As every new year opens, throughout the world the same rituals to face with more optimism a new stage in life are performed. For most of us, those are nothing more than good intentions hoping to help us overcome our little miseries and, exceptionally, that of the ones around us, trying to improve our lives as much as possible.
But, there are also the great purposes, the ones of the political, economic, social, technological or cultural leaders, expressed through the loudspeakers provided by the mass media. The VIPs of our societies offer us their predictions and visions of what is to come in this (once again) crucial 2014.
The first ones: the small, individual “wishes�, are soon neglected and pushed into the background as mere attempts born out of false hopes.
But, in the second case, those "predictions" become part of the official discourse and their analysis will be taking into consideration for the political or economical decision making that, certainly, will have an influence in our lives. In "Main Street, 0: Augmented Reality", text and photography combine to discuss the discourse and the reality, the huge gap between them and the prevailing and ambiguous notions of reality and fiction that we accept as such in our societies. A metaphor of a society torn between accepting the image of the world as offered by the official mass media and the one we all can see at the streets of our cities.
Images too that exemplify the always opposing tensions between the collective and the individual; images, finally, that show us how, in the so-
ciety of the spectacle, the truthful analysis of the reality is substituted by the political and economic fictions of the elites. Following the line of research started with the project "Main Street, 0" (in fact, as an extension of this work (always) in progress) the images from
Main Street, 0: Augmented Reality" are made up with the combination of documentary B&W photographs taken on the streets (here and now, emphasizing once again the situation, not the individual: there are no isolated subjects, we all are part of the situation) and pree-
xisting texts, excerpts of speeches, analysis, reports or press releases with a common denominator: what lies ahead in the near future. In this new series of images, photographs take a greater role and prevail over the texts; maybe just a "wish", the hope that reality will win definitively over fiction, so that never again it could be ignored.
Igor Calvo Bilbao, 2014 Augmented reality (AR) is a live, copy, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented (or supplemented) by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented), by a computer.
Con el inicio de cada nuevo año, se repiten a lo largo y ancho de todo el mundo los mismos rituales para encarar con optimismo una nueva etapa. En su mayor parte, no son más que buenos propósitos para tratar de vencer nuestras pequeñas miserias y, excepcionalmente, la de aquell@s que nos rodean, intentando mejorar así, en la medida de lo posible, nuestras vidas.
Pero también están los grandes propósitos, los de l@s líderes políticos, económicos, sociales, tecnológicos…expresados a través de los altavoces de los medios de comunicación. L@s VIPs de nuestras sociedades nos ofrecen sus predicciones y visiones de lo que está por venir en este (nuevamente) crucial 2014.
Los primeros “deseos”, los pequeños, los personales; son pronto desdeñados y relegados al cajón como meros intentos basados en vanas esperanzas. Pero, en el segundo caso, esas predicciones pasan a formar parte del discurso y su análisis se tiene en cuenta para tomar decisiones políticas o económicas que, a buen seguro, influenciarán de una manera u otra nuestras vidas. En “Gran Vía, 0: Realidad Aumentada”, texto y fotografía se combinan para hablar del discurso y la realidad, de la enorme brecha que los separa y de las ambiguas nociones sobre realidad y ficción que imperan, y que aceptamos como tales.v Una metáfora de una sociedad dividida entre aceptar la imagen del mundo tal y como se le ofrece desde los medios de comunicación y la que puede ver en las calles.
Imágenes, también, que ejemplifican la siempre tensa relación entre lo colectivo y lo individual. Imágenes, finalmente, que nos muestran
cómo en la sociedad del espectáculo se sustituye el análisis veraz de la realidad por las ficciones político-económicas de las élites. Siguiendo la línea de investigación iniciada con el proyecto “Gran Vía, 0” y como una extensión de este trabajo (siempre) en curso, las imágenes de
“Gran Vía, 0: Realidad Aumentada” se conforman a través de la conjunción de fotografías documentales en B&N tomadas en la calle (aquí y ahora, haciendo hincapié nuevamente en la situación, no en el/la individuo: no hay sujetos aislad@s, tod@s formamos parte de esa situación) y textos preexistentes, extraidos de discursos, análisis, informes o notas de prensa con un denominador común: qué es lo que nos depara el futuro a corto/medio plazo.
En esta nueva serie de imágenes, las fotografías toman mayor protagonismo y se imponen a los textos; quizás, simplemente el reflejo de un “deseo”, la esperanza de que la realidad se imponga definitivamente a la ficción, de tal forma que nunca más podamos obviarla.
