HAPPY CHRISTMAS FIVEWAYS! Blimey, Christmas is here again! Where did that sneak up from? It was only Summer a few weeks ago and here we are once again in a panic about turkeys, sprouts and shopping! I am afraid I am a bit last minute every Christmas and find the whole thing a bit of a strain often scratching around for presents in the shops on Christmas Eve before the shops close. I always make a resolution to be super organised for the next Christmas but never seem to pull it off. I hope you all have it nicely under control! Still all things considered it is a magical time of the 3 year and we wish you all the very best for a restful and enjoyable yuletide! The Fiveways Directory Team info@fivewaysdirectory.co.uk

QUIZ QUESTION ONE:

The Christmas favourite of ‘Piggies in Blankets’ is chipolata sausages wrapped in what?

fiveways Nativity at St. Matthias is a favourite in the Fiveways calendar…

STRICTLY COME CHRISTMAS Stars, sparkles, lights, action! There are many similarities between the popular BBC dance competition and our preparations for the ‘show time’ of Christmas. Both take a huge amount of effort and planning to transform the ordinary into a well-staged spectacle. Can we overdo the glitz in our desire to create a faultless Christmas experience? For the least fortunate in our city, Christmas is just another day to get through. For those who are homeless or insecurely housed, the cold is penetrating, the glitz and glamour in the shops reminds them of the difference between people who ‘have’ and those who ‘have 5not’. St Matthias Church has been providing practical support to two local charities assisting young homeless and insecurely housed people in our city. Throughout the year, we have been collecting specific items in response to their needs. Many of us think of Christmas as a time for giving generously to those we know and love: why not extend this to our neighbours, the vulnerable young people of our city, by personally giving them a Christmas gift?

feel human for a while.’

The theme of this year’s Children’s Church Nativity is “Strictly Come Christmas”. The children will tell the story of the Nativity in their own delightful way: the glitz of our Christmas will be stripped back to its plain and humble roots. The first Nativity had no celebrity endorsements, only one star, and definitely no frills or sequins, but it did have an abundance of joy, hope and love.

If you are able to donate any gifts they will be gratefully received: toiletries - a welcome treat; something warm to provide comfort; and a sweet treat for indulgence. It will be the thought that counts. We will be collecting every Sunday leading up to Christmas and during our Nativity performance at 4pm on Christmas Eve. We hope to see you there.

During our Nativity performance we will be collecting items for Christmas gift bags and boxes to be given directly to as many young homeless people as possible. Last year you donated enough to provide over 70 gift bags. We would like to do it again. The thank you letters received last year were handwritten and heartfelt, expressing delight and gratitude. One young girl wrote: ‘I didn’t know that anyone knew we existed; it made me

Happy Christmas to you all.

HOLLINGDEAN DUST DESTRUCTOR The dust destructor chimney at Hollingdean. This was built in 1895 and demolished soon after this photograph was taken in May 1962. Originally it was 220 feet in height but, after being struck by lightning in 1952, 30 feet were removed. The chimney remained disused from then on, as refuse tipping was transferred to Sheepcote Valley.

CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT AT BLAKERS PARK We are proud to announce that candle-lit carol singing in Blakers Park will be happening for the fifth consecutive year on Friday 18th December 6-7pm by the Clock Tower. The Cleveland and Blakers Park Café have very generously offered to provide mulled wine and sausage rolls on the night in exchange for donations to charity, and there is also a radical plan for the musicians to actually have one or two rehearsals before the event, so it’s possible the playing may be less ramshackle than in previous years, although we give no guarantee... Because of this, we hope many of you will attend and do your best to drown them out with your heartiest 9 singing attempts, be they perfectly in tune or otherwise. You can practise beforehand and print out your own song sheets from www.blakerspark.org.uk where there is also a simple design for making your own tealight jam jar lantern to bring along. So far, we have a banjo, some trumpets and a flute player confirmed. If you play an instrument and are interested in playing on the night, email keith@keithmcmurray.co.uk to find out when and where rehearsals take place. Also if there is anyone out there keen to have a go at leading some simple vocal harmonies, do

get in touch via the same email. As always, the event is free and, mercifully for this time of year, completely non-commercial.

GARDENS

fiveways

Brought to you each month by Fiveways gardening expert Lisa Attwell...

FIVEWAYS GARDENS DECEMBER 2015 Having had three very wet years in a row, I know lots of people have been overwhelmed with the extent to which plants have grown. I’ve had calls from people saying their garden is beginning to resemble a jungle and what to do about it... Gardening is not always a tempting prospect at this time of year. It’s quite likely to be cold and wet, and there are preparations for the festive season to think about. However, if you can be bothered (or seek some assistance from a local expert gardener) it’s a good idea to have a serious think about what you can live without next year. Just because a plant is in your garden, doesn’t mean it has to stay there. I know lots of people tolerate some of the plants in their gardens. I think this is a real shame, 15 given how much they love the garden and how many fantastic beautiful plants there are to enjoy – to look at every day... If you have plants that no longer bring a smile to your face, why not replace them? Having created a bit of space, it’s time to decide whether to tidy the garden or leave it as it is. Traditionally, autumn is the time for clearing away what remains of your herbaceous perennials in your borders. These days, however, more of us have become interested in the environment and in more naturalistic ways of gardening and feel

it is fine to leave these summer plants standing to enjoy their structural features. Sedums, Echinacea purpurea, Phlomis, Eryngiums, Achilleas and many grasses are worth leaving standing over winter. With all this time you have saved by not tidying, you can instead put your feet up and browse plant catalogues or think about presents for green-fingered friends and family. There are some great gardening books available, and one of my favourites has to be any of the IGPOTY series – International garden photographer of the year. For junior gardeners, how about their own trowel and fork set; these are widely available online. For ethicallyminded consumers I would recommend www.greenshopping.co.uk, which has an extensive range of books, tools and toys. Or keep it local and treat a friend to one of the great courses put on by our local permaculture trust https://brightonpermaculture.org.uk or call them on 07746 185927. Or take a look at what our friends at the Garden House have on offer: http://www.gardenhousebrighton.co.uk; 07788 668595. Wishing you all a merry Christmas. Best wishes, Lisa

fiveways BBC book reviewer Gary Mepsted’s Monthly book review...

THE LADY IN THE VAN THE COMPLETE EDITION BY ALAN BENNETT FABER AND FABER/PROFILE BOOKS, HARDBACK. £14.99 Screenplays don’t, as a rule, make for riveting reading. Rather like a blueprint or schemata, they are a beginning, a means to a greater end - a finished movie which hundreds of people from various disciplines and with a range of skills will be involved in. The script and the final film often bear little relation to each other. However, when the screenplay is written by Alan Bennett, the usual rule - screenplays are only likely to ap17apply. peal to cineastes and those in the business - doesn’t “The Lady in the Van” is Bennett’s cinematic treatment of his extremely successful stage play, which began life as a memoir which appeared in his collection “Writing Home”, and which is included in this volume, together with an introduction by the film’s director Nicholas Hytner and Alan Bennett himself. “The Lady in the Van” tells the story of an elderly and wildly eccentric homeless woman, Miss Shepherd, who moved her dilapidated van into Alan Bennett’s front garden in Camden for a short period, only to remain there until her death fifteen years later. The screenplay is shot through with Bennett’s droll humour and, as is the case with all his work, prose and drama, the comedy is merely a screen which masks, but does not conceal, tragedy. I’ve yet to see the film which will open in a few days’ time, but it’s clear from the script that Bennett has wisely opened out the story to accommodate the broader perspective of film without losing any of the play’s energy, focus or theatrical flair. The device of having two Alan Bennetts, the writer and the man, has been retained, with the actor Alex Jennings playing both roles. The book is marvellously complemented with sketches by the artist David Gentleman who was present throughout the shoot, and with a series of photographs of the film being made by Antony Crolla, who currently resides in Ben-

nett’s former house in Gloucester Crescent in whose front garden Miss Shepherd lived between 1974 and 1989. The book is dubbed ‘the complete edition’ which, if one were to quibble, is not quite true. To be complete the volume would need to include Bennett’s stage version of the story which would allow the reader to compare and contrast the theatrical and cinematic scripts. No matter, this is a truly delightful book, and I shall definitely be returning to it once I’ve seen, and no doubt thoroughly enjoyed, the movie. Might I wish you all a very joyous Christmas.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING IN FIVEWAYS Things are starting to look festive around Fiveways so it must be that time of year again. With Christmas around the corner, Fiveways Traders Association looks forward to welcoming you to their third annual late night shopping evening on Thursday 3rd December, with many shops and businesses staying open until 8pm. We are planning mulled wine and mince pies to get you in the festive mood, outdoor stalls selling hand crafted gifts and stocking fillers, and different things happening in each participating business. Expect drinks, giveaways, goodies and special offers. As usual, late night shopping comes just before Small Business Saturday on 5th December, when there will be further promotions, and Santa will be visiting the Wigwam grotto between 10am and 4pm to see the children. He will be bringing his mobile Postbox so the children can post their Christmas letters. We do hope to see you at one or both of these events; look out for posters and flyers around the area. For more information or to participate, contact Clair at Wigwam Toys, wigwamtoysbrighton@gmail.com, or call the shop on 01273 505504.

To make the pastry • Place the flour, ground almonds and butter in a bowl and with your fingers rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. • Add the demerara sugar, almond essence and egg yolk and with a knife bring the mixture together. Sprinkle the work surface with flour and lightly knead the pastry together (don’t over mix). Wrap in cling film and place in the fridge for 30 minutes. • Meanwhile make the marzipan crumble. Place the flour and butter into a bowl and rub in until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the demerara sugar, cinnamon and grated marzipan. • Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to the thickness of a £1 coin. Cut out circles using a pastry cutter and line the 12 hole muffin tin with the almond pastry. • Spoon some mincemeat into each pie leaving room to top the mincemeat with the marzipan crumble mixture. • Bake in the oven at 170C/160C for a fan assisted oven for about 20 minutes until lightly golden. • Using a sprinkling of icing sugar roll the marzipan trimmings out and cut into star shapes to decorate the mince pies. These mince pies are quick and easy to make and a perfect treat to have tucked away in the freezer ready to serve your Christmas guests. I use a 12 hole nonstick muffin tin and these ingredients make 12-14 pies depending on how deep your tins are! Wishing you all a very happy Christmas! Not Fiveways but very much part of a Brighton Christmas...

BURNING THE CLOCKS MONDAY 21ST DECEMBER Burning the Clocks is a lantern parade and fire show which takes place on 21st December each year in Brighton. Founded 21 years ago, it is a unique community event created by Same Sky that brings the whole city together to mark the shortest day. Local people make their own paper and willow lanterns – filled symbolically with their hopes and dreams - and, after processing through the city, they pass them into a blazing bonfire on Brighton beach, as a token of the year’s end. The coming year is then ushered in with a dazzling fire show during which a massive sculpture is 27 sky. ignited, live music plays, and fireworks light up the Burning the Clocks was created as a way for the whole community to enjoy the festive season, regardless of faith or creed, and to act as an antidote to the excesses of the commercial Christmas. Over 20,000 spectators now turn out to watch the 2,000-strong parade and take part in the tradition. Each year a new theme, related to the concept of time, is incorporated into the event to bring new and exciting elements. The theme for 2015 is the cosmos. As part of the event, Same Sky, Brighton’s leading community art charity, carries out free lantern-making community workshops for local community groups. They are encouraged to make something they are proud of, fired up with creative passion and brought together with their community through the shared experience of art. Lantern-making kits and customised lanterns are on sale in December. Burning the Clocks is a free spectator event. The parade leaves from New Road at 6.30pm and arrives at Madeira Drive at approximately 7.15pm, when lanterns are passed onto the bonfire and the fire show begins. The fire show will take place on the beach, with viewing from Madeira Drive and the Upper Terrace on Marine Parade. The finale will contain loud music and pyrotechnics. The event finishes at around 8pm.

If you would like to take part in the parade, please purchase a lantern kit which includes parade wristbands. Participants are asked to arrive promptly at the Corn Exchange at 4.30pm to have their lanterns lit and be lined up safely. Same Sky ask you not to bring home-made lanterns to the event as they compromise safety. People are also asked not to bring Chinese sky lanterns or fireworks to the event. For more information, visit: www.samesky.co.uk Rewards are offered for crowdfunding participants. See: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/605730440/ burning-the-clocks-2015

fiveways News of a charity fundraiser in the New Year...

Get Christmassy at Coachwerks....

CARER-VAN BALL 2016

COACHWERKS CHRISTMAS FAIR

The Carers Centre will be holding a Charity Fundraiser Ball on Friday 12th February 2016.

Coachwerks is going full steam ahead, with more and more events happening, and many more to come.

This will raise funds to buy a caravan to allow carers to take cheap holidays. Often carers have to quit their job in order to carry out their caring role, so many don’t have the money to get away for a few days, which can be essential in allowing them to maintain a healthy balance between their life and their caring role. A caravan available in East Sussex at subsidised rates will allow carers to take holidays more affordably.

Best of all, we’ve got a late licence for New Year, so come and help us take Coachwerks into an even more productive 2016! The wholefoods shop has been delayed due to some structural work, but will be open before Christmas. And check out our website thecoachwerks.wordpress.com for up-coming events. Our Christmas Fayre on December 20th will be filled with all things Christmas, so come along, be jolly, have a festive drink, sing some carols and see what our resident artists have been busy creating...

The ball will take place at the Hilton Brighton Metropole, Kings Road. It will start at 19:00 with welcoming31 drinks, and will include a delicious three-course meal, music courtesy of the Hucksters, a charity auction, and other entertainment. The dress code will be evening wear. Please visit www.thecarerscentre.org for more information on the ball and to book tickets. Tickets cost £70, and a table of 10 can be bought for £700.

If you have any questions, please contact Daniel Eichner at Daniel.eichner@thecarerscentre.org or call him on 01273 746222. We do hope you will be able to join us for this special evening of food, music, dancing and fundraising!

ROOF & FIREWALL Specialists Have you got damp in the corner of a bedroom or along the ceiling of an upstairs wall? Nine times out of ten it’s faulty lead flashings and firewalls causing these problems. The majority of Brighton homes are at least 100 years old and so are their firewalls. Many firewalls are coming to the end of their natural lives. If you want them to last another 100 years we are the FIREWALL experts. If it’s not the lead or the firewall we can help with most other roofing problems from complete reroofing to minor repairs.
