JACK HUSTON INTERVIEW ELLA HAGI / EDITOR IAN COLE
CC: Where did you learn the art of acting? JH: From a young age i was always on stage. I remember doing my first school play when i was about seven years old and i loved it. For me, everything clicked and i just loved to perform. I also studied as an artist, and alongside that i always knew i wanted to be an actor. When i was sixteen i went to Hurtwood House, a pre-drama school, where i did a crash course. I attained a lot of stage knowledge there. I believe in 'learning from doing', and I made it my business to learn the craft from all sides including stage management, as something of an understudy. From this, i learned from 'watching people' - the more you pay attention, the more you learn. CC. Your uncle is actor Danny Huston and you've played together in Two Jacks. How does this differ from working with someone you've perhaps never met before? JH: Well actually, we had already worked together on a movie called Boogie Woogie, but we weren't actually in scenes together, as the parts were separate. But working with family brings utter trust to the project and as we're huge movie buffs, it's great to work together. Saying that, i find that working with new people can be very exciting too. CC. You've also worked with people like Al Pacino and Ray Winstone. What have those experiences been like? Who were the most interesting people to work with? JH: Al was amazing, with his age and experience in this business, he is STILL so excited by the whole process. He works and works and he is so enthusiastic - you really feel the passion and i find this infectious. This was one of my greatest experiences, especially as he actually directed. Ray is a fantastic actor and such fun to work with. Working with John Hurt was like having a great mentor, he is an amazing actor and i learnt a lot from watching him. Peter Blythe was also a wonderful actor who meant a lot to me and unfortunately he is no longer with us. These are people who have been
magical to work. CC. Out of the projects you've acted in, what has shaped you the most? As an actor or as a person? JH: I would say the TV show Boardwalk Empire. My character Richard Harrow is a far cry from who i am and it’s taught me how to play characters. To play someone who is similar to yourself i would find terribly boring! I think this was a pivotal moment for me because it showed me that i can play ANY character. This gave me self-belief as an actor and as a human being. CC. You have played in theatre before - how do the two mediums differ from one another? JH: I started in theatre and i love the immediacy of it. In film you have to break up the scenes, so it's more time consuming, where as theatre is more of an instant thrill. I am doing a play in September and this will be my first time in theatre in seven years. Watching everything come together from rehearsals is a great buzz for me. One performance is never the same as the other, night by night, so that makes it magical. I've actually missed it incredibly and feel excited to do both. CC. Is there a certain role you feel more comfortable playing? JH: No. If you get comfortable you die. One should always be challenging oneself. Find things that aren't comfortable and if people can see that you are being challenged in the role, they will find it more exciting. CC. How do you mentally prepare yourself for a new role? JH: It depends entirely on what the role is. If it's a real person who existed, then you can do a lot of research, including a lot of reading and watching film. Then you can decide which bits are important to you, which you can take and use. If it's a fictionalise character, i simply draw from life. For me, i need to get to a place were i think 'I can play this guy.'
CC. Are there any roles where you've felt like you should've done something different or better? A role where you weren't really 100% pleased? JH: Yes, many - 80% lol. Up until three years ago, i was never entirely happy about what i did. Sometimes it takes time to find your 'groove' and i feel i only found mine about three years ago. Now i feel i'm doing things that i'm proud of. It's not that i am not proud of previous roles, it's all part of the learning process. CC. If you can choose to play any role you want. What would it be and why that specific part? JH: We're actually working on something now, which i can't really go into. But i am desperate to play Erol Flynn! I find his story absolutely fascinating. I feel so right for this part. CC. Similarly, who would be that one director you dream of working together with? JH: I couldn't name one, so i will name some of my favourites! Martin Scoresee - because of his history in film. I think he's the most important film maker of our generation. The Coen Brothers because of the way they weave a tale together. Steven Spielberg - the scope of his films are cinematically brilliant and his characters are so well rounded. Wes Anderson - I love his awkward, quirky style. It's utterly original which is hard to do in todays film world. CC. You have one film in postproduction and starting to work on another one. What else is in plan for the future? JH: I'm currently in the middle of negotiating with an incredible director (tba) for a play and a few TV shows that are in development. I've just joined an incredible cast for a new drama with director David O. Russell, which includes Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence. I've also wrote a film and had several offers. Anything to keep the child fed! Thank you Jack Huston!

YT : Good day Mr. Neff. It's nice to see you and work together again.
were young. When you were a child, did you understand and like fashion?
GN: You as well, Mr. Tsai.
GN: If you would have asked me then, I would have said, "Yes". But now, looking back I would say, "No way that is or was fashion". ( laughs ) In retrospect, I rarely give myself enough credit.
YT: Is Garrett Neff your real name? GN: Yes, Garrett Neff is my real and official name. It’s such a difficult name to pronounce for so many people that speak different languages, and in the U.S. it’s so uncommon. Is Yu Tsai your real name? YT: Actually, the full name would be Daniel Yu Tsai. I decided to drop the American name "Daniel", after I graduated college. In high school though, I had a Future Farmers of America jacket that actually had Daniel embroidered on the left chest. GN: Daniel? I don't see it. YT: Me neither - anymore. GN: Wait... Future Farmers of America? What? ( puzzled ) YT: ( shrugs ) Yeah, I thought farming was going to be my future. I used to show pigs and cattle at county fairs. But, all the same - in this industry I am still surrounded by people that behave like farm animals. Maybe some just prettier than others. You are one of the pretty ones of course - more like a show pony. GN : ( Laughs ) Thanks. I guess. YT : So when did you decide to get into the modeling business? GN : I didn't decide - it just happened. I was taking a college course in Barbados during the summer between my junior and senior years. I believe we were studying economics in a tourism based economy but I don’t remember, its a bit foggy. I just remember having a really fun time and then getting scouted at the Miami airport. I was 21. YT: That must have been exciting because you seem to be a pretty fashionable guy. Fashion must have been in your blood, even when you
YT: ( puzzled ) Explain yourself - then and now please... GN : Well, I remember being very specific about what I wore from an early age, but I think it had more to do with comfort and rebellion. My mom dressed me in Lacoste and Ralph Lauren, and I was just as happy in something that I traded for from lost and found. I liked unique clothing until middle school. That's when labels became important, which is the point where I would have told you I was into fashion. Looking back, there’s no way that was fashion. YT: Hope you kept the clothes. Fashion always comes back in style and we call it "vintage". GN: ( laughs ) Right! YT: Do you remember your very first modeling job experience? GN : Yes, I will never forget it. It was for GQ on Good Morning America. We wore the back to school looks for Fall. I had to walk out on a tiny runway. I was scared out of my mind and I think my jaw was so tight that I wouldn’t have been able to produce sound. ( laughs ) Oh yeah, and my call time was really early in the morning so I don’t think I slept the night before. YT : I'm sure you didn't realize then, what this business had in store for you. You've had a great career so far. Today, with more understanding of fashion, who and what inspires you? GN : I think I’m most inspired by the other people in the fashion world. Designers like Karl Lagerfeld and photographers like Bruce Weber who have been able to stay consistent over the years and who are humble, loyal and generous beyond your wildest imagina-
tion. YT: It sounds like you have a great relationship with Bruce? GN: Bruce was my biggest supporter when I first started modeling. YT: I am certain you were in good hands. Bruce has launched many models' careers. GN : Bruce Weber showed me the best side of this mysterious and fickle industry. We collaborated many times during my early years. He taught me that modeling isn't just about your looks. One must have that inner dialog with him or herself that allows them to dream and be transported somewhere. The shoots are normally in beautiful places so its not always hard to imagine the things that make you feel what you need to, to make that amazing picture. So yeah, Bruce is a real sweetheart. YT: Last time we spoke, you were telling me about your own passion for photography. Are you still shooting? GN: Yes, very much so. YT: Will we be seeing them soon? GN: Soon, I promise. In fact, I am working on my website now. I will be sharing my own photographs on the site. I have been taking lots of pictures during my travels. YT: I can't wait to see them. Where was the best place you have ever traveled? GN: Alaska was amazing!!! Flying in was an experience of its own - so beautiful. If not there, then maybe Jamaica. I stayed at the resort where Ian Flemming wrote all of his James Bond films. I sat at the same desk. It was surreal. YT: That's really cool. Well, I would say you're a graduate of the modeling business now. For those aspiring models out there, how would you describe modeling? GN: Being a model isn't the most difficult profession in the world. It has its
moments though, where all you want to do is stop and take a break because you're cold or sick or have personal things on your mind, but the sun is going down and another day of production can mean lots and lots of money to the client and you just push through it and forget that you have to take care of yourself the way you normally would. YT : It's a job that comes with responsibilities but like me, you get to travel around the world a few times. GN : Traveling is amazing, but after a while, the travel takes a toll on you, mentally and physically. I do think if anyone has the opportunity to do it, they absolutely should! You get to travel to some of the most beautiful places in the world, and experience everything that comes with that...new cultures, food, and climates.
YT : I never get tired of traveling. I love it. Only thing I miss is my French Bulldog, Soy when I am gone. GN : I feel privileged to have that opportunity. I think traveling helps break down barriers we have with others. To become a minority in a different way is exciting. You witness the local tragedies and triumphs, and this makes you appreciate who you are and where you come from, and understand where your role is in the world. The best part is that you're constantly surrounded with some of the most talented and creative people in the business. I'm inspired on a daily basis. YT : Did you figure out what your role in this world is yet? GN : Enjoy every moment of it.
YT: Ditto. What's next for you? GN: I am really focused on building my website. Other than that, my friends and I have this ongoing joke. We record and edit ourselves in faux pas situations. Laughing with friends is so important, you know? YT: I know. I enjoy laughing at myself even more. Maybe you should share those videos on your site too? SELIM DE SOMAVILLA INTERVIEW BY MARIE-CLAUDE LAMB
Selim De Somavilla was born in Barcelona - after graduating in 2005 he worked as part of the team at Martin Lamothe for two collections. He also studied at the London College of Fashion and worked at The Rodnik Band. With his love for menswear and belief in unisex wear, De Somavilla has grown from strength to strength with his collections. Selim spoke with MarieClaude Lamb about his style and fashion rules... MC: Where were you born and raised? SDS: I was born in Barcelona where at the moment my brand is based. MC: Where did you study? SDS: I was formed as a fashion designer between Barcelona and London. I specialized in menswear the last years of my degree and focused it with tailoring in London College of Fashion. MC: Where have you worked/what is your design background? SDS: I have worked in different brands such as the Spanish Martin Lamothe or The Rodnik Band in London. I soon started my own brand. MC: If you were stranded on a desert island, what five things would you bring from your wardrobe?
SDS: I would take a hat, a summer scarf, a waterproof gabardine, cool underwear and perfume. MC: What is your new collection about? SDS: KNOCKOUT is the spring-summer actual proposal where the contrasts are evident: fabrics usually related to female break the barrier for being worn by a refined man with strength of character. A struggle between the inherent and change. Thematically it smells of combat. Alessio Arena, a great friend writer and singer has expressed it very well: “Always, in history, the world has been dominated by men. But male chauvinist inertia, over time, has been looking for shortcuts to a lighter interpretation of itself, with its inevitable blindness of violence. Alpha and omega of the virile, strong sex becomes weak (or vice versa), the man of Selim de Somavilla drops to the invisible ground of the heaviest fighting, which has been evading from age to age: the challenge that faces its own history and mythologies.” MC: Who's your celebrity style icon or muse? SDS: I have different kind of celebrity style icons. I love Tom Ford himself or the model Johannes Huebl. For woman Tilda Swinton or Kristen Stewart. MC: Who is your ideal client? SDS: My ideal client is a man with an interest in something different with taste in quality of fabrics and details. The garments I create are for daring and elegant people with a touch of masculine finesse. MC: How would you describe your style? SDS: I do not understand the man without a touch of feminine influence without losing masculinity. That’s where my style starts. There are no limits: all colors, prints and fabrics are viable in my garments. MC: Plans for 2013? SDS: At the moment I’m working on my next S/S ’14 collection. Some interesting collaborations I’m working still with and the online shop. MC: What's one fashion rule that everyone should break? SDS: Trends. The actual moment for us designers is to show creativity and new things coming. It’s almost everything done but we have to believe in our own design with no boundaries.
