TAKE THE

POLL

In its short history, OMG Magazine has had regular columns that deal with relationships and relationship issues. However, last week US President Obama basically risked his job and issued an outright, outspoken endorsement of the rights of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Trans-gender) people, particularly their right to get married – to be equal in every sense under the law. Rights aren’t equal unless they are shared by everyone and reflected in our laws. No other US president has ever made such a statement publicly. Mr Obama made it clear that these were his personal beliefs and feelings. So it may still be some time before US lawmakers make the shift. It may take far longer for our leaders in Trinidad and Tobago to come around to doing anything like this. Remaking the world always begins with people exchanging ideas. Recent polls done by USA Today and Gallup Polls revealed that 50 per

How to avoid first date blunders

Step 1

Be yourself. Don’t try to be someone you think your date will like.

Step 2

Make a good first impression. This includes cleanliness, confidence, and consideration. And be on time!

Tip - Go out for coffee or a drink instead of dinner. It’s less formal and less stressful

Step 3

Respect your date. Listen and be courteous. Your conversation shouldn’t be a monologue or an interview.

Step 4

Keep the mood light and fun. On a first date, no one wants to hear about past relationships and problems.

Tip - Turn off your cellphone. Give your date all of your attention. Step 5

Enjoy the moment. Appreciate the person you’re with, share some laughter – and breathe!

How to ask crucial relationship questions Step 1

Consider the outcome. Ask your partner how they envision the relationship. Does it have long-term potential or is it just for fun? If one sees marriage while the other is thinking holiday fling, someone’s going to get hurt.

Tip - Give honest answers. There’s no point in lying and telling your partner what you think they want to hear as it will only breed resentment and ultimately destroy the relationship.

Step 2

Ask your significant other if they can tolerate and accept your weaknesses and determine if you can tolerate theirs. Do you thrive on creative clutter while your significant other is a neat freak? Honestly examine which character flaws are deal-breakers and which can be accepted.

Tip - Do you want children? It may seem silly to break off a relationship in its early stages over potential children, but if you deeply desire children and your significant other is adamantly against having a family, it’s a deal-breaker.

Step 3

Examine your financial attitudes. Does your partner have a savings account or do they spend like there’s no tomorrow? Finances are a major contributing factor in the demise of relationships, so make sure that the two of you are well-matched financially.

Step 4

Align your ambitions. Where does your partner see themselves in 5 or 10 years? If you want to teach orphans in China and your significant other hopes to take the corporate world by storm, your dreams and aspirations won’t mesh, and your relationship will erode.

Step 5

Express your love in a fashion that suits both of you. Are you an affectionate person while your partner despises PDA? Make sure you’re compatible in your need for physical intimacy, not only in the frequency of your lovemaking but also with simple acts like hugging and holding hands. Ask your significant other how much affection is important to them.

Border line We speak on the phone almost every night, She likes me, I like her but I don’t want to be in a relationship with her. Mainly because she comes on a bit too strong at times... It’s a complete turn-off.

Why don’t they want me? I’m 18 years old and I’m known as the funny girl. Guys don’t take me seriously or even like me in that way. I’m the “best friend” girl. It’s not that I’m ugly, I was considered for modelling when I was younger. I am only 5’ 1” and kinda chubby, but I’m not ugly. People say I look like Denise Richards, Brooke Shields and Grace Kelly, yet guys don’t even consider me. I don’t understand. I am a super confident and strong woman, with a great personality. I always fall for men I can’t have. I am in many ways innocent, but I’m not delusional. I get along really well with my young male teacher and I know that if he wasn’t already married, and wasn’t my teacher, we would be together by now. But the stars are not aligned in our path. My big question is: Why don’t men take an interest in me?

Pierced I’ve got 11 piercings on my ears, six on one side and five on the other. My lip and belly button are pierced. I had my belly button done twice and have two scars to show where it ripped. I just recently removed my nipple rings but plan to redo them next year, hopefully. I’m a huge fan of all things pierced and I am not sure what will come next.

Sweet pay-off I’ve been going to the gym for a few years now and have been on the slow progress meter. Last year I got a little more serious about my programme but, as usual, the workouts lost intensity after a while. For the past month I’ve been focused, not only working with heavier weights/lower reps, but also modifying what I eat. I cut out as much sugar as I could – ice-cream, no dessert, no fruit yogurts, no soda and I lowered my daily saturated fat intake to around 10 grams on average. Monday is the day I weigh in and check my body fat. Today, at 6’ 2”, I weigh 181 pounds and have 7.1 per cent body fat. I’m pretty excited! It has not been easy to get my body fat under 10 per cent. My goal is to keep the body fat below 10 per cent and continue to build up the resistance during weight training and cardio sessions. I get very excited about my results but I can’t share them at the office because the majority of my co-workers are overweight and my family just doesn’t get it.

What now? My boyfriend left me suddenly and also so has the man I was cheating on him with. I so thought I had a back-up. Guess that’s what I get when I try to play two games of cards at the same time. Sigh. What now?

Thought I would be happy All I want is to be happy and I can’t reach that goal. I keep thinking to myself that “once I accomplish this” or “when that is over” or “when I reach this point in my life” I’ll be happy then but the days come and go and I’m still not happy. I thought I’d be better by now.

Virgin secret I'm not a virgin. I've been lying to my boyfriend for two years now. My previous boyfriend took my virginity and we broke up a few weeks after. I'm ashamed to tell him because he warned me about my ex and now I'm afraid he'll be upset with me for withholding a secret like this from him for so long. I do love him but this secret will go to my grave with me.

chef Wilmer Mago

Bella Italia Restaurant - TRINCITY MALL

Bella Italia Restaurant is located on the ground level of Trincity Mall, just at the eastern entrance of the new food court. The OMG team was totally impressed with chef Wilmer Mago’s sumptuous presentations. They not only looked great but tasted fantastic. We were very surprised to discover a great tasting meal at a mall restaurant. The meals are prepared fresh by the very experienced Chef Mago who describes his offerings as Italian fine dining with an international twist. Bella Italia recently started a pasta station where customers can come in and have their selections

prepared in front of them – fresh and to their taste. Bella Italia is a great place to have a business meeting in the east. Impress your guests. It’s perfect for birthdays, special dates and anniversaries. You can even have a small wedding at the location and they also cater for various events. Of course we would not enjoy a meal and not invite our OMG readers to experience it also. So if you would like a dinner for two at Bella Italia Restaurant, Trincity Mall, all you need to do is go to Facebook, like OMG Magazine and post on our wall “I want Bella Italia”.

When Designers United Stores (DUS) coined the term “a place where renewable energy is celebrated” as the tag line for Tobago Fashion Weekend 2012 (TFW 2012), they never in their wildest dreams anticipated a runway presentation featuring bones. Yes, I said bones! That collagen-rich organic matrix constituting the skeleton of vertebrates. Well, in walks an unpretentious teacher whose passion for the environment and things organic and indigenous speaks volumes about her commitment to her off-the-cuff craft. Down-to-earth and driven, this Tobagonian pioneer speaks quite candidly and unreservedly about her cattle bone jewellery, almost as if we were all still primal people whose vocation it is to hunt and gather. I was captivated and so here I am, proclaiming the work of a true New World artisan, Dianne Thomas.

She brings something new to the metaphoric table of fashion-forward alternatives. “Where do you gather your bones? The abattoir!” I asked cynically. To which she responded unabashedly and emphatically, “Indeed! And I get some from the remains of the day at select restaurants”. Wow! Here is this simulated ivory craft item that is cruelty-free and edgy, with a recyclable angle to it. How cool is that! The wearer assumes a Viking conqueror’s allure, tinged with a gender-free sense of the elemental and the tribal. Dianne also experiments with chunks of wood and compressed sawdust to fill up the centre of the vertebra and dabbles with blends of crochet and copper to render modern appeal to her creations. She is a recycle artist who celebrates her style by practising and engaging the concept of renewable energy, certainly giving credence to the adage “If necessity is the mother of invention then resourcefulness is the father!” “It’s cow bone!” she hastens to reveal, with that ever-so-poignant secret-to-tell expression on her face.

This weekend’s Dan Dan Fiesta (TFW 2012) promises to be a veritable blend of media in an extraordinary defile de mode. From cow bones to copper, the gamut of accessories bespeaks the island-style diversity of the Caribbean. Visual Arts teacher-cum-accessory stylist Anthony Lera is beside himself, excited about showing a wide range of his mainstay copper work, boasting of his repousee and embossed techniques.

style

Lera has even ventured into brass work, giving a timeless and antique character to his pieces. This third generation copper artisan now alternates between copper and brass while sampling other textures to produce inimitable Trinbagonian art that’s very wearable. This pushing-theenvelope approach is what defines our Caribbean style and renders our aesthetic fascinating to the world. Shot on location at

Inspirational and gospel artiste Rizon is preparing for the launch of his latest CD featuring 12 new tracks, from which he recently released the song “No Entry” and a music video directed by Sancho Francisco. Rizon is best known for his song “Reach”, a powerful motivational composition released in 2008. He explains that reaching out is the sole aim of his music – to reach people with a message that will empower and enlighten them. He wants his music to encourage change in people, in the community, country and ultimately the world. He explains, “I don’t want to just make music. My music must create a tangible impact”. This gospel artiste is the campus ministry leader for the Port of Spain Church of Christ and his focus is the youth. We asked him to tell us more about “No Entry”. He said, “The song was written to empower young people, men and women. While it touches on the issue of child abuse it is meant to deal with anything that can contaminate your life, so it is really ‘No Entry’ to all forms of negativity in your life. This song is for the young people who don’t know that they can speak out, they can shout and scream and have a say. I wanted to create a song that will give them a voice, so I made it easy for them to sing “No Entry”.

OMG noticed just about the time the song was released there were two heinous crimes against children, so we were curious as to whether there was any connection with those little ones whose lives were snatched away. He said “No Entry” was written long before and that those crimes took place two weeks after the video was released. He said it was not meant to highlight any particular case but to empower people and encourage them to take a stand for themselves anytime they feel they are being oppressed in any way. “My aim is to have the entire nation singing “No entry”. Rizon believes as an artiste he has an obligation to uplift and enlighten. He explained that while an artiste’s goal is to have his song bubbling on the radio, “my real objective is that the music that I create must have impact on the listener’s life”. Rizon grew up in a rough part of Belmont where he was surrounded by violence and crime. He recalled, “you had to be tough to even walk in the streets, or you would be picked on and provoked. So as a young man I was very aggressive and very angry. People who knew me then and see me now can’t believe it and people who know me now and hear about my past can’t believe it either, but it was a radical transformation, by the grace of God”. When asked how the church was able to move him from being that aggressive young man to who he is today, Rizon said at his church there is a strong system of mentorship. He always had one person in his life who he could talk to, someone he could share his struggles with and get advice from. He says that has been a critical part of his life. It has kept him grounded and focused even up to today. Can he share everything with his mentors? “I can go into details. There is a huge element

WEEKLY ENTERTAINMENT MAGAZINE | Saturday May 19, 2012 Page 13

ighten... all of trust. For all my years with the church I have never had that trust shattered. I have friends in my life who are walking the same path that I am walking, who know the details of my life, the ugliest parts, but they keep me in mind, they keep me in prayer and I’ve never felt betrayed. These things help – one, to be able to talk about it and two, to have people who will check up on you to make sure everything is alright.” Rizon attended Rosary Boys Primary School and passed his Common Entrance for St Anthony’s College. He did one year there and then transferred to Queen’s Royal College where he stayed from forms two to five. He said while QRC was a great experience he was a very aggressive individual there; he was an angry young man. This led to a lot of trouble at school and he was not allowed to do A’Levels there. He entered sixth form at South East Port of Spain Secondary School and it was there that his life was transformed. He met someone who encouraged him to study the Bible. He became a Christian. He was reborn and started to set goals for himself. He boasts of still having the original list of goals he set and he has been able, year after year, to tick off the listed objectives, one after the other. Nevertheless his overriding aim is always to use his gifts to bring glory to God. While at school he did not know how it was going to happen because he was into graphic arts and not singing. However, because of the many events he took part in at church he was able to develop his confidence, to be able to speak in front of a crowd and eventually started singing. People were impressed. They loved his voice and he was encouraged to do more, so he began developing his writing skills, dreaming that someday someone would sing his songs on the radio.

He never thought it would be him, because at that stage fear was a big factor – fear of big crowds, fear of being on stage. But eventually he did hit the stage and the rest is still unfolding. The future for Rizon is basically to get the message out. His goal is to make music that has wide appeal and whether it is on a small stage or before large audiences the focus is the same – make a big impact with the words. We asked Rizon where his name came from. It is a play on two words, “Horizon” – where the heavens touch the earth – and “Risen” as in the risen Christ, so his music has to be uplifting. He came up with the name to constantly remind himself of what he is about. He added, “As long as I live, this is what I’ll be about”. Rizon’s feels his big OMG moment is about to happen. He says many things are lining up for something big to happen. He can just feel it.

HOW

TO’S

Give up soft drink Step 1

Don’t try to give up soda (also called, soft or sweet drinks) cold turkey. Instead, cut back a little bit every day until you’re down to almost no soda. If calories are your main concern, try switching to diet sodas.

Step 2

Spruce up plain water with citrus slices or fresh mint. Be creative and try adding different things to your water until you find something you can drink all the time.

Step 3

Step 5

Drink 100 per cent fruit juice. While fruit juices tend to contain a lot of sugar, they also contain nutrients that are good for you, unlike the empty calories of soda.

Make your own lemonade with fresh lemons, water and a small amount of sugar or artificial sweetener.

TIP – Add club soda to fruit juice to replace the carbonation you’re missing.

Get into the habit of drinking nonfat milk instead of soda. Milk contains calcium, potassium, vitamin D, and protein, all of which are essential for the health and maintenance of your body. When you find a replacement for soda, you won’t remember why you ever drank it in the first place.

Step 4

Drink unsweetened tea. Try herbal or green teas, or drink tea with milk or lemon and sweeten it with honey or artificial sweetener.

Step 6

Use mouthwash for more than bad breath Step 1 Clean cuts and burns Use mouthwash as an antiseptic: Pour it on minor cuts, scrapes, and burns to prevent infections.

Step 2

Tone your face After washing your face with your regular cleanser, wipe it with a mouthwash-dampened cotton ball. It will work like an astringent to tighten pores.

Tip – Follow up with a dab of moisturiser – mouthwash can over-dry your face.

Step 3

Make your own hand sanitiser The next time your pricey little

bottle of hand sanitiser runs out, refill it with mouthwash. It will do the trick just as well.

Step 4

Banish dandruff Nix dandruff with a simple mix of one part witch hazel and one part mouthwash with eight parts water. Put it in a spray bottle and spritz at your roots – on your scalp – after shampooing and conditioning, while your hair is still damp. Leave in, and style with your usual products.

Step 5

Extend flower life Make cut flowers last longer by adding two tablespoons per gallon of water. The mouthwash will inhibit bacterial growth.

Step 6

Sanitise your toilet Sanitise your toilet by pouring two ounces into the bowl, letting it sit for 30 minutes, then swishing and flushing.

Step 7

Neutralise smelly hands After handling a smelly food like garlic, wash your hands, rub them with a cotton ball soaked in mouthwash, and rinse them.

Tip – For best results, let your hands air-dry before rinsing. Step 8

Prevent underarm odour Out of deodorant? Slap some mouthwash under each arm and you’re good to go.

Mikhail Gibbings

The Innovation Prize winner of the Youth-IN VideoMix Competition

artistof the week This fun-loving, charismatic 16 year is a lower 6th form student at Trinity College East in Trinidad. He also plays music, mainly jazz and blues, primarily as a guitarist. Here is his own description of the process of developing the winning video entitled “Finding Love”:

Scan QR Code to see Mikhail’s winning movie

“Before hearing about this competition I had never thought about, much less tried to make any type of film. After coming up with a few ideas, I talked to my good friend Sy-Han Wu who is a brilliant visual artist who is featured throughout the video drawing various things including the chalk butterfly and rose as well as the writing in the first scene with the hands. The hands were those of another of my good friends, Kristian Ali, who also helped me and Sy-Han in a scene that involved drawing, over 100 times, an incredibly detailed crying eye which was eventually cut from the final video. Both of these friends helped make this video possible under some hard conditions. In addition to keeping everything from being a job during the process, given the stressful nature of the time lapse/ stop-motion mediums which I used, they helped me with everything from start to finish. I could not have done this without them. The music was one of my favorite parts of this project to make since my passion is music. It is 99% improvised so it took exactly the amount of time to write as it took to record which saved a considerable amount of time and was very fun to do. Our equipment was incredibly improvised

also. Especially since we had a budget only large enough to purchase a roll of electric tape and a bottle of hand sanitizer. Our tripod was broken so the camera had to be taped to it. Lighting when it got darker during the first scene was achieved using a cell phone. The last scene was shot on an IPod which was duct taped to a tripod and the images on the ground were drawn with old chalk from everyone’s houses. The scene which was shot on my front door using an image I alone made in my living room using half a roll of electric tape and a lamp. And the audio recorded in my room by twisting a microphone around the same tripod and almost pressing it to the guitar. This was a very interesting competition especially since it addressed an issue which is plaguing our society and has been since the beginning of our existence. Maybe we can make a small dent with spreading awareness of the issue even if we can do nothing to stop violence against women entirely. What we can do is not do it ourselves and possibly we can encourage others we know to discontinue this abuse. We cannot make an impact alone. I wish we could do more, but they can, the abusers themselves need to stop, the ball is in their court. It always has been. Stop the abuse. Please.”

Carissa Rudolfo 14 years old TENNIS PLAYER

This is Carissa’s third year of playing tennis. When she was 13 she went to Suriname to take part in an International Tennis Federation (ITF) development tournament. She credits that experience with developing her tennis tremendously. “I’ve been going to several tournaments since, including playing in Barbados, where I got to the doubles semi-finals.” She says she trains about 12 hours per week. “You have to get your mind and body ready and if you are not serious about it you will never reach anywhere in tennis.” We spoke to Dave Patrick, her coach, who is very excited with the new crop of young athletes and the dedication, capacity for hard work and natural talent many of them possess. Carissa is very competitive and wants to be the best in tennis. She wants to be better than everybody else and vows to make it happen. “My aim is to win and when I don’t, I go and analyse where I went wrong and work out what I need to do to get better.” She went to St Joseph Girls’ RC School in St Joseph and proceeded to St Joseph Convent which is literally next door. This next door business she laments because she has seen the same faces and the same place for the past nine years. At school she says she is the quiet girl, believe it or not, with lots of friends but most of the time she tries to stay out of trouble. She has an older brother who is 17. She says, “I love him, but let’s just say he is not as motivated as I am to go out and do things.” Carissa dislikes pretentious people, liars and people who are not serious. She feels we should all buckle down and do the work to move ahead. Besides tennis, she loves music. Writing is another passion of hers. Ask her to write about a rock, she says, and she will turn it into a unicorn. She is interested in the sciences but wants to be a poet and writer but guess what? She feels she will end up becoming a dentist. She makes it clear, though, that she loves tennis most of all. “I cannot imagine my life without tennis. All these people have changed me so much. All the people I train with have become like my family to me. It is just beautiful, honestly.” Her biggest OMG moment she can tell us about was finding out she was going to play at another ITF tournament later this year.

“New reggae single out of Tobago, set to be

A Massive Hit”

Tobago’s K.Kay isn’t about to stop especially since he’s convinced that his music is infectious enough to please crowds across the board, from uptown to downtown and everywhere in between reports tropicalfete.com. His most recent release “Thinking about you” is a collaborative one with a young songstress who is bent on showing the world just what she’s got, and she’s certainly got a lot to offer. Meet 23-year-old Crystal “Sparkles” Nixon. She’s the female voice on the hot, new reggae single that many agree, will make waves across the Caribbean and overseas if given the chance. Sparkles and K.Kay have known each other for many years and their musical chemistry has proven strong on previous occasions. However this time around Sparkles truly shines and with an effervescent vibe plus her vocal perfection, she’s putting everything she’s got into making this single a success. “I’ve been singing since the age of 12 and I penned my first song when I was 14 years old,” she declared, explaining that her compositions have won her numerous titles in various competitions in Tobago. Now, stepping out of the familiar and into the realm of vast possibility, the young singer who is quite intrigued by all aspects of music creation, is excited for the world to hear “Thinking About You”.

“This single was produced by Millbeatz Entertainment,” explained K.Kay, clarifying that the track was mastered by the highly reputable, Precision Productions. He said “Thinking About You” is reminiscent of the days when reggae music could reach out and touch the soul of any listener. Its message is also quite distinct and with strong production and expert musical mastering, there’s no doubt that this track will offer the breakthrough both K.Kay and his vocal partner, Sparkles, have each been seeking. “This song is about love. It’s a feeling we all experience at some time or another. We live in a world plagued by negative happenings but there’s one positive word and feeling that could change all of that – and that word is love,” said K.Kay, explaining that the track’s lyrics will seek to promote more love and its melody will create that sweet vibe capable of stirring up emotional feelings in the heart of any listener. No matter the outcome this time around, the Tobago songbirds are adamant that they will keep knocking on the doors at radio stations. They will work hard at promoting their music in every way possible and this is something that young Sparkles’ determined spirit will see her through. K. Kay has always loved music and this latest contribution is proof of that. The track’s smoothness is unlike anything heard in recent years and according to both vocalists, “Thinking About You” is just the reggae track to infect anyone’s life with the right energy that’s needed in an often chaotic world..

Ravi B & Isasha release new love song The worlds of chutney-soca and reggae have come together for what is being described as a major mid-year groovy ballad. Karma’s Ravi B and T&T reggae crooner Isasha have combined musical styles for the new track entitled “Jab Jab Bahar Aaye”.

Beenie Man and Busy Signal creating the dancehallchutney sub-genre.

This latest Caribbean collaboration is produced by top Trinidadian producer Big Rich of the The Punkalunks Factory who in recent years has been responsible for some of the biggest hits in the chutney and soca genres. The song unites Ravi B’s sweet, sensual Hindi lyrics with Isasha’s raw, unmistakable vocals, set to the tempo of a groovy chutney-soca riddim for a truly melodious and danceable number.

Since T&T’s 2012 Carnival Ravi and Karma have been touring almost every weekend in the US, Canada and Guyana. He noted that the band’s next scheduled performance in Trinidad will be on May 29 for the Indian Arrival Day celebrations after it returns from overseas appearances at events such as the Gemini Production’s Annual Mother’s Day Concert in Miami, the 10/10 cricket finals in Guyana and Orlando’s Carnival.

Although it has only been recently released, music fans and industry insiders have been giving the new tune positive reviews and have already branded it a modern day wedding anthem. Upon listening to the single, a well known entertainment blogger defined “Jab Jab Bahar Aaye” as “a festive Caribbean party atmosphere meeting a passionate wedding setting” due to its romantic overtones matched by its infectious percussive beats.

Ravi B

Isasha, whose real name is Brendon Young, is recognised as one of T&T’s premier reggae balladeers and he proved his ability on the soca stage with his Carnival 2012 track “Wining Symptoms”. On “Jab Jab Bahar Aaye” he impressively complements Ravi’s smooth Hindi vocals with his rootsy ragga technique. This new musical offering, however, does not mark the first occasion that the chutney and reggae worlds have combined as Ravi B’s sister and Karma band mate Nisha B previously teamed up with Jamaican superstars

Ravi shared that not only does this collaboration between himself and Isasha represent unity and creative cooperation amongst Caribbean artistes but it also showcases the limitless possibilities for the chutney-soca art form as it gains momentum en route to achieving further global appeal.

Most notably, Ravi B will also open for Bollywood superstar Sonu Nigam at the Jean Pierre Complex in Port of Spain on June 2 and he will host the Annual Father’s Day Spectacular on June 16 alongside Karma at the Centre of Excellence.

Tifa: Beware scammers pretending to be booking agents

SIZZLA’S ROMANTIC BALLAD

‘LOVE CONNECTION’

High-riding dancehall female artiste Tifa is the latest entertainer to have fallen victim to scammers. Individuals have been posing as booking agents and have been booking shows on her behalf. In a release to the media, Tifa advised that anyone who wishes to book her for performances should contact her authorised agents. “I felt it was necessary to make the public aware of my booking situation because unscrupulous persons have been telling people that they are booking for me, when they were not, neither have they been passing information on to me about these bookings. So I just want the public to know that Headline Entertainment is my exclusive booking agent,” Tifa explained. Persons are being urged not to give monies to these unauthorised persons.

The artiste, who has been riding the charts in Africa with three singles inside that country’s dancehall top ten, has released a bunch of new songs. They include “Love Me 2” featuring Laza Morgan, “Destiny” featuring Konshens on the Wet Up rhythm; “Niceness” on the TNS rhythm from CR203 Productions; “Wife Me Up” for 12 to 12 Productions’ Hot Chocolate rhythm; and “Ex Man” for Washroom Entertainment. Fans can also look out for new recordings on projects from Ward 21, ZJ Chrome, Chimney Records and UIM among others. Tifa’s debut album has been completed and the finishing touches are being administered for its release. She is set to perform at the BME’s later this month in Boston; and she has a tour of Japan coming up for the summer. Her recent accolades include five nominations in the MIA Awards and three nods in the SOFLO Awards.

PERMEATES THE AIRWAVES Reggae artiste Sizzla is known for his message-laced conscious offerings. His latest single, “Love Connection”, raises the musical bar with its lyrical content and top notch production. “Love Connection” is produced by Adrian “Donsome” Hanson and released on the Donsome Records label. The romantic ballad has been blowing up FM radio since its release to radio. In the song,

Sizzla pleads for the affection of his woman. He longs for the comfort of her arms where he can find solace in her passion. “Love Connection” showcases Sizzla’s musical artistry and his knack for creating deliciously appetising brews when it comes to matters of the heart. This is another tasty treat from the producer who is best known for the Crime Stop rhythm project. Crime Stop featured “Mama Bawl” by Gyptian, “Lost Our Way” by I Octane and “Famine and Drought” by I Wayne.

Dancehall star Flippa Mafia has returned with a bang His latest single, “Real to the People”, which is featured on the Dutty Cartoon riddim from Board House Records, has been blowing up all over FM radio. In a release to the media, Flippa explained the story behind the song. “Every song I do has meaning behind it based on the things I am talking about. A me say star a star. Me a di real flossing King,” Flippa explained. This isn’t the first time Flippa has worked with the Board House Records team. He describes the synergy with the budding dancehall label as a successful one. “It has been very successful working with Board House Records. We have a good chemistry and this is evident in the songs that we put out,” said Flippa.

The dancehall artiste has recorded quite a few songs for the label including his breakthrough number one hit “Dem Ya, Say Dem a Lippa” and “Bout Dem a Floss” and “Ova Mi Money”. Flippa has been quite busy recording on some of the hottest dancehall projects currently on the scene. He is featured on ZJ Wah Wa’s newest project with the track “Can’t Help Myself”. Additionally he recorded on new projects for TJ Records and producer Rambo. The artiste says he is bringing a different flavour to the dancehall game. “Right now me a bring a different flavour to the game. We a try to uplift the youths so they can enjoy themselves. We’re trying to bring a jovial thing to the music,” he explained. The artiste has also progressed into music production with the creation of his Flip Money Squad and label Flip Money Records. Flip Money Records debuted a while

The label’s upcoming project features a riddim created by Big Ship’s Stephen McGregor. The project is aimed at tapping into the hip-hop market and according to Flippa, he already has two well known American rappers lined up to record songs on the riddim. Flip Money Squad is comprised of up-andcoming dancehall acts including Skilly Banks, Kanambo and Placka Moggela. Flippa Mafia is set to perform at the So Flo Awards event in Florida later this month. Kesia Estwick

MODELS STAND FOR JUDGING DURING COMPETITION

Bajan designer Kesia Estwick wins Mission Catwalk challenge with ‘cutting-edge’ design Barbados gets the top score on episode seven of Caribbean fashion reality series Mission Catwalk where Kesia Estwick designed the winning outfit inspired by the sleek and stylish Nokia N9. The designers were divided into two groups of five. Group A comprised Keshon Hawthorne, Janel Jolly and Crystal Powell of Jamaica; Kerin Scott of Barbados and Belize’s Rebecca Stirm. Group B included Kesia Estwick of Barbados, Ryan Chan of Trinidad and Tobago, Janelle Forde who represents both Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana’s Ryan Berkeley and Gregory Williams of Jamaica. The designers were given pre-selected fabric from Pablo’s that represented the vibrant colours of the stylish new mobile phone. The task at hand was a tall order as the designers would be taking on the role of guest judge Dexter “3D” Pottinger who has created fashionable and innovative outfits for Digicel and its associated mobile brands over the years. The words “fashion-forward”, “cutting-edge”

and “daring” come to mind when considering his work as a stylist, designer, make-up artist and video director. He was duly impressed, however, with Kesia’s “perfectly executed” interpretation: a pleated, tunic-inspired minidress made of blue ottoman satin with green jersey viscose print at the back. The waistline was accentuated with a green spandex band which was overlayed with a pink satin ribbon that tied in a bow at the back for that playful touch. “This piece represents very well with clean cuts, nice finish, elegant spunk, and youthful appeal. I could not have done it better myself,” says Pottinger. Also on hand to judge the pieces was Bryan Wint, Territory Manager for Nokia, who loved the dress and said it was exactly what Nokia would look for. As for the 21-year-old St Phillips native, her excitement is compounded by the fact that she is the first Barbadian to win a Mission Catwalk challenge. Following Kesia was Williams, who has also won one challenge. Scott, who after her elimination returned to the show in a dramatic twist last week, had the third best design. For the first time since the show’s start three-time challenge

winner Stirm has failed to show in the top contenders. In the bottom three slots were Hawthorne, Forde and Chan. This is Chan’s second time in the bottom two after having strong showings in episodes 2 , 3 and 4. The judges, host and executive producer Keneea Linton George, Jamaica Observer lifestyle editor Novia McDonald-Whyte and international menswear designer Carlton Brown still want to see what this Trinidadian has to offer, so look out for more from Ryan on next week’s episode. Unfortunately both Janelle Forde and Keshon Hawthorne failed to impress and were eliminated. Mission Catwalk is now shown in six countries around the region. Jamaicans can watch Tuesday nights at 8:30 pm on Television Jamaica. In Belize the show airs at 7:30 pm on Channel 5. Trinidad and Tobago viewers can catch a new episode each week on TV6 Tuesdays at 9:30 pm. CBC Barbados airs the series on Monday nights at 9 pm. The show also airs on GTV 28 in Guyana and GBN in Grenada. Mission Catwalk is presented by NCB, Supreme Ventures and Digicel, and can be viewed online each Tuesday at 8:30 pm and Thursdays at 5:30 pm (Kingston time at www.televisionjamaica.com/livetv.aspx)

Riddick, the long-awaited sequel to Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, has released a new image online, showing Vin Diesel’s titular anti-hero clutching some kind of tribal staff.

that alerts a group of ruthless mercenaries to his whereabouts. If the aliens don’t get him first, this lot surely will!

The new film finds Riddick abandoned and left for dead on a barren, sun-scorched planet, where he appears to be the only living creature. Unhappily for him, however, that assessment soon turns out to be incorrect.

Riddick has yet to receive an official release date, although Diesel recently revealed that the earliest possible opening could be January 2013. He also mentioned that the studio is pleased with what they’ve seen, and further sequels have been discussed. Looks like Riddick is here to stay.

Pursued by a race of lethal alien predators, Riddick is left with no other option but to set off an emergency beacon… a beacon

The new image shows Riddick carrying what looks like a staff made of bones. Could that be the skull of one of the aliens he’s slain? Could it even be the skull of the space jockey? Sorry, we’ve got that guy on the brain…

We LOVE that Time cover, except... The three-year-old kid suckling on his mother’s breast on the cover of Time magazine is NOT too old to breastfeed ... so says a powerful breastfeeding organisation – but they do have one gripe. TMZ spoke with Bettina Forbes -co-founder of Best for Babes -an advocacy group dedicated to educating moms about breastfeeding. Forbes says, “We understand that Americans are uncomfortable with [the Time cover], but in cultures where babies wean themselves normally, usually somewhere around age 3 or 4, it is perfectly

acceptable.” She adds, “Think of it this way -- some cultures have been drinking green tea for millennia, only recently has it become popular in the United States once the health benefits were understood and it was popularised by marketing ... breastfeeding is the same, it is accepted and valued in many cultures, but not yet fully in the U.S.” As for the gripe -- Forbes says her first choice would have been Jennifer Garner in the role of breastfeeder ... but “we’re happy with anything that is an appealing image, provokes conversation, and ultimately desensitizes people to breastfeeding.”

The Expendables 2 After taking a seemingly simple job for Mr Church (Bruce Willis), the Expendables find their plans going awry and one of their own is brutally murdered by rival mercenary Jean Vilain (Jean-Claude Van Damme). The Expendables set out into hostile territory with their new members Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth) and Maggie (Yu Nan) to put a stop to a deadly weapon and gain their revenge against the villain who killed their brother.

EK THA TIGER poster: Salman Khan is ruggedly hot!

The new poster of Salman Khan’s upcoming film has us drooling …OMG! Khan is amazing! The new poster of “Ek Tha Tiger” is beautifully composed and shows off the popular actor in the rugged avatar we just love!

It’s a wonderful departure from his goofy Dabangg and Bodyguard posters. After a long time, we are getting to see the intense side of Salman. The poster radiates a sense of urgency – you see helicopters pursuing our hero even as he pursues someone else, armed with just a gun.

feel of earthiness, as if we’ll finally see the man getting down and dirty in his fights instead of sending villains flying with just a semi-hilarious punch. Salman’s expression is one of utter seriousness, highlighted by the glow of the sun. Oh yes, we just love the poster! Do you?

to play God of Death? We hear that the Ishaqzaade actor has been approached for it and is mulling it over. Arjun Kapoor‘s debut film, Ishaqzaade , is in theatres, but the debutant is not planning on taking any break. Instead, he is just going to continue to do what he has always been doing – acting. What’s so surprising, you ask? His next venture is not another big budget film. Instead, it is a street play! We hear that Arjun may have been born into the illustrious Kapoor family, but he honed his acting skills at the grassroots

level. Arjun has been a regular actor in street plays. Though it began as a hobby, he soon got totally involved in it. A source said that Arjun is not going to give up on this form of edutainment just because he has got his first film. In fact, he is looking at doing something totally different from the rural boy in Ishaqzaade. He is going to play Yamraj, the God of Death! “He is very enthusiastic about street plays and wants to continue with them. He is quite excited to play Yamraj in his next street play,” said the source. We are just glad Arjun has his feet set firmly on the ground. Way to go!
