Ripped/Stonewash denim The ripped/stonewash denim trend is one that took some getting used to like high shine leggings before them when the look first hit our radar we swore we’d never succumb to it. It reminded us of the early 90s a time when grunge was the reigning style statement. But a matter of months down the line we’re eating our words. It may have a little something to do with the fact that the likes of Erin Wasson and Lily Donaldson have shown us where there’s a will there’s definitely a way to work it!

Is Lady Gaga the style icon of 2009 or just a walking disaster. The Glossy’s editor Tallulah Doherty gives her take on the pop starlet that’s got everyone talking. Am I the only one not going crazy over Lady Gaga’s style? She’s burst onto the scene like some sort of fashion disaster we were all hoping would never happen. It’s like she’s taken the best bits of every great performer she could think of - the Christina Aguilera peroxide hair, Madonna circa Vogue headgear - and mixed them up into a monstrous pastiche and now expects us to be wowed. Well I for one am completely underwhelmed. I love innovative performers who are not afraid to express their art through their personal style so Rihanna’s good girl gone bad short crop teamed with a parade of hot outfits so ticks all the right boxes. And I know Lady Gaga is trying to offer us something subversive away from the never ending array of pop starlets in Herve Leger dresses and Louboutin stilettos so yes I appreciate the effort. Juley@Swank Heights: What inspired you to create your blog? I initially created my blog to comment on other people’s blogs, but began to update frequently last December. Since then, the traffic has grown immensely so I’ve been posting daily outfits, inspiration, and food porn to keep my readers interested. Who’s your favourite designer and why? I love the timelessness of Lanvin. Season after season, its designs encompass everything I want my lifestyle to be like: successful, elegant, and memorable. Who’s your favourite model and why ? I’m not great In remembering models names, but I really love the look of Chanel Iman! She has great street style as well.
What are your favourite fashion magazines/blogs and why? I’ve always loved UK magazines more than ones published here. Right now I’m really obsessed with Muse Magazine for their great styling and layout design. My favorite fashion blogs would have to be Style Bubble, Just JR, Sea of Shoes, CitizenCouture, and of course Fashion Toast. Who’s your style icon? Carine Roitfield What does a day in your life consist of? Nothing glamorous for now! A great day for me is eating great food from my favorite cafes like Il Posto, La Boulangerie, or St. James Cheese and being outside by the pool or playing tennis.
What does fashion mean to you? I don’t take fashion too seriously. I love to put together looks and dress up to feel good. What would be your dream job? Fashion consulting would be a dream. Realistically I’m pursuing management consulting. What trend are you loving at the moment? I love, love the tapered trousers trend. What inspired you to create your blog? I am sort of an impulsive person, so the thought of creating a “styledriven” blog wasn’t some highly premeditated decision. However, I did brainstorm a bit on what exactly I’d want to feature on my blog, and I decided that it would be fashion forward with a twist. I was inspired by many things - different photography blogs, other fashion blogs, and just the desire to want to gather all the things I love (music, fashion, vintage photographs, home décor, famous quotes,etc) and create this online canvas, where I could admire all of my internet finds collectively, and that’s pretty much how Fashionista at Play came about. I never thought that people would receive the blog the way they have. It was merely just something I wanted to do in my free time - just for me, not expecting a certain response from anyone. Who’s your favourite designer and why? Max Azria is one of my favorite designers. I love the simplicity of his pieces. Very classic as well. I also love the fact the price tag isn’t TOO over the top expensive. Who’s your favourite model and why ? It’s hard to choose just one model, because there are so many greats that I adore, but if I HAD to pick just one, it would be Naomi Campbell. She’s so exquisite on the runway. Her longevity speaks volumes. She’s an icon, and she’s fearless.

Who’s your style icon? Can I name three (lol)? Rihanna, Lauren “LC” Conrad, and Tracee Ellis Ross are at the top of my style list right now. Rihanna never disappoints - she can switch it up from tomboy chic to Red carpet fab, without missing a beat. Tracee’s style is very unconventional which is why I love it so much. I always watched her sitcom just to see what she was wearing. Plus she has a killer body, so everything looks great on her. I adore Lauren’s chic casual looks, as well as her night on the town pieces. She always looks amazing and flawless, whether she’s wearing skinny jeans, a pair of flats, and a white tee, or a cute bubble dress with a pair of sexy heels and a fabulous clutch.
What does a day in your life consist of? I’m a pretty laid back kinda girl. When I’m not at work (I work full time as a General Accountant at a resort), I’m somewhere stuffing my face, or I’m at home lounging around, surfing the net, watching Sex and The City dvds and other chick flicks, listening to music with a glass of wine near by, or brainstorming what I can buy for my new apartment. I love decorating and re-arranging my living space.

What does fashion mean to you? Fashion is attitude. Fashion is a way of life. In some way, shape or form, everything revolves around beauty and fashion. I believe in first impressions, so I think it’s always important to put your best “fashion” foot forward. Your outer packaging is the first thing people notice. What would be your dream job? My dream job would definitely be something in the fashion industry - a fashion editor for a magazine, a fashion consultant, even a personal stylist. What trend are you loving at the moment? I’m loving ballet flats. I honestly don’t own a lot of flats, but that’s gonna change. I think they’re comfy, yet fab at the same time, when paired with a super cute outfit. For those days when you don’t feel like breaking out the 4” heels, they’re a must.
What’s your style staple? A nice pair of skinny jeans and a fierce clutch purse. I love clutches. I honestly don’t enough. I need to work on that. Are you a designer or high street girl? A little bit of both. I don’t mind spending money on certain designer duds if I love the cut and quality, but for the most part, I’m a bargain shopper. What inspired you to start collecting and selling vintage clothing? One of my favorite pieces is what started my serious interest in vintage. I had purchased a Gaultier dress that I found at a thrift shop for $40 hoping to wear it for a Halloween party. At the last minute I changed my mind hung it in my closet and forgot about it. Months later I sold it at auction for the equivalent of $1,000! Professionally I’m selling a lot of Mugler and Gaultier and am now looking more and more for Japanese designers such as Comme des Garcons and Yamamoto. Some of my pieces will be coming up on auction via Kerry Taylor Auctions in London www.kerrytaylorauctions.com on June 17. I have about 30 pieces of mine and my clients in this auction so it is quite exciting! I also like the challenge of finding new venues and putting together collections. I’ll be launching my first vintage collection titled “Revival” for Le66 a concept store on the Champs Elysees tomorrow evening. The collection is of pieces by Chanel, Leger, Balmain and Lanvin so I’m very excited to see how it works out.

Who’s your favourite designer and why? Azzedine Alaia for his immense talent and extremely flattering cuts. I’ve never met him personally but have heard from countless people worldwide that he is a wonderful person as well as a very talented designer. I have the greatest respect for him since so many people speak so highly of him. Who’s your favourite model and why? Since I buy and sell a lot of the 80s I tend to like supermodels of the 80s; Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlington, Iman, etc. It is nice to see some of them continuing to model and lending their names to various events and charitable organizations worldwide.
Who’s your style icon? Sarah Jessica Parker with or without the styling of Patricia Field always looks fabulous. What does a day in your life consist of? Every day is so different; I may be digging through closets of clients, photographing items for a new collection, doing research at the library on a piece that I’ve found, sending items for auction valuations, going to an auction or meeting with vintage dealers. Everyday is a mixed bag of treasure hunting, public relations, buying and selling and of course always trying to learn something new!

What would be your dream job? I think that I have it now! What trend are you loving at the moment? I love the continuation of the 80s, leggings which work with everything and for so many body types and of course mixing modern and vintage. What’s your style staple? My Alaia leggings that I wear constantly, comfortable jeans that look great (my newest pair is from H&M) with lace up sides very punk rock and black, black and more black... Who’s your favourite designer and why? Can I choose alive and dead? Right now I love Alexander McQueen. His clothes make me gasp because they can be so out-of-this-world. His creations can be so bizarre but beautiful. He always makes intelligent collections and you can tell there are lots of ideas behind the clothes. And they are just so sumptuous and extravagant but completely unlike other designers. One of my fashion heroes is Coco Chanel. She completely changed the way women dressed and liberated them from corsets. She was a true pioneer and I just find her so inspirational as a woman and a designer.

What inspired you to create your blog? I was actually at an old job sitting at my desk doing nothing and being bored and I thought ‘why aren’t I doing something that I’m actually interested in?’ So I just got onto Blogger and started it. I wanted to write a fashion blog because fashion inspires me; it’s exciting and fun; and I’m just really interested in the way the industry works and how it affects people. Plus I just love to look at beautiful clothes and photographs too.

What are your favourite fashion magazines/blogs and why? I read so many fashion magazines and blogs that it gets overwhelming at times! But my top favourite magazines right now are Paris Vogue, FASHION and Numéro. I’m really into European magazines because they have more fun than their American counterparts. Paris Vogue has so much fun with fashion; they’re not as restricted as American Vogue and their editorials are to die for. I like any fashion magazine that makes me want to rip out the photos and put them up on my wall. As for fashion blogs, well there are so many amazing ones out there and every day I keep discovering new ones. I actually read more blogs than I do magazines because they are often ahead of the curve as far as trends go and since their only editor is themselves their opinions aren’t censored. I like blogs such as Fashion Toast and Karla’s Closet because their styling is so unusual and different from what you see in magazines. They are free to be really creative and try new things and I get a lot of ideas for what I wear from them rather than magazines. A lot of the blogs are also really insightful about the fashion industry and can criticize as well as champion the industry’s values. And there is some great photography in these blogs as well. They just really inspire me. Who’s your style icon? Miroslava Mikheeva-Duma (fashion editor at Harpers Bazaar Russia.) Miroslava is always taking chances with her clothes. Once she wore a really large sweater with red stockings to New York Fashion Week. And it’s completely unexpected. One day she will be really
glamorous in a fitted black dress and the next day she will wear jean cut-offs with a tweed jacket and a loose shirt. She always wears clothes that you think would never go well together but she makes it work. You can tell she loves clothes and has fun mixing and matching. What does a day in your life consist of? My day job is an online editor at Yahoo! Canada so I’m usually at a desk for most of the day. Sometimes I take small breaks to check out fashion sites and work on the blog. My evenings consist of working out at the gym, more blogging, reading and watching my favourite TV shows. When I’m not working I’ll either be hanging out with friends or family. Of course I like to shop so I do occasionally go hunting for clothes. I’m also a freelance fashion writer and I’ve written for a couple publications such as Naked Eye magazine.
What trend are you loving at the moment? I am loving the shoulder revival. I have a thing for big, exaggerated shoulders. I’ve been buying a lot of vintage 80s blazers and they have the big shoulder pads and I love them. They make a woman look strong and in control. What’s your style staple? Blazers. Even before Gossip Girl started that whole prep school look I’ve been obsessed with blazers that have crests on them. I usually like long and loose ones because they look good with dresses but I also like to wear fitted ones with jeans and a cool t-shirt. And I always get comments and people ask me if I go to a private girls school which I think is funny. Also graphic t-shirts. I’m obsessed with comic books so any shirt with a comicbook character like Batman, Superman, Catwoman, Watchmen…I will buy.
What does fashion mean to you? For me it’s very personal. I first got into fashion because of an American Vogue editorial of Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette. I thought the photographs were so beautiful and inspiring and that’s how I really came to love fashion. So for me, fashion is about beauty and passion and about inspiring people; whether it’s by making yourself feel good wearing amazing clothes or being inspired by a beautiful photograph or a collection.
Are you a designer or high street girl? Well since I can’t really afford designer and I am definitely a high street girl! But I do like my designer bags. I’m a huge bag snob because I only buy designer bags. But as far as clothes go I like to shop at H&M, Winners, Zara, Jacob and Banana Republic. I also love vintage stores like Vintage 69 in Toronto; they have amazing leather jackets. I’ve actually been buying a lot of clothes from online vintage stores on Ebay. Who’s your favourite designer and why? This is a difficult one. There are designers who I admire for various reasons such as Diane von Furstenberg for creating the wrap dress, Marc Jacobs for his pioneering style, Donna Karan for her business sense, Prada; I love them all. However I do not have a favourite designer as such. Who’s your favourite model and why ? I have always like Cindy Crawford for her enterprising abilities and she has aged gracefully. What inspired you to create your blog? I have always loved writing, I actually used to have a print magazine and an online mag back in the day but due to cost and time I had to fold it. I came across blogs back in 2006 and saw them as a diary and I fancied the idea of having one but was not sure if I could sustain it. The last thing I wanted was to set one up and then leave it abandoned but on 1st January 2007 I decided to take the plunge. I started off on Yahoo 360 which was a really basic blogging platform but the community was great. I set myself a target of writing at least once a week and it went from there. The blog on Yahoo 360 was a lot different from the one on Blogger as it was more personal but I wanted to move from that and create more of a magazine like blog, also there were technical issues on Yahoo which frustrated me. So I began looking around and decided to go with Blogger and their format allowed to create a blog that is more visually appealing and also where I can write about things that inspire me like films, books, magazines, music, TV and art. Who’s your style icon? I think celebs such as Kylie Minogue, Jennifer Anniston and Jennifer Lopez dress really well but I really admire Rachel Zoe who sets trends. I also have a lot of time for Audrey Hepburn, Jackie O and Michelle Obama. Kate Moss and Sienna Miller have incredible style and are wonderful to look at.
What does a day in your life consist of? Well I work as a Marketer for an arts University so my day is spent doing that; organising events, working on marketing brochures, updating the website, writing copy and lots of meetings. In the evening I am either out socialising, blogging, reading other blogs, devouring magazines or online.

What does fashion mean to you Fashion to me refers to the sort of trends that are in vogue at the moment and that is set by the magazines who get direction from the fashion shows. To me fashion is about adapting the best bits that suit you and having fun with it but not feeling the pressure to go out and buy into every trend.
What trend are you loving at the moment? I really like the 80s styles that are coming back in, they make me feel very nostalgic as I grew up during that period. I am not living the shoulder pad though.
What would be your dream job? Right now I have my dream job but in the future I would not rule out working as an editor for a magazine (hint hint) or working as a branding manager.
Are you a designer or high street girl? High street all the way.

Chronicles To Snip or Not to Snip That Is The Question So here’s the thing I’ve never been a fan of short hair to me it’s always translated as practical, neat, and easy to manage - in other words BO-RING. In fact I’ve gone out of my way to avoid the smart and sensible look when it comes to my folicles. My hair icons are Gisele, Naomi Campbell, and Bollywood actresses so you get the picture. But then I noticed a trend for trimming in the land of celebs and even I can’t deny that it has done wonders for Rhianna, Katie Holmes, and Gwyneth Paltrow who all look amazing. It’s like they’ve made that transformation from dull to dramatic and instantly chic with one snip. Ok so it does help that they’re not exactly Quazimodos but I think the look could work for most depending on hair length and cut. I don’t think I’ll ever be brave enough to do a Rhianna - that’s a bit extreme. But maybe a shoulder length bob. So am I a convert? Well I was almost there. That is until I saw a picture of Eva Longoria with what can only be described as a wannabe yummy mummy crop. I’m a big fan of the Wisteria Lane diva but I’ve got to be honest. She looked frumpy. So it’s one of those things that I think need tackling with caution. It can either go amazingly well and you’ll look radiant stunning and stylish or it’ll age you. Think Sienna Miller when she cut her hair - she went from boho babe to just looking a bit of a scruff. It’s all in the hair. I think it’s the same as with red lipstick. Some women can pull it off to Dita Von Tees perfection while other look like the second coming of the joker - the trick is knowing which category you fall into. By all means experiment just make sure you’ve got a backup plan - extensions anyone?

What do you do when your face starts showing the first signs of the dreaded a word - ageing! Style Bazaar's resident beauty fanatic Lola shares her story. As I continue the exorable slide into my mid 20s I'm starting to feel like the skin I'm in and the body I've known so well for all these years is starting to betray me -call it the verging on 25 year old itch if you will. My skin is definitely less supple than it was. And in times of stress creasing my forehead has become less super cute and more an invitation to wrinkles and lines. It's like the skin (I have to treat it with some distance as I feel we've become virtual strangers overnight) is rebelling against me. Although it could have something to do with the gross neglect I put it through in my teens. There's something very catholic about it almost like no skin sin goes unpunished. Back then sleeping in my make up would result in a look that was part rock chick part sex kitten all messed up hair and smudged eyeliner now all I get for my laziness are spots and blotchy skin. And don't even get me started on the bod. A gym membership is starting to feel as necessary as food and shelter now that my waistline
has gone from working it to wobbly. So as I approach my mid 20s and a whole other tick box I've decided that a strategic offence is the best defence and to this end have bought a night cream – no. 7 Protect and Perfect - and am considering buying an electric skin care brush - from what I gather it's kind of like an electric toothbrush for your face and improves skin tone. And hey it's not all bad news there are a plethora of unturned milestones and unexplored delights awaiting me - the search for a signature hairstyles for one and there is still hope. I reckon if Demi Moore can look so goddess like and gorgeous at 40 plus - albeit with a little bit of help from a surgeon's knife then my mid to late twenties could just be my best half decade yet.
