CENTRUM ARENA

When Southern Utah University’s 5,300-seat Centrum was completed in 1985, it was hoped the state-of-the art facility would push the Thunderbirds to the highest levels of collegiate sports. In 1988 and again in 1996 the Utah Jazz called the Centrum home for fall training camp and each year the Centrum is the centerpiece venue for the Utah Summer Games. The facility which covers six acres and cost just over $8 million to build is part of the Sharwan Smith Center, which houses the SUU Bookstore, Grand Ballroom, food services, and all of the student services offices. The concourse of the Centrum houses SUTV studios, the basketball offices, academic offices and numerous classrooms and art studios.

2011-12 SOUTHERN UTAH WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

2011-12 SEASON PREVIEW The Southern Utah University women’s basketball team will look to build on one of its most successful runs in recent history, after competing in the Summit League tournament last year. The upcoming season promises to be full of intrigue as the Thunderbirds match a group of talented young returners with a strong recruiting class, for a combination that will produce the fourth youngest team in the nation. “This is a young team with limited experience, and the growth of all of our players is going to be interesting to see,” asserted Thunderbird head coach JR Payne. “Many of them are prepared to emerge as basketball players.” Basketball fans will notice two changes this year, both in the game and on the court as the NCAA has moved the 3-point line back to coincide with the men’s mark, and has also added a restricted area arc in the key where charges will not be called, similar to the rule used in the NBA. “At first I didn’t think the new 3-point line would be that different, but there is definitely less consistency from that distance which should separate the makers from the takers. We are also seeing a lot of toes on the line as players make the adjustment,” explained Payne. “The new arc is so small that its impact appears like it will be minimal.” The T-Birds will look for leadership from the most veteran member of their squad, Tayler Anderson. The junior forward from Lyman, Wyoming brings valuable experience to a young group after having already played in 60 games in a Thunderbird uniform. Anderson is one of two returning starters Sophomore Guard Desiree Jackson for SUU and was one of the team’s top rebounders and assist leaders last year. “Tayler has more minutes and starts than anyone,” said Payne. “Before she has been a great team player and was content contributing on defense and rebounding. Now we are asking her to expand her role offensively while continuing to be a hard-worker and leader.” Joining Andersen in the post will be sophomores Carli Moreland and Meghan Ringer, redshirt-freshman Torey Hill, transfer Kimie Hawkins and incoming freshman Brenna Gates. Moreland was able to gain a significant amount of experience in her freshman campaign, appearing in all 30 games for the Thunderbirds a year ago. “Carli has been awesome this offseason,” stated Payne. “She has worked so hard to attack her weaknesses and has really improved them. She is also very strong in the weight room and has become a vocal leader for us.”

2011-12 SEASON PREVIEW Competing with Moreland for minutes this fall will be junior college transfer Kimie Hawkins. The junior forward joins the Thunderbirds after a very successful stint at Mt. SAC. “It is always difficult to make the transition to the Division-I level. Transfers come in a little older so you expect them to do better, but there is always more to learn,” explained Payne. “Kimie is great in the basketball area, taking people off the dribble, rebounding outside her area. Right now her biggest challenge is that she is new to our system.” Torey Hill and Meghan Ringher are both working to come back from injuries and should be ready for the season to give coach Payne added options in the front-court. “Torey was here for the second half of the season last year so she didn’t have the chance to get into everything, but she works hard and always does extra. She is a country-strong farm girl and I expect her to be back soon”, said Payne. “Meghan worked hard this summer to get stronger and studied to improve her basketball IQ. Unfortunately she has been limited by injuries this fall.” Undoubtedly the “biggest” piece of the incoming recruiting class, Brenna Gates joins the Thunderbirds after an outstanding high school career. The 6-4 center from California posted 20.5 rebounds per game to lead the state in rebounding while also averaging 18.3 points a Sophomore Forward Carli Moreland contest. “Brenna has a rare combination of size and agility,” described Payne. “She is very long and has great feet and hands. She is really competing for a spot and could be very good.” There is a lot of excitement about the T-Bird backcourt this season, most of it surrounding all-Summit League Newcomer Team selection and top-returning scorer Desiree Jackson. The sophomore guard from Moreno Valley, Calif. started all year for Southern Utah in 2010-11 and had one of the most impressive freshman campaigns in school history. “Des’ potential is off the charts,” stated Payne. “She is as talented as anyone I’ve ever coached. Her work ethic this year is a night-and-day improvement. She has become a better three-point shooter, gained good weight and is stronger. Des will be a special player in this league and in the Big Sky.” Along with Jackson, the Thunderbirds will feature a talented group of shooting guards. Angel Dorn returns for her sophomore season and will be joined by freshmen Marquelle Funk from Highland, Utah and Taylor Maynes of Salome, Ariz.

2011-12 SEASON PREVIEW “Angel is very strong and contributes a lot to our defense. She is developing her shot and has the tools to be a good player,” said Payne. “Marquelle has tremendous length on the perimeter which is important in our system. She has shown great natural abilities, she runs the floor, rebounds and is learning quickly. Taylor is a good shooter with a tireless work ethic.” The Southern Utah roster includes three players who could all see time at the point this year. Andrea Jones appears to be the front-runner after establishing herself as a key player off the bench for the Thunderbirds last season and finishing among the team leaders in steals and assists. Sophomore DJ Norman also garnered valuable experience in her freshman campaign appearing in twenty-nine games. “Andrea is a very talented scorer and distributor. She is also a great defender and can be a total gnat on that side of the ball,” explained Payne. “She has a great knowledge of the game and her savvy will really help us on the floor. DJ had a great summer and really worked on her game. She is a versatile player who can play all three guard positions.” The T-birds will also welcome newcomer Hailey Mandelko to the backcourt. The Lexington, Neb. native had an outstanding high school career and the SUU coaches were excited to receive her commitment. “Hailey could be a special player here at SUU,” stated Payne. “She has a high basketball IQ, is athletic, shoots the ball well, moves fast and has great court vision. She makes her team better and can also score when she wants to. Hailey has a great work ethic and wants to be good, and she definitely has the ability to get there.” The Thunderbirds enter their final season of competition in the Summit League as the university is set to become a member of the Big Sky Conference next summer. Southern Utah will have their work cut out for them as they face a challenging preseason schedule that includes teams from the West Coast, Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences in addition to their regular slate of games in the competitive Summit League. “This is definitely the toughest schedule that we have played here with a lot of difficult road games. It should help prepare us for the physical play in the Summit League and anyone else we might play in the future,” surmised Payne. “I’m excited to see how well we compete Junior Forward Tayler Anderson in our third year in the Summit League and want to make a push to be in the upper echelon.”

COACHING STAFF Toriano Towns enters his third season as associate head coach for the Thunderbirds. Towns serves as SUU’s recruiting and defensive coordinator, assists with the planning of practice sessions, conditioning, scouting, and also works with the Thunderbird post players. In his first two seasons with the Thunderbirds, Towns helped forward Challis Pascucci develop into one of the premiere low post players in the Summit League. After the 2009-10 season Pascucci earned All-Summit League second team honors after leading the conference in rebounding and tied for the lead in blocked shots. She also set the SUU singleseason record for total rebounds with 291 and her 46 blocks were the fifth most in SUU single-season history. This past year Pascucci earned a spot on the All-Summit League first team after finishing third in the conference in scoring (17.7 PPG), second in rebounding (9.7 RPG) and sixth in blocks (23). Pascucci finished the 2011 season as the Thunderbirds all-time leader in career rebounds (929) and fourth in scoring (1,328). Towns joined Southern Utah after spending four years at Boise State University as the Broncos defensive coordinator. During his time at BSU, the Broncos won back-to-back Western Athletic Conference championships, earned a trip to the NCAA tournament, advanced to the second round of the WNIT tournament, had a pair of First Team All-WAC guards and set numerous offensive and defensive school records. Prior to Boise State, Towns spent one season as an assistant coach at the University of Arizona, helping the Wildcats record a 20-win season and a post a first round NCAA Tournament victory against the University of Oklahoma. Towns played a major role in recruiting and scouting at Arizona. He worked with the Wildcat post players, assisting with the development of Shawntinice Polk who became one of the country’s most decorated post players being named to the Kodak/WBCA All-American team, first-team All-Pac-10 team, and Kodak/WBCA all-Region 8 team. Towns’ coaching career began at Gonzaga University where he served as an assistant for three seasons. At Gonzaga, Towns was responsible for post player development, where he coached five All-West Coast Conference performers along with holding responsibility for scouting and game preparation. He also served as the co-recruiting coordinator for the Bulldogs. During his time at Gonzaga, he helped orchestrate the second-best turnaround in WCC history as the Bulldogs went from eighth in 2002-03 to second place in 200304, posting an 18-12 overall record. That team advanced to its second-ever Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). Towns earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Saint Mary’s College in 1998 and his Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University this past spring. “Toriano has been a great addition to Southern Utah women’s basketball,” head coach JR Payne said. “He’s a proven recruiter on a national scale and will continue to elevate our recruiting to a new level. Toriano is a fierce competitor on the court and is extremely passionate about the growth and development of our student-athletes, not only as players but also as people. He is great resource that will continue to contribute in the building SUU women’s basketball.”

THE SUMMIT LEAGUE Celebrating its 30th season in Division I athletics

“Ascending” and “improving” are adjectives frequently used in media coverage of The Summit League as it continues a renaissance on the playing eld and in the classroom. As The Summit League celebrates its 30th anniversary season as an NCAA Division I athletics conference, the level of performance and achievement among the 11 member institutions and over 3,000 student-athletes in 19 championship sports continues to grow. Since 2007, The Summit League has produced 39 All-Americans and 28 Academic All-America selections along with three NCAA Champions, two NBA Draft choices and one Olympic Silver medalist. Headlining The Summit League’s most recent history were the additions of the University of South Dakota and the University of Nebraska Omaha to its membership. USD joined in 2009 and the 2011-12 academic year marks its rst year of full league competition. UNO’s membership took effect on July 1, 2011 and it will begin league competition in 2012-13. The Summit League’s visibility continues to expand on several fronts. The 2011 Baseball Championship drew a record 5,128 fans, topping the previous high by almost 1,500. Another successful Summit League Basketball Championship totaled a combined attendance of over 32,000 which ranked as the second-highest gure in league history while the men’s tournament was one of just six outside the traditional “power conferences” to average 4,400 or better per session. Television exposure also increased with the broadcasts of four Summit League sport championships in 2010-11. For the second consecutive season, all 14 men’s and women’s basketball tournament games were televised live, including the women’s championship on ESPNU and the men’s on ESPN2. Furthermore, The Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships were televised for the rst time and the league’s entire Baseball Tournament was carried live, marking another rst. The national reach of The Summit League was furthered when three member institutions hosted 2010-11 NCAA Championship events. IUPUI was a quad-host for the Women’s Basketball Final Four, UMKC co-hosted the Volleyball Championship and Oakland hosted the Great Lakes Cross Country Regional Championship. In 2013, Oakland will host the Men’s Basketball Second and Third Rounds and IUPUI will serve as co-host for a Men’s Basketball Regional. In men’s basketball, The Summit League ranked No. 18 in the Sagarin Ratings, placing four teams among the top 150 and six in the top 200. In the Mid-Major Top 25 poll, league champion Oakland ranked No. 5 with two rst-place votes entering the NCAA Tournament, putting them ahead of two Final Four participants, including the national runner-up. The Summit League set a leaguerecord by playing 16 games against AP nationally-ranked teams, the highest total among mid-majors, including seven top-10 opponents, highlighted by Oakland’s win at then-No. 7 Tennessee. Women’s basketball joined the men in sending multiple teams to the postseason with three teams advancing for the second-straight year, including Oral Roberts, which reached the WNIT’s round of 16 to match the league’s deepest run in that tournament. Summit League teams combined to record four victories over “power six” conference foes during the season.

37

Individually on the hardwood, Oakland’s Keith Benson was selected in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks and Oral Roberts’ Steven Roundtree was named Mid-Major Freshman of the Year by CollegeInsider.com. On the women’s side, ORU’s Kevi Luper became the rst player in NCAA history to lead the nation in both points per game and steals per game in the same season. Several teams continued impressive championship streaks within the league in 2010-11. Oral Roberts, which nished the season nationally-ranked, won its 14th-straight baseball title, tying for the second-longest streak in NCAA history. Oakland captured its 12thconsecutive men’s and women’s swimming and diving titles while North Dakota State won its fourth-straight men’s and women’s indoor track and eld championships and its third softball crown in a row. South Dakota State became the rst women’s basketball team to win three consecutive league championships. The Summit League enjoyed a successful track and eld season with eight All-Americans, including six at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Oral Roberts’ Jack Whitt nished as runner-up in the pole vault at the Outdoor Championships after placing third indoors. North Dakota State’s Whitney Carlson became the rst female athlete in league history to earn All-America honors in two events at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships during the same year. Two Summit League student-athletes received the prestigious NCAA Elite 88 Award, given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the nals site for each of the NCAA championships. Amy Anderson (women’s golf) and Carlson (outdoor track and eld), both from North Dakota State, the lone non-FBS public university to have multiple recipients, were presented with the honor and added All-America honors for their athletic performances. Anderson led the league’s individual accomplishments, placing 12th at the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships, the highest nish ever by a Summit League player, and competing as an amateur in the U.S. Women’s Open. IPFW’s Amy Recht claimed her fourth consecutive Women’s Tennis Player of the Year honor and became the rst Summit League athlete to win the sport’s top award in each season of eligibility. Academically, six Summit League student-athletes received Academic All-America honors and six teams were bestowed with the NCAA Public Recognition Award, an honor given to teams that have a Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The accomplishments of 2010-11 came on the heels of the exceptional success the previous two years. In 2009-10, IUPUI’s Chen Ni became The Summit League’s rst female NCAA Champion when she took rst in the platform dive. SUMMIT LEAGUE MEMBERSHIP

One of the Summit League’s most iconic moments came when Valparaiso’s Bryce Drew hit “the shot”, a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, to top Mississippi in the rst round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament. Valpo’s story captivated the nation as they became the league’s second team to reach the “Sweet 16.” Bahamas’ 4x400-meter relay team after winning both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor 400meter titles and IUPUI’s George Hill became The Summit League’s second NBA rst round draft pick. Originally formed in 1982 as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities and later known as the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League is in its fth year of rebranding that followed its 25th anniversary and coincided with the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athletic performances of all league student-athletes. Included in the plan was the league’s new name, the creation of a new image and the addition of three member institutions. The Summit League has a combined enrollment of over 135,000 at 11 universities, ve of which are located in the top 76 U.S. media markets (Detroit, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Tulsa and Omaha). Member institutions include: IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue UniversityFort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis), UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City), the University of Nebraska Omaha (which begins league competition in 2012-13), North Dakota State University, Oakland University, Oral Roberts University, the University of South Dakota (in its rst year as a full member), South Dakota State University, Southern Utah University and Western Illinois University. Eastern Illinois University is an associate member in swimming and diving and men’s soccer. These member institutions pride themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes. The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and eld, men’s and women’s outdoor track and eld, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The league champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in all applicable sports. Since its inception in 1982, The Summit League has had several transcendent moments on the national stage. In 1986, Cleveland State upset third-seeded Indiana in the rst round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament on its way to a berth in the Sweet 16. A decade later, Valparaiso captured the nation’s attention when Bryce Drew hit “the shot” to defeat No. 4 seed Mississippi in an NCAA rst-round game and spark its Sweet 16 run. More recently, Oral Roberts’ baseball program nished the 2004 campaign with a nationalranking and became the rst Summit League school to reach an NCAA Super Regional in 2006. Three years later, North Dakota State’s 2009 softball team became the rst League member to win an NCAA regional and advance to the Super Regional round. During the 2008-09 basketball season, South Dakota State’s women’s team was nationally-ranked throughout the year and capped its season with an NCAA Tournament rst round victory. The League has produced ve NCAA champions, four Olympic athletes and several AllAmericans in the sports of track and eld, swimming and diving and cross country. Numerous professional athletes and several draft choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Major League Baseball rst round picks, a pair of NBA rst rounders, and one WNBA selection. Former Summit Leaguer Kevin Duckworth (NBA) was a two-time all-star during his professional career. Recent and historical success coupled with an increased growth among its membership base gives The Summit League a promising future on the landscape of college athletics.

SOUTHERN UTAH PRESIDENT Michael T. Benson was appointed the 15th president of Southern Utah University on November 10, 2006, by the Utah State Board of Regents. Dr. Benson came to SUU from Snow College where he served as president for five years. Prior to his tenure in Ephraim, Dr. Benson was special assistant to the president and secretary to the University of Utah, a cabinet-level position on that campus. During his presidency at Snow, athletic teams excelled, winning several conference championships and finishing near the top of national rankings. He was instrumental in establishing America’s premier junior college football bowl game, the Zions Bank Top of the Mountains Bowl, played each December in Salt Lake City. Dr. Benson currently serves as Chair of the Presidents’ Council for the Summit League. President Benson is the father of four children, Emma, Samuel, Truman Taft, and Tatum Anne. He and his wife Debi, along with the kids, are regularly seen around campus and at all types of sporting events. An accomplished athlete, Dr. Benson was captain of the East High School basketball team and one of four sophomores on the team that won the 1981 Utah State championship. He turned down track scholarships as a senior at East to enroll at Brigham Young University on a leadership scholarship, eventually earning a bachelor’s degree in political science, English, and history while playing on the junior varsity basketball team. He has also competed in the worlds oldest rivalry, serving as a player/coach in leading Oxford University over Cambridge in the 1994 Varsity Basketball Match. President Benson has completed several marathons with his best time (2:41) winning his age division at the St. George Marathon. In 1984, Michael was one of only 19 teenagers to compete in the Boston Marathon, with his finishing time of 2:52 placing him in the top 15% of all registered runners. While President of Snow College, he ran the St. George Marathon again, this time raising over $50,000 for the athletic department. He currently maintains a seven handicap in his favorite sport, golf. Dr. Benson holds a doctorate in modern Middle Eastern History from Oxford University. His critically-acclaimed book, Harry S. Truman and the Founding of Israel has led to many lecturing and consulting opportunities. Michael regularly leads tour groups to the Middle East where he is eager to share his love for and knowledge of the region. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in non-profit administration at the Mendoza School of Business at the University of Notre Dame. The Bensons are delighted to be at Southern Utah University and look forward to supporting Thunderbird studentathletes for many years to come.

2011-12 SOUTHERN UTAH WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

DR. MICHAEL T. BENSON Dear Thunderbird Fans and Supporters: One of America’s great coaches once said, “The will to win is not nearly as important as the will to prepare to win.” All of us at Southern Utah University are committed to helping our student-athletes as they prepare to win on their respective fields and courts of competition. But more importantly, we are committed to helping them acquire those tools, experiences, and skills that will help them succeed in life and their life’s work. I thank you for your continued commitment to SUU and its many outstanding athletic programs which now number 17 – the second highest number of Division I sports programs offered in the entire State of Utah. For all those who enjoy a football Saturday on a beautiful fall day in the shadow of Cedar Mountain, the benefits of Division I athletics in our community are innumerable. From the dollars spent by visiting teams and fans in our local places of business to the positive media coverage generated by our studentathletes, the University is the beneficiary of these and other positive by-products of the substantial investment in our athletic program. Donors and alumni are even more proud of their association with the University when they see a return on their donated dollars in the form of success on the field and in the classroom. Excellence in athletics will continue to be an investment we are willing to make at Southern Utah University. In addition to those student-athletes who learn invaluable lessons in both the “thrill of victory and the agony of defeat,” athletics provide excellent participation opportunities for students in bands, cheer squads, dance teams, trainers, marketing interns, and many more. Our student athletes also represent a large percentage of the geographic, socioeconomic, ethnic, and religious diversity on campus which, I believe, enhances and enriches the academic and social experience of ALL our students. I heartily commend our athletic director, Ken Beazer, and his able and committed staff for their superb stewardship of the funds directed toward athletics. I also wish to thank all the academic and support staff who regularly monitor the progress of our student-athletes to ensure their commitment to “prepare to win” while at SUU and well beyond. Thank you for your support of Southern Utah University and the proud Thunderbird tradition. Yours sincerely,

President Michael Benson

KEN BEAZER

ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Ken Beazer was named Southern Utah’s Athletic Director on Dec. 21, 2005 and took the reins of the program Jan. 2, 2006. Beazer came to Southern Utah from Utah State University, where he has served as director of athletic development for the past four-plus years. While at USU, Beazer developed and initiated the largest capital campaign in the history of the school’s athletic department, including fund-raising for a planned $25 million renovation of Romney Stadium. Prior to his time at Utah State, Beazer spent nine years at Snow College, the first three as defensive coordinator on the football coaching staff and the final six – from 1995 to 2001 – as the school’s director of athletics. As a coach his teams ranked among the NJCAA’s top five defenses two of his three seasons, while as AD at Snow he implemented the college’s first Athletic Foundation Board as well as an annual giving program. Ken Beazer on SUU Athletics: Southern Utah University is truly a place where academics come first. The strong academic commitment of the staff and coaches is manifest in the overall academic accomplishments our teams achieve on an annual basis. The University’s strong academic emphasis, coupled with the dedicated efforts of the student athletes, allows the Athletics Department to continually post high marks in the classroom. The academic climate offered at SUU enables the institution to attract and retain high quality student athletes with sound character and a clear understanding of personal responsibility. Thunderbird Athletics was recently rewarded by its fellow institutions with an unprecedented, fourth consecutive Mid-Continent Conference Sportsmanship Award, setting a new standard by which all institutions are now measured. Southern Utah is fortunate to have a great relationship with the community, bringing new meaning to the term, “campus community.” Cedar City residents are hospitable, friendly and eager to serve, creating an ideal setting for personal growth. Thunderbird student athletes readily accept their responsibility of role models and spent countless hours in the local schools mentoring children. Southern Utah University’s commitment to athletics is manifest in its first class athletic facilities, providing the necessary amenities for a student athlete to achieve his/her athletic goals and compete at higher levels.

Advisement is designed to assist student-athletes with the transition into college and with continuing progress towards academic goals.” • Todd Brown, Assoc. Athletic Director for Compliance

IN THE WEIGHT ROOM

DAN BENNION STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

A former letterman on the Thunderbird football team, Dan Bennion returned to Southern Utah as the school’s strength and conditioning coach in 2003 and his efforts have been appreciated throughout the entire athletic department. A two-year letterman at safety for the Thunderbirds, Coach Bennion graduated from SUU in 2000. His first strength and conditioning position was as a graduate assistant at Northern Iowa, where he spent two years while working on his Masters of exercise science.

In addition to the Centrum Arena, Southern Utah Univeristy’s men’s and women’s basketball teams are also able to hold practice and host camps and clinics in the Multi-Purpose Center, located just next door to the Centrum Arena.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Southern Utah puts on a number of clinics throughout the summer and fall. SUU also hosts the Basketball Bash each year to introduce the men’s and women’s basketball teams to the the Thunderbird fans and Cedar City community. The past two events have been sponsored by Maggie Moos Ice Cream and the coaching staffs have given out free ice cream to fans who later got a chance to see the two SUU basketball teams compete in a series of events, including a tug-of-war with the ThunderKids.

IN THE CLASSROOM Southern Utah is justifiably proud of its academic record. This past year over 100 SUU student-athletes carried cumulative GPAs above 3.20 and during fall semester 51 SUU athletes earned Dean’s List recognition. Last year the athletics department as a whole carried a 3.07 GPA. SUU’s women’s gymnastics team has claimed seven academic national championships, including a run of six straight from 2001 trough 2006, and the team has not finished out of the top-three since 1991! In addition, the men’s track & field and women’s softball teams have each won a pair of academic national championships in recent years and the 2002 women’s cross country team was second-best in the nation. This past season SUU’s football team was honored by the NFCA for showing the best APR improvement in the Great West Conference, while the men’s basketball team received a similar award from The Summit League. The women’s basketball team had nine players earns spots on the Summit League’s all-academic team last season. SUU’s athletes have access to an academic center which houses individual and group study areas, a computer lab and a full-time academic coordinator.

BIG SKY CONFERENCE

Southern Utah University’s athletic program will have a new home, beginning in the fall of 2012, as the Thunderbirds have accepted an invitation to join the Big Sky Conference. SUU received and accepted a formal invitation to join the conference on Nov. 1, 2010. Southern Utah will reap many benefits as members of the Big Sky, including reduced travel costs, ease of scheduling and, at least in the case of football, the opportunity to play for an automatic post-season bid. Last, but certainly not least, SUU’s programs will be able to build on natural regional rivalries within the conference rather than with institutions with no geographic ties to Utah. The Thunderbirds currently compete in The Summit League in the majority of their sports, with the closest conference opponent located in Tulsa, Okla. With the exception of North Dakota, every school in the Big Sky will be closer geographically to SUU than the nearest Summit League institution.
