chicago children’s hospital

chicago, il [objectives] :

This Chicago Children’s hospital is located in a medical district of the city, but has a site condition unlike any other buildings on its block: Mies Van der Rohe Way intersects Chicago Avenue directly in front. This allows for views down the street from the hospital as well as a straight-on view of the hospital from several blocks away. My approach to the design of this children’s hospital was to give the children a sense of escape from the hurt and fear a hospital can possess. Every patient room as a window facing into the city as well as towards the river. There are multiple small public balcony spaces and a large scale exterior cafeteria. The lobby and other programmatic spaces possess a “building block” theme. This is symbolic of building from strength and getting better as well as intriguing the children visually and helping them not feel overwhelmed in these large spaces.
