2 014 OUTLOOK HORNED FROGS OFFENSE

TCU’s offensive attack will see a new look in 2014 with the addition of co-offensive coordinators Doug Meacham and Sonny Cumbie. Trevone Boykin (6-2, 215, Jr.), one of the more versatile players in college football, keys the offensive returnees. The Horned Frogs welcome back four of their top-five rushers from a year ago as well as five of the top-six receivers. Three of five starters from the offensive line also return.

QUARTERBACK

Trevone Boykin (6-2, 215, Jr.) closed the spring atop the depth chart at quarterback. Boykin was second on TCU last season in passing yards (1,198) and rushing yards (313) while tying for fourth in receptions (26). Boykin was the first Horned Frog in history and the only player in the nation last season with a 100-yard rushing, 100-yard receiving and 200-yard passing game. A Dallas native, Boykin also became the first player in TCU history to lead the Horned Frogs in passing yards (133) and receptions (3) in the same game during a 38-17 win over Southeastern Louisiana. With his 101 yards rushing at Texas Tech, Boykin was the first TCU quarterback since 1987 to run for 100 yards. Boykin’s career-best 11 receptions, for 100 yards, against West Virginia were the most by a Horned Frog in 13 seasons under head coach Gary Patterson. In the 21-17 win at Iowa State, Boykin became the first Horned Frog with three rushing touchdowns in a game since 2009. The following week, he ran for a score, threw for another and contributed four receptions at Kansas State.

Zach Allen (6-3, 194, RFr.), from Temple, Texas, was an early enrollee last spring who redshirted in 2013. He closed the spring in a second-team position on the depth chart. Newcomers Matt Joeckel (6-4, 240, Sr.), Grayson Muehlstein (6-4, 210, Fr.) and Foster Sawyer (6-5, 215, Fr.) arrived on campus in the summer to join the quarterback mix. Joeckel is a transfer from Texas A&M. He saw action in five games, including one start, for the Aggies last season. He completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 293 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Muehlstein, from Decatur, Texas, was ranked as the No. 4 quarterback in Texas and No. 31 nationally last year. He earned District 9-3A Co-Offensive Most Valuable Player honors as a senior. Sawyer was the Star-Telegram Player of the Year. The Fort Worth native completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 2,867 yards with 48 touchdowns and just two interceptions as a senior for All Saints’ Episcopal School. He was the No. 2 quarterback prospect in Texas and No. 13 nationally by Scout. com.

WIDE RECEIVER

The Horned Frogs return a strong nucleus of players at wide receiver. Josh Doctson (6-4, 190, Jr.), who tied for the TCU lead last season with 36 receptions, enters the fall in a first-team position at the Z spot. Doctson had a team-best 440 receiving yards to go with four touchdowns. A Wyoming transfer, he became the first player in TCU history to score a touchdown for the Horned Frogs after scoring one against them (Wyoming, 2011). Doctson had 27 receptions in the final five games after totaling nine grabs in the opening seven contests. He had a career-high eight catches for 92 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown against West Virginia. Backing up Doctson is Jordan Moore (6-3, 221, Jr.), a Big 12 track and field champion in both the 60- and 110-meter hurdles. Moore is a converted tailback who had an impressive spring after being moved to wide receiver. He ran for 87 yards while adding two receptions last season. David Porter (6-0, 197, Sr.) had a breakout season in 2013 and is No. 1 at the Y position. Porter had a team-best five receiving touchdowns, while his 26 catches nearly tripled the total (nine) from his first two seasons combined. His 435 yards narrowly trailed Doctson for the team lead.

JOSH DOCTSON WR, Jr.

Porter had 18 receptions over the final five games after totaling just eight catches in the opening seven contests. His first career 100-yard receiving game came in the 27-17 win over Kansas, when he had four receptions for 118 yards, including

a 75-yard touchdown on the opening play of the second half. Cameron Echols-Luper (6-0, 190, So.) and Griffin Gilbert (6-5, 220, So.) are behind Porter at the Y spot. Echols-Luper earned Freshman All-America honors as a punt returner. He totaled four receptions on the season while also completing both his pass attempts for 49 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown against Texas. Gilbert is a converted tight end. He played in just two games last season before being sidelined for the year by injury. Ty Slanina (6-0, 193, So.) and Deante’ Gray (5-10, 175, Jr.) are at the H receiver position. Slanina totaled 19 receptions as a true freshman in 2013. He had a season-best and team-high six grabs at Oklahoma, while his 20-yard touchdown catch versus SMU provided the Horned Frogs with their go-ahead score in the game. Gray split time last season between receiver and cornerback. He was second on TCU with his 19.5yard average on eight receptions. In the Horned Frogs’ 21-17 win at Iowa State, Gray started at cornerback for injured All-American Jason Verrett and did not allow a reception. Ja’Juan Story (6-4, 208, Jr.) and Kolby Listenbee (6-1, 183, Jr.) will enter the fall in a battle for the first-team nod at the X position. Story averaged a team-best 21.7 yards per catch on his seven receptions for the year. He closed the campaign with a season-best three catches against Baylor. Listenbee is a two-year letterman with three career receptions. He’s also a sprinter for the TCU track and field team.
