The 2013 Coaching Staff Roger Hughes Head Coach Career: 47-52 Seasons: 10 Crawford, Neb. Doane College, 1982 Roger Hughes leads Stetson Football into its re-inauguration in 2013, 57 years after the Hatters last took to the gridiron. Hughes came to Stetson after 10 seasons as head coach at Princeton, where he won the 2006 Ivy League championship and was the only coach in the history of Ivy League football to improve his team’s win total by two games in three consecutive seasons. He is one of only five men to have served as head coach of Princeton football for at least a decade. That list includes a trio of College Football Hall of Famers: Bill Roper (1910-11, 1919-30), Charlie Caldwell (1945-56) and Dick Colman (1957-68). Hughes was an Eddie Robinson Award finalist for Coach of the Year honors in 2006, after leading a Princeton squad that was picked to finish sixth in the preseason media poll to a 9-1 record and the Ivy League title. The nine wins were the most at Princeton since the Colman-led 1964 team and the Ivy League title was the first for the Tigers in more than a decade. Even with an entirely new offensive line, his offense finished first in the Ivy League in both passing yards and total yards in 2006, and his senior quarterback, Jeff Terrell, became Princeton’s first Bushnell Cup winner (Ivy League Player of the Year) since 1995, when current Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett won the award. The 2006 Ivy League title followed a brilliant 2005 season, when the Tigers earned their first seven-win campaign since 1995. Hughes also had significant success helping his players move to the next level. In 2006 alone, four Tigers signed with NFL teams. At Princeton, Hughes worked with the quarterbacks, as he does at Stetson, and his success is evident in the Tigers record books.
Under his tutelage, three quarterbacks placed in the top six in all-time passing at Princeton. Hughes was named head coach at Princeton in January 2000, and he took a team starting 10 freshmen and sophomores to a 3-7 record in his first season. Along the way Princeton improved its Ivy League record by two games, to 3-4, and defeated a pair of 7-3 teams, Brown and Yale. Hughes coached 74 All-Ivy League players, including 24 first-team selections, and several All-America selections. He also coached nine District II Academic All-Americas, three Roper Trophy winners for the top senior male athlete at Princeton and two of the four winners of the 2000 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award. During the 2002 season, running back Cameron Atkinson was one of 14 overall winners of the National Scholar-Athlete Scholarship, and he was the lone winner from the Ivy League. Hughes arrived at Princeton after eight years as offensive coordinator at Dartmouth, where he led an offense that propelled the Big Green to a 22-game winning streak and two Ivy League championships. While at Dartmouth, he helped develop Jay Fiedler into an NFL quarterback.

Hughes helped the Big Green to Ivy League championships in 1992 and 1996. He coached players who set 14 of the top 15 school single-game passing and total yardage records, as well as four of the top five single-season totals. The 1996 team went 10-0, one of four teams in league history to do so. Born in Crawford, Nebraska, on September 4, 1960, Hughes played football (tight end) and golf at Doane College, graduating in 1982. He moved on to the University of Nebraska as a graduate assistant, helping coach the Cornhuskers to the 1984 Sugar Bowl and 1985 Fiesta Bowl while earning his Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology in 1987. His career then took him to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where as running backs coach he helped his team to a conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals. His next stop was Cameron University in Lawton, Okla., where he spent three years as offensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coach. While at Cameron he also worked with the quarterbacks and the offensive line before leaving in 1992 to join John Lyons’ staff at Dartmouth. Hughes and his wife Laura have one daughter, Maddison.

Atif Austin was hired as the Hatters running backs coach on August 1, 2013. A native of Tampa, Fla., Austin spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Northern Iowa after completing a graduate assistant position at Southwest Minnesota State. He coached running backs at UNI. A graduate of Iowa State University, Austin was a four-year varsity letterman and a fouryear starter from 1999-2002. The Cyclones participated in the 2001 Independence Bowl and the 2002 Humanitarian Bowl. He received Big 12 honorable mention honors in 2001 and was given the Reuben J. Miller Award his senior year, designated for the player whose conduct on and off the field brings honor to ISU. Austin played at Tarpon Springs High School in Tampa as a tailback, quarterback, cornerback and wide receiver and was voted Most Valuable Player his senior year. He also earned letters in wrestling and track and field. He returned to his alma mater as head coach in 2010, doubling as offensive coordinator. Austin graduated from ISU in 2003 with a B.A. in Sociology and received his masters in Leadership and Education from Southern Minnesota in 2005.
Nolan Behrns joined Stetson as Director of Football Operations in August 2011. Behrns plans, coordinates and supervises all aspects of the administrative and operational activities of the football program, as well as any other duties assigned by Coach Hughes. Behrns got his start in football while an undergraduate at Nebraska-Omaha from 200710, serving as an offensive student assistant coach. He worked with the wide receivers and the defensive scout team as well as taking responsibility for all video operations and communications with UNO sports information. In the spring of 2010, Behrns also served as the tight ends coach for nearby Midland Lutheran College. Upon graduation from UNO in August 2010, he officially joined his alma mater as Director of Football Operations, coordinating recruiting, team travel, camps/clinics and life skills development among other duties for the Mavericks. When Nebraska-Omaha announced the decision to discontinue its football program in the spring of 2011, Behrns moved into the professional ranks as Assistant Director of Football Operations for the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL. He assisted with team travel, housing, personnel transactions and other duties for Head Coach Jeff Jagodzinski’s squad.
Dennis Danielson joined the Hatters coaching staff fresh off a long career as a coach and scout in the numerous American football leagues that have blossomed across Europe. As of this March, 2012, there were more than 600 professional or semi-pro teams playing American football in 28 European countries. Most recently he has worked as defensive line coach with the Swarco Raiders in Austria, helping the team to the Austrian title and a berth in the Eurobowl. Prior to that he was with the NFL’s International Player Development in London, England. His NFL Europe coaching experience also includes stops with the London Monarchs (1991-92), England Monarchs (1997-98) and Berlin Thunder (1999-2000). While Danielson has extensive experience coaching in Europe, he got his start coaching high school football. After several stops as a high school assistant coach, he was the defensive coordinator at Groves High School in Savannah, Ga., when a young defensive back named Brian Young played for him. His collegiate coaching career started at Willamette University in 1977 and has included stops at Wayne State (1982-88), the University of South Carolina (1990), Wingate University (1994-98) Liberty University (2000-02) and Southwest Missouri State (2003-04). A native of Barstow, Calif., Danielson is a graduate of Willamette University and received his Master’s from Wayne State.

After more than two decades as a head coach, Tim Keating joined the Stetson football staff as receivers coach. Keating ended his almost two decade run as the most successful coach in McDaniel College history in 2011. His 110-83-3 mark at the college is 50 wins better than the second most successful coach in school history. Keating’s teams won seven Centennial Conference titles during his career. The Green Terror ran off 33 straight conference wins en route to the handful of those championships. He also led the squad to five straight appearances in the NCAA playoffs between 1997 and 2001. For his efforts, Keating was named the Division III Coach of the Year by American Football Quarterly magazine following a 10-1 season in 1997. Prior to his stint at McDaniel, Keating orchestrated the turnaround of the Wesley College program in 1988. He inherited a club with a two-year mark of 0-17, then steadily improved the program to a 9-2 mark over five seasons. A native of Amherst, N.Y., Keating played football at Bethany College (W.Va.), where he picked up his 100th career win as a head coach in 2002. He graduated in 1975 with a degree in communications. Keating broke into the collegiate coaching ranks with a pair of two-year stints as an assistant at Georgetown (1978-79) and DePauw (1980-81). Keating followed DePauw coach Jerry Berndt to the University of Pennsylvania (1982-85), where he helped construct a dynasty that dominated the Ivy League. He then moved to Rice University for the 1986 and 1987 seasons. Keating and his wife, Claudia, have one son, Matt, who was a four-year attackman on the Green Terror lacrosse team while their daughter, Hillary, also earned a bachelors from McDaniel in 2009.
Eric Kornhauser in a native Floridian who returned to his home turf after spending one seasons as an assistant coach at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. During the 2011 season, his first as a collegiate coach, he oversaw the running backs and assisted with special teams. Prior to his year in New York, the Coral Springs, Fla., native played in the Pioneer Football League at Jacksonville University. He was named to the PFL Academic Honor Roll four times while earning honorable mention All-Conference as a member of the 2008 PFL champion JU Dolphins. During his playing career he contributed on offense, defense and special teams. Following his playing career, Kornhauser stayed on JU to help coach, working with the running backs and special teams.
Patrick Saporito came to Stetson from Alderson-Broaddus College and coaches the Hatters’ defensive backs along with defensive coordinator Brian Young. Prior to spending the 2011 season coaching receivers at Alderson-Broaddus, Saporito coached receivers and tight ends at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y., in 2010. Saporito’s other college coaching stops have included serving as running backs coach at SUNY-Maritime in the Bronx and coaching receivers at the University of Charleston (WV) in 2009. Saporito played wide receiver at Western New Mexico University. A native of Larchmont, N.Y., where he attended Mamaroneck High School, Saporito earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Iona College in 2006.

Terry Tilghman was named to the Stetson coaching staff on April 30, 2012. Tilghman came to Stetson after serving for five seasons as offensive line coach at Kent State University in Ohio where he worked for head coach Doug Martin. Before his stint at Kent State, Tilghman spent three seasons as offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of North Alabama. A native of Mesquite, Texas, Tilghman played collegiately at East Carolina University where he was named to the All-South Independent team in 1994 while also garnering Outstanding Senior honors. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater in 1995 and stayed there as an assistant coach through the 2002 season. In Tilghman’s first season at Kent State, the Golden Flashes improved from the bottom of the Mid-American Conference in rushing offense in 2005 to third in 2006. The Golden Flashes had the league’s second-best rushing team in 2007 and was first in the MAC, and 11th nationally, in 2008. At KSU, tackle Augustus Parrish was a twotime second-team All-MAC selection and center Chris Anzevino was named to the 2010 Rimington Trophy Preseason Watch List. During his time at UNA, where he coached for current Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Mark Hudspeth, he helped mentor the Lions’ record-setting offense. In 2005 UNA broke 26 school records while averaging more than 411 yards and 36 points per game. In his first season at UNA he helped UNA produce three all-conference linemen while the Lions offense set 31 school records. During his tenure as an assistant at ECU, where he coached for Steve Logan, he served at various times as offensive line coach, tight ends coach, recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. He helped to send five players on to the National Football League and was a part of three bowl teams. Tilghman received his degree in exercise/ sports science from East Carolina in 1995. He and his wife, Jennifer, also a native of Mesquite, Texas, have two sons, Terry II (22) and Jacob (16), and a daughter, Jordan (19). Terry II is a sophomore at the United States Air Force Academy and Jordan is enrolled at Stetson and works as an assistant in the football equipment room.
Brandon Wright joined the Stetson staff as linebackers coach after spending the previous two seasons coaching defensive backs at Franklin College. He started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Ridge View High School in Columbia, S.C. Wright played for two years at Newberry College before suffering a career-ending shoulder injury. Afterward, he contributed to the football team with quality control responsibilities. He graduated from Newberry in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a minor in sociology. He then graduated from Strayer University with a master’s of business administration degree.
Brian Young joined the Stetson coaching staff from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., in January 2012. He served as defensive backs coach for two seasons with the Big Red, but moved into the role of defensive coordinator for the Hatters. Young is a native of Savannah, Ga., and a product of Georgia Southern University where he played defensive back and earned a B.A. in Parks and Recreation Administration in 1997. He completed requirements for his Master’s Degree in Kinesiology from Georgia Southern in 2012. Young has a long and distinguished career as a football coach at multiple levels. He has coached professional players for several arena teams and also worked with the Buffalo Bills as a training camp assistant. He also had a successful tenure as a high school football and basketball coach. Since 2005 he has primarily focused on coaching in the collegiate ranks. He spent five seasons on the coaching staff at Mississippi College, starting as secondary coach and special teams coordinator before adding the titles of recruiting coordinator and, finally, defensive coordinator. During his tenure at Mississippi College, which plays in NCAA Division III, he helped develop a pair of All-Conference defensive backs and also helped guide the team to a conference title. He moved on to Cornell in 2010, helping the Big Red rank second in the Ivy League in pass defense that year and developing a pair of second team All-Conference performers over two seasons. Prior to his coaching career, Young spent the 2000 and 2001 seasons playing in arena football, first for the Bismarck (N.D.) Blaze and then for the Duluth (Minn.) Lumberjacks. His coaching career started with the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League and includes a tenure as a high school basketball coach where he led Savannah High School to a 32-2 record and a state runner-up finish.

Stetson Football Through The Years The first organized football game in the state of Florida was an intramural contest at Stetson University on Thanksgiving Day in 1894. One team, named after university president John Forbes and coached by C.B. Rosa, defeated the “Stetson” team, coached by Harvey MacQuiston of the English department. The field was created by removing some pine trees in the spot where the Cummings Gymnasium was later built. Due to the uneven ground, one team had to run uphill each quarter. The game attracted considerable attention and viewers came from as far as Daytona. After several games, local churchmen were shocked by the brutality of the game, which seemed antichristian. This led to a three-year suspension of football at Stetson. On Thanksgiving Day in 1901, football made its return. Stetson met the Florida Agricultural College on the State Fairgrounds in Jacksonville in what has been called Florida’s first bowl game. Stetson won the game 6-0. It is said that Stetson would have scored another touchdown except that a policeman on a horse got in the way. It is also said that Florida Agricultural College would have scored a touchdown had it not been for a tree stump at the edge of the playing field. In the early days, football aroused more interest than any other sport at Stetson, as it did at most universities. In 1903, although Stetson played just two games with a tie and a win, it was considered the state champions. Since the final game of the season was not played, George Wilson of the Florida Times-Union said that Stetson had not formally won the championship. Stetson claimed the state title in 1901, 1903, 1905, 1906, 1907, and 1909. In the spring of 1934 an effort was made to build a $40,000 football stadium on campus. The Civil Works Administra-

tion (CWA) offered to put up $30,000 of the needed funds. It was assumed that $10,000 of the amount would be needed for materials and all the federal money for that purposed had already been apportioned to other projects on campus. Coach Herb McQuillan and John Stetson, Jr., worked diligently to get the stadium built. They made drawings that turned into blueprints yet it was not enough. It was hoped that the City of DeLand would eventually lease the stadium and help find a way to cover the $10,000, but money was hard to come by at that time and the project never came to fruition. Following the 1934 season, and after the failed attempt to get a football stadium built, long time head coach Herb McQuillan announced that he was leaving Stetson to accept a position at Texas A&M. What followed was the biggest coaching controversy in Stetson athletics history. Initially there were 49 applicants for the coaching vacancy. When it was made public that one of the applicants was football star Red Grange, the best known name in the sport at the time, the other 48 hopefuls faded away. At first it seemed that President Allen wanted Grange, yet when it became clear Grange would accept the position, Allen decided that his hiring would put too much stress on athletics, commercialize the University, and draw the school away from its intended purpose and mission. He feared it would impair the relationship between Stetson and the Baptist constituency. The uproar that followed included an unofficial poll by students who voted 100-1 in favor of hiring Grange. cals and alumni vigorously supported the students’ effort, yet President Allen stood firm and Red Grange never came to DeLand. The bad news was that Grange did not become Stetson’s next head coach. The good news was that Brady Cowell filled the opening. Cowell was one of the most beloved coaches ever to work at Stetson. He headed up the football program for nine seasons between 1935 and 1948. One of the biggest victories in program history came on Cowell’s watch in 1938. Stetson had played the University of Florida just eight times since 1912 and had fallen behind in enrollment, as well as in football. Stetson traveled to Gainesville, outplayed the Gators and brought home a 16-14 win.

When Stetson’s excited supporters returned to DeLand they went straight to President Allen’s home and awoke him so he could join in the celebration which he did going as far as lighting the celebratory bonfire. Following the Florida victory another movement started to build a football stadium in DeLand. This time the project was estimated at approximately $100,000. The City of DeLand was to contribute $26,000 and the 6,000 seat venue was to be completed in 1941. Late in the process however, President Allen announced that Stetson, for financial reasons, would cease to participate in intercollegiate sports. Due to finances, as well as World War II the football program was in hiatus from 1941 through 1945. After the war President Allen had football resumed at Stetson. The last notably successful season for the Stetson football team came in 1951. Head Coach Joe McMullen led the Hatters to an 8-1-2 overall record and a 35-20 victory over Arkansas State in the season-ending Tangerine Bowl. The only blemish on the record that season came at the hands of the Florida State Seminoles by a score of 13-10. The end of football at Stetson came to pass following the 1956 season. The times, as well as students at Stetson had changed. They were still interested in athletics, but not nearly as much as in years past. It was felt that football had to be given up. Most of the schools Stetson had played in the past had abandoned their football programs and the larger schools,
like Florida, had grown large and were too strong to compete against. In Stetson’s final season of 1956, other than homecoming, no more than 60 reserved seats were sold to the general public. In a January 22, 1957, meeting of trustees, the football program was terminated at Stetson. While Stetson did not play a football game after 1957, the talk of bringing football back to campus continued, virtually unabated over the years. The movement to bring football back to Stetson started almost before the decision to end the program was made. In August of 1957, Edward C. Furlong, who was chairman of the University athletic committee, came out in support of the return of football, perhaps as early as 1960. The thought was for Stetson to join with other like-minded institutions in the southeast to form a league based on the Ivy League, in which no players would receive athletic aid or scholarships. Then Stetson Director of Athletics, Dr. J. Ollie Edmunds, supported a planned Ivy League that he hoped would include Rollins, Jacksonville and a new University that was being built in Tampa (USF). The Stetson faculty was behind the effort to bring football back, but only if there were other “like-minded” schools in the state who shared that interest. The effort to bring football back continued in 1961 when the University faculty drafted letters to President John F. Kennedy, Oklahoma football coach Bud Wilkinson and A.L. Duer, who was Executive Secretary and Treasurer of the NAIA to enlist their support in bring football back to Stetson. The talk of returning to the football field continued at Stetson through the

years, but it took more than half a century to bring the sport back. In the spring of 2011, 55 years after the Stetson Board of Trustees ended football, that same board voted to reinstate the sport as a member of the Pioneer Football League, restoring the once proud tradition that is Stetson Football. The University partnered with the City of DeLand to make improvements to Spec Martin Memorial Stadium so that it will serve as the home of Stetson Football. The University also invested more than $6 million to build a new Athletics Training Center on campus, which opened in August of 2012. The facility houses coaches offices, meeting space, locker rooms, an equipment room, a training room and a strength training facility. In addition to two football practice fields, the facility is the home base of operation for both the men’s and women’s soccer programs as well as the women’s lacrosse program, with a game field, and a practice field in addition to all of the other amenities.
