The CATHEDRAL TIMES The weekly newsletter of the Cathedral of St. Philip · Serving Atlanta and the World · January 28, 2018

YOUR GENEROSITY AND COMMITMENT ARE MAGNIFICENT! This past December, an old friend took me to lunch. He had lots of good things to say, which I appreciated. But then he furrowed his eyes and wondered how the Cathedral was doing financially. He does not always follow the weekly newsletter or website news about the Cathedral, but he had noted my December letter describing our financial position. In that December letter (I am sure you will recall!), I advised all of us that the Cathedral of St. Philip needed to receive $1,142,000 in financial commitments if we were to finish the 2017 financial year evenly. That was a huge number! (Our annual operating budget is $4,500,000 – so we needed about a quarter of that amount.) I also reminded our community that we almost always need about that amount, every December, for our finances to come out even. This Cathedral community is an amazing center of worship, ministry, and service. We serve grace, excellence, and hospitality in creative ways every month of the year! But that ministry requires resources. Here is my reminder again: grace is free, but ministry costs money! It costs money to support the campus and staff and energy and excellent hospitality of this place. But often, that money does not come in to the Cathedral until the last month or two of the year. (We are similar to many organizations that way, aren’t we? Note the many retail establishments, partnerships and firms, and businesses that seem to settle their finances in the last quarter of every year.) In faith, I know that God will provide. But in practice (and when I worry in the middle of night), I never know whether we will make it! Will the community step up to our commitments of generosity and service? Well, I am thrilled to say: You did! You did it. The Cathedral needed to receive $1,142,000. And we received $1,104,000, almost all of what we needed, and one of the largest December receipts we have ever recorded. Our unbudgeted deficit for 2017 comes in at ($31,000). Wow. Thank you! And THANKS SO MUCH to those of you who were fulfilling your pledges throughout the year and not waiting until December! Every one of you was magnificent; you made a huge difference. You are part of an amazingly generous and committed Cathedral community. Thank you! Your companion parishioners thank you, and the world thanks you. With your faithful commitment of money and resources, the Cathedral of St. Philip continues to serve the world in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Our God thanks you! Our 2018 is now begun. The snow is over! Holy routines have resumed. The Cathedral Antiques Show is open this week. We have a superb new priest, the Reverend Lauren Holder, with us! Three of our parochial entities are, or will be, seeking new Directors this year. All ages are finding Christian formation and community here! We are serving the poor and those in prison. Holy energy is thriving in the Cathedral of St. Philip with grace, with excellence, and with hospitality. All this happens because of your generosity! This year, 2018, will be even greater and more magnificent than 2017. Thank you!

SPIRITUALITY LENTEN QUIET DAY: WANDERING IN THE WILDERNESS – WITHOUT GETTING LOST The first thing that Jesus did after his baptism was to follow the Spirit into the wilderness. He spent forty days there dueling with the devil over whether and how he would engage the institutional powers of his day. His choices would determine what he would do and who he would be. We are called during the season of Lent to follow the Spirit into our own wilderness. It’s a time to think again about the choices that we are making in our lives. Are they drawing us closer to God or driving us farther away? Canon George Maxwell will lead us in several contemplative practices that are designed to guide us in this discernment. The Quiet Day will take place in the Lanier House on the Cathedral campus, 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, February 17. The cost is $20 and includes lunch. Please register before February 12 at stphilipscathedral.org/quietday or by contacting Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@stphilipscathedral.org or 404-3651031. We look forward to having you with us.

TOUR OF HOMES January 28, 2018 — 12 noon –5 pm Step into a world of timeless style as five of Atlanta's most beautiful private residences are opened to the public for just one day. Each home is a showcase of the best in interior design, architecture, and the art of good living.

WOODHAVEN ROAD

ANDREWS DRIVE Built in 1951 for the Patterson family, this Lewis Crook designed home was purchased by interior designer John Banks in 2014. A renovation by Spitzmiller and Norris brought this elegant, yet cozy, home to its current state of perfection. A contemporary art collection combined with one-of-a-kind antiques showcase the designer’s unique style. An acanthus leaf and Greek key design create continuity throughout the house and gardens.

PALISADES DRIVE Palisades, built in 1920, was renovated by Keith Summerour in 2015 when, desiring a walkable area close to the Atlanta restaurant scene, he moved back to the city from Towerhouse Farm. The builder of Palisades was Mike Gullett. A gym was added by Danny Combs and Billy Cobb. Landscape architect Jeremy Smearman of planters and interior dsigner Caroline Normark each participated in the Palisades we see today. The home is filled with Summerour's original artwork inspired by his travels both domestic and international.

Cathedral BOOK STORE HART READERS RESUME IN FEBRUARY The Cathedral Book Store’s Hart Readers will host the Rev. Peter Wallace as he discusses his new book, Getting to Know Jesus (Again). The discussion, followed by a book signing, takes place on Thursday, February 1, at 6:30 p.m. in the Gould Room. Ensure your place at the talk by reserving a seat online at cathedralbookstore.org on the News & Events page or stop by and tell us that you will be attending. About Getting to Know Jesus (Again): Lent is a journey of the mind, heart, and spirit from the ashes of humanity to the cross and beyond—to the empty tomb. The central figure in that journey is Jesus. But who was he really? Why did he come and minister among us? How can his teachings enhance our lives? Why did he die? What does his resurrection really mean? These are questions that spur believers of all ages to seek a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Son of Man in their lives. In this collection of fifty-two meditations and additional resources for spiritual growth, Peter Wallace guides readers through the life and ministry, the words and works of Jesus, with the goal of getting to know him in fresh new ways that encourage a stronger faith and a spirited engagement with the world around us.

A DAY WITH CYNTHIA BOURGEAULT

Icons Of Grace: Shining the Light of God’s Love Through Our Stories

PRESENTED BY THE CATHEDRAL AND CONTEMPLATIVE OUTREACH ATLANTA

Icons are vehicles through which we can see beyond or through an image to more deeply experience the holy. Our experiences can serve a similar purpose when reflected on together in community. Join the women of the Cathedral on the 2018 Lenten Retreat, March 2-4 at Kanuga in Hendersonville, North Carolina, as we use the stories of scripture, our own lives, poetry, images, a contemplative art offering, and silence to more deeply cull the graces God gifts us. Plenty of time for rest, fellowship, and enjoying the beauty of Kanuga will be in the schedule! The retreat leader will be the Rev. Beth Knowlton, Rector of St. Mark’s in San Antonio (and former Canon for Liturgy and Worship here at the Cathedral!). Costs for the weekend are $290 (private) and $221 (shared) and include lodging Friday and Saturday, and meals Friday dinner through breakfast on Sunday. Register online at stphilipscathedral.org/lentenretreat or contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@stphilipscathedral. org or 404-365-1031, for further information. The deadline for registration and payment is January 31. Space is limited, so register soon!

Modern day mystic, Episcopal priest, writer, and internationally known retreat leader, Cynthia Bourgeault divides her time between solitude at her seaside hermitage in Maine, and a demanding schedule traveling globally to teach and spread the recovery of the Christian contemplative and wisdom path. On Saturday, March 17, Cynthia will explore the themes of her book, The Heart of Centering Prayer at the Cathedral This day-long conference will include lectures, discussion and question and answer, and of course, time for centering prayer itself. The cost will be $50/person and will include lunch. Register online at stphilipscathedral.org/spirituality or contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@stphilipscathedral.org or 404-365-1031, for more information.
