SMU vs. #20 TCU Good Starts 4 TCU has opened a season with a record of 3-1 or better for the eighth time in Gary Patterson’s 11 seasons as head coach.

Strong Openings 4TCU has scored at least 35 points in its opening four games for the first time since 2004.

Finding the End Zone 4Backup quarterback Matt Brown has played in three of four games this season. 4Brown reached the end zone for the first time in his collegiate career with a 4-yard scoring run for TCU’s final points in the 55-13 win over Portland State. 4Brown does not have a pass attempt on the season but has six carries for 20 yards.

Immediate Impact 4Chuck Hunter started at nose tackle against Portland State, becoming the first true freshman to start for TCU since Kelly Griffin, also at nose tackle, in 2007. 4Hunter finished with three stops and shared a tackle for loss with D.J.Yendrey.

Pick Six 4With Tank Carder’s 26-yard interception return for a touchdown against Portland State, TCU has returned six of its last 15 picks for a score. 4Carder’s interception, which came on the first play from scrimmage after a 66-yard Casey Pachall touchdown pass to Josh Boyce, is TCU’s only pick on the season. 4It was Carder’s second career interception return for a score. He returned a pick 15 yards for a touchdown versus Utah in 2009.

Sack Watch 4TCU has seven sacks the last two games after totaling one in the first two contests. 4Six players have combined for TCU’s eight sacks on the season with Stansly Maponga recording a team-best 2 1/2.

TCU Stands Alone 4TCU is the only school in the nation to have two different players with a kickoff return for a touchdown this season. 4The Frogs’ two kickoff returns for touchdowns have come in the last two games. Greg McCoy went 94 yards versus Louisiana-Monroe, while Waymon James had an 82-yard score against Portland State. 4TCU has two kickoff returns for a touchdown in the same season for the first time since 2005, when Cory Rodgers went 87 yards at SMU and 100 yards at BYU.

Making History 4With two field goals and seven extra-points made against Portland State, Ross Evans had 13 points to give him the Mountain West career kick scoring record with 338 points. Evans moved past BYU’s Mitch Payne (334, 2007-10).

FORT WORTH - TCU scored three touchdowns in a span of 1:18 just before halftime and Waymon James ran 65 yards for a score early in the second half as No. 20 TCU beat Portland State, 55-13. James, who finished with 136 yards on 10 carries, added an 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter - the second week in a row the Frogs returned one for a score. Pachall threw a quick pass to Josh Boyce, who caught the ball near the line of scrimmage and turned upfield for a 66-yard touchdown with 1:55 left in the first half that put TCU ahead to stay. On the first play of the second half, James took a handoff to the right and was quickly grabbed by a couple of defenders. They pulled him toward the ground, but James rolled over on top of one of the defenders then spun away and ran to the end zone. Skye Dawson caught eight passes for 111 yards, while Boyce had four catches for 94 yards. Pachall completed 14 of 20 passes for 214 yards and three TDs.
