Malacanang hit for barring Davao reporters in forum

DAVAO DEL NORTE l DAVAO DEL SUR lDAVAO DEL ORIENTALl COMPOSTELA VALLEY

D

AVAO City - The local chapter of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) slammed Malacanang for barring around 20 reporters from covering the second day (November 6) of the Philippine Development Forum on the Bangsamoro. In a statement, NUJP Davao City chair Jessie Casalda said the move to bar around 20 members of the Davao media from entering the venue was an act of disrespect. The forum was held at the SMX Convention Center in Lanang, Davao City. Casalda demanded an explanation from organizers of the event as well as

the Office of the President. “It was, by all measure, disrespectful for the Office of the President to invite journalists to cover an important event and later shame them by disallowing entry to the forum where the President himself was to deliver a speech on the government’s efforts to ensure the progress of the Bangsamoro and the people of Mindanao,” Casalda said. “The act was a form of harassment of the members of the Fourth EState whose only intention was to cover the forum. It was, at the same time, a classic act of clipping media freedom by a government that supposedly banners transparency

and accountability.” NUJP said the Palace was yet to issue a statement on the incident. “However, a member of the Malacanang Media Accreditations and Relations Office (Maro) was only heard saying there were too many journalists covering the event already,” the NUJP added. But members of the Davao media noted that a group of Manila-based reporters was allowed easy access to the venue despite having arrived past the “cut-off time”. In a post on her Facebook account, MindaNews and Our Mindanao editorin-chief Carolyn O. Arguillas said the organizers

could not seem to agree on the cut-off time for the entry of reporters who wanted to cover the forum. Arguillas said one of the organizers said the cut-off time was 9:00 a.m., another one said 9:30 a.m. and yet another one said 10:00 a.m. “And yet you allowed the Malacanang Press Corps in even if they came past your supposed cut-off? We have no quarrel with the Malacanang beat reporters, it’s their right to cover just as it is the right of local reporters to cover. “But you have cut-off for locals and no cut-off for Malacanang reporters, expect the local media to protest — those who were barred and those of us who

were already inside. “If your institutional memory started only in 2010, we have a longer institutional memory. We have a long history of walkouts and quarrels with the entrance guards. When will you ever learn? “P.S. Please learn to respect the media accreditation cards issued by government for us to gain access to the coverage venue. If you in government can’t honor these cards, please do not issue them anymore!” Arguillas said. Other Mindanao-based journalists also posted on Facebook their own negative experiences in covering events involving President Aquino, former presidents

and other high officials from Manila. The NUJP also questioned the singling out of DavaoToday.com photographer Ace Morandante even if the other reporters were already allowed to enter around 11:30 a.m. Thursday. “We also demand an explanation from the Office of the President why it singled out Morandante despite the proper accreditation and endorsement given to him from the Philippine Information Office, the state’s information arm,” Casalda said. “It is disconcerting to think that the proclivity of the Aquino administration to treat media with disrespect is becoming one of the bad habits of the Aquino administration.” “We take this as a symptom of a plague that hit the psyche of the administration – paranoia. And we ask — what kind of government is afraid of its people?” (MindaNews)

Agusan del Sur town chose greening program than NPA

ORETO, Agusan del Sur - This remote river town of Agusan del Sur had been dubbed by the Philippine Army as “ hotbed of insurgency” over the past years but that stigma is slowly being expunged by the people’s passion to plant and grow trees through the National Greening Program (NGP) introduced by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources EXTRAJUDICIAL SETTLEMENT AMONG HEIRS Notice is hereby given that the intestate state of Deceased ELNORA R. NGP to solve the problem and sealed the doom of the activities and influence of the New Peoples’ Army (NPA) NPA Guerilla Front 34 under Kumander Boyet Tindugan in Loreto” Mayor Otaza said. Mayor Otaza thanked the DENR Secretary Ramon J.P Paje and Regional Director of the Caraga Nonito M. Tamayo for their tireless efforts in bringing an effective reforestation program in that town. As a result, the campaign against the rebels and illegal logging were made easier when

people are occupied and tending their tree farms instead of spending time hearing lectures from the communist guerillas. The Commanding General of the East Mindanao Command Lt. Gen. Raineer Cruz III handed a Plaque of Recognition award to Mayor Otaza during that anniversary for the successful campaign against insurgency . Mayor Otaza believes the introduction of the NGP was crucial in the antiinsurgency campaign when the DENR implemented the

program through Executive Order No. 26 signed by President Benigno S. Aquino III on February 2011. “When I assumed office as their newly elected town Mayor in 2013 elections, I was able to identify poverty, unemployment and insurgencyas the three major problems that driven most of the residents in illegal logging activities,” Otaza said in an interview . “The struggle indeed was hard for a budding local chief executive like me fighting a war in three fronts and poverty was the tough-

Bonbon. It was constructed in front of Barangay Bonbon’s chapel. An engineer from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) visited our school administrator and teachers to tell us that four classrooms will soon be built in front of the school flagpole. We were excited since we really needed additional classrooms to provide the schoolchildren more space to inspire them in their studies. Another project being mulled by school authorities is a concrete pathway to enable teachers and students

easy access to classrooms, buildings, and facilities. The school had just been a recipient to a school toilet from the DPWH. The new school administrator was thankful that the toilet was completed during his watch and made a commitment to take good care of it. A few days after the toilet was turned over to the school, a water faucet was taken. The next day, all the faucets were lost! The vandals also had a field day scribbling nonsensible words on the walls. The school head emphasized the need to use the

The caretaker was ordered to make good his duties. On the whole, the school has been blessed and looks forward to more good fortunes to come. We have been giving pointers to our students to take good care of our school facilities and keep our surroundings clean as we do our home. Doing good brings blessings.

But the landscape of Loreto began to change when people started to engage themselves on tree farming program offered by DENR through the NGP. “Suddenly, the people in almost all the 17 barangays of Loreto became interested in the NGP,“ Mayor Otaza said. “it became a byword in every household,” he added. There was a time, he said, when the people in Barangay Kauswagan, a mass-base supporters of the NPA were rushing to meet a delivery truck filled with rubber tree seedlings from an NGP contractor so they can grab seedlings for their farm. “I have never seen the people so much interested in planting rubber trees on their farm as that one,” Mayor Otaza said. “It was a great transformation of that village from NPA to NGP,” he said. A kilo of rubber sap commands a price of P44 to P 47 a kilo. Transporting these products to the local market from the farms is being made easier by the construction of a road network initiated by Mayor Otaza in coordination with the Department of Public Works and Highways. Garage and parking space first before buying a car A legislative measure soon tackled in Congress requires people to have a parking space or garage in their residences first before they are allowed to buy a motor vehicle. This reportedly is under a bill which seeks to address the problem of traffic congestion in Metro Manila because of the huge number of vehicles. Somr call it absurd but House Bill 5098, which seeks to reduce the number of vehicles that are being parked in the streets due to lack of parking space, may have some sound reasons after all. It is public knowledge that owners of private ve-

Editorial hicles are using the streets and alleys as their own garage, causing traffic obstruction to motorists and pedestrians. And this is true even in Mindanao cities. Motor vehicle owners should be made responsible to provide a permanent parking space for their private vehicles in their residences, and not park their vehicles in the streets which are public domains. The street is intended for motorists and pedestrians and should not be used as personal parking

space for these vehicles. Anyone who buys a motor vehicle is presumed to be able to provide a parking facility for their vehicle.. Under the bill, any person who intends to buy a car should first execute an affidavit before a notary public attesting to the availability of a parking space for the vehicle, the proposal states. The affidavit shall be presented to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) as a pre-requisite for car registration. The document must be kept on file and shall be produced when there exists a claim or evidence to the contrary that the parking space or

facility attested therein does not exist. Well and good. The measure also provides that penalties for violation include the revocation of the motor vehicle registration and a fine of P50,000 for the car owner. The owner shall not also be allowed to register any vehicle under his name for three years. Any official or employees of LTO who allows the registration of motor vehicle without a permanent parking space shall be suspended from office for three months without pay. This is a sound proposal. It needs full public support.

A WASTE OF TAXPAYER’S MONEY? From the past to the present time, government bureaucracy existed due to the tolerance and NOT so serious watch of taxpayers money by the so called watchdog agencies of the government of public funds, such agencies like the COMMISSION ON AUDIT, (COA), OMBUDSMAN OFFICES, (as prosecution arm against “SCALAWAGS” in the government bureaucracy, CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION, and INTERNAL AFFAIR OFFICES of all government agencies, who are supposed to be the guardians of taxpayers money. Several billions of public funds were lost at the expense of the Pilipino people, notwithstanding the recent controversial PDAP

and DAP involving people in congress and executive department Some smart people in the government, either elected or appointed, cleverly manipulated the pocketing of public funds by passing measures which had the legal semblance of CALAMITY FUNDS, PEACE AND ORDER FUNDS, EMERGENCY FUNDS, INTELLIGENCE FUNDS, and other funds NOT SUBJECT to audit by the COA. To me, this can be called LEGAL CORRUPTION, which are IMMORAL and ABOMINATION before the eyes of GOD. These legal maneuvering of public funds are happening today, at the barangays, municipalities, cities, provinces levels up

to the national government agencies, including judicial departments. Only the conscience of all public officials involved will convict them before the eyes of GOD. What people want to see in the ground are concrete projects, not the baloney talks. The recently held BIMPGT TRADE FAIR and BUSINESS LEADERS’ CONFERENCE in Davao City, was a great success (daw?) according to Mindanao Development Authority (MDA) director Montene-

gro. He even boosted that the unquantifiable profit that the people of the region had gained, like hotels, restaurants and other amenities profiting a questionable income of about P17- million (Guestimates) compared to the actual government expenditures of P15- million. This is an out- right lie, because no such accounting was made on the Seventeen Million pesos profit, for it is all hanging in the air. Had the taxpayers money been used in the construction of roads leading to the tourist spots, the people will be happy. Opol, A Brown sign MOU for multi-million water project Bukidnon • Camiguin • Lanao del Norte • Lanao del Sur • Misamis Occidental • Misamis Oriental

By Cheng Ordonez Gerry Gorit and Mark Francisco of Mindanao Daily News

The local government of Opol town in Misamis Oriental and A Brown Company Inc. sealed a memorandum of understanding, Friday, November 7, 2014, for a bulk water project under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). The MOU signing officially binds Opol-LGU and A Brown Company Inc. to the conduct of Detailed Feasibility Study intended for Municipal Bulk Water Supply Project, which will cost from P500 million up to a billion for the proponentcompany, A Brown. Opol Mayor Maximino B. Seno said the people of

Opol have long been dreaming of sufficient water supply, especially households living in the upper portion of the town and who have to wake up late at night or at early dawn to gather water from the faucets provided by the Cagayan de Oro Water District due to intermittent water supply. Upon completion of the water project, situated in Barangay Tingalan the town will be provided 15 million litters per day for five years, more than enough the water supply needed by the residents of Opol. In the suceeding years, the capacity may reach up to 25 million litters per day, and the neighboring town of Alubijid and Laguindingan may also benefit from the

project. Dr. Walter Brown, chairman of A Brown Group of Companies, assures local executives during the MOU signing, held at the Legislative Building, that as soon as A Brown sets in on a community like Opol, it does not intend to do one project alone, but more. Described as a “quantum leap,” the project signing on Friday will lead to the use of state-of-the-art technology called “Membrane Technology” from the Netherlands. Construction of the project will run for two years and will prioritize residents of the beneficiary-community for employment. Once realized, the estimated P500-million bulk water supply project will be the first such undertaking

by A Brown Company, Inc., which has diversified itself from footwear manufacturing to real estate and palm oil processing. The bulk water supply is expected to be around 25 kilometers long, traversing from barangay Tingalan to serve the residents of barangay Poblacion, which current source of water is almost nil. Mayor Seno and Vice Mayor Chizarina Ortigoza set aside political differences and together welcomed A Brown Company, Inc. Chairman Walter Brown and his party during the ceremony. “Nihit ang tubig sa Opol labi na sa barangay Poblacion. M’o nang dako kaayo ang ako pasalamat sa A Brown nga nahuna-hunaan nila ni nga proyekto,” Or-

must be highly regarded and properly addressed”, relates Mr. John Venice Ladaga, assistant department head of the City Mayor’s Office. “While other local government units (LGU) have ceased from enrollment to PHIC, the regime of this Red Cross chair-turned-mayor has been maintaining its allocation for the needy and qualified since her first mayoral year,” Mr. Ladaga added. Guingona renews Philhealth insurance of 3,000 beneficiaries

GINGOOG City--“In continually enfleshing her executive agenda on health among masses, Mayor Marie Guingona has finalized her renewal on Philhealth insurance to 3,000 beneficiaries for 2015”, according to City Health Officer Dr. Grace Javier Jadol. “This administration has been embarking to the universal program on health as implemented by the Department of Health (DOH). Our LGU has been adhering to the popular program

known as “Kalusugang Pangkalahatan” in which every simple Gingoognon family has to be given a priority for this right. Providing health insurance to our less fortunate constituents is not a privilege, but rather their fundamental right in which this city government is very much willing to find ways and means for their welfare on health and sanitation aspects”, expresses the city’s highest leader. “We really appreciate the Guingona administration for

rangay Tingalan are so vast that Seno is contemplating to put up a mini-water park there in the future. Mayor Seno and Vice Mayor Ortigosa led the signing for Opol with Dr. Brown and Mr. Castro for A Brown. Opol, which has been a municipality for 64 years without its own water supply, has lately grown into a major business hub and seafood center in the province with more investors coming in for tourism and other projects, as well. Under the MOU the company will shoulder the cost of the project. Seno said the municipality’s equity in the MOU is the water source. “This is a dream come true for Opol,” Seno said. “This (water) project will attract more investors,” the mayor added. He said close to 200 new investments are coming, including development of resorts along the beach area. With these developments, Mayor Seno is expected to call for series of planning sessions to tune up the master plan of Opol municipality.

He said the water reserves at barangay Tingalan, which will be tapped by the firm are so vast that they could even supply as far as El Salvador City and airport-laden Laguindingan. Meanwhile, A Brown Group of Companies Executive Vice President Roel Castro said that the treatment facility that they will install is akin to water treatment by a mineral water bottling plants since it will use membrane technology, minimizing the use of chemicals in the process. Dr. Brown, for his part said that he is grateful to the municipal government of Opol for hosting his second business venture in the municipality. The 600-hectare palm oil plantation and processing plant of A Brown Company, Inc. is also located in Opol town. It was also learned that the water reserves in ba-

Two other soldiers survived, but were wounded in the fighting that ensued in Sumisip, a known stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf. The soldiers were part a team of eight sent by Lt. Col. while trying to maneuver. Two soldiers survived the fierce fighting, but they are wounded as well,” the source told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner. The officer said the investigation does not stop there because probers are now looking into why Corpuz was sent to Sumisip to clear an area with only a squad of 7 soldiers instead of at least a section comprising 14 soldiers. Corpuz’s group was one of three deployed one kilometer apart from each other in Sumisip that prevented soldiers from reinforcing the embattled squad. tled soldiers only a small group of Muslim pro-government militias manning a detachment from afar aided the group of Corpuz by sniping Abu Sayyaf fighters. But the same group may have known about the presence of the militants in the village of Libug because they refused to join Corpuz’s team in securing the area and gave various alibis. “That is also being investigated now. They may have intelligence information about the Abu Sayyaf, but did not share this to Lt. Corpuz and opted to stay in the detachment,” the officer said. The deadly attack on Corpuz also exposed the vulnerability of the 64th Infantry Battalion – it lack soldiers to effectively carry out its mission in Basilan. The battalion, which originally headquartered in Maguindanao province, has only about 380 soldiers instead of 525 troops, and many of its members had deserted or gone on leave without permission after learning they would be deployed to Basilan. It was unknown whether Recaido would be relieved by Catapang as battalion commander following the death of Corpuz and his soldiers. Security officials said Corpuz’s team was patrolling the village when they engaged about 20 militants sparking a fierce gun battle that lasted almost 45 minutes. They said the Abu Sayyaf attack was meant to derail the completion of the 135-kilometer Basilan Circumferential Road project launched by the Department of Public Works and Highways during the time of President Fidel Ramos in the 1990s, but works continue up to now. The military also helped construct the road project which was financed through a concessional facility extended by Saudi Arabia. The loan of 75 million Saudi riyals was extended on October 2005 - to revive the project after being stalled for many years - while the Filipino government provided a counterpart fund of 1.118 billion pesos. The circumferential road project is seen as a major infrastructure initiative to lift Basilan from poverty and bring prosperity in the province as part of the government’s campaign against local terrorism and lawlessness in the area. ground of viable projects that the people can enjoy and make use of their taxpayers money? Recalling the first BIMP- EAGA conference held in Davao City, some 20 years ago year 1994, some keen observers like the AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, INC. and AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, INC in region XI, commented that said conferences are a dismal failure. Their observations are anchored, that there is a commonality of agricultural products in the above mentioned countries. When Presidential Assistant for Mindanao Affairs, PAUL DOMINGUEZ was MDA Chairman, a seminar forum of then Samal Island (now Igacos City) on some non-funded projects for Mindanao were reportedly undertaken When this writer inquired about the projects to have media mileage, Mr. Dominguez said there are no such funds for media including the seminar projects. When asked why he still conduct such seminar forum, he remained silent. We from the media, especially this writer for the past 4 decades are tired of hearing propaganda coming from government agencies both local and national levels, of speakers telling the public of beautiful government projects, but having no funds or if there were funds, they were diverted to non-tangible projects like seminars and conferences which were without value. Public officials, please support President Pinoy’s reformation policies of transparency and accountability, to the people who paid your big salaries and allowances, so that GOD will not curse your family for stealing taxpayers’ money. GOD BLESS THE PHILIPPINES.

‘hard core’ supporters of the NPA. “There were several government programs in the past that could hardly reach the area because the communist guerillas were blocking them. They even held hostage a barangay official at the neighboring village of Sabud in September last year after the NPA attacked a military detachment in the area. The rebels were demanding to hand over the newly-trained CAFGUs but we stood by our ground and denied them. After all, we are the duly-constituted authorities,” Mayor Otaza said. CENR Officer Precilio O. Penaloga said Loreto has a total land area of 141,552 hectares of which 80 percent are classified as forest lands or 102,448 hectares. “Loreto has a vast potential area for tree farm considering the production forest area which sums up to 88, 188 hectares. Most of these areas were developed into tree farms by eight People’s Organization,“ he said. Agusan del Sur PENRO Roberto Oliveros said there are 5,853.25 hectares of timber lands that have been developed in Loreto under the NGP since 2011. About 2,254 hectares of these NGP sites are being maintained by the Peoples Organization (PO) through the Social Mobilization program in Loreto and Veruela. “Today, after a year of struggle, peace has finally reigned in Loreto. More people are coming out to join the tree planting program under NGP. The farmers in Barangay Kauswagan are now looking forward to a bounty harvest from the rubber tree seedlings which they preferred to plant alongside with the falcata trees. Both trees could earn them several millions of pesos at the time of harvest four years from now,“ from page A1 Tamayo said. The Council is composed of private sector individuals who are committed to actively participate in ensuring the success of the DAs programs and activities. “Through the partnership with the private sector, the DA is able to keep in line with the governments thrust for transparency, accountability and good governance. AFC continuously empower the farmers to be more effective and efficient producers for they are the greatest contributors in the development of the agrifishery sector in private-public participatory mechanism” said Constancio C. After this, CAAP and the airlines will organize flight schedules to ensure orderly operations and to prevent air traffic and terminal congestion. This will kick start night landing operations at the airport. Sec. Abaya said night flights mean more flights and more options for passengers, and as the gateway to Northern Mindanao, this development will spur greater economic activity to the bustling business and tourist destinations in Cagayan de Oro, Bukidnon, Iligan, and neighboring areas. The more modern Laguindingan Airport was opened in June 2013 as a replacement to the older Lumbia Airport in Cagayan de Oro. While determined by experts to be safer than Lumbia, Laguindingan has not been able to meet its projected passenger capacity while operating during daytime only. Laguindingan was supposed to be completed in 2006 but it was only last year that the airport was put into full daytime operations. (PIA/ CO)

School Turns Toilet into Canteen

By Mrs. Norma R. Lawan Master Teacher I La Trinidad Elementary School Bonbon, Butuan City

Several years ago, several buildings including a toilet of La Trinidad Elementary School were condemned due to their dilapidated condition. These structures were left abandoned as school authorities did not find time to allot money for their rehabilitation. The new school administrator decided to have the building on which the toilet stood renovated to convert it into a canteen. He hired two carpenters from his own money and completed the project in two weeks. Since the old toilet facil-

Guests were treated to sumptuous afternoon meryenda-meal and a live band. The infinity pool was inviting and so with the gazebo. There are also the parks and playground, meditation garden, and the viewdeck completes the setting. A hanging bridge is also built leading to the half-akilometer stretch of beachfront. Next to be built are the floating jetty, putting green, aquasports area and pool by the sea. To complement nature and the environment, home

ity was a project of students’ parents, the new canteen also became the hangout of parents who sold affordable food items. The teachers were glad schoolchildren could now buy snacks from within the school premises and return to classes early. Before, teachers could not immediately resume classes after recess time since schoolchildren bought snacks from stores too far from school. This was the reason why some of them failed to return or missed classes. The school’s share from the canteen’s proceeds is to be used for another project which is being worked out. The old principal’s building was not functional for several years until it was also

renovated. The structure still serves the same purpose: to keep school records. Other materials are also available to answer for the needs and queries of parents, learners and teachers. According to stakeholders, the school has now become a pleasant environment where changes have taken place owing to the leadership’s initiative aimed at the benefit of the school. The parents has come to look up to the institution as an ideal place where their children can learn so much in terms of nurturing and developing their imagination, creativeness and good leadership. WHY HOMEROOM PTA are ORGANIZED? By MA. JEAN V. JUMAWAN Tambo Central School Tambo, Hinaplanon, Iligan City

The homeroom PTA is designed to strengthen the relationship between the schools and the parents. It is any of several local organizations composed of parents and public school teachers, seeking mutual cooperation in the guidance of school children. The parents make up the school, teachers, and pupils the so called ParentsTeachers Association. Each one is highly dependent, one with the other. A strong PTA is necessary in order to achieve a meaningful rapport between the parents and teacher. Through this organization there is recognition of the importance of the parents to the school and vice versa. The school cannot exist without the par-

ents neither in the absence of the pupils. Therefore, these three attributes contribute to the success of any PTA undertaking. Through this joint endeavor recognizing both as responsibility and privilege between the teacher and parents possible through tangible projects for the classroom are being facilitated, thus enhancing not only building a wholesome and good relationship but also making homeroom very conductive to learning. However there are few factors to consider in deciding on the project/s to be undertaken by the association. Take into consideration the following vital questions: 1.) Is it primary and foremost need of the Association and the recipients are the parents, teachers, and pupils?

2.) Is it within the capacity of the members to pay? In other words, is it affordable? 3.) Will, it be a lasting project that could endure the test of time? The homeroom PTA then present the proposed project to the school principal for reaction and approval. If the school principal approves the said project, the teacher adviser, the HRPTA president and treasurer, consummates a contract to pursue the project. However, bear in mind that the essence of any undertaking be it in the school environment or to the whole society where one lives; all great achievements come from working and waiting. Because success is 10% mechanic and 90% attitude. One’s attitude is highly determined by his attitude.

Education in the Philippines: In improving its access and delivery By Cherry Obsioma-Neri Teacher I Migpait Elementary School Talakag II District

The current administration here in the Philippines is giving much more importance to Education. The reason behind is that they want to use this as a tool to improve each of its human resources. In the aim to also provide better education, a lot of changes and improvements in Education sector has been made. Moreover, several programs are strategized to improve the curriculum, content, delivery and reach, among others. Adopt-a-School program is one. This program allows private entities to assist

a public schools in terms of, but not limited to, staff and faculty development for training and further education, construction of facilities, upgrading of existing facilities, provision of books, publications and other instructional materials and modernization of instructional technologies. The program can assist public schools in any levels, whether it is an elementary, secondary or tertiary school. These beneficiary schools are located in any of 20 poorest provinces identified by Presidential Council for Countryside Development or any other government agency tasked in identifying such kind of provinces.

Over the years, the program has been realized through the collaboration of DepEd and private entities. There are interventions that reduced student dropouts and kept the youth off the streets. The program also increased student achievement levels and improved teacher performance. It is true that numerous problems envelopes the education system in the Philippines. However, fact cannot be denied that there are also several programs implemented to further address and fight these problems. Education is a priority, all involved parties should just have to be participative to continue the fight for education.

SECOND CHANCE http://www.chinkeetan.com/

TAN by CHINKEE

“Chinkee, I made a major mistake in the past, I am having a hard time forgiving myself, what should I do?” If you are longing for peace for the longest time. Narito ang ilang mga hakbang na maaari mong gawin patungo sa proseso ng pagpapatawad sa sarili: ASK FOR FORGIVENESS FROM THE PEOPLE YOU HURT Humingi ng tawad sa mga taong nasaktan natin. “Eh, paano na kung hindi tanggapin?” Kung hindi man tanggapin, wala kang magagawa. You cannot make people accept your apology base on your terms but theirs. At kung hindi pa silang handa, please give them time. ASK FORGIVENESS FROM

GOD You can never give what you do not receive. How can you give forgiveness, if you have not received forgiveness yourself. You must settle the score with God. You must humble yourself and come to God with all honesty and humility, how you messed up your life and you need help that only God can offer. Kailangan mo lang magpakatotoo na hindi mo kakayanin na harapin ang pagsubok na ito na walang tulong ng Panginoon. Only God can give you a fresh start. If you can find the grace to forgive others, how come you cannot forgive yourself. Come on think about it, kung ang Diyos nga napatawad ka nga, sino ka ba na pwedeng magmalaki at hindi mo kayang patawarin ang iyong sarili. That is the reason why there is a saying, “It maybe impossible to man but it is possible to God.” Kapatid, panahon na patawarin mo ang iyong sarili. It is time to move on! You have wasted so much time living in pain, torment, confusion, guilt and shame. Now it is time for you to set yourself FREE! THINK. REFLECT. APPLY. Are your ready to move on? Are you ready to make amends with others? Are you ready to ask God for forgiveness? Are you ready to forgive yourself?

Ecoville mothers at the frontline

“We will use the MONEY to provide more skills trainings, production equipment and financial literacy trainings for the sewing enterprise of Xavier Ecoville. These will hopefully enhance the quality of the bags,” Guantero answered when asked about their plans on the grant. SKETCH aims to provide livelihood opportunities for the families affected by Typhoon Sendong in December 2011. They tapped a group of 30 mothers from the XE community for the production of the recyclable bags. These women have been paid for each bag that they produce. Thus,

more bags would mean more income for them. “We chose to help Xavier Ecoville community because, like the Ecoville residents, two of our group mates are also Sendong survivors. The Xavier Ecoville community is also close to our hearts,” said Anne Sebastian, the partner of Guantero in the camp. XE is a resettlement community for the Tropical Storm Sendong survivors located at Barangay Lumbia, located 60 kilometers away from the city proper. “We wanted to help the society and the community,” Guantero added. They also admitted that they drew their inspiration from Arsenio Sebastian, Ann’s grandfather who takes his active involvement as the livelihood development consultant of the Xavier Ecoville Project.

The Changemaker camp was initiated by the British Council, an international organization for educational opportunities and cultural relation, in partnership with the Peace and Equity Foundation (PEF), a staunch supporter of social entrepreneurship. SKETCH bags started as a feasibility study requirement for their course. The bags were made from katsa cloth. They were then chosen by School of Business and Management to represent XU in the camp. Currently, SKETCH bags has already produced and marketed a total of 47O bags. They are targeting to sell 900 bags by the end of this year. They will be distrib-

uting the bags to various organizations and companies. They are hoping that through their efforts the sewing enterprise will be sustained and there will be a bigger market for the bags. The other members of the SKETCH bags feasibility study group who were not able to join the camp due to the limited number of participants were Raymond Sabio, Lichelle Salgados, Ted Povadora, Ian Son and Mark Amper. Other social enterprises from XU were Knots and Woods, another FS group who produced shoes made out of abaca fiber, and ROOFosition of the XEP which was aimed at developing a technology for urban gardening and maximizing the spaces on the roofs. Building the longest music playlist WHEN local music stations tend to level down with the masses and lose their dignity by rotating baduy and old tracks, you don’t have any other recourse but to build your own music playlist. Over the years, technology has gone up rapidly allowing people to have their own music playlist beyond their iPod or phone platforms. My very first downloads started in 2006. It was the time when my good chum Jigger Jerusalem’s column The Beat was at its peak. I was one of the avid followers of his indie music reviews. It was also the time when

LAUNCHcast was the most favored online radio, replacing annoying FM stations which churn out lewd dramatized segments and other trash talk in between commercials and bubblegum pop. But LAUNCHCcast’s custom stations needed to be refreshed and updated every now and then that I decided to download mp3 files to my hard drive in my personal computer at home. From a humble collection of more than a dozen songs (Danko’s First Date, Shawn Colvin’s When You Know, Natalie’s Where Are You, etc.), my playlist now totals 31.9GB

of 6,599 tracks and counting in one single folder! I may well be qualified to hold a Guinness for the longest audio playlist set in a personal computer! How have I reached that mind-numbing number? Each week, singles are released both here and in the United States and I try to download all of them. So how do I track the latest released singles? I go to the countdown page of Magic 89.3’s website, then on to the website of Myx to Billboard and lastly to BBC Music. How do I download songs? I simply search the song on YouTube, copy the URL

of the link and paste it on a YouTube mp3 converter and voila! I got the download! I may not know how to dance or sing, I may not know how to play the piano or guitar, heck I may not know how to read a note but I love music. Every time I’m online at home, the music player is always on shuffle. So you’ll have an idea how diverse my musical tastes are, here’s a rundown of my music tracks at random: 1. Upuan – Gloc-9 2. AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18) - Your creative side is fully engaged today -- even if it’s felt like it’s been dormant for years. If you take care, though, you can sidestep them and have fun doing it!

life. In Corinthian 15:35-56- this is the details of the resurrection of the dead and we must hope for this “gift” of life. The “souls in heaven will come down here on earth at the end and unite again with the dust, and this will become a “glorified body.” In John11:3844-Lazaro “rose from the dead” because of the “power of Jesus.” Printing paid by: Neneth - Bobong Balino- Dr. Edith, PhD- Tony Jordan - CDO. VIRGO (August 23 – September 22) - A minor work problem could spiral out of control into something much bigger and hairier -- so try your best to keep it managed. Get help if you think you need it. Life can get easier. LIBRA (September 23 – October 22) - You’ve got to find someone new who can really understand where you’re coming from. Your energy is terrific, and it could very well be that this turns into a romantic fling -- eventually. SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21) - You shouldn’t rely exclusively on instinct today -- try instead to check over every line item in that budget or bit of fine print in that contract. Get a pro to look it over, if need be!

CANCER (June 22 – July 22) - Everyone else seems to be socializing -- you’d better get on that yourself! It’s a really good time for you to try new things and to make sure that you’ve got what it takes to get ahead. LEO (July 23 – August 22) - Don’t try to go it alone today -- you need to be part of a group, and that’s easier when you’re open-minded. Flexibility is the key to your success right now, though that’s easier said than done.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21) - Your dealings with other people could cause some serious problems today -- so see if you can check yourself beforehand. The good news is that you may be able to shake things up in a good way! CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19) - If you start to get bored today despite being surrounded by people, it could be that you just haven’t run into the right one yet. Keep looking until you spot the one person who seems to be as quiet as you are.

Story and Photos by MARK FRANCISCO Assistant Lifestyle Editor

OC-Phinma alumnus Ernest Vincent Rasonable, 21, ranked seventh in the Certified Plant Mechanic Licensure Examination given by the Board of Mechanical Engineering last October 7 to 8. Garnering a score of 92.60, Rasonable soared high among 2,959 other examinees in the country and for that,he was awarded P30,000 by his alma mater in gratitude to his sterling performance in the exam. The rite was held recently at Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive School (Mogchs), which was also his high school mater. During the ceremony held at the school’s covered court, the hundreds of senior students from Mogchs applauded as their beloved

alumnus walked to the stage to receive the award from Engr. Jocel Dimcauta, the dean of the College of Engineering. In his thanksgiving speech, Rasonable said that sheer discipline during the four months of review in Cebu City was the key on why he soared high in the exam. “In a big city like Cebu, wala ko nagpatintal og lulinghayaw. Gani, kas-a ra ko nakasuroy sa mga mall, kato rang first day of review. The rest of the days I dedicated praying, studying, eating and sleeping,” Rasonable said. Rasonable then went on exhorted the Mogchs seniors to follow their heart in choosing the college program they’ll enroll in instead of caving in to the dictates of others “because

if you follow your passion, then you will excel at it.” “Also choose a college that has a track record in churning out topnotchers, a college such as COC-Phinma,” he added to the applause of the crowd, which is also composed of Rasonable’s mentors both during his secondary and tertiary years. Mogchs and COC-Phinma engineering mentors stood side by side and almost tearyeyed as their beloved student talked through his speech. Meanwhile, students in the crowd in hushed whispers encouraged each other to take the entrance exam at COCPhinma when the time comes. No one was happier than Mogchs 4th Year Level chairman Dr. Helen Maasin. “The fruits of our labor here in Mogchs has ripened. Engr. Ernest is living proof that Mogchs indeed produces some of the best citizens in CDO. And what Mogchs has produced, COC-Phinma has sharpened even more,” Maasin said. In her speech, Dimacuta returned the compliment by saying that “Mogchs has already provided you the necessary foundation to make it to college.” This remark catapulted the Mogchs to give their wildest cheers even more. The son of a beer dealer and a real estate agent, Rason-

able was a presidential scholar at COC-Phinma and graduated cum laude last March. His younger sister takes

inspiration from him and is now enrolled at COCPhinma. The other board passers from COC-Phinma were

Engrs. Mavrick Beduya, Ven Leo Brillo, John Cortel, Butch Ebare, Kenneth Orven Estor and Rogimel Salvana.
