Listening to Our Customers

uring the 50th Anniversary celebrations during 2017, we remembered and reminisced about the successes that the Simmental breed has experienced in Canada. It was great to connect with cattle producers and relive some of the past, however we should never attempt to live in the past. Perhaps it is a fitting time to bring out the crystal ball and try to predict where we see the Simmental breed and the Canadian beef industry in the future. One thing many will agree on is that as a whole, agriculture will continue to be challenged on the ways we produce food. As part of that, the livestock industry will be held to a higher set of standards with regards to production, efficiencies, and management practices. We can try to live in the past and say “we have always done it that way” however, this will lead to certain failures as the pressure is not going to go away. We need to realize that while we as producers feel strongly about what we do, and at times want to defend traditional practices; we need to accept that public perception is never totally wrong. The consumer is our customer and they will speak with their wallet. Collectively, they are also a group that greatly outnumbers farmers and ranchers both in societal voice and political presence. Some specific traditional practices that will continue to see increased pressure include hot ironbranding, dehorning, and castration techniques. Dehorning is a process that is very easy to eliminate as it can be done genetically in just about all breeds, and as a result we can expect to see a continuing decline in demand for horned cattle genetics. I had a discussion with a seed-stock producer who informed me that horned cattle were still 8

needed in the industry because polled cattle didn’t have enough “real muscle” in them. I have heard that same tired reason for decades from people who choose to ignore that the industry was changing by reducing the amount of horned genetics being bought in all breeds. It is easy to become out of touch if we simply refuse to listen and be aware of the changes happening around us. Many in the beef industry would agree that the North American cowherd will struggle to get any larger because of these pressures along with other factors. While Simmental will continue to influence the Canadian beef cowherd in a significant way, it remains to be seen if we will increase the Simmental presence overall. I believe we can continue to grow as a breed providing the Canadian Simmental Association and Simmental breeders remain focused on the profitability of the grassroots producers. We need to listen to our customers and to anticipate where the industry is headed to remain relevant. We also need to strive to improve our genetics and the profitability they can deliver on a more consistent and broader basis. There are no better places to take the pulse of the industry and meet producers than at some of the Beef industry conferences held across the country, or at the local auction mart or sale barn. Take an afternoon and attend some sales to watch your customer’s calves sell. Take time to attend your veterinarian’s animal health information evening and make some new connections. All these opportunities allow us to better educate ourselves and to get a pulse on the industry. Listening to our customers is essential to another successful 50 years of Simmental in Canada.

Breed Improvement

What to Expect with ASA’s New Genetic Evaluation System BOLT

C

hange can be a scary concept to some yet sought after by others. Many ASA members and International Genetic Solution (IGS) partners wonder about the changes on the horizon once BOLT is fully implemented. That change may be nerve racking but in reality, things should change. Why invest in new and improved methods if you get the same answers? Here are key changes to expect with the new genetic evaluation: 1. Movement of EPDs and reranking. EPDs will change especially in younger, lower accuracy cattle. Members should expect movement in lower accuracy cattle, as seen in the existing evaluations, because they may have new progeny data reported. Some cattle will move in a favorable direction while others will do the opposite. Keep in mind even if the EPDs get worse, the prediction of them is more accurate. With enough calves and phenotypes, the current evaluation would eventually arrive at a similar EPD as BOLT, it just would take longer or more information in the current system. With BOLT and the new genetic evaluation methodologies, we will have more accurate EPDs earlier in an animal’s life. 2. More accurate accuracy. This idea takes a little time to sink in. The accuracy reported for each EPD will be a directly calculated and thus closer to the “real” accuracy. The methods to solve accuracy directly are extremely difficult and take a lot of computer power. In the current evaluation, it is not possible to solve for accuracy directly so an approximation method is used to estimate accuracy for each EPD. There are inherent flaws with approximating the accuracy which until BOLT were just part of the evaluation. Now with BOLT, the accuracy reported with the EPD will be more reliable. 3. Reported accuracies will tend to be lower. Again, this is a little confusing at first and sounds like the opposite of what was just explained. The EPDs will be more accurate. The accuracy reported will be more accurate. Both statements are still true. However, one of the inherent flaws in the approximation methods used to find accuracy in the current evaluation, and in all evaluations not produced through BOLT, is they tend to bias the accuracies upward, especially for younger animals. This was known for a long time, but there was no way to calculate the accuracies directly. With BOLT, having accuracy directly solved results in a more reliable accuracy but that accuracy will often be numerically lower than the current evaluation would predict. However, the new reported

22

by IGS Genetic Evaluation Team

accuracies with BOLT should better represent the possible changes for the EPDs. 4. DNA testing will have a larger impact. With the switch to BOLT, IGS will use Single Step genomic evaluation on all EPDs (currently using Single Step for Stayability EPDs). Single Step uses the DNA markers, pedigree information, and phenotypic data simultaneously in the prediction of the EPDs. Previously molecular breeding values (MBVs) were calculated from the genomic information and those MBVs were blended separately into the EPD prediction. The Single Step method squeezes more information from the DNA markers than the previous approach allowed. Also, there are biases inherent in the blending process that aren’t a problem with the Single Step approach. Additionally, with Single Step, the genomic information will not only enhance EPDs for the genotyped animal but also will be used in the EPD estimates of relatives. 5. More frequent genetic evaluation runs. With the horse power behind BOLT, IGS can run genetic evaluations much more frequently than the current system allows. This has many benefits. It allows members to get more immediate feedback after submitting their records. If members miss a deadline, the next deadline for data won’t be far away. It allows for more accurate EPDs throughout the year and faster incorporation of the genomics. The down side is the EPDs put in print will quickly be outdated.

Genetic evaluation is not stagnant. There will always be improvements as new research in animal breeding, genomics, and statistics advance. BOLT is revolutionary in the innate flexibility, the computational power, and the statistical methods made possible using this software. Embrace the change to a new and improved genetic evaluation, it’s coming! earning about proper livestock management, proper herd health, and marketing techniques — these are a few of the many skills Blair McRae learned a few moons ago during his involvement with the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA). Those are all good things.

Blair McRae

Learning during his years as an YCSA member, to have the confidence to effectively communicate with people was perhaps the most important skill benefiting the southwest Manitoba farmer in his lifetime career as a purebred beef producer. “I grew up in the livestock industry and was always around cattle, but I was a fairly shy kid,” says McRae. He along with his family members own Mar Mac Farms near Brandon, Manitoba, which is a fourth generation livestock operation producing Simmental and Angus purebred cattle. “When we as a group of “Those seven pillars young Simmental breeders are still key to the first sat down in 1980 to create a mandate for the organization today. Young Canadian Simmental However, it was in the Association, we came up with seven key pillars that we process of all this, and wanted the new organization then being involved to focus on,” he says. That with the program you included herd nutrition, herd and farm management, learn how to talk to financing, herd health, people, learn how to judging and fitting cattle, marketing, advertising and communicate.” genetics.“Those seven pillars are still key to the organization today. However, it was in the process of all this, and then being involved with the program you learn how to talk to people, learn how to communicate. That’s important in any career, but certainly in the purebred livestock industry it’s important to have the confidence to talk to people. That wasn’t one of the seven original proposals, but it was certainly a valuable spin off benefit.” Brett & Melissa showing at the YCS show in Hamiota

McRae was born and raised on the family farm. He has been involved with purebred Angus cattle for 62 years and purebred Simmental cattle for 41 years. Today, McRae along with is wife Lois and children Brett and Melissa run about 270 head between the two breeds. He recalls back to 1980; the Canadian Simmental Association had been operating for roughly 10 years, and there was discussion about the value of a new organization focusing on young beef producers. McRae was 20 at the time. “We didn’t want it to be just a youth organization within the CSA,” he states. “We wanted it to Blair in blue on left at the YCS tour at have its own identity, Cedar Ridge Farms 1981 structure and bylaws.” Along with McRae, other young Simmental producers that gathered for that first meeting were Barry Gilbert of B.C., Darrell Rothlisberger, Bruce Bieber and Deanne Groeneveld of Alberta, Rick McIntyre and Ken Alexander of Saskatchewan and Lynda Bere of Ontario. These were all young producers between the ages of 18 and 23 from their respective farming operations. Helping to guide the discussions were long-time Simmental breeders Earl Ballard from Saskatchewan, Alex Mills of Alberta, and Ted Pritchett, breeder and later publisher of the Simmental Country magazine. They all met at Highfield Stock Farms near Okotoks, Alberta just south of Calgary. “It was planned as a twoday meeting,” says McRae. “During the first day, there Brett showing his YCS heifer in the was a lot of discussion and YCS show at Ag Ex ideas floating around. Near the end of that first day when we really didn’t have any firm ideas about anything, Mr. Pritchett said “why don’t you young people go back to your hotel, think about this some more, and come back tomorrow with some proposals about what you think this organization should be.” “So we did and we talked about it that night,” McRae says. “I think the next day we surprised ourselves because we came back and were able to present seven specific proposals as well as a governance structure.” This was the start of the Young Canadian Simmental Association. Today the YCSA is an organization with a membership age range that goes until your 25th birthday, with active provincial organizations in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada.

Brett, Melissa, Lois and Blair McRae

McRae says that while many of the young beef producers then, as well as today were involved in the 4-H program, which had strong emphasis on showing cattle, “We wanted the YCSA program to expand on that. I sometimes describe YCSA as 4-H on steroids. It goes beyond just showing cattle.” Through a number of programs and events at the provincial and national level the YCSA helps educate young beef producers about overall livestock management, as well as herd health and nutrition. And more specific to the purebred industry it provides young producers knowledge and hands-on experience with judging and fitting cattle, herd genetics and practical experience on how to develop marketing and advertising programs. While McRae himself has passed the age maximum for YCSA membership, his two children were involved until their mid-20s. Blair continues to be involved with the Canadian Simmental Association and also serves as Chairman of the YCSA Review Committee. While membership in the YCSA has its ebbs and flows over the years, McRae says currently there appears to be strong involvement in most provincial and regional organizations across the country. British Columbia is the only inactive jurisdiction at the moment. Each provincial association works to deliver programming involving the original YCSA proposals, but they also each organize their own events and activities. Manitoba, for example, early on organized a tour of purebred and related operations that was not only educational, but fun for 35 YCSA members. Today there are annual show and sale events — Alberta has the Wild Rose Classic, Saskatchewan the Tiger Lily Classic, Manitoba has a Youth Beef Round-Up, there is the Ontario Trillium Classic, the Quebec All Breeds Junior Show and the Maritime YCSA Classic. Other programs include workshops on marketing, livestock photography and team grooming programs have also proven to be popular across Canada. Melissa showing at YCS show with Dad looking on

“The foundation of the program is much the same as it was when originally planned in 1980,” Melissa at YCS says McRae. “But it has evolved with the industry too.” The YCSA program started before EPDs and other genetic tools were common to the industry. Today those

are important herd improvement topics included in the YCSA program. As well, marketing techniques are changing. Developing print advertisement is still important but programs today also include marketing Manitoba YCS through social media and electronic marketing services. “We really appreciated the value of electronic marketing within our own operation last year,” says McRae. “Our annual sale is in March, and March 8 was at the end of a three day blizzard. We had a few buyers who braved the weather and showed up at the farm, but we were prepared with videos for an internet sale and many were sold on-line. Everything went well despite the weather. So the young people are learning about the value of new marketing tools.” As young people learn more about livestock production and management practices, as well as the purebred industry, McRae says they can’t help but learn improved “One of the communications skills that will help in overall objectives their own operations and in all dealings with the industry. The YCSA program of the program has contributed to the careers of several is to encourage industry leaders. Among the YCSA alumni are Bruce Holmquist, General Manager young people to of the Canadian Simmental Association, become involved Rick McIntyre and Fraser Redpath, both past CSA Presidents.

and continue with the purebred industry.”

The YCSA held its first Leadership Conference in Calgary in 2017 and the second is planned for this coming February. The TEAM Conference (Together Everyone Achieves More) is scheduled for the Best Western Port-O-Call Inn in Calgary February 22 to 24. “One of the overall objectives of the program is to encourage young people to become involved and continue with the purebred industry. Along with that the program will help develop the next generation of leaders not only for the Canadian Simmental Association but for the livestock industry,” says McRae. “As I look across our organization today I see many who have been involved with YCSA are taking on those leadership roles.”

Brian McCar thy Brian McCarthy grew up on his family’s farm near Moosomin, Saskatchewan. His parents had a mixed farming operation with commercial Hereford cattle. He was the oldest son with one other brother and two sisters. From a young age he had a keen interest in cattle and breeding programs. Brian married Sharon Gall in October of 1979. They had two sons and a daughter. The children all received University degrees and are all doing well in their chosen fields outside of Agriculture. Brian and Sharon have two grandsons and a granddaughter. Brian realized that their commercial cattle of the day needed more milk and performance. Simmental cattle were being imported in the early 1970’s and seemed to cross very well with the Herefords of the day. He decided he wanted to be a part of all this excitement!Brian has been involved in the Simmental community since the 1970’s. He has judged many Simmental shows in most Canadian provinces and also was involved in many local and regional 4-H shows. Spring Creek Simmentals has consigned cattle to many sales and has also purchased cattle at a number of sales. They have shown cattle at Agribition and Manitoba Ag Ex through the 1980’s and 1990’s. A highlight for him was winning “Premier Breeder” and “Premier Exhibitor” awards for consecutive years at the Canadian Western Agribition. Brian has sat on a number of boards over the years. He was apart of the Crossroads Simmental Association for many years as a director, including a term as President. He was on the Saskatchewan Simmental Association board as a director for six years, as well as the Canadian Simmental Association board as a director for six years, with two as being President. He also sat on the Saskatchewan Beef Cattle Performance Testing Association, Regina Bull Sale Committee, Agribition International and Commercial Cattle Committees, Moosomin Curling Club, Recreation Board and Golf Club. Spring Creek Simmental’s herd has evolved from the traditional purebred with a Fleckvieh influence to one that is solid colored, red and black purebreds. They have developed a successful on farm bull sale. They have proudly placed herd bulls into many of Canada’s elite breeding establishments. They also have a yearly female sale, where the cattle are eagerly sought after. They have also developed a purebred Black Angus herd to complement their Simmentals and to offer a wider range of genetics to their customers. Spring Creek cattle have received many ribbons and banners over the years, but the most gratification comes from having genetics that are highly sought after and are contributing too many top notch commercial and purebred operations.

Fred Reicheld When it comes to breeding high quality cattle, everyone knows that it is in your blood. For Fred Reicheld, there is no exception. He was born on March 23, 1943 in Simcoe and continues to reside at the family farm located near Jarvis, Ontario. He attended Ridgetown Ag College and graduated in 1962, although much of his education like many has come from farm operation. The modern day operation raises cash crops, breeds Simmental beef cattle and is a fulltime Holstein dairy cattle operation. In 1973, he married Sally and over the years the family has raised four children – Andrea, Nathan, Drew and Paul who along with their spouses – Clay, Erica, Kendra and Nicole have added eight grandchildren. His start in life came shortly after Jarvis Hereford Farms Ltd. began breeding Hereford cattle in 1940. He first saw the bright lights of the city of Toronto in November 1950 as an exhibitor of Herefords at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair although as history will illustrate both his father and grandfather were staples of the industry for many years prior. We as Simmental breeders have “Jarvis Simmental” to thank as one of the pioneers of the breed in Canada. They first imported and began breeding Simmentals in 1970 and the record books at the Canadian Simmental Association for the operation are stamped August 13, 1971. Their first registration into the Canadian Herd book was a horned Fullblood “Jarvis Christine” born on April 28, 1971 and carries the registration number 812. Over the last 46 years, the operation has bred thousands of animals into the breed and officially registered 468 pedigrees with the Jarvis prefix and JSL herd letters. In the show ring, they have exhibited Simmentals at local fairs since 1972 with large success. Annually they made the trip to the Royal up until 2000 where too they have achieved champion status with both bulls and females. As breeders, Jarvis is credited not only as an importer but also as an exporter from time to time. Today, the operation continues to thrive with his son Paul working alongside Fred in managing the farm. They continue to add to the collection of Simmental cattle purchasing both Red and Black Simmental from across Canada and the United States. They also are continuing to share the Jarvis prefix with others selling both bulls and heifers privately and as guest consignors in annual production sales.

Don Godfrey Don Godfrey was born on December 30th, 1955 as the oldest son of Harold and Audrey Godfrey of Cornwall, Prince Edward Island. Don had a passion for the farm life and worked alongside his father starting from a very young age. In 1978, Don formally partnered with his father Harold on the farm at the age of 22. The operation was farming about 900 acres, maintaining a herd of purebred Hereford beef cattle for a total of 175 head, as well as a 50 head sow herd of hogs with a farrowto-finish operation. The farm also grew about 200 acres of seed potatoes, 300 acres of grain and about 100 acres of hay land. In the 1980’s, Don and his father Harold began to introduce Simmental bulls into their herd in order to boost frame size and generate higher value carcasses. In the late 1980’s, Don decided to expand his potato operation by 100 acres, forgo the hog operation and begin building a purebred and registered Simmental herd. In 1992, the farm sought more marketable and performance-enhancing genetics by purchasing a bull from Bar 5 Simmentals. The resulting progeny from this purchase saw Harold return to Bar 5 for another purchase in in 1994. As the herd grew, so did the success in the show ring and ultimately upon the bottom line of the operation. Don has been a strong proponent of using bulls from Central and Western Canada and has regularly purchased his herd sires from Lewis Farms now since the early 2000’s. After his father Harold’s passing in 1998, Don took over the operation alone with the help of some hired help, his wife June and his young sons pitching in when they were not in school. Today, Don, alongside his youngest son Michael, are calving 50 Simmental full blood and purebred Simmental cows and running a small feedlot operation that mainly consists of Simmental influenced cattle for a total of about 200 head. In addition to the cattle, he is also farming 300 acres of seed, table and processing potatoes, 350 acres of grain, 200 acres of soybeans and 300 acres of hay land. In his rare spare time, Don has regularly been involved in his community and various organizations. He currently serves as the Maritime Simmental Association President, the Past President of the PEI Easter Beef Show and Sale, and Director on the PEI Government’s Lending Agency Board. He recently retired as a Director of the PEI Federation of Agriculture and a Director of the PEI Potato Board in addition to past roles on the PEI Cattlemen’s Board and the PEI Farm Centre Board. Don has always been a strong promoter of Simmental cattle and agriculture on Prince Edward Island. He has instilled the importance of participation in industry and community activities in his three sons. Andrew, Robert and Michael are fortunate enough to have a father that made sure they were able to participate in National Simmental Shows right across Canada throughout the late 1990’s and most of the 2000’s. Don has a tireless work ethic that has built and sustained an impressive farm operation throughout his lifetime.

Joseph Steeves Joseph Steeves of Stoney Creek, New Brunswick grew up on a farm raising dairy cattle. After working at a dairy in his early years, Joe later worked for the Federal Government in the animal health division. It was with this job he saw his first Simmental; at the time he was raising purebred Shorthorn feeder calves. Joe married his wife Doreen Leaman in March of 1956. Together they had four children, twins Marlene and Marcie, Heather and Bill.Jo-Dreen Farms is now managed by Joe, Doreen, his daughter Marcie, son-in-law Don and grandchildren Heidi and Trevor. Joe’s other daughter Marlene married Peter Gaunce who with their five boys operate Hidden Hollow Simmentals. Joe had raised purebred Shorthorns for a number of years however the Simmental breed caught his eye. He purchased his first Simmental in 1981, joining the Canadian Simmental Association the following year. On December 13th, 2002 a barn fire took out his entire herd. Friends and the community rallied together to rebuild a new barn, and with the purchase of a few heifers Joe was back in the Simmental business. Jo-Dreen Farms has a good performing herd with their bulls on most occasions being the top gaining or top selling at the Maritime Beef Test Station. They’ve exhibited cattle successfully in the Maritimes, Quebec and Ontario. Joe has also judged the Royal Winter Fair three times along with many other shows. Joe has played an active role in the agriculture industry on the number of committees and boards he’s sat on. He was once the President of the Canadian Shorthorn Association, and sat on the board of directors for the Maritime Simmental Association. He also was on the board of directors for the Maritime Beef Testing Society and was President when they introduced the Grow Safe program that’s still used there today.

Jim & Agnes Asher As Simmental celebrated the 50th anniversary of the breed in Canada we need to remember the early importers and breeders that started it all, and made it strong. One of those breeders was Jim and Agnes Asher of Bar A Simmentals. Jim was the herdsman at Lacombe Research Station where 12 head were imported into Canada in the spring of 1967. The four bulls were Pacific, Petunia, Quadrille and Quartier, along with 8 heifers. The breeding program resulted in Adonis, Achilles and Ajax. Jim retired in 1970 and moved back to Saskatchewan to start a small herd of Simmentals in Grandora. He was able to import 2 head in the first years with the resulting heifer quite literally paying for the farm; back in 1974, $45,000 was a lot of money. Over the years they built a successful Simmental herd and were always a strong supporter of the “best breed in Canada”. Starting with Fullblood cattle over the years the herd has switched to red and black purebreds, with Jim never being a big supporter of anything but Fullbloods. When showing Agnes recent pictures of the herd, she’d always say “those don’t look like the Simmentals I know”.Jim passed away in 2000 at 91 years, still asking about the cows and Agnes passed away in 2017 at 102 years.Bar A Simmentals andthe Asher name continues to be associated with the Simmental breed with daughter Donna Marie Asher, her husband Mike Millar and son Wyatt raising Simmentals with their motto “Quality over Quantity”. This year Wyatt is the President of the Young Canadian Simmental Association and continues to build his herd and the Bar A Simmental name.

Melvern Simmentals In 1950, at 8 years old Bill Armstrong moved to the Spa Springs of Nova Scotia and farmed with his parents and three siblings. The family milked cows for cream. Bill took over the farm in 1971. He decided not to continue milking cows, but entered the beef industry with 30 Hereford Shorthorn cross cows. They started breeding Simmentals to bring more growth into the herd. The Armstrong’s registered their first 30 half blood Simmentals in 1975. Bill, Richard and their families now run 225 cows. They feed all of their calves out to slaughter, from start to finish. They have competed very successfully at some of the first Simmental shows throughout the Maritimes and continued to show for decades up until recently. They are currently taking a short break before Richard and Megan’s children, Hayden and Rylee become more involved in that aspect of the industry. Bill and Richard have held positions on many different boards and committees – the Maritime Simmental Association, Annapolis Valley Exhibition Beef & Steer show committee, Annapolis Soils & Crops Committee, Annapolis County Federation of Agriculture and the Nova Scotia Cattlemen’s Association to name a few. The Armstrong family are very loyal supporters of the Simmental breed. It is with great pleasure to honour Melvern Simmentals into the Canadian Simmental Association Hall of Fame in recognition of their dedication and commitment to the Simmental breed.

50

From the Director’s Chair Positioned to be the Leader

Frank Robblee – Canadian Simmental Association Director

G

reetings from the beautiful province of Prince Edward Island. For those reading who do not know me, my name is Frank Robblee and farm under the Tryon Simmental prefix. This past summer in Fredericton, New Brunswick I was newly elected to the Canadian Simmental Association’s board of directors at the Annual General Meeting that was held in conjunction to Convention. I grew up on a mixed farm, growing potatoes and managing a small beef feedlot. When I was 8 years old, my father asked me if I would be interested in getting into fullblood Simmental cattle, and I immediately said yes. He purchased our first Simmental that year from Arthur Corbett, of Rolling Hills Simmentals and I was hooked. Two years later in 1987 we sold our potato operation, and Arthur had his dispersal in our barn. We purchased 5 foundation females from that sale that would make up the basis for our herd to this present day. A lot has changed over the past 30 years, but one thing that has remained consistent is the continued improvement of the Simmental breed. As a practicing veterinarian, I have been involved and have seen the groundwork that has been laid out for both the quality milk and verified beef production systems. The constant

52

with both of these programs is the commitment to animal welfare and the implementation of quality control points that ensures consistency. Although these programs may seem like added work, I feel that the benefits to the industry are well worth it.This forays into how important our youth and the YCSA program are to our industry, and to the education of the general public in how sustainable beef production is important not just for our economy but for our land as well. The Simmental breed is at the forefront of producing beef in the most economical way possible. I believe that the education that is taught to the YCSA members is invaluable in providing a basis for them for the future, but also to prepare them to be ambassadors to the general public. We’ve reached a time where consumers are two to three generations removed from the farm, and may not fully comprehend what is involved in beef production and the sustainability of our land. As a breed, I think we are well positioned to be the leader and one I am proud to work with and be a part of. As a director of the CSA Board, we are always there for concerns or issues that you would like to be addressed. Feel free to contact any one of us.

A

s a veterinarian for the past thirty-five years, I often get called out to help with difficult calvings or malpresentations while commonly seeing meconium (first manure) stained calves. This article will discuss the cause and what one should do in these cases. The jury is out on this one as veterinarians have many different opinions on this case, plus it is a difficult subject to study. Hopefully this article will allow you as producers to form your own opinions. Whenever we see a meconium stained calf we must assume that the calf has been under stress, and that the parturition had been delayed for some reason that may or may not be under our control. That is why meconium stained calves are very common in malpresentations, torsions and with large calves. Normal calving should have taken place sooner. With stress, the meconium gets expelled and mixes with the uterine fluids which stains the calf. Most farmers see the meconium and although they mostly recognize that the birthing has been delayed, I am not sure if they associate it with the stress on the calf. If one sees this too often then it may be a sign that you are delaying your calving assistance, or that there are not recognizable signs of labor early enough. Nutritional issues such as low-grade calcium deficiencies can lead to lack of uterine contraction and delay parturition. Every time we move cattle into the barn and delay the return to full-fledged pushing there is the possibility of a delay in parturition and a meconium stained calf. A meconium stained live calf is a warning sign we may need to give that calf special attention. This special attention comes in the form of close observation. The calf could be slower so providing supplemental colostrum sooner rather than later may be in order. Calves born from delayed births could have varying forms of anoxia, and potentially be slow to stand and nurse making them more susceptible to calf hood diseases including pneumonia, scours and navel infection. Remember it can be the first case that starts the outbreak, so one should provide more TLC to insure the survivability of these meconium stained calves. It’s a good idea to mark down in your calving records “calf meconium stained”. A good majority of these will do very well with no additional care, but the warning signs of meconium staining is trying to tell us something so still observe them closely. Seeing yellow fetal fluids even within the waterbag tells us that there is meconium staining, so time is of the essence and I would have no hesitation to proceed to help with the birth of the calf. Again, it tells us time is running out. There is no doubt with backwards calves or breech births the straining and pressure on the back end of the calf facilitates the meconium being expelled earlier than normal.

56

By examining the dam quicker, if you see yellow fetal fluids it may identify these malpresentations earlier and avert a stillborn calf. Even though if one works efficiently and diligently on assisting the meconium colored fetal fluid makes myself as a veterinarian work a little bit quicker than normal. We as veterinarians probably experience more of these meconium stained calves as time has elapsed between when the farmer identifies a problem, checks it out himself, then calls us and we arrive or the calving arrives at the clinic. I don’t know if the greater degree of meconium indicates the degree of stress as I have seen some heavily stained calves that were very lively, and others that were barely stained which were very weak and lethargic. The meconium staining may warn us ahead of time to be ready with the resuscitation procedures such as the straw up the nose and/or cold water in the ear. A respiratory stimulant such as respisure available (respisure and other respiratory stimulants only available by prescription from your veterinarian) or if you have supplemental oxygen that can also be available to help revive slow calves. The final decision comes down to the susceptibility to either a meconium aspirated pneumonia or perhaps a higher propensity to contract navel infection. The jury is out on this one, and while we don’t generally have problems with meconium induced aspiration pneumonia I have seen it diagnosed several times over the years. Therefore I am always cautious and if the situation warrants it, prescribe a course of antibiotics. This will depend on the advice of your veterinarian as to whether they are prescribed, but next time a meconium stained calf is delivered at calving season it is well worth asking the question in my opinion. I have followed up with many of the cases over the years, and in every case where antibiotics were prescribed the calf had no further treatment. In today’s world of prudent usage of antibiotics one must weigh the likelihood of getting sick, and the fact that further antibiotics may be required. The meconium is essentially considered pretty sterile, but I think the aspiration causes lung damage and predisposes calves getting sick. This spring think of the meconium as an early warning sign of many things including a good predictor that the cow has been in labor too long. Additional care then may be needed for both the cow and calf. Your veterinarian may even prescribe NSAIDs in certain situations to help the calf and cow along. I truly believe all these additional efforts will lead to a healthier calf, subsequently a healthier herd and give you some peace of mind. Very little has ever been looked at in regards to this topic at calving time.

My name is Matt Bates and I was raised on a purebred cow-calf operation near Lindsay, Ontario, which forged my passion for beef cattle and the agricultural industry. I am currently in my second year, studying Veterinary Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College (University of Guelph), after completing 4 years of an undergraduate Animal Science degree. I have a particular interest in large animal medicine and reproduction and I hope to pursue these areas as a future career. The opportunities afforded to me through 4-H and junior beef breed organizations have been numerous, and the life lessons that I’ve learned through such have been foundational. Whether it was a junior national show, a leadership conference, an international trip, or a public speaking competition, the friendships and mentorships established along the way reflect the true value of such programs. My words are not enough to express the level of appreciation I have for the people that have contributed to the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation, but I hope they can speak to the magnitude of benefits that are created through its’ youth scholarships and programming, and the value of these opportunities to the future of the industry. The FCSF Scholarship will have an immense impact on my academic journey, and I am extremely grateful to those who have made it possible.

2017 Dr. Allan Dixon Memorial Scholarship Recipients Michaela grew up in a rural area, where she always had an interest in cattle and agriculture. Michaela’s involvement in 4-H was her first exposure to Simmental cattle as her club was heavily influenced by the breed. Her experiences to date have facilitated countless opportunities to network with likeminded people who share her passion for agriculture and those who take pride in their community and heritage. Michaela looks forward to being able to give back to the industry and share her passion.

Michaela Lievre Woodstock, ON Breana grew up on a farm near Rocky Mountain House, Alberta where her family raised bison and beef cattle, as well as quarter horses. Her upbringing instilled many important life lessons including the value of a hard day’s work, a great appreciation for life and developed her passion for the care of animals. After high school she began taking a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology in order to pursue a career as a veterinarian. Her studies have taken her to the University of Calgary but she continues to hold on to her roots and connections to the agriculture industry through volunteer work and helping out on the family farm.

Trevor Vance Memorial Scholarship Recipient

Mackenzie Skeels Rimbey, AB

Growing up with my family at Anchor D Ranch Simmentals just outside of Rimbey has expanded my passion for the rural way of life. My first cow was given to me; from there I have bought, traded, and raised cows, extending my purebred herd to 20 head. I have spent nine years in 4-H, where I have held the positions President, Secretary, and Historian. One of my favorite volunteering events is to cook at the Ronald McDonald House. I have achieved the Alberta 4-H Award of Excellence Platinum Medallion and have the honor of being selected to attend the 2018 4-H Canada Citizenship Congress in Ottawa, ON. I have loved my last three years being a part of the Alberta YCSA board, last year being the Vice President. It has been wonderful to be a part of the National YCSA Cattle Show for the last 5 years, and winning 3 aggregate titles is very humbling. With my 2nd aggregate title, the Canadian Simmental Association sent me to represent the YCSA in Iowa at a 900 head American Junior Simmental cattle show, I look forward to one day being a board member for the National YCSA Board so that I can give back to the association that has given so much to me. Currently I am enrolled in Red Deer Collage in the Media Studies and Professional Communication Coarse. Within this course, I am acquiring the skills to become a successful marketer and spokesperson for agriculture. Being crowned Miss Rimbey Rodeo 2017 has given me the platform to educate individuals not just about rodeo, but the agriculture industry as a whole. I enjoy that I have the ability to educate people about the beef industry and inform people as to where their food comes from. My roots run deep in agriculture, being the fourth generation on our family farm. Agriculture is something I am extremely passionate about, and I feel it is very important that there is a spokesperson representing our way of life. My vision is that the consumer receives the highest quality product that we as dedicated agriculture producers have produced. My goal is that the consumer knows that their food was created with care, love and respect for the livestock and the land where it was produced.

Thank You Lewis Farms! We are pleased to announce the 2018 Friends of the Canadian Simmental Foundation - Lewis Farms, of Spruce Grove, Alberta. Lewis Farms produces 800 acres of seed potatoes, 3000 acres of grain and runs 800 purebred Simmental and Angus cows. Simmental genetics were first introduced to Lewis Farms in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. The first registered Simmental cows were purchased in the mid 1970’s. Lewis Farms have been active with their children in 4-H and the YCSA program, while promoting the positive involvement of youth in the cattle industry. Built on a foundation of a family working together over the past 70 years, Lewis Farms has become a strong and growing force within the Simmental Breed. Ken Lewis is currently the President of the Friends of the Canadian Simmental Foundation. Lewis Farms has been a strong supporter of the Foundation Auction since its inception. Thank you for your donation of the Lot 1 – Bred Heifer to the 2018 Friends of the Canadian Simmental Foundation Auction.

On the Road

Ryan Cook Simmental Country Sales Representative

I

ncredible! The fall female sales were well attended and supported across the country. With averages up, the demand for the front end was tremendous and breeders added many future donors to their programs. It is a great testimony to the breed to have the depth of quality that we have in all segments taking us to the forefront of the cattle industry. In my travels I’m often asked why don’t you change this, or do this. The answer is simple we are open to ideas and there are many ways to bring them forward. You can contact staff, talk or email a board member or even run for a term on board of directors and express your thoughts on behalf of the CSA members. But please take a moment to think that the staff and board make decisions based on analyzing all the facts and stats available that will benefit the members.

72

Many of you are probably well into calving. I hope that you had great success and that it has been rewarding for you to see the planning and efforts of last year’s breeding season come full cycle. The bull sales are ready to begin soon and as you have seen in the January and February issues there are many great opportunities to search and find that new bull. Whether you need a herdsire to take your program up a level, a calving ease bull for the heifer pen or are looking for multiple bulls to breed commercial females to this spring. The quality and strength are easy to access through the country. All the best in your search and travels this spring.
