Notes Aisle Seat was born on a flight home from a drum corps camp many years ago. At the time, I had a student who was a good player but didn’t fully understand how a quarter note pulse related to certain rhythms. She had a drumset, and I would always suggest using the bass drum or hi-hat just as she would tap her foot. Armed with this knowledge, I decided to write her a solo that would incorporate an audible pulse to help her practice! I was sitting in the aisle seat of an exit row while jotting the basic concepts down on paper, hence the name. The use of polyrhythmic ideas—two against three (2:3), three against two (3:2), four against three (4:3)—along with some basic duple to triple relationships makes this a fun solo for the beginning to intermediate player that will help reinforce basic knowledge of the pulse and how various patterns relate to it. 3

These rhythms are often confused, so I wanted to juxtapose them in order to reinforce the correct interpretation of each type of rhythm. Remember to play from the bottom up! This means that the foot should be in charge of the tempo, and what is going on with your hands should always relate to the pulse of the kick drum. Be mindful of the stickings and dynamics, and be sure to work with a metronome! Some performers may find it beneficial to work the kick drum patterns separate from the hand patterns and then put the two together. A variety of marching or concert snare drums may be used to perform this piece. The volume of the kick drum part should closely match the snare drum volume in order to achieve the right balance. Lastly, Aisle Seat can also be played as a duet with one player performing the snare drum part and the other the bass drum part. Happy drumming!

Dynamics A fractional dynamic system is used throughout the piece to denote the volume differences in parts containing fast changes between taps and accents. For instance, a f//mp marking at the start of a passage would indicate that the accents are at a forte volume while the unaccented notes (taps) are to be played at the mezzo piano volume.
