swissnex’s goal is to promote Switzerland’s excellence as one of the world’s leading countries in the fields of innovation, research, technology and higher education, to connect academia and business and to facilitate cooperation between the two countries. Briefly said: promote - connect - facilitate.
Mission 1
2013 will stay as a unique year in the history of the relationship between Switzerland and China. The signature of the Free Trade Agreement between the two countries was certainly the highlight of the political and economic agenda, but the year also saw the visit of 5 Federal Councillors and 3 State Secretaries. Our key topics of Education, Research and Innovation were very high on the agenda of these visits.
Our activities also included many new programs that connected scientists, entrepreneurs and innovators around topics ranging from food safety to translational medicine or 3D printing. We saw the swissnex community grow fast with many alumni of Swiss universities joining our events and offering their help. And we know that the interest in China for the Swiss excellence in science and technology will not subside in coming years!

Together with the Swiss Consulate General we organized the first Shanghai “Escalade” celebration, an evening filled with medieval flair, traditional costumes and delightful dining with our Swiss and Chinese friends. Thanks to the perfect organization by Christina Myers (swissnex China) and Marc-André Siegrist (Swiss General Consulate Shanghai), every detail of the tradition had been taken care of, from homemade soup to the famous “Marmite” chocolate pot. No Escalade would be complete without the traditional race, thus a good 50 people competed in a run through the streets of Shanghai.

On Halloween’s eve, we organized the annual “Swiss Universities All Alumni Gathering” and an enthusiastic group of 150 people responded to our invitation. In a lively discussion, the alumni and experts exchanged their thoughts on how free trade initiatives are changing the innovation landscape in China. In collaboration with Swiss Re, we set up a conference on the topic of infectious diseases and vaccination in Beijing, bringing together experts to share knowledge and discuss responses. Leading experts in the field of epidemiology joined the day long event that was kicked off by a speech of Swiss Federal Councillor Alain Berset.
As part of an agreement between the swissnex network and ZHAW, we welcomed 7 professors for short-term research in and around Shanghai. From conferences at local universities on work psychology to field research on mobile payments, the professors had a chance to experience China in their field of expertise.

Part of our mission is also to share what we discover about China. Newsletter, videos, tweets and updates all helped us to explain more about recent devellopment in education and innovation. We also continued to work with Swiss universities interested in taking advantage of the powerful social media platforms in China.

3D Printing and B io m a te r i a l s In collaboration with our San Francisco colleagues, we organized a day long workshop on 3D printing and biomaterials. Like on the West Coast and later in India, we gathered exper ts to discuss the future of the fifie eld and showcased innovative ideas.
Food Safety Over 40 executives and academics joined our invitation to envision solutions for the food industry. Collaborating with Ecole Hoteliere in Lausanne, we developed scenarios to help food manufacturers and other industry players be more innovative in the future.
Technology Cooperation

Robotics The Artificial Lab of the University of Zurich UZH with its Director Prof. Dr. Rolf Pfeifer showcased Roboy, the truly revolutionary humanoid robot, alongside two of the latest robots from Jiaotong University, demonstrating the true spirit of Swiss innovation in science and technology. The show was a great hit in the museum and attracted hundreds of kids on the spot. Bioinformatics On the occasion of the first visit of the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) to China, we hosted a symposium in Shanghai. The delegation of the SIB had the opportunity to meet and interact with their academic peers from Chinese universities and other organizations, such as Taicang Life Sciences Institutes, Beijing University, Shanghai Bioinformation Technolog and Beijing Insitute of Genomics.

This year’s edition of swissnex China Lectures offered a broad selection of topics. Our first lecture, given by Edward Steinfeld, Director of the China Initiative at Watson Institute for International Studies, Brown University, gave insights about the developments and future scenarios of innovative manufacturing. In another lecture our community learned about art and design, education and collaboration with luxury brands, presented by the Director of ECAL Ecole Cantonale d’art de Lausanne, Alexis Georgacopoulos.
New Industrial Revolution We closed this year’s series with a lecture on “The New Industrial Revolution - Effects on China, and the World”. Peter Marsh, former Editor of the Financial Times and Claudio Boër, our Senior Advisor shared their experience and discussed if there might be an end of mass production someday. We will keep track!

Mandated by the Gebert Ruf Foundation, we worked with Lennart Bolliger, a Swiss researcher, to complete a report on philanthropy in China. Besides providing an excellent overview of the situation in China, this project brought us in close contact with leaders of NGOs, social businesses and local foundations.

The concept of Social innovation is nascent but fast-growing in China with massive emergence of NGOs and social enterprises, leading to active interaction with and adaptation from the West. We joined the first creative lab for social innovation at Gongyi Xintiandi that attracted more than 80 representatives of NGOs, local government, and social entrepreneurs. It Included a day-long group workshop to co-design concrete working areas, to address diverse questions and to discuss how social enterprises and NGOs can engage to implement innovative projects.

As another collaborative effort with the colleagues of San Francisco and India, this performance took place in Beijing and Shanghai. The combination of a scientific talk and a theater showcase proved to be very successful. Two Shanghai-based actors, Ms. Yujiao Gong and Mr. Shichang Jin, both from Shanghai Theatre Academy, presented

the classic balcony scene from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, while the Swiss research leaders Anton Rey (Institute for the Performing Arts and Film, Zurich University of the Arts) and Thomas Grunwald (Swiss Epilepsy Center) discussed the authenticity of the two actors’ emotions based on their professional background.
The Young Swiss Design Kaleidoscope at the K11 art space exhibited some of the best Swiss contemporary designer’s approaches on Swiss tradition. From conceptual to commercialized work and from common to luxury products. In addition to the exhibit, we were pleased to present two interesting public lectures, focusing on the design education in Switzerland and its successful stories. Both speakers, Mr. Michael Krohn (Head of MA of Design, Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK ) and Mr. Alexis Georgacopoulos (Director of ECAL), are leading fifig gures in the fifie eld of ar t and design.

As the country continues its evolution towards an innovationoriented economy, we are keen to explore new fields and develop new programs for our stakeholders. We are convinced that there is a large role to play for Swiss Education in China and we plan to redouble our communication efforts, in particular around Universities of Applied Sciences. Taking a broader approach, we also expect to work closer with our colleagues from the swissnex and STC network, in particular those

located in Asia. Multinational companies are now excellent at crafting and implementing regional strategies, so universities and other organizations in science and technology should follow.
