And we’re not sunbathing! artsNK’s teams will be hard at work over the summer months, organising Summer School, consulting with the public, seeing sculptural commissions come to fruition, developing our innovative aerial dance programme, and continuing to develop The Nettles, our eco-art area by the river Slea. INSIDE OUT: My Story from Alison Walling Having spent a long time teaching arts and other skills to people of differing ages and abilities, artist Alison Walling responded in 1998 to the appeal for volunteer help to develop the arts and conservation space known as The Nettles by the River Slea in Sleaford. Little did she suspect that this involvement would lead to a new career focus and even greater involvement in the future. Since then, Alison has gone on to develop her skills in a wide range of willow work, including basic basket making and sculpture, which involves her in teaching and working to commissions across the county. An interest in horticultural means that Alison also grows much of the willow which she uses in her work: As a great admirer of willow in all its many varieties and forms, I am keen to see species once cultivated widely in Lincolnshire growing again, whether for coppicing as a resource, for amenity, for wildlife or for one of the many other good reasons to grow willow. Having worked for artsNK on the Cultural Olympiad and having been Artist in Residence at Whisby Nature Park, Alison is keen to continue her involvement with creating sculptural outside spaces. In speaking of The Nettles, she says: This is a good example of how living willow can create an environment on a large scale in a public space, providing ‘rooms’ for outdoor workshops, habitat for wildlife, a resource for workshops and even shelter and sticks for dog walkers. Her current work with The Nettles volunteer group has seen a range of willow fish being created to decorate the fence around the area. How does she feel about her partnership with artsNK? It has been of enormous importance for me. It’s thanks to them that I’m even working in this area now and they have supported me throughout. artsNK - Experience Great Art COMING IN TO LAND: Aerial Rig finds a home
artsNK’s aerial rig, a circus structure with silks and hoop equipment suspended from a height of 5m, has found a place to live! The rig is now erected in its semi-permanent home at North Kesteven Centre in North Hykeham, until December 2014. In the interim, the dance team is building an aerial dance development programme, featuring weekly classes for young people and adults, as well as one-off specialist workshops and masterclasses with visiting aerial companies and artists. MADDness STRIKES AGAIN! Summer School 2014
Whatever weather the summer brings, the last week in July will bring artsNK’s brand of sunshine into the lives of young people at NK School as the 2014 MADD Summer School bursts into life. From 28th July to the 1st August, young people between the ages of 8 and 14 will experience daily workshops in dance, drama and music, working together to create an entertaining and educational piece of performance to show to invited parents and friends. Funded by NK School, the Summer School offers these opportunities to young people who have little or no experience of the arts, in turn signposting them to other artsNK activities. YOUR VIEW COUNTS: Villages Consultation Programme The artsNK team together with NCCD and Design Factory will be visiting Ruskington (June 27 and 28th) and Billinghay (Saturday 19th July) to ask residents what arts and crafts experience they would like to see provided in the future. The plan is to bring a mobile exhibition and programme of workshops and demonstrations including woodcarving, mosaic, street dance and vitality music and movement, so that residents can be inspired to take a greater part in future activities. Details of the programme of activities will be posted on the artsNK website and distributed in the villages. These first events mark the start of a commitment to go to all of the district’s main villages over the next three years to make sure residents are aware of what’s on offer and can inform what’s provided in the future. artsNK - Experience Great Art ECO 2: New artwork for Sleaford
Commissioned artist Michael Condron will see his beautiful new sculpture unveiled at the entrance of the Eco 2 power plant in Sleaford in early July. Having led design workshops with pupils from Kirby la Thorpe Primary, Kesteven and Sleaford High School and Sleaford residents, Michael has incorporated many of their ideas in the final stainless steel design. BEYOND THE BLUES: Improving mental health Last year, artsNK’s Visual Arts Development Coordinator, Marion Sander, was approached by Debbie Jones, leader of the Sleaford mental health support group ‘Beyond The Blues’, who wanted the group members to learn some mosaic techniques. After some practice sessions, BTB members created a series of mosaic markers depicting the variety of predominantly fruit trees that were planted in ‘The Nettles’ during 2012-2013. There will be an official unveiling of the markers at the end of June/ beginning of July, although a date has yet to be set.
