Hatters Looking to Be More Offensive in 2015

Patrick Mazeika Since 1996, when college baseball was at the leading edge of an offensive explosion, the Stetson baseball program has produced 13 seasons in which the Hatters have had a team batting average in excess of .300. From 1997 until the bats were significantly deadened in 2011, the Hatters averaged more than 50 home runs per season while scoring more than 7.0 runs per game. The result was an average of more than 36 wins per season and 10 NCAA Regional appearances. Hatters head coach Pete Dunn is determined to see his team return to that era of offensive production in 2015. The combination of new baseballs in the game this year – balls with lower seams that are projected to travel 20 feet farther when hit well – and an influx of talent from area junior colleges, gives Dunn optimism. “Our ballpark (Melching Field) plays big,” Dunn said. “It is not big by dimension, but it plays big. We have not been hitting many home runs over the last few years. This fall, we hit a number of home runs. I would like to think that is based on several reasons.”

HATTERS EXTRA

Dunn cites the Hatters’ strength and conditioning program as a major contributing factor. “We have some pretty strong guys,” Dunn said. “The guys we have that came in are two years more mature than freshmen, and they are strong. “Our weight training program, with coach Brad Lokey, has made our kids bigger, faster and stronger than they have ever been. The new weight room and weight program they are on, you can just see it.” Dunn is quick to point out that any improvement in offense this season will not mark a return to the game of the early 2000s when scores of 22-19 were common. But he said the games will be more offensive in nature, which is something college baseball fans want to see. “Fans like to see guys run the bases and see the ball leave the ballpark,” Dunn said. “There was concern nationally that there were not enough home runs being hit at the College World Series, and that is our biggest stage. We’ll see, but I think the

new baseballs are going to translate into more offense this year.” For the Hatters, an increase in offensive production will come from a combination of returning veteran players as well as additions to the squad from the juniorcollege ranks. “I don’t know that the amount of newcomers or JUCO guys is going to be a yearly occurrence for us,” Dunn said. “We just felt, coming off last year, we had some solid players returning, but we needed some help right away. “I feel like we really improved our team but, just because you bring JUCO players in, it doesn’t guarantee an immediate turnaround.” Stetson will have 14 first-year players on the roster this year, including eight from the junior-college ranks. All eight of those players factor prominently into the Hatters’ plans for the coming season. For Dunn, fall practice was especially important this year because of the need to blend all of those new players with a corps of returners who are established as regular contributors to the program.

HATTERS EXTRA

“With this club – especially after going through the fall – we have been able to blend the returning guys with the new players,” Dunn said. “We have a good mix. “Our returning players have welcomed with open arms the new guys, and vice versa. I am really happy, based on the fall, with where we are from that standpoint.” Perhaps helping with the integration of the newest team members is the fact that, for the first time, the Stetson coaches selected captains before the players even reported to campus for the start of school in August. “We took a different approach in that we named Josh Powers and Tyler Bocock as captains at the beginning of the fall,” Dunn said. “In the past, we would elect captains at the end of the fall but, the problem is we went half an academic year with practice without captains. We decided we wanted to start from day one, in our initial meeting, with captains in place.” The Hatters will play 35 home games in 2015, including contests vs. Florida, Florida State, and Michigan.

Sand Volleyball Season Preview

Although the Stetson University sand volleyball team will have to wait until March 6 to begin its spring schedule, the team is hard at work training and preparing for the upcoming 2015 season. Second-year head coach Kristina Hernandez has the difficult task of determining which pairs have the best chemistry and which seeds give the Hatters the best chance to compete for another Atlantic Sun Championship. “It’s kind of a chess match right now, especially when you have 10 seniors in a group where pretty much everybody is coming back,” Hernandez said. “It’s been interesting, but we still have a ways to go.” Hernandez says the competition in practice has been outstanding, and the fact that the team has so many veterans has translated to everyone on the team having shared goals. “The level of drive that they have right now is really high,” Hernandez said. “They are functioning like a well-oiled machine because they understand what they want. They are all on the same page, which is something as a head coach that is rare.

HATTERS EXTRA

I feel as a group, regardless of what happens with the pairings, they all want the same exact thing.” Stetson will enter the season with a No. 13 national ranking by DiG Volleyball magazine. The Hatters are the highestranked conference team in the preseason poll, one spot ahead of UNF at No. 14. “I think last year we had tunnel vision on winning conference,” Hernandez said. “Now with getting some accolades and getting some confirmations from outside of that, they have elevated their goals for themselves and their expectations without it coming from us. They want more for themselves and the program. It says a lot.” Among teams in the Southeast, the Hatters rank fourth behind No. 2 Florida State, No. 9 Florida International, and No. 11 Georgia State. Stetson will face all three of those teams this season. “I think that was something we talked about as a team at the end of last year,” Hernandez said. “We had a really great season in terms of them wanting to be ranked and really be seen on more of a

national stage. The general consensus was we really have to put ourselves out there and challenge ourselves in terms of the schedule. We have to compete, especially with the better teams in the Southeast region.” The Hatters will play 20 dual matches in 2015, including seven matches against teams ranked in the preseason poll. Stetson will host Florida Atlantic, Florida International, and Florida State in the opening weekend, Mar. 6-7, during the Stetson Spring Break Invitational. The Hatters will also host Webber on March 14, Georgia Tech on March 15, Eckerd on March 18, UNF on April 1, and Mercer on April 4. The team will play at the College of Charleston Sand Tournament on March 28-29. The annual Fiesta on Siesta Key takes place April 11-12. Stetson will look to defend its Atlantic Sun title on April 17-18 in Estero, Florida. The conference champion will advance to the AVCA National Collegiate Championship in Gulf Shores, Alabama, a trip the Hatters made as league champions in 2014.

HATTERS EXTRA

Kaylee Anderson This will be the last season for the AVCA Championship, however. In 2016, sand volleyball will have an official NCAA Championship as 40 institutions now sponsor the sport. The Atlantic Sun is still expected to have an automatic bid to the national championship, which will feature eight teams. Stetson will also enjoy an improved facility on campus this season. Crews are busy constructing a pavilion that will house team locker rooms and restrooms, heated showers, and a sheltered area for inclement weather. “It will be really nice because it will have a nice ‘Home of Stetson Sand Volleyball’ displayed on the front of that building,” Hernandez said. “I think from a competitive standpoint, and from a recruiting standpoint, and just in general as a program, it’s going to be a really nice facility for us. The girls are excited to have their own spot where they can keep their stuff, have a locker room and have all that good stuff.”

Hatters Load Up on Linemen in 2015 Class Roger Hughes

Stetson football coach Roger Hughes knew going into his fourth recruiting season with the Hatters that the focus of his efforts had to be on the line of scrimmage. That focus paid off on Feb. 5 when the Hatters received signed Institutional Letters of Intent from 16 linemen in a class of 37 signees. The Stetson coaches expect to receive as many as nine more signed letters before the end of the spring signing period. “We are happy,” Hughes said. “We feel that we are adding quality depth, and we hope that, within a year or two, some of these guys will be competing for starting roles.” The focus on linemen, on both sides of the ball, comes from both a lack of size and depth on the current Hatters roster, which includes just eight defensive linemen and 10 on the offensive side. “We felt like the biggest mismatches we had last year were in the offensive and defensive lines,” Hughes said. “Even in the games we won, we got physically

HATTERS EXTRA

handled at times. We are trying to attack that problem in two ways. First, we are trying to bring in better people with this freshman class and, second, we have put a major emphasis on our strength and conditioning program.” Another area of focus for Stetson was at cornerback, where the Hatters were very thin last year. Three of the players who signed on Feb. 5 are corners, and there may be as many as two more to sign this year. “The positions that make the most money in the NFL are corners and defensive ends,” Hughes said. “I think we helped ourselves at defensive end, but the guys we have gotten are going to need time to develop. In this profession, you don’t get a lot of time.” The rest of the players signed were spread across multiple positions. Stetson signed four outside linebackers (some who could move to defensive end), four running backs and four receivers. The Hatters also inked a pair of quarterbacks, a long snapper and a tight end.

Stetson’s Divine Miracle Divine Myles

Divine Miracle Myles is his given name, and he most certainly earned it. He earned it because he wasn’t supposed to live. His mother’s pregnancy was wrought with complications. Doctors were so certain he was going to be stillborn they almost threw him away after he was delivered. But the Stetson freshman – and a higher power – had other ideas. Myles’ mother, Tonya, was 20 years old when she was pregnant with Divine. It was a difficult pregnancy, and Tonya was told by her physicians her son would likely be stillborn. Their tests indicated she wouldn’t carry him to full term. They said Divine didn’t have a nose or a mouth, that his eyes, lungs and heart weren’t developed. Doctors also cautioned that if he survived, he would be mentally retarded, without any motor skills of any kind, and he would be dependent upon his family for the rest of his life.

HATTERS EXTRA

On Feb. 25, 1996, at just 24 weeks, Tonya went into labor. Divine was delivered via cesarean section, and when he was removed from his mother’s womb, Divine stunned them all. “On the day I was born, I was still in the amniotic sac, and they were about to dispose of me,” said Myles. “But God intervened, and I kicked the bag open and began crying and screaming. When I was born, I was whole. I was a healthy baby.” Shocked at what they were seeing, nurses immediately asked the doctor to place a breathing tube in the newborn. But the delivery doctor resisted and instead told nurses to check Divine’s Apgar score, a procedure used to assess the health of a newborn child. Divine tested at the top of the chart. Despite what his family called a miracle birth, doctors believed Divine still had a

10

Stetson’s Divine Miracle Divine Myles

long road of recovery ahead of him. They insisted he be placed into a series of courses and classes designed to stimulate him both physically and mentally. For three years, Divine attended those classes until his mother decided he didn’t need them anymore. “I was 2 or 3 years old when I was in those classes, and I was ahead of all of the other kids,” he said. “The doctors kept telling her I needed to go to the classes. But my mom said I was fine, and she stopped taking me. She continued to work with me at home. The only effect I’ve had from any of this is that I had stiff bones as a child, but I grew out of that.” It isn’t hard to imagine that the series of events immediately before and after his birth have had a profound impact on Divine. A deeply religious young man, Divine believes the faith that he and his family hold so dear had a lot to do with not only his initial survival, but how he’s thrived as well.

HATTERS EXTRA

“We talk about it a lot because it’s a big testimony in my life,” he said. “My mom reminds me every so often how blessed I am, and that God has a purpose for me and has great things in store for me. That’s why my middle name is Miracle. No man on Earth could get me through this. It was all God.” Myles went on to lead a perfectly normal childhood and developed into one of Alabama’s top prep players at Blount High School, helping lead the Leopards to a 27-4 record and runner-up finish in the 2014 Alabama 6A state tournament. With the Hatters, Myles has started all but one game, and ranks among Atlantic Sun Conference leaders in assists while also checking in as Stetson’s second-leading scorer. And while every student-athlete has their share of challenges, Myles isn’t likely to be fazed by a hostile crowd or a larger opponent. He’s already faced down the biggest challenge of his life… and it’s a Miracle he came out on top.

Courtney Brandt Focused On Senior Season Courtney Brandt

Senior Courtney Brandt has always been a key contributor to the Stetson softball pitching staff. This year, however, she will have the opportunity to be the centerpiece of the rotation. “Courtney worked really hard throughout the summer and fall,” Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said. “She is really on top of her game right now. I think if she focuses on her control and lets her defense do the work, she will have a great season.” The Hatter right-hander holds a career mark of 21-21 through her first three seasons. In 2014, however, Brandt pitched just 39 innings as seniors Meredith Owen and Sarah Read handled a majority of the pitching duties. As the starting left fielder, Brandt spent most of her time in practice working on her offense and defense. “Last year, pitching wasn’t my primary role, so it wasn’t something I was focused on in practice, but now it is something I need to take my time to do,” Brandt said. “I need to focus more on it, and I need to practice more on it. The more I practice, the better I am going to get.”

HATTERS EXTRA

As the 2015 season gets underway, Brandt says she has been concentrating more on her spins and getting her pitches to move. Her goal is not to compile a ton of strikeouts, but to keep hitters off-balance and generate a lot of pop flies and ground balls. “In past years, I was trying to get the speed in there, and I wasn’t as focused as much on the spins,” Brandt said. “This year, I have found a balance where I can still throw fast but still put more spin on it. I am hoping it is going to be more effective this year, so we will see how it works out.” Griffin said that keeping everyone healthy, especially the pitchers, will be a major key to the Hatters’ success this season. Brandt, meanwhile, says she is looking forward to a memorable senior season. “This is it for me. It’s my senior year. It’s all or nothing. It’s the last time I am going to play softball. I want to go out, enjoy it, and do the best I can.”

Big Things in Store for Demi Meza Demi Meza

Each season she has played at Stetson, Demi Meza has gotten better ... and better ... and better. Her batting average has risen from .254 as a freshman to .279 as a sophomore to .333 as a junior. Her power numbers have also taken off, from four doubles and four home runs as a freshman to 23 doubles and 20 home runs in the past two seasons combined. Her run totals, RBI totals, and slugging percentage have also steadily increased. “Demi came to Stetson as a very good player, and since then she has gotten stronger, more confident, a real leader on and off the field,” Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said. The softball community has noticed as well, as Meza was honored last season with second team all-conference and third team all-region honors. Meza, now a senior, attributes much of her improvement as a hitter to one thing in particular. “As a freshman, I wasn’t a very good outside hitter,” Meza said. “Coach Griffin told me I needed to work on it. I worked a lot with all the coaches during practice.

HATTERS EXTRA

Even in the offseason, I worked on it a lot at home. Now I am a completely different player than I was. I can hit a bunch backside. It has completely helped my game, plus it has helped my team as well.” Meza has also proved to be a valuable commodity on the infield, where she has played third base, shortstop, and second base in each of her first three seasons. With the entire infield returning, Meza will likely get to remain at second base for the second year in a row. “I like being versatile and going to different places,” Meza said. “The right side (of the infield) is completely different than the left, but I like it a lot more. My team knows I can move wherever I’m needed.” Meza says she is striving toward being more of an outspoken leader and being more consistent at the plate. Griffin says Meza is sure to be a huge key to the Hatters’ offensive production. “She is a super softball player and a tremendous student, but as a person she is just a pleasure to be around,” Griffin said. “She is always picking her teammates up, and her coaches as well.”

Sharp Named co-Student-Athlete of the Month Jama Sharp

Stetson University women’s basketball senior guard Jama Sharp is the Stetson University co-Student-Athlete of the Month for January. Sharp has not missed a single game since first donning the uniform her freshman year. She has received a multitude of athletic and academic accolades in her four years, and etched her name in the record books. A Sport Business major from Mooresville, Indiana, who boasts a 3.5 grade-point average, Sharp won’t be completely hanging up her shoes after the 2014-15 season. She hopes to be a coach one day and has her sights on the highest level of collegiate play possible. Dr. Matt Wilson, an associate professor of sport business and a member of the university’s Athletics Committee, noted the strong connection between Jama’s course work and her intended career path. “In today’s marketplace, coaches have to be able to wear multiple hats,” said Wilson. “They use sales techniques when selling their program to their recruits and

HATTERS EXTRA

communities. They have to be able to communicate their vision; they have to be able to network and build contacts throughout recruiting and the coaching profession.” Instructor of sport business and former general counsel and deputy commissioner at the LPGA, Elizabeth Galloway worked with Jama both in the classroom and as a part of an internship course. “When I observed Jama with others, it’s clear she makes a good impression,” said Galloway. “Part of that is she’s a very good listener, but she also inspires confidence in others. I think a big part of that comes from being a student-athlete. She has gained confidence from her sport, and she can now project that same confidence in the workplace.” It was also recently announced that Jama is a finalist for the Senior CLASS award, an honor given to 30 male and 30 female Division I college basketball players nationwide who exhibit excellence in four categories: community, classroom, character and competition.

Sikora Named co-Student-Athlete of the Month Kyle Sikora

Stetson University men’s basketball graduate student Kyle Sikora is the Stetson University co-Student-Athlete of the Month for January. Sikora has been a very busy man since first stepping onto campus three years ago. Sikora is currently a part of the accelerated Master of Business Administration program, a 12-month course of study he began in the summer of 2014 and will complete in May 2015. While balancing a full graduate course load and a long competitive season, Sikora has maintained a 3.55 grade-point average. A transfer from Oakland University in Michigan, Sikora has only been with the Hatters for two seasons. However, he has risen as a leader on the team due to his ability to make sacrifices, manage his time, and look toward the future. Associate Professor of Management Dr. John Tichenor noted that Kyle’s work ethic was evident right away. “Kyle began his studies at Stetson in a summer session in which the class is pretty intense – we covered a lot of

HATTERS EXTRA

material in each class,” said Tichenor. “It was clear from the beginning of class that Kyle was going to stay on top of his work and not fall behind.” Tichenor also pointed to a natural relationship between the course work in this program and skills necessary once Sikora has completed his time as a Hatter. “From basketball practices to travel schedules, workouts, and course work, Kyle must balance many priorities,” he continued. “This will be an invaluable asset in his business career.” Stetson head coach Corey Williams has certainly witnessed Kyle’s work ethic and ability to manage his time firsthand. “He puts the time in to make sure he’s successful. He is always reading, always studying; he always has his books with him,” Williams said. “He is determined to be a high-level student-athlete. Everyone recognizes him as someone who is successful academically, and that is one of the reasons his voice really matters to this team.”
