2013 SEASON IN REVIEW Owning one of the best one-year turnarounds in the nation, the 2013 Stetson volleyball season will go down as one of the finest in program history. During the season the Hatters broke records, reached milestones, earned awards, and accomplished feats the program had not seen for years. H . ere is a look back at Stetson’s historic season: Team accomplishments Stetson was breaking new ground right off the bat as the team won its season-opener for the first time since 2004. The Hatters soon compiled their first five-match win streak since 1988, which included a sweep of the Stetson Westin Classic at the Edmunds Center. Later the Hatters produced their first seven-match win streak since 1986, resulting in the team’s best 18-game start in school history (13-5). The team also got off to a great start in Atlantic Sun play with five-set victories over UNF and Jacksonville, and four-set victories over Mercer and Kennesaw State. With a 4-0 league record the Hatters claimed sole possession of first place in the A-Sun on Sept. 28. Stetson also started the year 10-0 at home. As the season progressed the Hatters continued to pick up conference victories. Then on Nov. 2, Stetson defeated Florida Gulf Coast 3-1 on the road to clinch the program’s first postseason berth in 18 years. The Hatters would later fall to FGCU in the Atlantic Sun quarterfinals, finishing the season with a record of 18-16, overall and 9-9 in A-Sun matches. The 18 wins was the most for the In 2013, Stetson produced its highest win total in 25 years and qualified for postseason play for the first time program since 1988, and the nine conference wins marked a new school record. since 1995. Individual Honors Senior Kaley Melville, one of just three players in the league to record over 400 kills and 300 digs, earned Atlantic Sun Second Team AllConference honors. It was the first time a Stetson player had recorded first or second-team accolades since 2004. Tiffany Creamer earned allfreshman team honors after being selected four times as the league’s Freshman of the Week during the regular season. Ellen Hawks earned the league’s Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 9, and Melville was named A-Sun Player of the Week on Sept. 23. Records Broken Stetson set new team records in the rally-scoring era for most kills (1588), assists (1487), digs (1849), and blocks (225.5). Melville set the new single-season kills record in the rally-scoring era (417), Kayla Weller set the all-time single-season assists record (1269), and Ellen Hawks set the single-season blocks record in the rally-scoring era (121). Melville also set the single-match kills record in the rally-scoring era (28 vs. UNF on Sept. 20), and Alexa Drost tied the single-match digs record in the rally-scoring era (32 at FGCU, Nov. 2). Thank You Seniors The Hatters owed a lot of the season’s success to the on-the-court play and behind-the-scenes leadership of senior co-captains Melville and Hawks. The pair spent countless hours over the summer preparing for the season and facilitating team chemistry during preseason training. Neither Melville nor Hawks missed a single-match during their careers, a total of 123 contests overall. Melville finished her career second in school history in kills (1282), third in digs (1203), and the only Hatter to ever surpass both 1200 kills and 1200 digs in a career. Hawks, meanwhile, in her very last match, reached the 400 blocks total for her career, the highest total in school history in the rally scoring era, and the fourth-highest total in Atlantic Sun history. Her .229 attack percentage also placed among the top 10 players in school history. Freshmen Accolades Stetson’s freshmen class provided a great deal of production in 2013, none more so than Creamer. The Newnan, Ga. native ranked second on the team and second among all A-Sun freshmen in kills (358) and kills-per-set (2.89). She was selected as the league’s Freshman of the Week four times during the season, and earned Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team honors following the season. Madison Akins also had some big matches for the Hatters, including double-digit kills vs. Idaho, Providence, Kennesaw, and Upstate, plus 19 digs against UNF. Akins earned all-tournament team honors at the Stetson Westin Classic.

THIS IS ... THE ATLANTIC SUN CONFERENCE For 35 years, the Atlantic Sun Conference has supported its member institutions in providing intercollegiate athletics programs committed to Building Winners for Life. The A-Sun accomplishes this mission by maintaining the highest standards in academic and athletic achievement, creating a balance between student and athlete. Adding an emphasis on sportsmanship in the competitive arena and fostering leadership opportunities through community service, the A-Sun, its member institutions and its studentathletes aim for an overall educational experience that is successful in Building Winners for Life.

BUILDING

WINNERS

The student-athletes of the A-Sun consistently achieve academic accolades on a national level ...

... while performing at a high level in the competitive arena ...

• Along with a myriad of sport-specific honors, four institutions and nine sports set record highs in the 2013-14 A-Sun AllAcademic honors. More than 64 percent of the studentathletes in the A-Sun posted a 3.0 grade point average or better and four institutions recorded highs during the 201314 academic year, including the 78 percent of Lipscomb student-athletes honored as the Bisons claim this year’s top honor.

• A conference record of four men’s basketball teams earned invitations to postseason play with Mercer in the NCAA, FGCU in the NIT while ETSU and USC Upstate both earned spots in the CIT. • With four women’s basketball teams also making it to postseason play for the second-straight year, the A-Sun placed eight teams in postseason for the first time in conference history.

• For the fifth-consecutive year more than 60 percent of the A-Sun’s teams were honored, a first for the conference. Also for the second straight year at least three institutions eclipsed the 70 percent mark for All-Academic selections and also recorded new highs in their final percentages of student-athletes honored academically.

• Kennesaw State became only the second team in A-Sun history to reach the Super Regional Round.

• In addition to the institutional highs, a total of nine sports also recorded percentage highs and five sports also turned in totals of at least 80 percent of the teams recording a 3.0 GPA or better.

• Men’s golf also made A-Sun history as a record-setting four teams advanced to the NCAA Regionals . • The 18 MLB Draft selections of A-Sun student-athletes are tied with last year’s total, but the five picks within the first seven rounds are most in conference history.

• History was made as three A-Sun teams entered the NCAA Softball Regionals as all three squads; Lipscomb, USC Upstate and Stetson captured wins in the postseason.

FOR LIFE! ...and at the same time preparing themselves to become valuable members of their community. • A total of 84 A-Sun teams met or exceeded the most recent fouryear Division I APR of 974. While all exceeded the standard APR multi-year average of 900, even when using the projected future APR multi-year standard of 930, 98 percent of the 155 A-Sun teams in the 2011-12 measure posted above the average. • The ninth annual Atlantic Sun Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) fundraising competition raised more than $56,000 to benefit charities selected by the SAAC at each of the 10 A-Sun institutions. The total shatters the previous high mark of 22,209.68, set just last year. • Six Atlantic Sun Conference member institutions were named to the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, two with distinction. That number places the A-Sun among the top half of Division I conferences, as only 12 of 31 conferences had six or more schools recognized. • Since opening in 1997, Florida Gulf Coast University has amassed more than one million service-learning hours and earned national recognition for its program.

Headquartered in Macon, Ga., the A-Sun footprint reaches into six of the top media markets in the Southeast. The A-Sun includes a blend of the most prestigious and dynamic private and public institutions in the region: Florida Gulf Coast University, Jacksonville University, Kennesaw State University, Lipscomb University, University of North Florida, Northern Kentucky University, University of South Carolina Upstate and Stetson University.

Three new sports have recently been added - sand volleyball started competition in the spring of 2012, while women’s lacrosse will start in the spring of 2013 and football will return in the

fall of 2013. The program is also growing in terms of staffing and facilities, with construction complete on the $6.7 million, 25,000 square-foot Athletic Training Center that houses offices, locker rooms, and sports medicine facilities for the football, women’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s soccer programs.
