DEWITT RESIDENT THREATENED A woman called the DeWitt Police Department and reported that a man had come to her place of work and threatened to shoot her son. When she told him that he could go to jail for that, he got mad and left, spinning his tires. The man then went and found her son and had a verbal altercation that turned physical. As he tried to leave the scene, he sideswiped the son’s truck.

On Thursday, April 18, the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce held their April meeting in the PCCUA Community Room. The Chamber of Commerce awarded two DHS students scholarships. The Bill Rasco Memorial Scholarship was presented to Megan Griffie. She was accompanied to the lunch by her mother, Robbie Mitchell. The Wilbur Botts Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Layton McCullars, who was accompanied to the lunch by his mother, Jeane McCullars. Both students gave acceptance speeches and were congratulated by the Chamber. During the meeting, PCCUA was holding their spring fling that was themed “Hoedown.” Gavin Lapine was invited by Diana Graves to join her at the Chamber meeting and play the fiddle. Gavin is eleven years old and in the fifth grade. He has played the fiddle for three years and has played many places throughout the state. Last summer he played in Warren at the Bradley County Pink Tomato Fest and won 1st place in his age group as well as first place overall. Gavin plays with his friend, who plays guitar, in Monticello the first Friday of every month. Carolyn Turner, Vice Chancellor of PCCUA in DeWitt, reported that the college is working with Dana’s House and has formed a transition team. This team will work with students that are

in the age groups 14-16 and 16 to aging out. In May, PCCUA will host a career fair for 8th graders. She also reported that Diana Graves will be hosting a GEAR UP program this summer for 7th and 8th grade students. The program theme will be NASA and will focus on science, math and technology. In June, the college will host a kid’s camp for pre-K to 5th-grade-students. The camp will include trips throughout the state for enrichment programs. Ja Chambless reported that Patillo was back up to full count with one hundred seven students. She also reported that they had gotten a new bus, and they had started the Autism Waver Program. This program helps students with autism learn how to cope in real world situations, such as grocery shopping and other situations at home. The student would receive hands on attention at home to learn how to cope with situations outside of school. The Chamber meets the third Thursday of every month. Local businesses are encouraged to come and join. Membership in the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce offers many benefits. It gives visibility and promotion, provides networking opportunities within the community and provides collaboration and communication. It is not only a way to help your business, but it is a way to help the City of DeWitt.

PCCUA RET Student of the Month

Dustin Danner, who has already earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Spatial Information Systems with a concentration in GIS from UAM, initially took classes at PCCUA and is once again taking classes that are required to complete a Technical Certificate in Renewal Energy Technology. These additional courses are needed for his job at Arkansas Post Memorial with the National Park Service. Danner says he began attending classes at PCCUA while in high school. After ten years of working at dead-end jobs, he returned to PCCUA in 2006. He says that he found it easy to fit in and discovered that the instructors were always willing to help in any way they could. He says that Mrs. Phyllis Fullerton was a God-send the entire time he has been at PCCUA. Danner says, “I would encourage anyone who is considering going back to college to begin at PCCUA because the staff and instructors are excellent!”

The Grand Prairie Quilt Society quilted. She said it took all day just to make the one block. Sherry had three pillows...a Four-Patch Posy pillow, a Breast Cancer Awareness pillow and a Razorback pillow. The meeting then adjourned, and everyone settled down to “Sit ‘n Sew.” Several quilts were started, continued, and planned. Glenda completed the small quilted possible bag demonstrated at an earlier meeting. After a sack lunch, the members worked on their projects until time to go home. A good time was had by all. The next meeting on May 8 at the library will begin at 9:00 instead of 9:30 because of a time conflict. Everyone is welcome. See you there!

for more information. Piano Recital Planned Piano students of Darla Grantham will host a spring recital on Sunday, May 5, 2013. The event will be held in the sanctuary of Gillett First Baptist Church beginning at 3:00 p.m. Each student will perform a song he or she has personally chosen. Refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall immediately following the recital. The public is invited to attend. Gillett EHC April Meeting Held The Gillett Extension Homemakers Club held its April meeting on Tuesday, April 16, at The Paddy in Gillett with Debbie Daniels as hostess. Six members and three guests were present. Club president Margie Hackney was unable to attend, so Rose Ella Smith called the meeting to order. Becki Weinrich read the thought for the month, “What creation is more beautiful, what treasure is more valuable, than a warm encouraging friend?” by William Arthur Ward. Smith read an inspirational message based on Matthew 6:24 about simplifying our lives and spending time on how and what we’re “doing”

with the important people in our lives. Dorothy Connelly presented the program “Clean and Green” in the absence of Anita Trimble, the citizenship, international and community outreach leader. Connelly gave those present handouts on hazardous household cleaning products, understanding “green” labels, cost comparisons of bought and homemade cleaners, and recipes for “green” cleaners of all types. She reminded the group that most “green” products are safer, less irritating, more biodegradable, and use less energy and resources than their conventional counterparts. She emphasized to never add anything to bleach except water. Adding other products to bleach, even vinegar or lemon juice, creates chlorine, a gas that can prove hazardous or even lethal when inhaled. Connelly, secretary, led roll call with the question: “Do you recycle?” Only one person present indicated that she did not recycle with many recycling several types of items. The minutes of the last meeting were accepted without reading. Old

business included discussing the spring council meeting on April 10. New business included the planned trip to McGehee to visit the Japanese-American internment camp museum in Rohwer as well as the memorial cemetery. Several plan to participate. Daniels read the helpful hint: Practice kindness towards the environment. Participate in community cleanups. Reduce air pollution by carpooling, bicycling or walking. Recycle aluminum, plastic and paper. Plant a tree. Weinrich won the door prize. Dorothy Faye Dixon and Arlene Ferguson were also present along with guests, Sue Berry, Muff Christine and Daniels’ sister, Kay Creasey. Jewel Brixie, Thelma Connelly, Hackney, Cheryl Pfaffenberger and Trimble were unable to attend. The meeting adjourned with members reciting the membership pledge. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 21, at 2 p.m. at The Paddy in Gillett with Dixon as hostess.

FAITH & RELIGION Questions About the Christian Faith

When Evil Rears Its Head By Tom Smith It’s just a part of life; the question is “How will we respond to it?” Evil. Ever since the Garden of Eden and the devil’s dangling of his forbidden dainty in front of Adam and Eve, there’s been evil in the world. And, when they succumbed to his tantalizing words of temptation (Genesis 3:1-6), they opened the proverbial Pandora’s Box of sin and suffering that continues to this day. Thus, when terrorists planted two IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) near the finish line of the Boston Marathon last Monday, they demonstrated once again that evil is alive-and-well. And, even though one of the suspects had been cornered and killed as of this writing, the fact remains that lives were forever changed that day when those two bombs went off. And, sadly, this is just the tip of the iceberg of what’s to come. I’m not a doomsday prophet or strong supporter of conspiracy theories, but I have read God’s Word and realize that there’ll be an escalation of evil in the last days. This will take many forms—ranging in scope from a breakdown in relationships, morals, long-held views and values, etc., to increased hostilities worldwide (II Timothy 3:1-7; Matthew 24:4-26). So, again, the question is “How will we respond to it?” For some, they’ll live in constant fear. Many even now are suffering with P.T.S.D. (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder) even if they’ve not fought overseas or been involved firsthand in events like the Boston Marathon bombings. Just watching live newscasts of such horrible events can produce PTSD-like symptoms in folks. Others will become enraged and begin seeing demons under every bush. While becoming proactive in stressful situations is good to a point— keeping us from feeling so victimized—quite often this response can become paranoid and quite aggressive. It can also be quite distrustful and suspicious, particularly of those who look like the terrorists (e.g., believing every Muslim or those of Middle Eastern descent are evil).

But, dear Reader, both of those are extremes. And, we must be careful lest we succumb to evil’s terrors and temptations. In reality, all of this is spiritual warfare. Truly, there are forces of darkness at work in our world (Ephesians 6:12). That’s why it’s important that we recognize it as such and wage war against such evil in the right way (vv.10-18). Without a doubt, we must admit our inability to handle this on our own. For every terrorist that’s captured or killed, there are many others waiting in the wings to take their place. And, no amount of training in anti-terrorism, asymmetrical warfare, the accumulation of bombs, bullets, surveillance systems, etc., will keep evil from rearing its ugly head. That’s why we must “be strong in the Lord and in the Power of His Might” (Eph. 6:10). Simply put, we must cry out “Help us, O God” and realize our utter need of Him and His help. Pride blinds us to this, making us think we can overcome evil by ourselves, but, that’s a lie of the devil and it’s only as we return to Him that we have any hope (II Chronicles 7:14). Thus, we must pray—and pray fervently (James 5:16; I Thessalonians 5:17). Instead of continuing with “business as usual” in our churches, we should “humble ourselves and pray” (II Chron. 7:14a). No longer can we bury our heads in the sand and pretend like nothing’s happened, particularly when the Good Ship USA is taking on water and starting to sink. Then, we must confess our waywardness and change course (repent) lest we soon suffer the consequences of God’s judgment on us (II Chron. 7:14b). Here’s praying you’ll join me in this—for the hour is late and our future hangs in the balance. (NOTE: If you’d like to contact Bro. Tom or receive his daily e-mail devotional, entitled “Morning Manna,” you can write him at P.O. Box 582, Coushatta, LA 71019 or e-mail him at pressingon@hotmail.com.)

The New Birth – Are You Saved or Lost?

Pastor William Wood We could never be asked another question as important as the one above! Are you saved or lost? When I speak of salvation, I refer to the faith needed to leave this earth in the soon coming Rapture. Do you know without question that you will go up to meet the Lord in the air when He comes to resurrect those saved ones who have been in the grave? (1st Thess. 4:16) Have you ever studied the 25th Chapter of Matthew, where Jesus told the story of the Ten Virgins? They were all in a church somewhere and they were all looking for the coming of the Lord. But some went up with the Bridegroom when He came, and some did not! What does the scripture say was the difference between the two groups? It says the wise has “oil” in the lamps, a type of being filled with the “Holy Ghost.” The others were believers up to a point, but had rejected the need to be filled with the Holy Ghost, after they believed! Acts 19:2 Paul said to the Believers at Ephesus, “Have you received the Holy Ghost since (or after) you believed?” They answered, “We didn’t know about it!” What about you church goer? Do you know you must receive the Holy Ghost (the oil) before you are ready for the Rapture? As I ask this question I know that the majority will say “I received the Holy Ghost when my sins were forgiven.” But listen church, if Paul saw the need to ask those Ephesians if they had the Holy Ghost since they were Justified (sins forgiven), then can’t we know that the same wrong teaching about it exists today? Thousands times thousands, who are today ignoring the teaching of Jesus Christ, are about to be cast into the great tribulation period, where they will be purged from their unbelief! And remember, Jesus said those who did not go up in the Rapture were “virgins.” They were not Lost, but they were “foolish virgins,” and had to be brought to repentance for their rejection of God’s word! While the people with the Holy Ghost oil are at the marriage supper with the Lord in Heaven, the Foolish Virgins will be on earth going through all kinds of persecutions. This is to purge them of their unbelief, and put them on their knees before God. The statement I am about to make will be rejected by the majority of church going people and I would not dare to repeat it unless I could read it in the Scriptures. But since it is to be found in Holy Writ, I am duty bound to preach it! Here is the statement “Thousands of church going people are about to be left on Earth when the Bridegroom comes!” Matt. 25:11-12 “Afterward (After the Rapture) came also the other virgins, saying Lord, Lord open to us. But He answered and said, verily I say unto you, I know you not.” Your unbelief will not change this word! Amen.

HISTORY

A Projected Expedition By Don Roth The latter days of March continued with soft spring weather that seemed to curtail disease and invigorate troop encampments around Little Rock. Three Arkansas regiments commanded by Gen. Dandridge McRae were competing in drill tournaments that brought admiring spectators from the city. In the vicinity of Batesville and Jacksonport, the season of spring arrived two weeks later then in central Arkansas, but that didn’t prevent the Missouri Cavalry Division of Gen. J. S. Marmaduke from exhibiting there own martial skill in drill evolutions and sham battles. Their activities at times turned into social events with fair ladies in attendance. District Commander Lt.-Gen. Theophilus Holmes agreed to a proposed raid into Missouri from Marmaduke with

the latter in charge. This Ivy League general graduated from West Point in 1857 after attending a total of three years at Yale and Harvard. His credentials were reinforced by the fact his father was a past governor who probably enabled him to secure an appointment to West Point where he graduated 13th in a class of 38. Thus far in the war his performance was credible, and in January he had utilized the cavalry as an independent striking force. In some ways the military outlook for a strike into Marmaduke’s native state appeared favorable. Federal troops had been withdrawn to bolster Gen. Grants Vicksburg Campaign, and besides, thousands of cavalry mounts couldn’t subsist forever in northeast Arkansas. For the past two months Gen. Holmes expressed reluctance concerning the invasion scheme, but his cavalry chief kept insisting it had

every chance of success until Holmes relented. In addition to forage, both men hoped the raid would yield badly needed arms and recruits. By April 15 most all of 5 thousand cavalry had concentrated on the Eleven Points River near Missouri. Although a strong invasion force, they would be hampered with 900 dismounted men, and 1200 were without weapons. About 900 Texans commanded by Col. G. W. Carter had been ordered up from Louisiana to join the column. They were inexperienced but had the endurance to remain in the saddle for long hours. None had participated in the December Prairie Grove Campaign and were curious to view the Missouri officers they’ve heard about while east of the White River. One private, William Zuber, of the 21st Texas, observed Gen. Marmaduke as a drab figure with yellow hair and complexion who

wore a yellow hat, coat, vest and trousers. Zuber noted he rode a yellowish horse as well. (William Physick Zuber, My Eighty Years in Texas, ed. by Janis Boyle, University of Texas Press, Austin1971, 166.) Captain Joseph H. Pratt’s 4-gun Texas Battery was previously employed on the Mississippi harassing Grant’s supply boats and supplemented Carter’s force. Three Missouri brigades commanded by Colonels Shelby, Greene and Breckenridge were eagerly awaiting the order to move out. The only mounted force from Arkansas was the 5th Regiment commanded by Col. Robert C. Newton. The 23-yearold officer had long been Hindman’s chief of staff. Holmes thought Newton worthy of cavalry command and appointed him on April 12. On April 18 the column was divided and assigned their route of March.

of the force under Col. Carter, accompanied by Marmaduke, moved unmolested over a shorter route to reach Patterson from the south. The town was an insignificant outpost, manned by 600 militia, and occupied a strong natural position protected by a fort on a nearby hill. At 4 A.M. on April 20, when Carter was 30 miles of the town, he sent a detachment ahead with two artillery pieces to seize the post. They took a little-used

road and captured a 24 man picket 12 miles from the objective. At dawn the detachment spied a large returning cavalry patrol. The “duke” should have been present to supervise, because instead of letting them pass quietly into the fort, the Texans undertook a standup battle. The post commander, hearing the firing and shouting, torched his stores and led his troops out at a gallop to Bloomfield. The next morning, Marmaduke again split

his force. He accompanied Shelby to Fredericktown to intercept McNeil. Carter moved east toward Bloomfield, Missouri, and bogged down in unforgiving swampland several miles from town. The day lost in the swamp had given McNeil time to burn his supplies and beat a hasty retreat to Cape Girardeau. At noon on the 24th, McNeil and company filed into the Cape’s impregnable fortifications near the Mississippi.

Marmaduke Raids Missouri

By Don Roth

Brig.-Gen. John S. Marmaduke’s Confederate cavalry division broke camp on the Eleven Points River in Randolph County Arkansas on April 17, 1863, for a raid into the southeast portion of Missouri. All the troops were from that state except Col. George W. Carter’s Texas Brigade and Col. Robert C. Newton’s Arkansas Regiment assigned to Col. John Q. Burbridge’s Brigade. The 5000 man column was accompanied by eight light artillery pieces. It was also encumbered with 1200 dismounted men and some 900 without arms that Marmaduke chose to take along. Gen. Marmaduke determined to move farther east and make his objective the lightly defended garrisons at Patterson and Bloomfield. The latter was commanded by the infamous Gen. John McNeil, known to the Southerners as the “butcher” because of his alleged brutality to citizens. In order to throw McNeil off guard, Shelby with Burbridge demonstrated far to the northwest to a point 45 miles south of Rolla followed by a rapid eastward drive to Patterson. The other half

DeWitt Municipal Waterworks

2012 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report Este documento contiene información importante acerca del agua potable que usted consume. Si no puede leer este informe, por favor pida a alguien que le ayude a entenderlo. We're pleased to present to you this year's Annual Drinking Water Quality Report. This report is designed to inform you about the quality water and services we deliver to you every day. Our goal is to provide you with a safe and dependable supply of drinking water, and we want you to understand, and be involved in, the efforts we make to continually improve the water treatment process and protect our water resources.

Where Does Our Drinking Water Come From?

The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. Our sources of water are two wells that pump from the Sparta Sand Aquifer.

How Safe Is The Source Of Our Drinking Water?

The Arkansas Department of Health has completed a Source Water Vulnerability Assessment for DeWitt Municipal Waterworks. The assessment summarizes the potential for contamination of our sources of drinking water and can be used as a basis for developing a source water protection plan. Based on the various criteria of the assessment, our water sources have been determined to have a medium susceptibility to contamination. You may request a summary of the Source Water Vulnerability Assessment from our office.

What Contaminants Can Be In Our Drinking Water?

As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife; Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals, which can be naturally occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming; Pesticides and herbicides which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses; Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, and septic systems; Radioactive contaminants which can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities. In order to assure tap water is safe to drink, EPA has regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.

Am I at Risk?

All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. However, some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from small amounts of contamination. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791. In addition, EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by microbiological contaminants are also available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline.

Lead and Drinking Water

If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. We are responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

How Can I Learn More About Our Drinking Water?

If you have any questions about this report or concerning your water utility, please contact Allen Chapman, Manager, at 870-946-4261. We want our valued customers to be informed about their water utility. If you want to learn more, please attend any of our regularly scheduled meetings. They are held on the second Monday of each month at 5:00 PM at the Office of Dewitt Waterworks, 428 Court Square.

TEST RESULTS

We routinely monitor for constituents in your drinking water according to Federal and State laws. The test results table shows the results of our monitoring for the period of January 1st to December 31st, 2012. In the table you might find terms and abbreviations you are not familiar with. To help you better understand these terms we've provided the following definitions: Action Level - the concentration of a contaminant which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements which a water system must follow. Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) - the highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible using the best available treatment technology. Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG) – unenforceable public health goal; the level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level (MRDL) - the highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contaminants. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Level Goal (MRDLG) - the level of a drinking water disinfectant below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MRDLGs do not reflect the benefits of the use of disinfectants to control microbial contaminants. NA – Not applicable Parts per billion (ppb) - a unit of measurement for detected levels of contaminants in drinking water. One part per billion corresponds to one minute in 2,000 years, or a single penny in $10,000,000. Parts per million (ppm) – a unit of measurement for detected levels of contaminants in drinking water. One part per million corresponds to one minute in two years or a single penny in $10,000. Picocuries per liter (pCi/L) - a measure of the radioactivity in water. The Delta Cultural Center’s current exhibition, “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War,” examines how President Lincoln used the Constitution to confront three intertwined crises of the Civil War—the secession of Southern states, slavery and wartime civil liberties. Lincoln is widely acknowledged as one of America’s greatest presidents, but his historical reputation is contested. Was he a calculating politician willing to accommodate slavery, or a principled leader justly celebrated as the Great Emancipator? This exhibition provides no easy answers. Rather, it encourages visitors to form a nuanced view of Lincoln by engaging them with Lincoln’s struggle to reconcile his policy preferences with basic American ideals of liberty and equality. This exhibition develops a more complete understanding of Abraham Lincoln as president and the Civil War as the nation’s gravest constitutional crisis. The National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs Office organized the traveling exhibition, which was made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH): great ideas brought to life. The traveling exhibition is composed of informative panels featuring photographic reproductions of original documents, including a draft of Lincoln’s first inaugural speech, the Emancipation Proclamation and the Thirteenth Amendment. An opening reception is scheduled for Sunday, May 5, from 4:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m. at the DCC Visitors Center in con-

junction with the Warfield Music Festival. Additional programming includes the following films and lectures with Civil War themes: May 10 – Showing of the 2012 Steven Spielberg film, Lincoln, at the Malco Theatre; 7:00 p.m. May 15 – Trey Berry, vice president for academic affairs for Southern Arkansas University, will present a program titled “Abraham Lincoln and Arkansas: The President’s Influence and Interest in the State” at the Beth El Heritage Hall; 6:00 p.m. May 17 – Showing of the 1940 John Cromwell film, Abe Lincoln in Illinois, at the Malco Theatre; 7:00 p.m. May 22 - Mark Christ, community outreach director for the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, will discuss the Battle of Helena at the Beth El Heritage Hall; 6:00 p.m. All events are free and open to the public. Contact Paula Oliver at (800) 358-0972 or visit www.deltaculturalcenter.com for more information. “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” will be on display at the DCC until May 31. Delta Cultural Center shares the vision of all seven agencies of the Department of Arkansas Heritage – to preserve and promote Arkansas heritage as a source of pride and satisfaction. Other agencies within the department are the Historic Arkansas Museum, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, the Old State House Museum, the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, the Arkansas Arts Council and the Natural Heritage Commission.

Sixth Annual German Heritage Festival

Saturday, April 20 the Museum of the Arkansas Grand Prairie hosted the 6th Annual German Her-

itage Festival. The event included lived polka music, a German brat luncheon that was provided by the Rotary Club and Kiwanis Club of Stuttgart, a 5K Oopma Run/Walk, and childrens activities. Those in attendance could walk between booths that had been set up under the tent. The

Pottery Guild and Jewelry Guild had booths, as well as Wiederkehr Farms where people could try German wines. There was also a genealogy booth and an antique sale. Along with German wines, those of the appropriate age could try genuine German beer. The day started at 9:00 a.m. with the 5K Oopma run/walk. After the walk, the booths were open and lunch was being served. The children’s activities included a kid’s train, provided by AgPro, potato sack races, and much more. For the older crowd, a grape stomping contest was held. Two teams competed to see who could get the most juice in their bottles. Team one consisted of Haley Fisher, who stomped the grape, and Emla Holsted,

who pushed out the juice. Team two included Dallas Shelton, who stomped the grapes, and Erin Elliot, who pushed out the juice. Neither team was able to stomp out very much juice, and the competition ended in a tie. The German Heritage Festival is held to give the people of Stuttgart and some of the surrounding areas a look into their past and into the lives of the settlers in the area. With a rich cultural background, there is much to learn and enjoy about the history of Stuttgart, Arkansas, named by German settlers after Stuttgart, Germany. Your First Birthday in Heaven If roses grow in Heaven Lord please pick a bunch for me.. Place them in my friend Sonya’s arms, And tell her they’re from me. Tell her I love her and miss her, And when she turns to smile... Place a kiss upon her cheek, And hold her tight for a while. Because remembering her is easy I do it every day... But there’s an ache within my heart, That will never go away. Sadly missing you on your birthday Monica Johnson
