building stones remaining at 1801 Gulf. The property owner, Gary Jones of Carthage, has brought down all except two structures on the property, and he declared his intention to repair them. However, the presence of the stones and other debris became a point of dispute, especially when Jones said he would remove it, but it was low on his list of priorities when compared to demands on his time from 20 other properties he owns across the area. Councilmen Tom Shields and Steve Gilkey said he needed to put the property at 1801 Gulf at the top of his list, and Shields urged the council to proceed with condemnation. Jones responded, “If you condemn it tonight, I’ll file suit.” However, calmer heads prevailed, and the council unanimously approved three motions that brought the long discussion to a close. The

first acknowledged that Building Inspector Greg Coats had followed all procedures required in the nuisance structure ordinance. The second required that all debris from the site be removed except the two structures still standing. The third motion required that the two remaining structures (identified as structures one and five during the discussion) be repaired. The nuisance ordinance specifies that 120 days be allowed to complete any orders imposed under its authority. The 120 days will extend to April 14, 2014. The second nuisance structure issue pertained to a garage and shed at 607 Walnut owned by Louise Caruthers. Following acknowledgement of following all ordinance requirements, the council voted to condemn the property and order its demolition and removal. A son, Tom Caruthers, was present at the meeting and told the council the buildings will be demolished and removed in the near future. Again, the ordinance’s 120-day time limit applied. The third property was a house at 1700 Grand owned by Steve Tanner. An extension to demolish the house had expired, and Tanner said inclement weather had delayed completion of the job. The council quickly granted an additional 30-day extension to finish. Sledding on the dam of La-

mar Lake was finally resolved. The council approved it, requiring barriers to be installed and signs to be put in place indicating the rules for its use. They include sledding during daylight hours only and limited it to designated areas. There were three bidders for miscellaneous concrete work during calendar year 2014. None was lowest in all categories, and the prices bid were generally very close. After some discussion, the contract was awarded to Tim Davis. Leisa Blanchard, representing the Change Club, was present to discuss traffic striping

on the First Street overpass to be built in 2014. She asked that space be allowed for a walking and bicycle lane. Mayor Keith Divine said there would likely be enough space to allow such a lane, but since it will be built by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), the decision will rest with them. The change club is a local organization seeking to improve the health of community citizens. The council voted unanimously to accept the city audit performed by Williams and Associates, CPA. It found no material weaknesses in the city’s records. Williams has

been performing the city’s audits since the late 1980s, but this will be the last. The firm has announced it will be discontinuing certain procedures that are required in audits of municipalities. Chief of Police Ron Hager was asked about the success of the Shop With a Cop Christmas tradition for kids held December 14. He acknowledged its success and said between $10,000 and $11,000 was spent during the day in Walmart. All of the money came from donations from businesses, organizations, and private citizens.

Lamar Democrat/Richard Cooper There is no countywide Christmas lighting contest, but if there were, David and Linda Driggs of Irwin would likely have a solid claim on first place. Their tasteful display wraps around two sides of their home. Most unique is simulated falling snowflakes.

Community Health Safety during power outages Needs Assessment results are in Barton County Memorial Hospital (BCMH) collected public health data in the Fall of 2013 to help identify the major health gaps throughout Barton County. The information was gathered through an online and paper survey available at various community venues. With the participation of 259 area residents, the statistics were used to help Barton County Memorial Hospital identify areas of healthcare that are of concern to the community. The survey results allow them to implement a plan regarding programs and services that might be developed or revised, as well as fos-

ter local partnerships to help meet the needs of the community. This survey will be conducted every three years. The hospital would like to thank the public for participating in the survey. They would also like to thank the University Missouri Extension and Barton County Health Department for their leadership in survey implementation and development. To review the full report with results go to the Barton County Memorial Hospital website at www.bcmh.net. If you would like a paper copy of the report please contact the hospital at 417681-5100.

The following is provided by the office of the State Fire Marshall, a division of the Missouri Department of Public Safety. The loss of power and heat for extended periods, often following severe storms and other natural disasters, can create potential safety risks in your home. As families prepare to use generators and alternate heat sources to keep warm, it is essential that they are aware of the risks and hazards involved to ensure personal safety. Flashlights and battery powered lighting should be kept in the home and ready to use during a power outage. Never, repeat never, use candles as a light source. Generators should never be operated indoors and must be well vented to prevent fumes from entering a home. There are some fundamental rules for using portable generators. A generator should only be used outside on stable ground and away from windows and vents to prevent deadly fumes from entering the home through

an opening. Keep the generator dry. Operate it on a dry surface under an open, canopy-like structure. Read the manufacturer’s instruction manual. Dry your hands before touching the generator. Plug appliances directly into the generator or use a heavy duty outdoor rated extension cord. Be sure the entire extension cord is free of cuts or tears and the plug has all three prongs, especially a grounding pin. It is vitally important that you do not connect the generator to your home’s wiring. Power can flow out of your home into the electric system creating a potential fatal hazard for any crews working in the area. Turn the generator off and let it cool before adding fuel. Fuel spilled on hot engine parts could ignite. Always store fuel outside of living areas and away from fuel burning appliances. Make sure the containers are not glass and

are properly labeled You will not be able to use all appliances at once. Some appliances will have to be turned off to avoid overloading your generator’s capacity. Generators should be used in emergencies only and for short periods of time. Refrigerators do not need to run 24 hours a day in order to keep food fresh. Make sure you have working, properly installed carbon monoxide alarms in your home. Carbon monoxide from fuel combustion can potentially be fatal. If the heat goes out in your home, keep warm by wearing several layers of clothing. Close off rooms you do not need to use. Remember to turn off portable heaters when leaving the room or going to bed. If using a fireplace, make sure it has a sturdy screen to prevent sparks from flying into the room. A general caution that should always be observed. Assume all downed electrical lines are live until proven differently.

Horner & Shifrin selected for bridge work in Barton County SPRINGFIELD-Horner & Shifrin was selected by the Barton County Commission to provide preliminary and final design, right-of-way plans and construction inspection services for two bridge replacement projects. Bridge No. 3920002 carries SE 115 Lane over a tributary of North Fork of the Spring River just north of

Golden City. Bridge No. 2190017 carries NW 30th Road over a tributary of Drywood Creek, approximately eight miles northwest of Lamar. Both of the existing structures are two-cell box culverts which seem to suffer from significant driftwood buildup and will be replaced by longer structures with no center supports to create a wider opening and allevi-

ate the driftwood problem. Horner & Shifrin’s project manager, Kevin Skibiski, P.E., S.E., P.L.S., noted, “We look forward to helping Barton County remediate the flooding situations occurring at these bridge locations several times a year. The use of longer span precast concrete sections will increase the flow capacity under the bridges.”

MGE seeks to increase infrastructure surcharge JEFFERSON CITY-Missouri Gas Energy (MGE) has filed an application with the Missouri Public Service Commission seeking to increase the infrastructure system replacement surcharge on the bills of its natural gas customers. The

surcharge first appeared on customers’ bills in April, 2004. MGE is seeking the increase to reflect infrastructure replacement costs made by the natural gas company since January, 2013. These costs for natural gas pipeline replace-

ments and relocations are not currently included in MGE’s rates. The current surcharge for residential customers is $0.96 per month. MGE proposes to increase the surcharge to $1.19 per month.

Applications to intervene and participate in this case must be filed no later than December 31 with the Secretary of the Missouri Public Service Commission, P.O. Box 360, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102. MGE provides natural gas ser-

vice to approximately 507,500 customers in western Missouri including the communities of Lamar, Lamar Heights, Golden City, Lockwood, Sheldon, Jasper, El Dorado Springs, and Stockton.

Citizens take interest in cleaning up Greenfield By CAROLYN HEAD Dade County reporter

GREENFIELD-Mayor Wynes opened the Greenfield City Council meeting on November 19. Roll call was taken and council members Jack Pugh, Vicki Lollar, Bob White and Beth Wright were present. Mayor Wynes kept the minutes in the absence of City Clerk Cathy Harrington. Attorney Rose and his wife Sherry were also present. The November 5 minutes were approved unanimously. Pugh had a question regarding euthanasia of dogs. Andy Miller said that the city has to use a veterinarian so it is all on paperwork for the state. If they are adopted out, state relations regarding spaying and neutering need to be followed. Pugh also had another question regarding crime investi-

gations and an online investigation system. City Police Chief Tim Larkin responded to the question. Next on the agenda was Ordinance 8-2013, a building code program that is renewed every three years. An update is needed for the city before new construction begins. The ordinance was read a second time and passed. A bid of $300 for Midland GIS Solutions to map the city of Greenfield was approved with a motion by Pugh, seconded by White. John and Karen Daniel were on the agenda to speak regarding sewage waste and trash that surrounded their property. They purchased property next to them in order to attempt to clean it up, but after they purchased the property it was condemned. John Daniel commented, “Nobody

came to talk to me, nobody lives in that house, we were going to tear it down, but you know what – money doesn’t grow on trees. I am so over it, nobody cares”. Councilman White replied, “We talked about that last month at our meeting, I don’t blame you, I said give you time to clean it, meanwhile they give you a ticket for it”. Larkin stated that he did not give Daniel a ticket, that city ordinance states he has to be given a written notice. “I told you to give him time to clean it up!” said White, followed with Larkin stating, “We did, we stated he had 30 days to clean it up”. Mayor Wynes interrupted at this point and told John he was sorry for the way the situation had been handled and that he wished he would have come to speak with the council. Wynes

added, “Please come to the council meeting to address problems such as this has become”. Larkin confirmed that the repairs had been done and Wynes determined that the matter could be settled and corrected. There is now a committee working on ridding the city of these old empty homes that are falling apart and causing concerns. There is also a new health inspector on the job. There was an agreement to allow time and be concerned for the way this issue was handled. Pugh told John not to give up, that it is people like him that aid in making progress and making things better. The City Input Committee presented their comments on upgrading the city. There are seven outstanding citizens that meet in the evenings regarding Greenfield “slid-

ing down the hill” and the need for them to claw their way back. John Ewalt said that the city has deteriorated, adding, “We need to all work together, correct the problems, downtown is like a ghost town, the sidewalks are all torn up. I grew up in this town and it is not like it was years ago. I have family that lives here. It hurts me to see the demise the same as it does these young folks. It seems like there should be a way we can all work together and correct the problems as they did years ago. I feel like the meetings we have had get everybody to pitch in and see if we can make it better”. Ken and Ann Sedge spoke on what they liked about the town and the need to see it cleaned up. Tom Hobbs, who lives at the corner of Mitchell and Wells, reported the

neighbor’s house is vacant with multiple problems regarding transients. Nancy Lowe spoke as the difficulty of getting people to assist. She stated that the Main Street Church helped with three houses this summer and that the sidewalks could be a community project. It was reported that Empire Electric had erected a new telephone pole. The need for more streetlights in the city streets was brought up. Jack Pugh stated that he was working with the Ministerial Alliance and the chamber of commerce to coordinate community volunteers. Mayor Wynes thanked the group for their interest and concern and the time devoted to addressing the situation. Attorney Rose advised everyone to proceed cautiously as the meeting adjourned.

Stories, continued from page 1C came home and opened one present (as a tradition), and I went on a drive with my family to look at Christmas lights. When we got home we went to bed. I couldn’t wait for Christmas morning. On Christmas day we opened up our presents (I made my mom some Christmas ornaments, my dad got some pajamas amd my brother got a toy from me). Then we went to my memaw’s house. I love having fun with my cousins (we even snuck some Christmas candy). Finally after a delicious Christmas lunch, it was time for presents! I loved doing it because we were suppose to wait until everyone got a present, but sometimes the littler kids opened their presents before they were suppose to! That was my best Christmas ever! Cameron Sturgell Tips for you! On Christmas eve you better be sound asleep so Santa will come and so you will get enough sleep for the morning. You better be good so he’ll come!
