In November 2009, when the city of Berlin was celebrating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a twist of the fate brought together six international artists: Jacqueline Kooter, Shirley Wiebe, Susana Lopez F, Thea Jentjens, Wai Kit Lam and Wai Yi Lai.
1a Space presents Destination Berlin, a group exhibition about the search for individual and collective identity through the work that was created during their shared art residency in the city of Berlin.
We start a journey through their different views and we explore different art techniques from graphite to paint to multimedia art, and we travel to investigate the different faces and interpretations of identity.
Jacqueline, Shirley, Susana, Thea, Kit and Yi investigate concepts such as communication and integration in a city where the unfamiliar language of German made them vulnerable. At the same time, these circumstances help them to go within in order to express and respond to new complexities.

DESTINATION BERLIN: the search of identity.
1a Space is pleased to introduce Destination Berlin, a group exhibition about the search for individual and collective identity through the work of 6 international artists: Jacqueline Kooter, Shirley Wiebe, Susana López F., Thea Jentjens, Wai Kit Lam and Wai Yi Lai.
The concept of identity has been an ongoing discussion between artists and philosophers from the early centuries to the present. We define identity as “the state or fact of remaining the same one or ones under varying aspects or conditions”.
This exhibition reveals six individual glances and expressions on the theme of identity, through a common platform: the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of the German city.
The nomadic and fluctuating qualities that define contemporary life often require us to relocate to another city, a different country, with a new language and cultural background that are different from our own.
Connections between environment, memory and identity form a continuous thread of questioning in Shirley´s work. Much of it is transient and migratory, reflecting our ability to move and relocate, to shift our lives into new settings.
In Destination Berlin, Shirley exhibits two large-scale drawings, the first one created in Berlin, and second, upon returning to Vancouver. The works vividly reflect the experience of being immersed in a new environment and culture through fragmentary elements that appear to float and drift across a surface.
Susana López F. shows in her work a reflection of many hours spent at airports waiting for flights. She explores how airports are places where identity is scrutinized and we become anonymous, but at the same time is the centre of contemporary culture. Destination Berlin

In Destination Berlin, Susana show us Letzter Aufruf. This project is a convergence of both topics from the show: Identity and the reunification of Berlin. In November 2011, Susana travelled to Berlin to give graphic testimony of two airports: Tegel and Schönefeld, which are still memory of that Wall that some day ago divided the city and also the whole world into two: West and East.
And perhaps Identity, that we consider so valuable nowadays, was something people from East Berlin wanted to lose in order to have an anonymous life that let them be free.
Jacqueline Kooter reflects on the lack of freedom to move around using three videos: “Walled in”, “Blocked off” and “Trapped in the city”. These videos are based on her stay in Berlin during the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 2009.
Thea, shows us a series of drawings mostly with architectural elements, a reflection of her long walking tours in the formerly divided city. A reflection about how absurd history can be in a city where most of the official buildings are duplicated because of its old leaders´ search of identity.
As a result of her constant international trips Wai Kit Lam thinks about who She is very often. she feels as Chinese when she is abroad and when she comes home she feels closer to Western culture than Chinese Traditions. During her stay in Berlin in 2009, Wai Kit continues to examinate her identity in this foreign city through a language she does not speak and is not able to understand.
We are going to conclude with Wai Yi Lai´s work. She is a Chinese artist, which work is about the relationship between the environment and people. She looks for her identity through the sorrounding environment, but for her sorrounding environment refers to the correlation between humans and the entities embracing us. In Destination Berlin she shows us a tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Gu . . . and all who have lost their home in China.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Trapped in the city. 2011 Movie
The visual work of Amsterdam based artist Jacqueline Kooter is about both the strength and vulnerability of the human body and about the complexity of human relations.
She works on location as well as in her studio. She started out as a painter, then used painting more and more in site-specific installations.
The last three years she has also made videos and occasionally she has combine her work with contemporary dance in different manners. On these projects she works together with the Rotterdam based contemporary dance-company Conny Janssen Danst.
In the fall of 2009, when Germany was celebrating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Jacqueline Kooter spend a month as an artist-in-residence in Berlin. During her stay, she did research on the building and the fall of the Berlin Wall and on the Ministerium f端r Staatssicherheit (MfS) / the Stasi, the Secret Service of the DDR and their archive and prison in Berlin. Themes such as the lack of freedom to move around, the lack of privacy and individuality versus group behaviour are related to her work in general, so she was inspired by her Berlin-research to make two short (dance)movies: "Walled in" and "Blocked off".

ARTIST STATMENT
The Berlin art residency was a catalyst for me to work in different ways and with less familiar media – to be immersed in another culture and environment, and to simultaneously express new experiences in a process comparable to breathing in and out. The individual studio spaces also functioned as bedroom/living areas, creating the intimate relationship of waking, working and sleeping while continually surrounded by one’s work.
Alongside the focus on three-dimensional construction and materials exploration, I began a daily practice of drawing. Influenced by site and space, I chose to cover one wall of the studio with paper, and to approach it vertically, using a ladder when necessary. The objective was to produce a wall painting, a visual chronicle that recorded impressions and associations from day-to-day life in Berlin. Eventually, over a period of one month, the imagery was to coalesce, fragments informing other fragments, held together in a framework.
One year later I repeated the process in my Vancouver studio, and over a three-month period, another odyssey unfolded on the wall.

ARTIST STATMENT LASTCALL, a blog about airports.
An airport is a tract of levelland where aircrafts land and take off, usually equipped with hard-surfaced landing strips, a control tower, hangars, aircraft maintenance and refueling facilities, as well as accommodations for passengers and cargo. Airports are public and busy spaces, they are the most complex and dynamics station owed to the importance of the air traffic in our times.
But an airport is much more than that. An airport is a conglomeration of all cultures, it is a place of floating bodies of people in limbo, a place where everyone is waiting to be somewhere else, it is a place of contradictions. It is a so called “No-Land, where dead time seems constantly present. An airport is the ultimate waiting room. And yet, it is a center of contemporary culture, a place where identity is scrutinized thoroughly, and also shed like a snakeskin. We become anonymous and homogeneous.
Lastcall is an online diary that show us every airport where some day ago we were waiting at. LastCall was born on July 2010 as a reflection of many hours spent at airports waiting to fly out.
LastCall, is a personal project as well as an open project, it is an invitation to artists and non-artists to share their photos and opinions about the time spent at airports around the world. I invite them to reflect about the use of the new public spaces, to analyze by photo language how limitis between public and private space disappear in an airport terminal.
After two years, this project was shown in PhotoarteKomite Gallery (Bilbao, Spain) in December, 2010. Later in April 2011 LastCall landed in London in Viewfinder Gallery. And in Destination Berlin

THEA JENTJENS Visual artist t.jentjens@kpnplanet.nl www.theajentjens.nl
ARTIST BIO With a background in biology, Thea recived her Bachelor in Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy for Arts and Design in 2001 in Amsterdam.
Her education in science reflects itself in her work where she uses the world as it appears under a microscope as a guide. She works with colour, form and structure to show us images that have been unearthed from memory.
In Destination Berlin she shows us a serie of drawings mostly with architectural elements, a reflection of her long walking tours in the former divided city.
在 Thea Jentjens 專注其專業為藝術家前,她於阿姆斯特丹的 Gerrit Rietveld

ARTIST STATMENT
Before Thea Jentjens graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and started working as a professional artist, she was trained as a biologist and worked as a scientist. This background expressed itself in paintings where she uses the world as it appears under the microscope as a guide. Not what can be seen, but how it can be seen in terms of depth and the suggestion of an infinite number of layers.
For her the canvas is a test site for experiments with colour, form and structure. This playing with the materials allows her to create images that have been unearthed from memory. Over the years a switch in attention from the microscopical world to architectual spaces can be seen in her paintings.
In 2009 she was invited to stay in an Art Residency in Berlin, where she became interested in the attemps to make the former divided city, one city again. Her long walking tours of Berlin have led to a series of drawings, mostly with architectual elements. In the series of paintings that followed, she brought architecture into her microscopical world. She paints buildings or parts of buildings as if they are seen through a microscope.

I wanted to do evil. 2009 Digital print Undelivered Letters “… reading a book without understanding it … meeting someone without knowing him/her…”
In the second month of my stay in Berlin, I continued to examine my identity in this foreign city through language. The new piece is based on a book that I found in a second-hand store. It was once belonged to someone called Alexander Simon and that he had highlighted some sentences in the book. I reinterpreted those German sentences by my own interpretation, in which I could not understand the language and the content. The understanding of the content is not important; it is rather a link of the relationship between the unknown Alexander Simon and me instead.
These images are accomplished with individuals sound that is a response of the unknow language that she encountered.

Wai-Yi, Lai (Monti) 黎慧儀 Born in 1977, Hong Kong waiyilai@gmail.com http://waiyilai.blogspot.com.es/
ARTIST BIO Wai-Yi Lai is a visual artist who was born in Hong Kong in 1977. After she graduated in Fine Arts by the Royal Melbourne Institute of technology, she moved to Helsinky (Filand) to obtein her MA in Environmental Art in Aalto Universtiy.
Her work is about the relationship between the environment and people. She does not understand Environmental Arts as nature or lanscape, her work goes further on, it is about the correlation between humans and the entities embracing us. In Destination Berlin she shows us a tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Gu . . . and all who have lost their home in China.

ARTIST STATMENT
This is a documentation of my visit at Bei Gao in the eastern part of Beijing near the Fifth Ring Road in 2010.
That was the first time I spent more than half a year in Mainland China alone. As a “foreigner in my home country”, I have a strong craving and eagerness to get closer to the real life of China. A decision was made quickly when my friend told me there is a village nearby to be demolished soon. I visited the village the next day with my camera. Without any obvious purpose, a map or a route, I walked in the village, wandering around. Listening, observing and reading the changes happening on the village and on the people. The villagers perhaps found me suspicious while having a camera on my neck, especially the officials. Unexpectedly, I was invited by a middle age woman (Mrs. GU) to shot her house before it will be demolished the next day. I am absolutely not a photographer, yet I agreed to help when I knew that she did not know how to function the digital camera given by her daughter. After an hour of shooting every corner of the house, Mr. and Mrs. GU offered me tea and apple as refreshment. Then we started talking. From the time when the house was built to the future of their daughter, they told me her daughter worries them as she is not as social as me and not sure if she can find a job with good prospect. Also shared their plan after moving and complained about the small amount of compensation they received from the government. They care about me being an artist, single, still at this age as well. Somehow I feel like we have had known each other for years. And I was sad to leave them when I know it is perhaps the last time ever to talk to them.
This is a tribute to Mr. and Mrs. GU…and all who have lost their home in China.
