Higher Education in the US With more than 4,000 colleges and universities, the United States has one of the finest systems of higher education in the world. US higher education is unparalleled for its vitality, quality, and diversity, which helps propel its leading role in the fields of business, engineering, science, and education. By choosing an American education, over 500,000 international students have experienced the benefits of studying at some of the world’s best universities each year and the most exciting journey of their lives.

Undergraduate:

How to Choose a Course

In the United States of America undergraduate refers to those who are studying towards a bachelor’s degree. The most common course consists of four years of study leading to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), a Bachelor of Science (B.S.), or sometimes another bachelor’s degree such as Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.), Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.), Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) or Bachelor of Philosophy (B.Phil.) Five-Year Professional Architecture programs offer the Bachelor of Architecture Degree (B.Arch.).Unlike the British model, degrees in law and medicine are not offered at undergraduate level and are completed as graduate study after receiving a bachelor’s degree. Neither field specifies or prefers any undergraduate major, though medicine has set prerequisite courses that must be taken before enrollment.

Courses: While studying at an American university a variety of courses are taken to obtain a degree. Each course will be divided into:

Graduate Degrees: Students who have gained their bachelor’s degree can continue their education with a Masters Degree, which normally requires the student to have majored in a closely related field. Ambitious students, who want to pursue their career, can continue to study for a PhD program which takes an additional 3/5 years of research.

Core courses: Also known as ‘general education’ courses, these classes provide the foundation for university education and are required of all students. Some of these courses will cover areas such as mathematics, humanities, physical sciences, and social sciences. Major courses: in America, a major, or ‘concentration,’ is the main subject area during your undergraduate studies. When beginning to take major courses (usually at the start of the third year), certain courses will be required, and will be chosen from others related to the major. Minor courses: A minor is a secondary field of university study that involves a smaller number of required courses than a major. Minor courses can be taken to explore different subject areas to the major, to pursue personal interests or to specialize within the main field of study. Academic tracks: Once a major has been decided a particular ‘path ‘ is followed. An academic path is a group of courses that focuses on a specific subdiscipline within a major and can be customized to suit specific interests.

Your life as a University student Students’ progress through an undergraduate degree and status as a student will change from Freshman, to Sophomore, to Junior, to Senior. We outline a brief description of each step of student life:

Freshman: In the first year, the focus is on introductory courses in a wide range of subjects. These are usually required core academic courses to receive a solid educational grounding and build the foundation from which to expand academic knowledge and skills. Introductory courses often become your main programs of study (known as majors) e.g. Economics is taken to do a Business major. Sophomore: In the second year, core courses are completed to advance in some subjects to the next tier. Having decided on the major, prerequisite courses can be taken at this time. Electives can be chosen in subjects of particular interest.

Junior: By the third year, a major will have been declared. Study will become more focused and in-depth as advanced courses for the major are taken. Senior: In your fourth year, final courses are completed and the last exams are taken up obtain the Bachelor’s degree Entry requirements: To gain entry into university, international students need to be over 17 years old and will be required to submit a TOEFL 53-61 or IELTS 4.5-5.0 equivalent score and a high school transcript. A SAT score is sometimes required for undergraduate programs and a GMAT or GRE score is normally required for graduate courses. In addition to standardized tests, universities place great attention to personal statements and application essays, letters of recommendation and commitment to extracurricular activities when selecting applications.

Students attending The PLUS preparation courses at Rider campus, who will enrol at Rider University, will be automatically accepted and their courses credited for the university degree. Internship Opportunity ONLY AT PLUS PLUS students attending one of our academic year preparation courses at our Rider campus will have the option to gain an Internship* opportunity and work in a job directly related to their course orientation at one of out partnership companies.

*In accordance with VISA regulations internships will not be remunerated.
