Season Preview

@StetsonWSoccer

The Stetson women’s soccer team opens its first season under head coach Manoj Khettry this Friday, and the coach has high expectations for the 2013 campaign. “I think we can be very good,” Khettry said of his team. “One of the things I’ve been most pleasantly surprised by is the level of player I’ve inherited. It’s very good. “We keep the ball on the ground very well, and we’re starting to become really good competitors in training,” Khettry continued. “That’s who we have to be as a team.” Stetson went just 3-13-1 in 2012, but the team returns nine out of 11 starters from a year ago. For the Hatters to achieve the type of success that they strive for, it’s going to take hard work and consistency. “I’ve tried to get them to understand that every time we have a really good practice, we need to follow it up with another really good practice, because it then becomes a habit,” Khettry said. “Once I feel that we can become a team that can practice and train at a consistently high level, then I can see us being successful.”

A strong group of seniors will lead the way for Stetson this fall, and Khettry couldn’t be more impressed with the class thus far. “They work hard consistently in training,” Khettry said of the seniors. “They have to be leading in training every single day, and that’s what they are doing. I can’t say enough about how much they bring to our team on a daily basis.” Victoria Troccoli started all but one match in goal for Stetson in 2012, and she will be counted on to lead the way again this fall. She finished her first season with the Hatters third in the Atlantic Sun Conference with 73 saves, recorded a .689 save percentage, and notched a 2.09 goals-against average. Another senior in just her second year with the Hatters, Amber Grose will anchor the midfield for the second straight campaign. Last year she started all 17 games, scored one goal, and recorded two assists while logging a team high 1,411 minutes. Virginia Davis and Alexis Trybinski will provide leadership on the back line for the Hatters in 2013. The

former started 13 games in the back last season, while the latter will transition from an offensive role to an outside back position. Trybinski scored one goal and assisted on another in 13 games as a junior. Alyssa Welsh and Kait Jones, the two players with the most career points scored on the team, will lead the offensive attack for Stetson in 2013. Welsh has accumulated 11 goals and six assists during her three years with the Hatters, while Jones has scored four goals and added two assists coming into her senior season.

Khettry will look to underclassmen to help lead as well in his first season at the helm. He will find that help in a group of sophomores who are quickly becoming veterans of the program.

“I think it’s important to develop leadership, so we have three captains, but we also have three vice captains,” Khettry said. “Those vice captains are all sophomores; Autumn Matthews, Makeshia Lucien, and Mara Keomanivane. They’re also proving to be three of the hardest working players on the team.” Fans will find all three of these second year players up the middle for the Hatters in 2013. Lucien begins this fall where she left off last season, leading the defense from a central position. Matthews, meanwhile, will slide up to a defensive midfield position to start the season. Keomanivane, who led the Hatters with three goals as a freshman, joins Grose as a central midfielder. Sophomores Danielle Hurme and Jenna Premo, each of whom scored one goal as freshmen in 2012, will provide depth to the Hatter offense this season. Rebecca Oser and Matha Stubbs, who round out the sophomore class, will help strengthen the Stetson defense in 2013.

tiple positions, the freshmen class will provide plenty of flexibility for the Hatters. “There are a number of freshmen who can contribute, but there are also a number of them who we feel we can develop into better players over the course of their four years,” Khettry said about the team’s group of first year players. “It’s a good class.” Kaitlynn Landry and Brianne Boldrin have seen most their preseason action as outside backs, but can also play in the midfield, or up top. Ashni Deschenes and Paige Law will primarily work as forwards for the Hatters. Victoria Marsh, Eduarda Pavao, Alyssa Swett, and Laurie Scott will provide depth for Stetson throughout the back and midfield. The 2013 version of the Stetson women’s soccer team is set to start the regular season, but the head coach has goals that don’t revolve around winning and losing. “I hope we’re a group of people who step out onto the field and compete every day, who work hard, and who try to play our style,” Khettry said of this team’s identity. “I think if we can do that consistently, we’re going to surprise a lot of people.”

Junior Amber Law will serve as Troccoli’s backup in goal, while Carmen Bernecker will provide midfield depth in her third season in DeLand. With many players being able to contribute from mul-

Manoj Khettry Head Coach First Season Earlham College, 1988 Stetson University Director of Athletics Jeff Altier announced Manoj Khettry as the new head coach of the Stetson women’s soccer team on March 27, 2013, becoming just the third person in program history to helm the Hatters. “I’d like to thank Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operation/SWA Alicia Queally, Athletic Director Jeff Altier and the search committee for offering me such a tremendous opportunity to be the next head women’s soccer coach at Stetson, and for having faith in me to lead the program,” Khettry said after accepting the position. “From the moment I began learning about Stetson, I knew it was a special place,” Khettry continued. “But after meeting with Dr. Wendy Libby and Athletic Director Jeff Altier, I was so impressed with their vision for the future of Stetson and Stetson Athletics, that I knew I wanted to be a part of what they are creating.”

Coach Khettry Head Coaching Experience St. Bonaventure (2006-12) Assistant Coaching Experience Dayton (2003-06) Missouri (2001-03) California (1998-99) Miami [Ohio] (1991-94) Club Coaching Experience U.S. Region 1 (2006-13) U.S. Region 2 (2005-07) Cincinnati Classics (1994-98) Playing Experience Earlham College (1984-88) Education M.A., Miami [Ohio], 1997 B.A., Earlham College, 1988 Coaching Licenses/Diplomas U.S. Soccer “A” License, 1995 NSCAA Adv. Nat’l Diploma, 1994

Khettry comes to DeLand with a wealth of experience, most recently holding the position of Head Women’s Soccer Coach at St. Bonaventure in New York. He coached the Bonnies for seven seasons, leading the team to five straight Atlantic 10 Tournaments from 2008 to 2012. St. Bonaventure was one of only three A-10 schools to qualify for the Atlantic 10 Tournament from 2008-2012 (Dayton and Charlotte being the other two). Named the A-10 Coach of the Year in 2008, Khettry also led St. Bonaventure to its first conference semifinals in 2010. “I am so happy to have Manoj join our staff,” Altier said in March 2013. “He comes to us with a tremendous amount of head coaching experience, successful head coaching experience, especially at a resource challenged institution. He’s going to come into Stetson with more resources available to him than he has had in the past. I have full confidence that he’s going to take our program to heights that we have never reached before.” Khettry’s Bonnies also excelled in the classroom during his tenure. St. Bonaventure qualified for the NSCAA Team Academic Award six years in a row from 2007 to 2012. Twice during that time the Bonnies were in the Top 10 overall (2007-08: Top 5, 2008-09: Top 10). His players also earned a multitude of honors on the pitch, as the Bonnies had a First Team All-Conference selection five straight years, from 2008 to 2012. Prior to taking over the reins at St. Bonaventure, Khettry held assistant coaching positions at the University of Dayton and the University of Missouri (2001-2003). He was with the Flyers from 2003 to 2006 as the team’s top assistant. Responsible for recruiting, team training, goalkeeper training, scouting reports and video, Dayton won the A-10 regular season championship and tournament championship, and earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament twice while Khettry was aboard (2003, 2004). Khettry’s first job in college coaching was as a graduate assistant at Miami of Ohio from 1991-94. From there, Khettry went on to become the Director of Coaching of the Cincinnati Classics from 1994-1998. There he was responsible for hiring coaches for more than 30 teams, creating a club-wide training curriculum and overseeing the administration of the club.

Khettry then became the assistant coach at California. He worked with the Golden Bears for one season, before moving on to work with adidas America as the US Youth Soccer/NSCAA Promotions Manager from 1999-2001. From 2005 to 2007, Khettry also spent time as an assistant coach for Region 2 (‘86/’87 age group, ’91 age group). Khettry has been involved with Region 1 as a staff coach since 2006. A former National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American, and three-time NSCAA All-Region honoree while playing at Earlham College in Indiana, Khettry graduated from the college with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988. He also holds a Master of Arts in Spanish Language and Literature from Miami University of Ohio. Khettry received his “A” License from US Soccer in January 1995 and holds the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, which he received in January 1994.

Stephanie Demake Assistant Coach First Season Worcester State, 2010 Stephanie Demake was named the assistant coach for the Stetson women’s soccer program on June 27, 2013. “Steph’s incredible passion for the game, her desire to be a college coach, her dedication to wanting to improve her craft, and the style of soccer she likes to play were key factors for me in offering her the job,” Stetson head coach Manoj Khettry said on the day Demake was announced as the assistant coach. “Steph is the person that this program and I need in order to improve.”

Demake brings over five years of coaching and operational experience at both youth and collegiate levels to Stetson. Her most recent stint was as an assistant coach at Ohio University during the 2012-13 season. With the Bobcats Demake was responsible for assisting in the planning, organization, and implementation of in season and out of season training sessions, as well as student-athlete recruitment and much more. Prior to her time at Ohio, Demake was an assistant coach at Wheaton College in Massachusetts from 2010-12. With Demake on staff the Lyons advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament Second Round in both 2010 and 2011. Demake got her start in coaching with the New England Futbol Club, helping to develop youth players aged six to 14 beginning in 2009. She worked with the club program until 2012 when she took the position at Ohio. A graduate of Worcester State University, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in 2010, Demake was a three-year student-athlete at Worcester State. A captain as a senior, she earned MASCAC All-Conference honors twice and led the Lancers to the MASCAC Championship and the Sweet 16 of the Division III NCAA Tournament in 2007. Demake played at the University of Hartford during her freshman campaign, helping to lead the Hawks to an America East Championship in 2006. Demake holds both a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) National Diploma from 2010, as well as an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma from 2011. Director of Athletics

Jeff Altier Director of Athletics 17th Year Jeff Altier, a 28-year veteran of the Stetson University athletic department, is in his 16th year as Director of Athletics. During his tenure, Altier has earned a reputation as an outstanding fundraiser and a leader with an eye on the future, and is noted for his active participation in the NCAA governance structure. Along with President Libby, he was integral in bringing football back to Stetson for the first time since 1956. The Hatters will play their first season in the fall of 2013. Coming with the return of football was the construction of a state-of-the-art field house for not only football, but also men’s and women’s soccer and the brand new women’s lacrosse team. The $6.7 million, 25,000 square foot facility was completed in August of 2012. Altier, captain of the nationally-ranked 1982 Hatter baseball team, earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stetson. Upon wrapping up his Stetson baseball career, he spent two years as a player/coach developing the sport in Perth, Australia. He then returned to Stetson as an assistant coach before being promoted to Ticket Manager, Director of Athletic Promotions, and then Associate Athletic Director. In these rolls, he spearheaded the department’s development efforts as well as oversaw athletic marketing and promotions, concessions and travel coordination. He was named Director of Athletics in 1996. Altier also served as Tournament Manager for the NCAA Division I Southeast First and Second Round Men’s basketball tournament hosted by Stetson in 1993 and 1996 at the Orlando Arena, and as Tournament Director for the 1999 and 2004 tournament. Stetson has taken great strides in the area of gender equity under Altier, increasing scholarships, participation opportunities and staffing for women’s athletics. The unprecedented success of the women’s tennis, golf, soccer, basketball and softball teams in conference competition during Altier’s tenure are evidence of his commitment to women’s athletics. In fact, under his direction Stetson’s women’s and men’s teams have won an impressive 15 conference championships. A hallmark of Altier’s professional career was the building of Stetson’s $4.5 million baseball facility, Melching Field at Conrad Park. Built in conjunction with the City of DeLand, Melching Field is regarded as one of the nation’s premiere college baseball facilities. Altier then turned his attention to construction of an on-campus softball facility, which broke ground in 2002 and was ready for competition in February of 2003. The Patricia Wilson Field has been named Collegiate Softball Field of the Year four times. He was also instrumental in securing new state-of-the-art field lighting for both the softball and soccer fields in 2005. Under his guidance, the Athletic Department has seen the addition of the new Wilson Athletic Center, a $ 1.5 million health and wellness facility for the use of Stetson student-athletes. Stetson athletics has continued to grow under Altier’s guidance. Three new sports have or will be added in the next year, with sand volleyball starting competition in the spring of 2012, women’s lacrosse in the spring of 2013 and the return of football in the fall of 2013. The program is also growing in terms of staffing and facilities, with construction currently under way on a facility that will house the football, lacrosse and both soccer programs, along with practice field for football and practice and game fields for soccer and lacrosse. Altier’s leadership has extended beyond campus, as he has taken on Atlantic Sun Conference leadership roles, chairing many committees and serving as conference vice-president. Additionally, he has served on the National Association of College Directors of Athletics Division IAAA board of directors, the NCAA A.E.C. Cabinet and is currently a member of the prestigious NCAA Leadership Council. Locally he has served as president of the DeLand Rotary Club, vice-president of the DeLand Sports Redevelopment Association, and is a graduate of Leadership DeLand and Leadership Orlando. He is currently a member of the board of directors of the Central Florida Sports Commission. Altier was honored as the West Volusia Sportsperson of the Year for 2004. In 2011 Altier was recognized by his peers in the National Association of Collegiate Director of Athletics as the Under Armour Southeast Region Division I Athletic Director of the Year. Facilities

Since 1974, the J. Ollie Edmunds Center has been home to Stetson men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball contests. The Hatter men’s basketball team defeated Marshall 73-58 in the inaugural Edmunds Center game on Dec. 5, 1974. In the 36 seasons since that time, the Hatters have amassed over 330 total victories in their home building. Maintaining a top-notch athletic facility is a continual process, and the work at the Edmunds Center has been at a pace to keep up with the development of the athletic program itself. Over the past several years, the Edmunds Center has received a number of physical modifications and equipment upgrades. The scoreboards, shot clocks, bench seating, illuminated media tables, floor design and lobby showcase have all recently been upgraded. In 2000, the maplewood floor was completely sanded and repainted, and new scoreboards were installed. In 2003, banners were hung in the Edmunds Center rafters for each member of the Basketball Hall of Fame. And in 2005, brand new bleachers were installed along the entire east end of the building. Eight modern locker rooms are housed in the Edmunds Center, among them the men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and volleyball locker rooms. The Edmunds Center houses coaches and staff offices. In addition, the complex contains the crew team workout facility, dressing rooms, the ticket office and an athletic training room. The Edmunds Center was home to the men’s 1991 and 1996 Trans America Athletic Conference Tournaments as well as the women’s tournament in 1997. It also served as training camp site for the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association in 1992 and 1993, and hosted the NCAA Volleyball Tournament First Round in 1996. Down the street is the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center, home of the Stetson men’s and women’s tennis programs. Located on the east-side of the DeLand campus, the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center was completed in late 1996. The state-of-the-art facility is named in honor of Mandy Marie Stoll who was the tennis team’s top player when she was killed in an automobile accident in April 1988 during her junior year. During her three years as a member of the Stetson tennis team, she set school records of 20 consecutive wins and 27 wins in one season. The facility includes six courts, with plans for six additional courts in the future, a kiosk, three gazebos, courtside bleachers and a new scoreboard. Three of the six courts have been named: one for Mary Estella Palmer McNamara, the late wife of SU trustee Dennis McNamara of Orlando and a Stetson graduate; one in honor of former Stetson tennis coach Vicky Pate, also a Stetson alumna; and one in memory of Mandy Stoll. The Mandy Stoll Tennis Center has served as the host location for four Atlantic Sun Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships. The Stetson softball team has played 10 seasons at Patricia Wilson Field with tremendous success. The Hatters won their first 18 games on their home field in 2003 and have a combined home record of 278124 (.692). The sparkling facility features spacious dugouts, multiple bullpen and batting cage areas, a state-of-the-art scoreboard, a brilliant lighting system for playing night games, and a concession area. A team field house and a press box were built in 2007-08. In 2010 Stetson hosted the A-Sun Tournament for the fourth year in a row. One of the most picturesque, fan-friendly stadiums in the nation, Melching Field at Conrad Park will enter its 15th season as the home of Stetson Baseball in 2013. At a cost of $4.5 million, Melching Field was the result of a joint effort between Stetson University, DeLand Sports Redevelopment Association and the City of DeLand. Built on the same site as old Conrad Park, Melching Field opened on Feb. 12, 1999. Hatter fans have flocked to Melching Field in record numbers. With more than half a million fans since the stadium opened in 1999, Stetson is often ranked nationally among college baseball attendance leaders. Melching Field features permanent seating for 2,500 spectators with grass berms holding approximately 500 additional fans. A full-service concessions area greets visitors upon their entrance to the park on Woodland Boulevard. The 2012 season marked the debut of a new high-tech scoreboard, which is located in left field and is equipped with a state-of-the-art message center and graphics board. The numerous golf courses in Florida provide the men’s and women’s golf teams with ample places to play. The Hatters host tournaments every year at the DeLand Country Club, Southridge Golf Club, and Victoria Hills Golf Club. Also, the cross country teams host a meet every October at the Sperling Sports Complex, and the crew team practices and competes at nearby Lake Beresford.
