Housing & Residence Life DOMINION & FRANCE HOUSE MOVE-IN GUIDE Exit Only ARRIVING TO CAMPUS Saturday, August 24, 2013 All Dominion and France House residents should arrive on campus Saturday, August 24, 2013. Residents will check in at the Dominion House Community Room (located on the map by the green dot). Move-in times are assigned according to the ﬁrst letter of your last name. The schedule is as follows: 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Last names beginning with the letters W-Z 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Last names beginning with the letters S-V 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Last names beginning with the letters O-R 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Last names beginning with the letters K-N 2:00 p.m. –3:00 p.m. Last names beginning with the letters G-J 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Last names beginning with the letters D-F 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Last names beginning with the letters A-C In order to check-in, you must have your ODU identiﬁcation card. Once arriving, our staff will activate your ID for your meal plan and building access. Enter the Quad area from 48th Street off Powhatan Avenue; staff will be there to direct you! EARLY ARRIVAL If you need to arrive early to campus due to a required University sponsored activity, including Preview, you can submit an Early Arrival Request. A $25.00 fee will be assessed to your student account for every night you check in prior to August 24th. Please check with your University sponsored group to determine if the group is paying for your arrival or if you will be responsible for the costs. Please visit our website beginning August 1 for more information regarding requesting an early arrival. LATE ARRIVAL ODU ID CARD If you have not gotten your University ID card you must proceed to the Monarch Card Center, located in the Webb Center, prior to checking in. If you will not be arriving to campus on the date of your scheduled move-in, please contact our office at firstname.lastname@example.org with your full name, building assignment and University Identification Number (UIN) number to alert us of your arrival date. BEFORE MOVING TO CAMPUS CHECKLIST Review the “What to Bring/ What Not to Bring” to campus list on the housing website: www.odu.edu/housing Contact your roommate(s) Read the Housing & Residence Life Policies and Procedures Handbook located on our website Purchase and pack necessary items Review family insurance for covering belongings while staying with us Get your ODU ID card PARKING & TRANSPORTATION Parking permits will be on sale August 1. If you are bringing a car to campus, you can order your parking pass on-line through the Parking & Transportation Services website: www.odu.edu/af/parking/ in advance of your arrival. Additionally, the shuttle bus schedules and routes are posted on www.odutransit.com. ROOM FURNISHINGS All rooms come with basic furnishings to meet your everyday needs. You will have a closet, desk with chair, dresser and bed. Additionally, apartments include a sofa, two chairs and dining room table. If you would like to see your speciﬁc room style, ﬂoor plans are located on our website for each individual building. GARBAGE & RECYCLING Garbage and packing items tend to create a lot of waste during move in. Please consider unpacking appliances from boxes or removing tubes from carpets prior to arriving to reduce packing materials. Additionally, we ask that you not leave trash in the hallways. There are dumpsters for waste disposal conveniently located near each building. SHIPPING ITEMS If you would like to mail some of your belongings prior to arriving on campus, you may do so by contacting our ofﬁce for details and addresses. If items are shipped in advance, please note the residence halls do not begin mail delivery until the ﬁrst week of classes so it is best not to mail items you will need upon your immediate arrival to campus. MEAL PLANS You can begin using your meal plan on August 23rd. You have the option to change your meal plan one time during the Meal Plan Change Period; you can change your meal plan online at www.odu.edu/cardcenter starting August 30th through September 7th for the fall semester and/or January 14th through January 18th for the spring semester. If you need additional information please stop in the Card Center located in Webb University Center to pick up a meal plan brochure, visit www.odu.edu/cardcenter, or email email@example.com PROPERTY INSURANCE Prior to moving to campus review your family’s insurance to determine if your belongings will be covered while you attend ODU. Your family’s homeowners insurance may cover this. If your family’s homeowners insurance does not provide coverage, we recommend you purchase renters insurance. ODU is not liable for your personal belongings while you reside on campus. Pack smart! Use boxes and bags to allow for quicker move-in PETS If you would like a companion while at college we do allow fish to accompany you to ODU. Otherwise, please do not bring pets to visit or live with you while you reside on campus. BICYCLE REGISTRATION As part of the City of Norfolk compliance, all bikes on campus need to be registered. The University Police are happy to assist you with registration at either of their locations in the University Village or Powhatan Apartments. DIRECTIONS TO CAMPUS Check-in will be in the Dominion House Community Room, located on the corner of 49th St. and Elkhorn Ave. From the North: 1. Take I-95 south toward Richmond 2. Exit at 84A (left exit) onto I-295 south, follow signs for Norfolk/ VA Beach. 3. Off I-295 south take exit 28A onto I-64 east 4. Continue on I-64E until exit 276, VA 406/Naval base/ Terminal Blvd., proceed to exit. 5. Stay to the right on the exit ramp to reach Terminal Blvd. 6. Continue through two traffic lights; at the third light make a left onto Hampton Blvd. 7. Follow Hampton Blvd. until you reach 49th St.; make a right onto 49th St. then follow the map on the previous page. From the South: 1. Take I-85 north or I-95 north to Route 58 east. 2. Follow Route 58 east to I-264 east toward Portsmouth/ Norfolk. 3. Go through the Downtown Tunnel and follow the signs to St. Paul’s Blvd. Make the right turn onto St. Paul’s Blvd. 4. At the third light make a left onto Brambleton Ave. Stay on Brambleton Ave. until you see signs for Hampton Blvd./ODU. 5. Bear right onto Hampton Blvd. 6. Follow Hampton Blvd until you reach 49th St.; make a left onto 49th St. then follow the map on the previous page. SMOKING Smoking is prohibited inside all of our residential facilities.
