Marketplace Historic Building Bill Making Its Way Through Texas Legislature A bill introduced by State Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr., to help preserve historic buildings across Texas was unanimously passed out of the Senate in March. Senate Bill 111 requires the Texas Historical Commission to designate certain buildings as “Texas Historical Use Buildings.” This designation is to be given to any Texas building that is considered worthy of preservation because of its history, culture, or architecture. Additionally, a building must have been used for at least 150 years for a purpose that benefits the community in which it is located, as determined by the Commission. If the bill passes into law, these buildings would be eligible to apply for grant funds through the Preservation Trust Fund, which provides financial assistance for the acquisition, survey, restoration, or preservation of historic buildings, as well as for planning and educational activities leading to the preservation of historic property in the state.
