“Five Favourite Fairy Tales” is designed to give young children a fresh outlook on well known fairy tales. All will probably be familiar to the children – in fact this series of activities relies on a certain amount of familiarity, as the intention is to have the children thinking and functioning “outside” the stories.

This is done through the use of structured activities. Teachers will notice alongside tasks either one, two or three asterisks, which denote content levels as in the chart below. These levels require the student to either: Gather Information (Level 1); Use Information (Level 2); or to use their understanding to Create or Evaluate (Level 3). As shown below, they are an adaptation of Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives:

As mentioned, this approach to fairy tales relies on the fact that the children already have a knowledge of the relevant stories. However, this cannot be assumed. It is suggested that prior to any materials being used the relevant story is read and discussed. Note should be made of main characters and some personality aspects of characters, story plot and theme, and perhaps favourite parts of the story.

A major problem with using folklore as the basis for a series of activities is that there are often many different versions of a folk tale. For example, more than 400 variants of the “Cinderella” story have been listed by researchers, and some aspects of the story change according to the country claiming it as part of the national folklore! For this reason it is suggested that a certain amount of flexibility is required in discussing and assigning activity pages. A “bad fairy” cited here might be more familiarly known to the children as a “wicked witch” in their understanding of a story and this could cause confusion. Often children’s knowledge may stem from “Disnified” versions of stories, where characterisations were based on their visual appeal as cartoon characters, rather than the way they were described in the traditional tale.

Arbuthnot, May Hill and contributors, 1971, The Arbuthnot Anthology of Children's Literature, 3rd edn, Scott, Foresman USA.

This well-known anthology is an excellent source book for teachers interested in children's literature. It contains many stories and poems, as well as a variety of comments and viewpoints on the materials.

The following information is given about the versions of the five stories used in the “Five Favourite Fairy Tales” activity booklet. • Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella are from the French version first published in 1697. • Snow White is based on the version put forward by Grimms Popular Stories.

(Interestingly, the Grimm Brothers story contains no mention of Grumpy, Sleepy, Doc, etc. as names for the seven dwarfs, yet children would very likely recognise the characters by those names!)

• Goldilocks was originally written by Robert Southey (1774-1843) as The Story of the

Three Bears. His version has an old woman in place of the more universally known “Goldilocks” who was introduced in a later version by Flora Annie Steel.

• Jack and the Beanstalk is from a version retold by Joseph Jacobs, a researcher in folklore

and the writer of English Fairy Tales published in 1890.

Cinderella the cat. The cat said, “Miaow”, which really meant, “Cheer up! You have something neither of your stepsisters have and that is beauty.”

Once upon a time there lived an unhappy young girl. She was very unhappy, for her mother was dead, her father had married another woman – a widow with two daughters – and her stepmother didn’t like her one little bit. All the nice things, kind thoughts and loving touches were for her own daughters. And not just the kind thoughts and love, but also dresses, shoes, shawls, delicious food, comfy beds, as well as every home comfort. All this was laid on for her daughters by the stepmother.

Suddenly something amazing happened. In the kitchen, where Cinderella was sitting all by herself, there was a burst of light and a fairy appeared. “Don’t be alarmed, Cinderella,” said the fairy. “I am your fairy godmother. The wind blew me your sighs. I know you would love to go to the ball. And so you shall!”

But, for the poor unhappy girl, there was nothing at all. No dresses, only her stepsisters’ hand-me-downs. No lovely dishes, nothing but scraps. No nice rests and comfort, for she had to work hard all day, and only when evening came was she allowed to sit for a while by the fire, near the cinders. That is how she earned her nickname, for everybody called her Cinderella.

The fairy godmother smiled. With a flick of her magic wand, Cinderella found herself wearing the most beautiful dress, the loveliest ever seen in the kingdom. “Now that we have settled the matter of the dress,” said the fairy godmother,

“We’ll need to get you a coach. A real lady would never go to a ball on foot! Quick! Get me a pumpkin!” she ordered.

She remembered what the fairy godmother had said, and without a word of goodbye she slipped from the prince’s arms and ran down the steps. As she ran she lost one of her slippers, but not for a moment did she dream of stopping to pick it up! If the last stroke of midnight were to sound – oh, what a disaster that would be! Out she fled and vanished into the night.

The prince awaits to present you with his engagement ring!” So Cinderella joyfully went with them, and lived happily ever after with her prince.

Step 2:

Invite discussion on aspects of the story, including such things as character assessments of the main characters, value judgements on some of the actions of the characters and emotive statements on the likes and/or dislikes of the children on some parts of the story.

Remind the children of the Cinderella story by either reading or telling the story again.

Step 3:

Step 1:

Divide the class into three groups and have each group write some key words or phrases about a part of the story as allocated. For example: Group 1 might write words about the beginning, e.g. Cinderella lived with her stepsisters and stepmother; she did all the work; they got an invitation to a ball, etc.

Step 5:

The finished pictures should be displayed as a three-panel mural. The key words and phrases could be pasted on to the panels where appropriate.

But although Goldilocks looked so pretty she could sometimes be very naughty. Every day as Goldilocks went out to play her mother would remind her: “Now Goldilocks, you may go and play in the meadow but don’t go into the forest or you will get lost.”

Inside the cottage a fire was burning brightly and a table was laid for breakfast with three bowls of steaming porridge. It smelled delicious and Goldilocks realised how hungry she was. “I’ll just try a little bit to see how it tastes,” she said. First she tried the biggest bowl but the porridge was too salty. Almost all the furniture of the little cottage had been sold to buy bread, until at last there was nothing left worth selling. Only the good cow, Milky White, remained, and she gave milk every morning, which they took to market and sold. But one sad day Milky White gave no milk, and things started to look very bad indeed.

“Yes,” said he, “They are beans, but they’re the most wonderful beans that ever were known. If you plant them overnight, by the next morning they’ll grow up and reach the sky. But to save you the trouble of going all the way to market, I don’t mind exchanging them for that cow of yours.”

For some time Jack walked along very sadly, but after a little while he quite recovered his spirits. “I may as well ride as walk,” said he; so instead of leading the cow by the halter, he jumped on her back, and so he went whistling along until he met a butcher.

He climbed up and up, till after a time his mother’s cottage looked a mere speck below. At last the stalk ended, and he found himself in a new and beautiful country. A little way off there was a great castle, with a broad road leading straight up to the front gate. But what surprised Jack the most was to find a beautiful maiden suddenly standing beside him.

As he drew near to the castle, he saw the giant’s wife standing at the door.

So in Jack went, and the giant’s wife gave him a good breakfast, but before he had half finished it there came a terrible knock at the front door, which seemed to shake even the thick walls of the castle.

But he was so sleepy that his head soon began to nod, and then he began to snore, like the rumbling of thunder. Then Jack crept out from his hiding spot, snatched up the two bags, and though the giant’s dog barked loudly, he made his way down the beanstalk back to the cottage before the giant awoke.

But the giant’s wife told him he was mistaken, and after breakfasting off a roasted bullock, just as if it were a lark, he called out: “Wife, bring me the goose!” The giantess went out and brought in a little goose, which she placed on the table.

The giantess was standing at the door, just as before, but she did not recognise Jack, who, of course, was more finely dressed than on his first visit. “If you please, ma’am,” said he, “will you give me some breakfast?”

But fortunately it was almost time for the dwarfs to come home, and as soon as they came in and found Snow White lying upon the ground they guessed that her wicked stepmother had been there again, and set to work to find out what was wrong.

She knocked at the door. Snow White put her head out of the window, and said, “I must not let anyone in! The seven dwarfs have forbidden me to do so.”

The good little dwarfs pitied him when they heard these words, and so gave him the coffin. The king’s son then asked his servants to place the coffin upon their shoulders and carry it away, but as they went they stumbled over the stump of a tree, and the violent shaking shook the piece of poisonous apple which had lodged in Snow White’s throat out again. Immediately, Snow White opened her eyes, raised the lid of the coffin and sat up, alive once more.

As punishment for the queen’s wicked ways, a pair of red-hot iron shoes was brought into the room with tongs and set before her. The queen was forced to put the shoes on and to dance in them until she could dance no longer. She fell down dead, and that was the end of her.

Once upon a time there was a queen who had a beautiful baby daughter. She asked all the fairies in the kingdom to the christening, but unfortunately forgot to invite one of them who was a bit of a witch as well. The uninvited fairy came anyway, but as she passed the baby’s cradle, she said:
