Tammy Tibbetts is the first in her family to graduate from college–she studied journalism at The College of New Jersey, where her final assignment unexpectedly put her on the path to social entrepreneurship. After reporting on a foundation that sponsored children’s education in war-torn Liberia, she felt the urgent need to give girls worldwide access to an education. This was a story she could not walk away from as an unbiased reporter, so she traveled to Liberia and began to volunteer for the cause after graduation. Meanwhile, Tibbetts landed her dream job at Hearst Magazines, where her career included being a founding web editor of teen websites and then the first social media editor for Seventeen, which later earned her a spot among the industry’s “13 Under 30.” In 2009, Tibbetts had a mission in mind for a social media-driven campaign that would inspire Millennial women to fundraise for girls’ education sponsorships. She shared her concept with a Facebook friend, Christen Brandt (now STF’s Director of International Operations), and they gathered some friends to help launch She’s the First as a YouTube video. By 2012, She’s the First had become a skyrocketing non-profit organization and Tibbetts’ full-time job. She is a frequent speaker on social entrepreneurship and Millennial leadership and has been recognized among Fast Company’s “League of Extraordinary Women” and Forbes’ “30 Under 30” in Education.
