There’s a lot to be proud of in Sarpy County.

And the inaugural Sarpy County People’s Choice Awards gave residents a chance for their voices to finally be heard.

There are plenty of quality businesses in the county, and this event gave them a chance to shine.

said Paul Swanson, project coordinator for Suburban Newspapers.

The idea that had been floating out there was finally ready to become a reality.

With a lot of hard work and determination on the part of the Suburban Newspaper Group advertising team, the People’s Choice Awards were born.

Response from the area was phenomenal.

“We had a tremendous response from our readers,” said Scott Barry, an account executive with the Omaha World-Herald.

More than 17,000 votes were cast during the balloting period, which ran from Sept. 3 to Oct. 2.

One big positive that came out of the awards program is the awareness it created for the businesses and services available in the county.

“We are very grateful to our readers for voting and making these awards a great success,” Barry said.

The top three vote-getters in each of the 230 categories are listed in this 40-page special section.

Each sub-category winner will receive a customized window cling to display.

Congratulations to all who our readers chose as being among the best of Sarpy County.

Besides the Sarpy County People’s Choice Awards, two of the biggest events sponsored by the newspaper group each year are Worthy Women of Distinction Breast Cancer Fighters and Survivors and the Sarpy County Business Hall of Fame.

Worthy Women recognizes women from throughout Sarpy County who have been nominated for their perseverance in their fight against breast cancer.

Each fall, several women are nominated for acknowledgement at an October ceremony.
