From The Desk of Father Jon On the Joy of the Resurrection of Christ Christ is Risen! Truly He is risen! Χριστός Ἀνέστη! Ἁλληθῶς Ἀνέστη! May the joy of the resurrection of Christ be ever present with all of you throughout the Paschal season all the way to the Ascension of Christ! May you greet each other with Christ is Risen! Truly He is risen! Χριστός Ἀνέστη! Ἁλληθῶς Ἀνέστη! May the Paschal Troparion be sung or said before every meal that God so graciously provides for us. What is Resurrectional joy? I know many of us can take for granted our most wondrous Orthodox Christian Faith. Yet, it is in truth and in deed the light of the world! Jesus said, “ I am the Resurrection and Life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.” John 11:25 The promise of eternal life with God becomes real in the resurrection of Christ. We no longer live and die as Adam and Eve of old, but our soul is given the blessed possibility of living with God in blessedness until the Second Coming of Christ and our bodily resurrection. When we look to see and experience the joy of the resurrection, we need only read and attend the divine services for this Paschal period! The hymnology and readings are filled with the joy of the resurrection. The entire first week we are continuously celebrating Pascha – the Passover from death to life in the resurrection of Christ! Who can keep from smiling when we hear or chant– “Δεῦτε λάβετε φῶς ἐκ τοῦ ἀνεσπέρου φωτός, καὶ δοξάσατε Χριστὸν τὸν ἀναστάντα ἐκ νεκρῶν. Come receive the light, from the never-setting light; and glorify Christ who has risen from the dead.” Or “Χριστὸς ἀνέστη ἐκ νεκρῶν, θανάτῳ θάνατον πατήσας, καὶ τοῖς ἐν τοῖς µνήµασι, ζωὴν χαρισάµενος. Christ is risen from the dead, by death trampling down upon death, and to those in the tombs He has granted life.” In truth the Ode VII is the essence of our joy – “This is it, the Day which is chosen and holy, * Day One of the Sabbaths. * It is the queen-day, the Lord's Day, * and the Feast of all feasts, * and the Festival above every festival, * on which we extol Christ and bless Him to the ages.” The promise is kept, the prophecies fulfilled – “O Pascha, the great and most sacred Passover, O Christ, * You the wisdom and Logos and the power of God: * Grant that we may more distinctly partake of You * on that day that has no evening in Your kingly rule.” We look to the King of kings and Lord of lords, in truth the King of Glory, to reign over our hearts and minds and bring peace to us. “You endured crucifixion and abolished death and resurrected from the dead. Do therefore now bring peace into our life, O Lord, as the only Almighty One.” Near the end of the Paschal Orthros we break into praise that knows no bounds when we chant. “Today a sacred Pascha has been revealed to us; a Pascha new and holy, a Pascha mystical, a Pascha all-venerable, Pascha, the Redeemer Christ himself; a Pascha that is blameless, a Pascha that is great, a Pascha of believers, a Pascha that has opened for us the gates of Paradise, a Pascha that sanctifies believers all.” May the resurrection be with us throughout the whole year. – Fr. Jon Thank You – Holy Friday Retreat A big thank you to everyone who made the Holy Friday Retreat a great success! All the youth that attended received a wonderful notebook filled with the Engomia (Lamentations) and 8 icons surrounding our Holy Week experience. Please look for pictures of the event on our website in the near future. The highlight was the love and care the children took in wrapping up the body of Jesus as He came down off the Cross and how they all 3

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church May 2014 worked together to take Jesus around the church in the procession at the Unnailing Vespers. God bless our youth! Vacation Church School Please mark your calendars for VCS 2014 – June 16-20, 2014 9am-12noon each day. We are excited about our new theme “The Miracles of God.” Our team of teachers, staff and helpers will be back. Fr. Jon and Presbytera Barbara have a special project for the youth to get their hands into! Look for our banner and the registration form and sign up early.

From Emanuel Miliotis, Parish Council President Xristos Anesti, Christ is Risen! It was great seeing the church filled for our Pascha services. We welcome all you came and hope that you left spiritually uplifted. We pray that we continue to have our church filled moving forward. I do want to thank all those who volunteered during Holy week & our Pascha picnic. It takes a team of committed leaders to make it happen. Thank you Looking ahead in May, we have our Greek Festival on May 16-18. This is our one big opportunity to showcase our community to Wilmington. This year more than ever, we need volunteers both the week leading into the weekend and of course the weekend. Please see any of the festival chairs or any Parish council member if you aren’t sure where you would like to help. One of the biggest things we can give those who visit us is not only a taste of our food, or a peek of our culture but more important than all is the love we have for one another and our guests. I am looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Communications Alexandros Theodoropoulos ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΑΝΕΣΤΗ! CHRISTOS ANESTI! CHRIST IS RISEN! We hope all of you had a spiritually uplifting experience during the Lent season and the celebration of our Lord Christ’s Resurrection! We are excited to share information about a number of important technology updates with you that we hope you will find as important as we do! We recently acquired a special hearing aid system that is now connected to the sound system in the sanctuary and our hope is that this will allow our older especially parishioners with hearing issues to better listen and follow our services. The system has, at this point, four receivers available that are simple in their use, feature volume controls and are carried by each parishioner individually. These receivers are located at the Pangari (candle stand) in the Narthex area so, in case you feel you would like to try one of these, please ask one of the pangari attendants on duty. We would be glad to receive any feedback you might have. This system was used already during the Holy Week services by some of our parishioners and the first reviews were very encouraging. In case we see a great demand, we will proceed with expanding the system with more receivers so that more of our parishioners will be able to use them. In addition, our Technology ministry has acquired and set up an additional choir microphone on the left side of the solea in order to support the plan and efforts of our Liturgical Life ministries to enhance the chanting experience during our services by using both a right and left choir in the sanctuary. We are looking forward to seeing the left choir too on the solea soon and please stay tuned for more information on this in other sections of upcoming newsletter issues. Moreover, following requests from parishioners of ours that travel or are sick or homebound, our Technology ministry is currently evaluating systems that allow the live streaming of our services on the internet in an effort to explore the possibility of offering this service to our parishioners on a permanent basis. There have been a number of significant improvements in this kind of technologies recently that could allow us to have such a system in place at an affordable cost. We have temporarily set up one of these systems for testing purposes and the live streaming can be seen on our website directly at

5

www.stnicholaswilmington.org/LiveStreaming.html . Please check our calendar for a schedule of services and feel free to try it and offer us feedback when you have the chance. Also, please stay tuned for more updates on this project. Finally, in order to better support the above as well as a number of other upgrades (the use of information technology to better organize our Greek Festival is one of them), our Technology ministry has also been working to further improve our computer network infrastructure. We would like to remind all of our parishioners that have internet access to visit our Online Multimedia Gallery that contains a great number of photos as well as videos from our various parish life events. You may access our Online Gallery on our website by following the Multimedia Gallery link on the left pane of the page. The photos can also be accessed directly through our Picassa web album at http://picasaweb.google.com/stnicholasgoc and the videos through our church’s YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/stnicholasgoc . We would further like to extend special Thanks to all of you that have contributed media content and encourage any of you that happen to have photos and/or videos from our parish life events to send them to us. In addition, please be reminded that our church has a pretty active facebook page that can be accessed at https://www.facebook.com/StNicholasWilmington . We would appreciate very much any of your efforts to help us further promote our FB page now that such social networking media have been becoming more popular. Also, our church’s email list has been growing as well. If you know of any parishioners or others that are not in our list and would like to receive our church’s email communications, like our weekly email bulletin and so on, please have them forward their email addresses to our church office. In case you have any suggestions or feedback that could help us in our continuous effort to improve our communications publications/media please contact our church office at (910) 392-4444 or office@stnicholaswilmington.org or our Communications Chair, at communications@stnicholaswilmington.org . On a final and personal note, I would like to thank Daphne Snow for her years of service not only as our

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church parish office administrator but more specifically as a vital member of our Communications ministries. As it is well known, our office has been functioning as an “information hub” for Fr. Jon, the Parish Council and all the ministries of our church. Daphne, in addition to being in charge of a number of our Communications publications including our Sunday and weekly email bulletins as well as our monthly newsletter and numerous other projects, was also working hard to coordinate the spreading of information among all of us working for the PC and our ministries and to send out messages about our parish life events to our church’s email list. She put her own unique touch and care on all of her communications tasks and projects, offering a great sense of support for them, giving the feeling that she was treating them like these were children of hers … As the Communications Chair, I had the opportunity to work with her more than most ministry leaders and I personally consider my interaction with her very interesting and particular … I would like to thank Daphne for all she has done and further wish her Δύναµη (strength) and all the best as she transitions into helping her husband David set up their new practice as well as to all of her future endeavors and to her personal and family journey in life!

Youth Catechism Courtney Malahias

Christos Anesti! What a beautiful Lenten season we have experienced! "Let the light of your face shine upon us O Lord" psalm 4:6 On April 5 George Malahias and Peter Vogiatzis travelled to Mooresville, NC to St. Luke's Greek Orthodox Church. They did a fantastic job representing our church. Father Robert gave the teenagers such a moving speech that it brought tears to Peter and my eyes. He asked them to count the icons in the church - all those teens were counting like crazy and all had about the same number. He then said " you forgot 18 of them". They looked dumbfounded but slowly realization fell upon them..... We are all living icons. That was such a

May 2014 powerful message for all of us. "Let the light of your face shine upon us O Lord" took on a whole new meaning. WE are the light. Each day our focus should be on spreading our light and uplifting all people we come into contact with. I am SO proud of our youth and their light certainly shined when they said there speeches. I LOVE our youth. They are a great example to all of us. Sunday School graduation is around the corner- the date is JUNE 8 These are the graduating seniors I have...... Vasili Brown, Emily Kirkby, Rena Poulson, Dino Ioannou, Tasso Vogiatzis, Koula Fragos, Catherine Franck. If there are any other HS graduating seniors.... Please let me know! NOW GO LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE!!!!!! Grateful to be in his service.

Words can not express our gratitude to everyone who contributed to having such a beautiful Greek Independence program, so many people expressed how much they enjoyed the program and the attendance was the highest we ever had. We would like to give special thanks to Dr. Kathleen Jewell Anagnost for her wonderful speech and slide presentation. Many, many people said what a great speaker we had. A big thank you to all the children who recited poems, danced or sang. We are so proud of all of you. You worked very hard and you succeeded in presenting us with an unforgettable program. Many thank to Zaharoula Katsikis for teaching our youth Greek folk dances, you are doing an amazing job. We also want to thank Nota Dukas, our χρυσοχέρα, for her hard work sewing all these beautiful, authentic costumes. Many thanks to the Hellenic School, parents, teachers and its director, Anesti Logothetis, for all their hard work they put into this program. 6

We would like to thank Alexandros Theodoropoulos for his technical assistance. Many thanks to everyone who brought desserts and fruits, too many to mention by name. Many thanks to Kathy Dimopoulos for printing the program and flyer, and to those who helped with the clean up. We would like to thank Barbara Harris for photographing this event. Most of all thanks to the St. Nicholas Community for being present and showing your support for the efforts of our children.

OCF (Orthodox Christian Fellowship) Campus Ministry

On another note, the group had its last meeting for this semester on Monday, April 8th where the following items were discussed: 1. They elected officers for the new academic year 2014-15: President- Emma Sieck, Vice President - Eleni Carros, Secretary - Anna Fergione, Website & Public Relations - Yanni Fragos. Please join us in congratulating the new officers and wishing them Δύναµη (strength) and every success during their tenure. 2. The Open Forum lunches with Fr. Jon and Fr. Timothy at the Varsity Cafe in the UNCW Fisher Student Center will continue through the month of April. These meetings start at 11:00am and all are welcome to join. In case you know of any students that would be interested, please encourage them to attend. 3. The Holy Week Schedule was to be sent to all students. 4. A great idea for the fall semester was discussed, that is, a Beach Retreat for all OCF students in the region. Fr. Jon will be looking for a family to host the retreat at their beach home. He will also coordinate with the SE OCF regional office in order to determine the best weekend to schedule the event. Our OCF chapter will be the host and work on the theme. 5. Updates for host families for our OCF students to come in May and in August. 6. Fr. Jon is working on developing an Orthodox network in the state of NC for all Orthodox parishes to send in their information for their rising college students in May/early June and our OCF group wants to help. Fr. Jon will also be coordinating with the SE OCF regional office. 7. We wish to all students, Δύναµη (strength) and every success to their final exams and further hope that all of them will have a great summer! The OCF meetings will resume in the fall.

Fr. Jon Emanuelson Congratulations to our graduates. Looking forward to the new year with a new group of officers. We hope to connect with all of our new students during the summer so that we can be ready to start the new year running. On behalf of Fr. Timonthy and myself we have really enjoyed working with the OCF this year, God’s blessings for the summer. Christos Anesti! Christ is Risen! On Sunday April 6th, our OCF group hosted the screening of the award-winning movie “The Island” at the UNCW Lumina Theater on Sunday, April 6th, 2014. The event took place from 7pm - 10pm and also featured giveaways and a panel with Fr. Jon (from St. Nicholas) and Fr. Timothy from St. Basil. During this panel session, there was a great and very interesting discussion with all the attendees regarding aspects of the traditional Orthodox Christian faith that pertained to the film. Furthermore, there was also a sealed box at the group’s booth where passerbys anonymously filled out scraps of paper with things that they wished to be absolved of and deposited them in that box. The plan was for a ceremonial Orthodox Christian prayer to be offered over them, at a later date, in order for them to be burned with other religious artifacts following Easter. Please join us in thanking the group’s officers, Nick Syrpis, Jenny Walsh and Emma Sieck for their hard work organizing this event. We would further like to identify potential host families for our OCF students. The pertinent document/form can be found on our website at www.stnicholaswilmington.org/Docs/ OutreachEvangelism/OCF/OCFSponsors.pdf . Please see Fr. Jon for more information about our new OCF Host Family or Sponsorship program. Please consider becoming a host family for one of our OCF students.

8

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Please see the following note from Alexandros Theodoropoulos: It is with Χαρµολύπη (Greek word for a mixed emotional state of joy and sadness) that I mention here that two of our OCF officers are (hopefully) graduating this semester … I feel joy for their accomplishment to finish their degrees and being now able to move to the next stage of their journey in life! At the same time, I feel sadness because I will greatly miss them … Both Nick and Jenny were so instrumental in helping to start our OCF chapter about three years ago being its founding members … I can also find no words good enough to describe their dedication and amazing and hard work for our OCF group, being there and representing it, even under rainy weather conditions, in pretty much all the numerous events on campus that gave us the opportunity to have a presence, doing true Outreach and Evangelism missionary work, helping our priests to spread our Lord Christ’s teachings through the Orthodox Christian Faith …! Sometimes, being the only ones manning our booth, giving the fight as true soldiers and servants of God, working and progressing one visitor at a time … Keeping the light of our ministry’s lighthouse on … Nick and Jenny, thank you so much for all you have done for our OCF ministry! You might not know it, but I believe I too have learned so much from my interaction with you and all these experiences we shared working for our campus ministry … For this reason, I feel I have formed and will always have a special connection with you that has been so spiritually rewarding, it has really been a journey … For all the above, I would like to express my gratitude … I would further like to wish you Δύναµη (strength) and all the best as you continue your personal journey in life and I hope and pray that you will also continue your work with the Faith from anywhere God’s plan will take you! Please stay in touch ……. We would is currently looking into meeting at 8:30 pm every other Thursday night at our church. The finalized meeting date information will be posted

May 2014 through our other means of communications. Also, the group has informal Open Forum lunch meetings with Fr. Jon and Fr. Timothy (from St. Basil) at the Varsity Cafe in the UNCW Fisher Student Center starting at 11:00 am (please note the change in the time) every Monday. All are welcome to join. In case you know of any students that would be interested, please encourage them to attend.

Outreach & Evangelism Diane Kastran McGowan Family Outreach Sunday on February 9th was a very nice event for our community, with a focus on fellowship and good will toward those who are not always in attendance or involved in our church activities. As we discussed during our last O & E Team meeting, this type of event, where there is an outpouring of good will, and Christian love to our neighbors, should not be limited to an event once or twice a year. We know that Christ would always have us reaching out to others, and not just on certain occasions, especially to those who need encouragement to participate, who, like all of us, need to be loved and valued by our community, as well as our need for spiritual fulfillment. When we do not feel valued, we sometimes retreat. Of course, many of us are well entrenched in our roles with various ministries, like Philoptochos, the Parish Council, HDF, AHEPA, Sunday School, etc etc. This is great for our community and there are many who work hard for St. Nicholas and we are thankful to all of you who participate and give of your time and talents. Let us not, however, get so wrapped up that we lose sight of the newcomer or reluctant parishioner, who may feel that they are outside the circle, and need that encouragement to say, “you’re needed” or “we’d love to see you help out”, or “are you coming to the meeting”? May Christ be our guide to a welcoming and loving St. Nicholas Community which will grow by leaps 9

Greek Festival 2014 Festival Committee How can I get involved with the 2014 Greek Festival?

This has become the largest ethnic festival in the New Hanover County Area and it can only happen with the collective help from everyone. We will have volunteer sign up sheets available outside the Hellenic Center soon. You can help in so many different ways…the important thing is to JUST get involved. It’s a family affair and everyone in your family can help and do something. If you cook or can help with the kitchen prep work, you can help with everything that is needed to prepare to feed over 10,000 guests during the 3 day weekend of May 16, 17 and 18. Help is not only needed the weekend of the festival, but now, during the planning stages. If you can bake, we would love for you to help prepare the pastries, baking schedules to be announced. Don’t like the heat or the noise outside, you can help make salads or cup pastries, help with church tours, help in the bookstore, or help with cooking demonstations. Help promote the event to everyone you know; share
