Mayer Hawthorne has come a long way since his 2008 debut, and right now, he says, “Life is great.” He’s released two well-received full-length albums, had songs licensed for film and television, and toured the world with Bruno Mars, Foster The People, Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, and the late Amy Winehouse. In the last five years, Mayer has grown as a singer, songwriter and in his desire for collaboration. Working with touring partners like Winehouse and Badu bolstered his vocal chops by teaching him how to use his voice as an instrument. Lyrically, he’s moved away from the bitter break-up tone of his first two albums toward more diverse storytelling and personal coming-of-age content, and he’s relaxed his DIY ethos of crafting every song from start to finish. Now, he’s motivated to create soul music that can win—win on the radio, win on the charts, win over clubs and win over hearts.

PRESENTED BY SINGLETARY CENTER FOR THE ARTS Savion Glover is a Tony-winning, hoofer, choreographer and producer. His numerous credits include the Broadway shows “The Tap Dance Kid;” “Black and Blue;” “Jelly’s Last Jam;” and “Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk,” and the films “Tap” with Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr.; “Bamboozled” by Spike Lee; and “Happy Feet 1 and 2,” an Academy Award-winner choreographed by Glover. Under the direction of Glover, STePz is yet another exuberant celebration of tap dance to sound and sound to dance. In this dance production of Savion Glover’s STePz Glover and his ensemble of dancers take tap dance to new heights and levels while fusing traditional music selections of the past with his self-proclaimed tap style and energy of the future. This production of Savion Glover’s STePz exposes Glover’s capability of all complexities of jazz phrasing, both bass line and melody, the wild improvisations, structures and deconstruction, from departure to return. Savion Glover’s STePz once again displays the infinite versatility and virtuoso of Glover’s genius as a tap master.

A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of twelve. He has since evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugal horn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer. Sandoval has been awarded 9 Grammy awards, and nominated 17 times. He has also received 6 Billboard Awards and an Emmy award, the latter for his composing work on the entire underscore of the HBO movie based on his life, “For Love or Country,” starring Andy Garcia. One frequently speaks of Sandoval’s virtuoso technical ability or his specialty in high notes, but he who has seen him on the piano, lyrically improvising a ballad, or has had the opportunity to enjoy the diversity of his music, through his compositions from the most straight ahead jazz, Latin jazz or classical, knows that Sandoval is a the most multifaceted musician of our time.

If one word applies to Lang Lang, to the musician, to the man, to his worldview, to those who come into contact with him, it is “inspiration.” It resounds like a musical motif through his life and career. He inspires millions with his open-hearted, emotive playing, whether it be in intimate recitals or on the grandest of stages – such as the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where more than four billion people around the world viewed his performance, the Last Night of the Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall, or the Liszt 200th birthday concert with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Charles Dutoit which was broadcast live in more than 300 movie theaters around the United States and 200 cinemas across Europe (the first classical music cinemacast to be headlined by a solo artist). He forms enduring musical partnerships with the world’s greatest artists, from conductors such as Daniel
Barenboim, Gustavo Dudamel and Sir Simon Rattle, to artists from outside of classical music – among them dubstep dancer Marquese “nonstop” Scott, king of the crooners Julio Inglesias and jazz titan Herbie Hancock. “Time Magazine” has recently included Lang Lang in the “Time 100”, the magazine’s annual list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World, naming him as a symbol of the youth of China, and its future. Lang Lang is the cultural ambassador of the cities of Shenzhen and Shenyang. In July 2012 he relayed the London Olympic torch in London just before the opening of the XXX Olympiad.

PINK MARTINI

Is it world music or is it classical music? Is it jazz or is it samba? If you think one band couldn’t possibly do them all, have a listen to the 12-piece “little orchestra” called Pink Martini.
“Pink Martini is like a romantic Hollywood musical of the 1940s or 50s – but with a global perspective which is modern,” says founder and artistic director, Thomas M. Lauderdale. “We bring melodies and rhythms from different parts of the world together to create something which is new and beautiful.”
Drawing inspiration from music all over the world – crossing genres of classical, jazz and old fashioned pop – Lauderdale founded the “little orchestra” in 1994 in Portland, OR. All twelve members of Pink Martini come from multicultural families, studying different languages, as well as different styles of music from different parts of the world. At one moment you feel like you are in the middle of a samba parade in Rio de Janeiro, and in the next moment, you are in a French music hall of the 1930s or a palazzo in Napoli.

MOSCOW BALLET PRESENTS GREAT RUSSIAN NUTCRACKER The origin of The Nutcracker, a classic Christmas story, is a fairy tale ballet in two acts centered on a family’s Christmas Eve celebration. Alexandre Dumas Père’s adaptation of the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann was set to music by Tchaikovsky and originally choreographed by Marius Petipa. It was commissioned by the director of Moscow’s Imperial Theatres, Ivan Vsevolozhsky, in 1891, and premiered a week before Christmas 1892. Since premiering in western countries in the 1940s, this ballet has become perhaps the most popular to be performed around Christmas time. The story centers on a young girl’s Christmas Eve and her awakening to the wider world and romantic love. The composer made a selection of eight of the more popular pieces before the ballet’s December 1892 premiere, forming what is currently known as the Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, as is heard in Moscow Ballet productions. The suite became instantly popular; however the complete ballet did not achieve its great popularity as a Christmas performance event until almost 100 years later.
