From the Desk of Father Jon A Treasure of our Orthodox Faith The Orthodox Study Bible St. Paul in writing to Timothy says, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17 We tend to think the reading of the Bible is done by people outside the Orthodox Church. But nothing could further from the truth! St. John Chrysostom encouraged all Christians to read the Scriptures (the Bible) daily. St. Paul in his second letter to Timothy instructs most wisely. Reading our Orthodox Study Bible is part of what makes us complete Orthodox Christians. And yes, without reading the Bible we are incomplete. It is the word of God that sets us in motion, as it does the whole of creation. St. James writes, “Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” James 1:21-22 It is by taking action in the gospel the teachings of our Lord take on flesh and meaning. The hearing has to beget action. Otherwise, “faith without works is dead.” James 2:20. And again, he reminds us, “But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.” James 1:25 The message of the gospel of Jesus resonates and compels as it is read aloud in our Orthodox Church and in our homes. When Jesus was tempted by the devil in the desert, he answered, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’” Luke 4:4 (Deuteronomy 8:3) The parable of the Sower is about God’s word and how it is supposed to find fertile ground in our hearts and bear much fruit. Jesus, speaking to a crowd, says, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and do it.” Luke 8:21. Not only is the word of God supposed to be heard on a regular basis in church and in home, it is to be shared as we hear on the day of Pentecost, “And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.” And again, “Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.” Acts 4:31, 6:7. St. Paul again reminds us, “So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17 And when we take up the armor of God, we are to “take the helmet of salvation, and sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;” Ephesians 6:17 It is with the Bible we find all manner of blessings. Together with our participation in prayer, fasting, worship and participation in the Holy Mysteries of our Orthodox Church, we become complete! Every Orthodox Christian home should have at least one copy of the Orthodox Study Bible. Other bibles are not complete. The Orthodox Study Bible is a treasure trove of the word of God, footnotes, cross references, morning and evening prayers, study aids, articles on the Faith and introductions to each book of the Bible. The theme of this year’s GOYA Lenten retreat and St. Stephen’s Summer Camp were the word of God. These two faith filled events have opened the Bible up to our youth! May they become true friends of Jesus Christ through the word of God. I have some Bible helps and aids for anyone who loves Him. Please make sure to ask about these. Remember, Bibles are like parachutes, they only work when they are open and used. It is my fervent prayer that in the near future, we will all be hearers and doers of the word of God. And we, the Orthodox Christians of St. Nicholas, will become a fountain of living water, sharing the word of God with our family members, friends and all we have the opportunity to witness to! Love, Fr. Jon 3

From the Parish Council President Barbara Reynolds As I am writing this I am thinking of Fr. Jon and the St. Nicholas youth. They are at St. Stephens camp at the Diakonia Center this week. St Stephen's Summer Camp is grounded on the principals of living a true Orthodox lifestyle with twice daily liturgical services, opportunities for reflection, community living and meals, athletics, arts & crafts, and nightly social activities. We have heard from our youth that this is a week of spiritual growth as well as a time to connect with old friends and make new friends. I can’t wait to hear from them when they get back next week! Please thank the Philoptochos Society as they funded all our campers this year with our share of the Agape luncheon profits. I hope all of you are enjoying your summer, relaxing with family and friends and spending time on your spiritual growth. Not only do we have our beautiful Orthodox liturgy each Sunday and the Orthodox Study Bible, but there are also many rich Orthodox sources on the Internet. Below are three that I have used, but there are many more. Please share your favorite sources of inspiration with your family and friends. In His service Barbara 1.

The Greek Orthodox Department of Youth and Young Adult Ministries (Y2AM) offers a weekly series of short, informative, entertaining, and spiritually beneficial videos. The series, “Be the Bee,” is named after a metaphor associated with Elder Paisios of Mount Athos (+1994), and explores ways that we can all focus on what is good and beautiful in our everyday lives. You can access the channel by searching “Y2AM” on YouTube, or going to www.youtube.com/user/y2am. I am not a youth or a young adult, but I really enjoy these videos and learn a lot from them.

We hope everyone is having a wonderful summer!

“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25

The 2016 National Philoptochos Biennial Convention took place in Nashville, TN on July 3-8. We offer our sincere thanks to Benjalee Pittman and Sue Lawler who attended on our behalf. We look forward to hearing news from our sister chapters throughout the country, and participating in new activities to accomplish our mission.

Community News GREEK FESTIVAL

“Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it in gratitude;” (Col 4: 2) How, in practical terms, does one go about prayerfully “being watchful,” – and not only “watchful,” but “in gratitude”? In practice, I find that the two are connected. When I am “watchful,” I take note of the ups and downs of my day, jotting these down in a notebook for just a few minutes before I go to sleep. And in connection with prayer this little exercise brings me gratitude, because I begin to see my life as God’s work in progress, as a journey in Him, rather than letting it pass me by meaninglessly. So for me, “life” is not, as John Lennon sadly noted, “what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”

2017 will be our 25th Annual Greek Festival! Help us Celebrate this Milestone. SUBMIT any classic PHOTOGRAPHS you may have from years 1 through 24 to the Church Office.

Today let me take a few minutes to “be watchful,” because I know that this brings me gratitude, - and gratitude changes everything. Lord, open my eyes today, that I may see what You have to show me, in the circumstances, failures or successes You send my way this summer day.

We want to celebrate all the treasured moments leading to this achievement!
