Children’s acting class starts on Sept. 25 TEHACHAPI COMMUNITY THEATRE Tehachapi Community Theatre will hold a children’s acting class directed by Monica Nadon. Students will have a blast while learning the basics of acting for the theatre, which includes audition techniques, diaphragmatic breathing, stage fundamentals, theatre etiquette as well as fun improv games and more. The sixweek course will end with the students participating in a performance for family and friends. Classes will be held on Wednesdays, Sept. 25, Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, from 4:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at TCT’s Second Space located at 431 W. “J” St. (next to the Spirited Bead). Students must be between the ages of 8 and 18. Registration forms may be downloaded from the TCT website, tctonstage.com. Class fee is $75. Checks may be made payable to TCT and mailed to 431 W. “J” St. Students must bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothing and closedtoe shoes. Instructor Monica Nadon has a degree in Theatre Arts from California State University-Fresno and has studied film acting and improvisation in Hollywood.

The 2013-2014 second Friday Old Schoolhouse Lecture Series begins with “The Lives and Times of Billy Mitchell, an American Cowboy,” on Friday, September 13th, at 7:00pm The Mojave Desert, rich with cowboy and Indian legends, was settled by people who celebrated life, ranching, mining and cowboy ethics. Billy Mitchell, fourth generation of one of the founding families of Barstow, is a rancher, cowboy, father, grandfather, great grandfather and resident of Johnson Valley. He will relate his fascinating and compelling story about growing up in the Mojave Desert with his rancher grandfather and stories of his life as a rancher, rodeo rider

and cowboy. Hilary Sloane moved from Los Angeles to Joshua Tree in 2009. Having left a career as a photo stylist and film producer she picked up her camera and began to explore the Mojave desert. While photographing a calendar for Johnson Valley, she met Billy Mitchell and his family. A friendship has been established, and Billy and Hilary are now working together, with his stories and her photographs to bring awareness about the rich cowboy heritage in the High Desert. Admission is only $5, or better yet save $10 by purchasing a season subscription good for all ten lectures for $40. Proceeds help support the Society and the Desert Institute. There will also be an optional dinner with the speaker at 5 pm at the 29 Palms Inn, space is limited and attendees are responsible for their own meal.
